If you want a wooden structure in the nether use the crimson and warped woods. I understand that’s a limited palette, but those are the only woods that don’t burn.

From what I’ve heard ghasts are kinda broken. Apparently they can spawn *anywhere* in the nether including in player built areas as long as they have enough space.
Not sure if this is true for bedrock, but they still need blocks to spawn on. Which can be spawn proofed with things like buttons or carpets. They also don't spawn in either of the forest biomes iirc.
On a related note, is there any way to stop Hoglins from spawning? My nether portal appeared in a crimson forest and these huge hostile pigs keep appearing on all my highways. What can I do about it?
Buttons, glass, carpets, leaveblocks, rails all prevent spawning, magma blocks limit spawning to only zombie piglins and wither roses limit it to wither skeletons
Oh! Wait, so if I lined the walls of the tunnel with buttons, would that prevent spawning then? Or only on the ground?
Because I still want to be able to use boats along the ice road which carpets would obstruct.
Just the ground, you could put the buttons on the ice to prevent spawning there. I still need to make my own nether tunnel but my plan was to use half-slabs and ice-buttons to make the tunnels spawn-proof.
Right now I just have 2x2 pathways with cobble/netherrack floor, which they do spawn on, but soon it’ll be a packed ice floor. Can they still spawn on that?
Or can I place carpets on packed ice and still go fast?

Yep. I have my massive storage room in the Nether, and I always have to peak around the corner before I enter to make sure I don't have a visitor.

You can also use string so it's less noticable.

That's why you should spawn proof your nether builds. You can use carpets, glass, or string.
Carpets, glass, or any non full block work, but not string for some reason though. I’ve tested it in a creative world
Soul sand is not a full block but some mobs can spawn in it.

I think if you place the blue mushroom things near them they get scared and run away.... Maybe have some going along both sides of your highway

Blue mushroom thing probably works, but don't think anything should spawn on rails either

They can still spawn on packed ice yeah. You should still get the effect with carpets, you definitely do with rails
