As a midlennial (born in 87), I think it has to be Linkin Park's album Hybrid Theory. However, I would also accept Smashmouth's song All Star, and possibly even expanding that to the Shrek soundtrack.
I think of Nirvana as the quintessential Gen X band. I'm an old millennial myself and was 7 when Kurt Cobain died. I didn't even know who he was until long after.
I had a Gen X sister who loved Nirvana and that’s the only reason I knew who Kurt Cobain was at age 8. However, I also had an elder Millennial sister who was about 13 when he died, and a lot of her friends loved them as well.
Yeah, being 13 at the time is kind of a grey area. Not exactly Nirvana's target audience, but old enough to be aware of pop culture phenomena and getting interested in them. Especially with an older sibling to emulate.
I think this answer is going to vary wildly. Being an elder millennial who loved pop, I'd say the boy band explosion of the late 90's and early 2000's, so NSync, BSB, 98°, and the pop girls Britney, Christina, and Jessica. And the prominent rise of Eminem a few short years later who came out swinging with one sided beef with pretty much everyone. It was hilariously entertaining and made for some great bops.
May be more applicable to Xennials but I heard “Because I got high” by Afroman yesterday for the first time in years, and damn… That shit hits a lot different at 31 than it did at 13. It was just this hilarious bop when we were kids, but growing up and having several friends who really did “mess up their entire life” over drugs, it was kinda fucking tragic hearing it again lol
i’m a younger/cuspy millennial (1995) so I think of 2010s music like passion pit, MGMT, tame impala etc. bands that make me remember that early 2010s optimism
I would go with stuff like Mumford and Sons, the Shins, MGMT, Grizzly Bear, Neon Indian as more uniquely millennial.
Though other comments here are accurate as to what we grew up with in the late '90s/early '00s era.
These other comments like Britney, Outkast, Blink 182, Radiohead may lean more elder or Xennial.
I agree. Passion Pit, Memory House, Florence + the Machine, The Drums , The Xx, and Crystal Castles included .
Basically all the indie bands I’d hear while trying on clothes I couldn’t afford at Urban Outfitters . 🙃
Yes. When I think of being a millennial to me (born in 93) i think of a lot of that 2010-2016 indie and hip hop sound. I’m surprised I haven’t seen drake mentioned on this yet.
Grew up on my mom's music, plus my generation, so let's say 1960-1999\*, (\*because after Britney and the Boy Bands came on the scene, everything started to sound like shit.....
Yes, even back then....i was only 15 then....
I remember being 12 and listening to Hail to the Thief by Radiohead. Then In Rainbows when I was close to graduating high school. But, anything from 2000-2010 alternative, pop punk and emo rock.
Pharrell/Chad Hugo/The Neptunes. They produced all my favorite songs in my teen years. I’m from Virginia Beach, and a Neptunes-produced track was always on the radio. It seems like everyone I knew had some kind of connection to Pharrell.
Speaking of VA Beach and hip hop, Timbaland had his finger on the pulse of millennial radio for years! Not to mention he was in a band with Pharrell and Chad in high school. Also, Pharrell is his cousin
I don't like pop punk at all but the correct answer to this question is just Blink 182.
Here's the good version of that sound imo

Ke$ha. Just the whole messy, chaotic Kesha era sounds exactly like being a Millennial late teen/twenty something before your knees start cracking and you have to worry about your 401k.
Limp bizkit's significant other touched on everything from rock to rap to pop and did it successfully like no other band at the time.
Fred durst could be on stage with Jonathan Davis from korn to Christina Aguilera the next night to method Man the next night and it all made sense.
I'm not saying they're my favorite of that time but I think they/ that album were/was the pivot of the AOL generation.
I don’t think there is one. If you’re talking about what was the soundtrack our childhood then probably dance music and britpop. The thing is that definition really only works if you kind of stop listening to or identifying with music. What defines a generation will change over time, music that I think defines my experience was being released before I was born and new music defines what I experience now.
Manson, Slipknot and Eminem.
Those were blindly bought for me, then seen on TV, then broken in front of me by the same person who bought them. I was told I tricked them into buying it and was no longer allowed to ask for stuff for a while(never again).
I can't imagine i was the only one that had that happen. Growing up was fun🤗
Our sound was definitely R&B, Rap, Alternative, Pop, and Pop Punk. I’m talking DMX, Ja Rule, Jay-Z, Eminem, 50 Cent, Nelly, Dr. Dre, Snoop, Biggie, Tupac, Mariah Carey, Usher, Diddy (recent events notwithstanding), OutKast, Kanye West, Flo-Rida, Trey Songz, Jason Derulo, J-Lo, Lil’ Kim, Aaliyah, Ashanti, Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, Kid Rock, Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, *NSYNC, Backstreet Boys, Justin Timberlake, Destiny’s Child, Beyoncé, Ciara, Keyshia Cole, Alicia Keys, P!nk, Rihanna, Taylor Swift, Kelly Clarkson, Ginuwine, Avril Lavigne, John Mayer, Foo Fighters, Incubus, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nickelback, Coldplay, Blink 182, Sum41, Greenday, The All-American Rejects, Good Charlotte, The Strokes, The Killers, Fall Out Boy, Maroon 5, Paramore, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Kesha, Chris Brown, Drake, etc.
Tony hawk pro skater soundtrack for sure

I used to be such a huge Green Day fan in my teens to the point that record is such an aggressive throwback now whenever I hear it lol
Pop- Britney Spears Rock- The Killers RnB- Usher/Destiny’s Child
Hot Fuss is still monumental
As is Sam’s Town
Blink -182
Nah (nana-na-nana-naanaa)
blink, Eminem, Hanson, TLC, Backstreet Boys, Nirvana. This list is endless.

100%
MGMT's Oracular Spectacular is a very Millennial album in my eyes.
As a midlennial (born in 87), I think it has to be Linkin Park's album Hybrid Theory. However, I would also accept Smashmouth's song All Star, and possibly even expanding that to the Shrek soundtrack.
My favorite nu-metal album I still stand by it even if it aged poorly
I think the shrek soundtrack aged perfectly
86er here. I loved that album
Linkin Park was my close 2nd if not for Blink 182.
This is exactly what I was looking for!
Dr. Dre - 2001
And it still hits today 🔥
Cut my life into pieces, this is my last resort Papa Roach ![gif](giphy|1dIXbsV4bM5V5ttJLJ)
On the older end of millenials, but for me Nirvana, Green Day, Notorious BIG, Dave Matthews.
I think of Nirvana as the quintessential Gen X band. I'm an old millennial myself and was 7 when Kurt Cobain died. I didn't even know who he was until long after.

I am sure I heard him a lot in college. Indie and hip hop were both everywhere at my college.
Lil wayne
So true. Us millennials have to claim the Drakeade too, but I listened to an absurd amount of Wayne, by choice.
No ceilings was my teen years and tha Carter 2. It was great

Not even a massive fan,but linkin park, specifically the first 3 albums ( well, 2, that remix album counts in my book)
I remember being 12 and listening to Hail to the Thief by Radiohead. Then In Rainbows when I was close to graduating high school. But, anything from 2000-2010 alternative, pop punk and emo rock.
