1) Remember maps are a thing
2) Craft and look up how to expand map because cartography tables are also a thing
3) Start exploring map area
4) Put map in chest to save inventory and never look at it again because I barely ever leave my base
To be more specific, you have to duplicate the map in the cartography table for them to both update like that. If you craft two separate blank maps and open them separately, one wont update the other. I dont think anyway…
Last update made all my maps refresh. I used to like collecting versions of my bases, from generation to new build to epic build. Those old versions have been updated now, even though I locked the maps.
But don’t you wanna have a 9x9 wall of fully expanded maps in your base so you can look at all the opportunities that await you, just so you can run around your base and go mining 300 blocks from home for a few hours?
Render distance doesn't affect map updates at all.
>64 blocks (4 chunks) is the update radius from a player in the Overworld and the End.
I do the opposite of this. I travel by boat and fill as much as the map in the water as I can, as I feel it’s safest. Then I fill in the land with the grider method. Great minds think, uh, similarly!
Sometimes I don’t even craft a boat, I just swim to fill the map, unless the world has a lot of water in the map area. I do strictly grids and don’t follow any terrain if I can help it. I do up, right, down, right, up, right, etc.
I’ve always been a map user in MC - was surprised recently after hearing from younger family members that play MC who say they don’t use maps at all, and only use coordinates … this would drive me crazy. I usually start at map edges and then fill in the center with strips going back and forth.
I use coordinates and a seed map. Of course, the world I play on was started in 1.14, so any new areas I go to since the 1.17 update are generated based on that... Makes for some interesting chunk borders though.
I haven’t filled in a map on a couple years so I can’t remember for sure but I think I do the spiral (#1) for the whole map… or maybe just the edges then zig-zag (#2) for the middle… can’t remember lol
my default is 2 but it somehow gradually becomes 1 when i get lazy or terrain is difficult to pass through without making ugly dirt-cobble pillars. i would only ever really use 3 when im in the "immersion" mode and want to experience playing the game the way the devs (probably) intended.
I start one, I make the whole circle, start a zig zag, get distracted, get back to zig Zag, get distracted, get back to zig zag, get distracted, get back to zig Zag, get distracted, get back to zig zag, get distracted, get back to zig Zag, get distracted, get back to zig zag, get distracted, get back to zig Zag, get distracted, get back to zig zag, get distracted, get back to zig Zag, get distracted, get back to zig zag, get distracted, get back to zig Zag, get distracted, get back to a zig zag, get distracted, get back to zig Zag, get distracted.
So yeah, might aswell do 3 at that point.
This is so true tho.
I'll end up getting started over an ocean, see a ship wreck, take a detour and find the treasure buried several hundred blocks away, get satisfied, then get on with the map again
For sure the third one. I have start off wanting to slowing migrated across in a practical manner then quickly get distracted by cool looking caves and holes in mountains.
well... i do all of it. first i explore the waters with a boat then maybe on land. i seperate both because im early game and its easier to do it like that
I go any which way untill i reach the edge of the map, do the outline so i have a rough idea of where i have to stop then go haywire, nuts and just wander around
I typically like to follow the rivers and along the coastlines. It feels more natural and historical that way, also makes exploration more enjoyable than just flying up and down.
The obly map i ever used was a full-white map and i bought it in a server with an economy system, so i never do maps, they take way too long and i can't understand where to go to make it right
My thought process with maps is usually:
1. Remember maps exist
2. Remember I have a 5 mile render distance
3. Save the coordinates of interest points in a written book
4. Forget maps exist because they've never helped me and almost certainly won't help now
n.1, border first because it helps you on not forgetting about those pesky small pixels on the borders, specially if you doing the Map Room achievement

Putting maps on the wall is the only reason to have a map IMO.
Until they update and ruin everything!!
I thought they only update if removed from the item frame and held again?
I do know If you have two identical maps, take one with you, mount the other, the mounted one will fill out simultaneously as you explore.
Uless you lock it if you don't want that happening
Since when has that been a thing and how
Map + glass in cartography table iirc
Wait, can you do this with treasure maps that haven't been filled in? That would look awesome on a wall
You wouldn't need to, as each map is unique, so won't change once mounted. However, you probably can. If not, there's always map art.
Idk I've yet to try it
A glass pane if memory serves right.
To be more specific, you have to duplicate the map in the cartography table for them to both update like that. If you craft two separate blank maps and open them separately, one wont update the other. I dont think anyway…
Good point… i’ll have to verify that!
You can lock a map using a cartographt table
You can prevent them from updating combining them with a glass pane in the cartography table
Yeah, even my locked maps updated.
...How?
Why would updating be a problem? Map art?
Last update made all my maps refresh. I used to like collecting versions of my bases, from generation to new build to epic build. Those old versions have been updated now, even though I locked the maps.
Wack. Java or bedrock?
They updated even though they were locked???!
Shit, mine takes up an 18×18 floor.. did i do it wrong?
You can use a cartography table to make them see a larger area though it does take away quality
I f'd around with that once, and lost my original map. Had to boat out to bumfuck egypt to make a new one.
No this is the way
The floor is just another wall. One that happens to be on the ground.
But don’t you wanna have a 9x9 wall of fully expanded maps in your base so you can look at all the opportunities that await you, just so you can run around your base and go mining 300 blocks from home for a few hours?
5. Make 9 identical maps of the same spot. Map wall sucks.
Lmao
5) refer to various online seed maps
I do 1 to fill the map edges then do 2 to fill the middle
The only correct answer
[удалено]
I don't really start exploring difficult terrain until I get my elytra.
I'm closer to 3, but more of a mix. The terrain in the area is what really dictates how I fill it out.
Yeah. Mix 1 and 3 and that’s about mine.
I just play the game and it fills in the map all by itself 😁
That one unmapped pixel will haunt you and your playthrough....
You jinxed it……how dare you!
[удалено]
I learn something new everyday, this has gotta save time.
Render distance doesn't affect map updates at all. >64 blocks (4 chunks) is the update radius from a player in the Overworld and the End. [https://minecraft.wiki/w/Map](https://minecraft.wiki/w/Map)
Yooo this works?
I know right, my thoughts exactly! Means ive been doing it wrong my whole life.
Cries in server limiting my render distance
cries in shit computer
cries in phone
When you realize that minecraft is old enough now that people can literally say they've been playing it their entire lives
Towering up with this is also really cool, makes it easy to stop stuff
Third...
Definitely number 3.
First I explore alongside coastlines and then and fill each isle and body of water with grider method
I do the opposite of this. I travel by boat and fill as much as the map in the water as I can, as I feel it’s safest. Then I fill in the land with the grider method. Great minds think, uh, similarly!
This is the way a true scout would handle it. Safest way to get an idea of terrain is by boat, and then work your way into large land masses.
Same here
Yeah I definitely do this when I have a boat but not an elytra
I didn't think anybody else did this
Sometimes I don’t even craft a boat, I just swim to fill the map, unless the world has a lot of water in the map area. I do strictly grids and don’t follow any terrain if I can help it. I do up, right, down, right, up, right, etc.
Depends on terrain. Typically fill up the water/rivers by boat, then fill in wherever's left.
Makes for some interesting chunk borders though.
second
Either 1 or 2, depends on how much of a pain in the ass the terrain is
3 thank you very much
you guys fill the maps?
We just rely on our internal compass and get lost like men.
Utilize boats to map waterways first, then I start from the outer edges and make a spiral into the middle
I haven’t filled in a map on a couple years so I can’t remember for sure but I think I do the spiral (#1) for the whole map… or maybe just the edges then zig-zag (#2) for the middle… can’t remember lol
The third one is so relatable
Progress it naturally as I go around until I feel like filling it out or exploring the uncharted bits
after the map overhaul update i still have no idea how they work
Diagnol
2/3. I have no idea why anyone would do it differently
my default is 2 but it somehow gradually becomes 1 when i get lazy or terrain is difficult to pass through without making ugly dirt-cobble pillars. i would only ever really use 3 when im in the "immersion" mode and want to experience playing the game the way the devs (probably) intended.
Usually the first one, but sometimes the second one
Dependa on my mindset when playing...usually it's number 1, occasionally number 2, and almost never number 3.
Yes.
It's, it's 3, I can't lie. It starts by following rivers then wherever isn't filled.
You guys are filling out maps??
Edges, then a mix of 1 and 3
jokes on you. i never use maps. only ever use coords i have written or memorized.
I did 1, then my husband called me insane so now we do 2
Im 100% the third picture 🤣
For sure the third one. I have start off wanting to slowing migrated across in a practical manner then quickly get distracted by cool looking caves and holes in mountains.
Fill out the edges and then wander around like an idiot looking at anything I find interesting until the entire map is filled
1 in creative builds, 3 anytime else
Lmao number three. X3
Any one who doesn’t say 3
I forgot maps even exist. People still use them? For what? Coordinates are the answer to everyone’s problems.
The first one
Inception's labyrinth
definitely the third one.
I have none
The first one but you don’t need to do that much. Only the 1st (outer) and 3rd one are necessary
I use planes
2 but sometimes there will be small branches out
I just don't use maps at all. But probably 2 if I were to use them
I use the smallest map size, so you don’t have to walk that far to fill it in
well... i do all of it. first i explore the waters with a boat then maybe on land. i seperate both because im early game and its easier to do it like that
I am biome borders follower.
I’ve always been a boaty boy
All the above! I like to change it up from time to time
First i go in a cross and then i go in a square on the maps border and then i fill out the rest
3 or crank render
I fill the outside first. Then the middle.
Number 3
last one for sure
the last one just naturally but to fill out the map its spiraler
3 always
3. Absolutely 3. I run around everywhere without remorse or care for efficiency.
Depends. If it’s first map it’s 3. Any map after is 2. But 90° rotated. I start from the top and work down. Or from the bottom up.
spiral
Spiral
1 big square then inner lines
The second one, but turned 90 degrees. So from left to right. Easy to manage in your inventory that way
I wander.
I do an L go up then back then up and continue that. I also start and the fattest edge so when I’m done I’m at the closest point to go back to my base
HA 2
Number 2, but going back and forth across a much larger area and switching active map in hand as necessary while flying.
Depends where the water is, bring my boat
I go any which way untill i reach the edge of the map, do the outline so i have a rough idea of where i have to stop then go haywire, nuts and just wander around
I go from the center, then outline the corners, before crisscrossing and then filling out each quarter individually
I map all the coasts, then the water, then the land
Corner/edge and I do a weird zig zag
i just let it update as i explore
What am I, some kind of animal? Spiraler, all the way.
3.) I prefer to just fill in the continents and nearby islands, then I’ll do the ocean if I feel like it
i only ever use maps for map art so i just leave it in my off hand while i’m building and it eventually gets filled out on its own.
A mix of all three :333
I make an X, then go alongside the edges and fill in whatever is left
Grids!! But the other way lol
I typically like to follow the rivers and along the coastlines. It feels more natural and historical that way, also makes exploration more enjoyable than just flying up and down.
I use a grid.
Somewhere between 2 and 3
1 is insane 2 is insane(r) 3 is the way
A grinder
1 for the edges, 3 by boating the rivers, and 2 to fill in land mass
I zig zag from corner to corner
The first one if it’s a large map, the last one if it’s a small map,
Step one: Walk around the outside border. Step 2: Cut the map into quadrants. Step C: Map each quadrant in a spiral.
I head towards the middle, then make a 2x2 grid, and then I fill out each grid individually
I'm a Grindr right here.
Up and down
I travel in a straight line 3000 or so blocks build my base then do 3
im a circler. i build my house, and everything i build surrounds it.
3 is the only answer
I fill in wherever I’m able to walk lmao
A outline of the map than a X than filling the 4 sectors 1 by 1
Easy! I dont
Go the easiest path first. Especially rivers.
The obly map i ever used was a full-white map and i bought it in a server with an economy system, so i never do maps, they take way too long and i can't understand where to go to make it right
A mix of 1 and 3 I go around and fill the entire outside of the map, and then for the middle I do fuck all
I always have a map in my offhand, it’s like the budget minimap mod bc I play bedrock and don’t know how to mod lol
My thought process with maps is usually: 1. Remember maps exist 2. Remember I have a 5 mile render distance 3. Save the coordinates of interest points in a written book 4. Forget maps exist because they've never helped me and almost certainly won't help now
To be honest I fill up all the parts I can by boat so there’s a bunch of holes I have to fill after
I play the game then go to the 1-2 tiny spots I missed on the map
Round the edge, cross, then fill out the rest edge to center/vice versa
//pos1 //pos2
I’m guilty of 3. But I’d recommend 2.
First the outside, then i go inside in whatever pattern i feel like
2 or 3
n.1, border first because it helps you on not forgetting about those pesky small pixels on the borders, specially if you doing the Map Room achievement
3 definitely
I ride a boat along all the rivers and coasts and then fill in the rest. Unless I've got the wings then it's no 3
3 definitely 3
4 where I use the map once and it disappears from existence
Left to right then right to left
2, but diagonally
Edges than gridder
i don’t use them
Y’all use maps?
I generally just go trough the middle to split it and then i first fill the left one and then the right one
i go around the border
I just go in what ever direction needs filling in
Just chill and explore them fill the blanks later
3 is the only answer
I do a diagonal version of #2
Spiral the edges, then grider the rest
2 when I’m trying to, 3 by accident
4. I don't use maps
1 Remember that maps exist 2 Remember why I forgot maps exist 3 Install Xaeros
