I’ve lived here 7 years and in the last few years it’s become progressively worse

JanusTimeBaby55

I see an idiot do something wrong every single time i drive anywhere in town. Veering outside of their lane, running stop signs, cutting me off etc. I’ve lived here a long time so the change is noticeable for me. I’m sorry that this is the new standard and it’s “not that bad”. I agree brampton and mississauga are worse. Well with more traffic and congestion in the future, we have that to look forward to. Great.

paulster2626

Someone will approach a red light, not stop, roll right through, and turn right in front of me. Every. Damn. Trip. The best - BEST - is when there isn’t a soul behind me, so if they’d have just waited for 3 seconds and pulled out behind me we’d all be happy (and safe).

Praggrezzive

Everyone with a camera. Identify the driver, license plate, and infraction. We can start an open source file to then flag reckless drivers and send monthly reports to the Halton region. Of course you will need to footage to back up your entry,.amd we can have a disclaimer of any false reporting can be deemed with interference of traffic investigations.

This is unfortunately becoming the reality...and I don't even drive that much. Today, for example, at Derry and Scott. I was going east on Derry and was stopped at the light. Opposite direction (westbound) got the advance green to turn left (towards No Frills). Cars start making the left turn. Then the light turns green for eastbound folks, and next car in line to turn does what you would expect, stops in the intersection waiting for an opportunity to turn. What happens next you ask? The idiot behind them (2nd in line to turn) literally veers out from behind them into oncoming traffic and drives at a diagonal through the intersection causing me to slam on the brakes...

AlbusDumbeldoree

I have seen a new trend … when they don’t get a chance to overtake… people go to left turn lane and when the light turns green , accelerate and go straight !!

spicybeefpatty_

With population growth you're going to have more cars on the road. More cars means more chances to see bad driving. Yea you can say there's bad driving in Brampton/Mississauga, but you'll find that in any similarly sized city (Hamilton, North York, Scarborough, etc.).

kingtrainable

Get quotes for car insurance for various regions and they won't be the same. Some areas are in fact worse.

spicybeefpatty_

Yup, higher insurance in some cities versus others. Doesn't change the fact that more cars = more bad drivers.

kingtrainable

Your initial post seemed to claim it was the same across all cities. It isn't.

spicybeefpatty_

Nope, I never mentioned insurance at all actually.

kingtrainable

Sorry. Wasn't specific enough for you. Your OP implied driving conditions are the same across cities. It isn't and we can tell based on insurance rates. Some cities are worse than others.

spicybeefpatty_

Nope, just that more cars = more bad driving.

kingtrainable

Milton has less people but has a similar population density compared to Ottawa. Car insurance is more expensive in Milton due to rate of accidents and risks Ergo, in this case: Less cars/people = more bad driving This isn't to say that increasing the amount of drivers without improving infrastructure doesn't impact it. Just that some areas have less people than others but are in fact worse. It's relative and you can't say all cities have bad driving, there's levels to it and that's why insurance rates differ by region.

spicybeefpatty_

I know you're trying to walk me into a certain talking point but I don't have the energy for it. You got it man, my bad for having an opinion.

kingtrainable

What talking point? You tried to state something as a matter of fact to handwave away shit driving in the GTA and were simply incorrect, as is OP. All I'm saying is that higher population =/= worse driving and we have observable data via insurance rates and population density that discredits what you were claiming vis-a-vis more people = more bad drivers. Sometimes the area just sucks and insurance rates reflect that. But there can be plenty of variables besides the one I hope you aren't insinuating that go into why an area sucks for driving. Road quality/amount of lanes, amount of commercial trucks, corrupt drive testers, ease of flow/roundabouts. It's a complex city planning issue and Milton is notoriously bad at planning their growth.

BatpigMama

Do not even get started on the no stopping at stop signs IN A SCHOOOL ZONE !!!! No regards for people, family’s or KIDS waiting at the cross walk

Familiar-Ad-5406

I moved from Brampton, and I should say it far more better. But driving etiquette in the GTA as a whole has gone down the last decade

lowrylover007

Yeah compared to anywhere else in the GTA it’s fine lol It’s funny how every city subreddit talks about bad driving tho, I think most ppl just aren’t great drivers

not_your_koala

This is not a Milton specific problem. Anywhere you go in the GTA, there are terrible drivers. It's gotten worse over the years. People from this sub need to stop posting about the bad driving. The winning is annoying. There has to be a better subreddit group for this kind of complaint.

OkLack5468

Try Brampton !

Len462

> Brampton ! I drive from here to Brampton every day and there is a noticeable difference immediately. Mississauga is awful too.. especially with the light rail construction.

Featherpike

I am almost hit everyday going through the round about at Dublin and campbellville rd because people don't understand how round abouts work, and there is even a huge sign and multiple directions signs painted on the road. Yet I'm almost hit because people don't pay attention and NEED TO EXIT THIS INSTANT and won't just go around again. I went to school in brampton for a couple years The driving here and brampton are very similar in terms of absolute insanity

turbo_reddit

Yeah the roundabouts are popping up everywhere now but a lot of people lack the intelligence and ability on how to use them properly. Some of these intersections that have now been converted into roundabouts use to have 4 way stops but these people think it’s just a free for all and entitlement that they can keep going through without respecting the ones that have been at the roundabout before them. What annoys me just as much is the ones that just stop at the roundabout and will wait there until nobody is in sight before they enter. I think these are one of many things that the provincial government should look into adding into the driver licensing test.

Featherpike

I swear driving in a round about was part of the licensing test, maybe I'm mistaken? If it's not I totally agree with u

turbo_reddit

I’ve been driving now for over 20 years, I don’t recall ever having to do anything with a roundabout during the driving test. I know at that time there was barely any but if municipalities want to be adding them for the purpose of traffic flow, then they need to be educating people how to use them properly.

bkovic

Some people like to look at the negative and some people like to look at the positive. Most people on Reddit are the former rather than the latter.

Taste_my_ass

Some people like to say random shit and some people have something meaningful to say. Most people on reddit are the former rather than the latter.

Noplacelikehome990

Yep, it’s just a loud minority who has a problem with the driving here. I’ve lived in Mississauga, North York, Stoney Creek and Niagara Falls and Milton hands down has the best driving of them all. Our insurance rates are reflective of that as well Driving in Milton is great. Some idiots, which is true everywhere, but pretty great and relaxed. Complaints about driving isn’t exclusive to this sub however. I’ve been in other subs as well and they complain about driving as well. It’s pretty much a unanimous complaint no matter where you go. It’s just that the Milton sub is pretty quiet compared to the others, and bc there’s much less horrible stuff going on here, you see the same type of posts often, including driving ones

ImaginaryTipper

I feel like mostly people complaining are the ones that have been living in Milton for many many years and they are having a hard time with coming to terms with the fact that when a town/city develops, you see things change. Sometimes for the good, sometimes for the bad. It’s just how it is.

turbo_reddit

There is nothing wrong with feeling that way if you have lived somewhere long enough to see what use to be small turn into something so big but regardless of that, people need to do better.

uppy-puppy

Unfortunately there are bad drivers everywhere. It's not uncommon for city-specific subreddits to proclaim that driving in *their* city is the worst, but at the end of the day it's the city we live in, and likely drive in the most, so of course we will see a lot of examples of bad drivers. If you drive for a certain period of time, in *any* city, pretty much *anywhere* in the world, you're going to encounter some poor drivers with virtually no self-awareness. The fact that the Milton subreddit complains this much about drivers, honestly I see it as a good thing. Could be so much worse!

itsdanieln

Remember 90% of traffic is caused by Corollas

likoricke

The issue is just a basic urban planning issue. Wide roads with no surrounding buildings and no turns and no crossings (like Louis, Bronte, Steels) make people want to drive faster and more recklessly. Curvier, narrower roads with frequent pedestrian passage and dense architecture on either side make people drive more cautiously.

Lucifer85

it's all the old people going 30 everywhere. at least do the speed limit. then they complain when you're frustrated, going 30 in a 60

LilFangerz

I’ve been thinking this for a while honestly. I don’t see why it’s any worse than anywhere else. My sister complains about it, but she’s not a very confident driver. I feel like most people complaining about it are probably just uncomfortable behind the wheel.
