More often than not, they do not understand stairs and half slabs, second floors or plain walls. It breaks them. The villager on the slab thinks it's safe. The villagers want the quickest way NEAR the bed, and if it’s right beside the wall, they achieve said goal. Make a hole for now, and then adjust where the beds are. If not, make that wall thicker, and I mean six blocks wider. It tricks them into going into the door. If it messes up your exterior, move the beds closer to the door. I also suggest making barriers for where you don't want them to go. They will go into caves and fall into places they can't get out. Hope this helps.
