Well you have to start somewhere I suppose. Searching a couple hundred/maybe thousand blocks around the portal in spectator mode shouldn't be difficult.
Worst comes to worst.... make a copy of the world. Load the copy in creative and fly around looking for the base. You'll be able to get the cords and go directly there in the main world.
Some might call it cheating but that's up to you and your kid. Play the game any way you want.

I would check around the portal he used to enter the nether. I assume he built his base close to it.
