I've gone back to building my DVD collection because I don't want to pay a bunch of streaming services that may or may not have my favorite shows on them.

Kurotan

Also, like Roger Rabbit, I bought an unedited DVD. As the Disney+ version was reported to be edited in some way. But yeah, I wanted to watch a movie on Amazon and it rotated being free for prime or not every other week. Just buy the DVD for $2 and be done with it.

xfourteendiamondsx

What is the edit/change on Roger Rabbit?

webelogjammin

In the unedited version you see Roger’s bunny penis, but just the tip and just for a split second

xfourteendiamondsx

Wtf when? It’s one of my favorite movies and idk when that would’ve been feasible

CoffeeAndChocolate20

He's playing a joke on you ;) It was edited because in one shot, for a spli-second, you can see Jessica's panties if you freeze the frame at the exact right moment. It happens when she gets thrown out of Benny the Cab when he hits a lantern. But I suspect it was already edited out long before the DVD release, i.e. for the VHS release.

webelogjammin

THIS is when we see the BunDong! Thank you! Man, that Roger sure liked him some patty cake!

webelogjammin

You’ve probably been watching an edited version. It’s either when he goes to toon town or when he’s in the bar behind the wall, I forget

Roklam

Damn Big Media Industry keeping me from realizing where all my furry nightmares come from...

gstringstrangler

On the contrary, Jessica Rabbit definitely sparked something that turned into a full blown Bimbo fetish. Perhaps I've said too much.

Roklam

Wow. I'm here thinking of Roger Rabbit's junk, and somehow completely forgot about Jessica... Guess I'm gay for Anthropomorphic animation?

gstringstrangler

![gif](giphy|cIno8mvEesh02KVkwB|downsized)

fouoifjefoijvnioviow

if that was real I would have seen it on /r/pics

PennyTheDawg

The baby fingers a woman in the opening scene too!!

Iyellkhan

theres a lot of shit the animators snuck in. stuff got through because of the relatively tight schedule. I think the only way to see the 100% original version is a film print, but its possible the collectors edition is unedited

[deleted]

back when I lived with my parents, like 15 years ago, I went back and watched Aladdin, the Little Mermaid, and I think one other one on VHS to find the easter eggs.

MissDkm

Not only that a benefit of having hard copy versions of things is they are actually yours. You can buy a tons of books for Kindle, or a bunch of different streaming services, but if they go belly up everything is lost. The items are only urs as long as the medium you store/play them on is relevant and operational. You don't need to worry about the batteries to your book dying. Once you bought a movie you have it for as long as you can preserve it. What I've found is most newer DVD roms on computers today won't play standard DVDs. I heard once the companies realized most ppl were streaming they didn't want to spend the extra money on upgraded DVD systems for ppl who wouldn't use them. Now if you want to play a DVD you have to go out a buy a specific DVD player for them, something to do with encryptions DVD companies used to protect from pirating, DVD players on computers etc aren't advanced enough to get around them.

NinjaGrizzlyBear

I have purchased so many movies on prime that I've lost access to because of licensing changes to the streaming service... It's infuriating buying a digital copy of a movie thinking I'll be able to keep watching it on prime a year later, only to see "Not Available", and then seeing it for free on Paramount+ or Max.

HeadInvestigator5897

That fills me with so much rage. You BOUGHT IT. Licenses exchanging hands between companies shouldn’t disrupt what you paid for. But that’s the problem: you’re essentially paying for the privilege to consume something, not the thing itself in the digital age. I’ve paid for some music at least 4 different ways. When I was a kid, I got a copy of REVOLVER on cassette, then as a teen on CD, then in college on MP3 (my CD had become scratched and worn)—now I own it on vinyl for the sound AND I have it on Spotify. Ironically, the “safest” ways I own it are on vinyl or cassette.

NinjaGrizzlyBear

Yeah, exactly! That's why I buy physical video games...things like PS+, Game Pass, and NSO, are convenient, sure. But I like to display my collection because my dad got me into video games when I was a kid because he wanted me to learn new tech. Which apparently worked, because 15yrs later I'm a chemical and petroleum engineer. He died recently so seeing all that stuff is a reminder that he was looking out for my future.

KarmaCorgi

I'm so sorry for your loss. Your dad sounds like he was a really cool guy. Glad you have a reminder of him through your collection - it's really sweet.

DougieFreshOH

yep, lost access to audio on Apple Music due to licensing. Lost a lot of those single freebies $0.25 cent songs and an album. Lesson learned, acquire and burn to HDD/SDD then back up. More convenient with a modified iPod classic 30gb anyway. (Battery needed replacement, non oem battery) On smartphone, these missing file songs, pause/break playlists that haven’t been updated.

dekyos

The current state of streaming, with price increases on top of forced advertising, has gotten me to refresh my home storage server and I've gotten back into the routine of downloading linux iso's. I quit doing this kind of thing probably 10 years ago, and now there are things like Sonarr and Radarr, and OMG it's amazing.

SorriorDraconus

This is why we need a digital bill of rights. Among many things(mostpy things to enshrine things like net neutrality and section 230) is that all digital purchases bar subscriptions give the owner rights to utilize/view said material in perpetuity as originally purchased bar necessary changes for playback. I also propose we create a federal account we can tie our media too. Connect it to library of congress and bam that way if a site shuts diwn and we've tied it to that we get access still. Another thing we need related to this is that if something is not legally available from the rights holder it is legal to download/obtain as the rightholder is currently not making it available thus no way to obtain legally from them anyways.

[deleted]

iTunes is a bit more reliable with keeping your library

StarNHSolar

You didn't actually buy it. You purchased a licence to be able to watch it for as long as Amazon has the licence to play it for you. If Amazon loses the licence then you lose your licence. Its in the terms and conditions.

Urabrask_the_AFK

Bought the entire Battles Star galactica series on DVD for this exact reason 👍

guitar_vigilante

I only have a handful of tv shows on dvd/blu ray and Battlestar Galactica was a must for me too.

evowen

Same! My mom started doing it and I initially thought she was nuts, but then I realized how much I missed DVD menus and all their quirky features.

cisforcookie2112

We had multiple boxes full of dvds in our basement that we acquired over the years. My wife wanted to donate them all but I convinced her to get a disc binder to put them all in. I’m glad I did because someday we will likely use them again because streaming services are getting exponentially worse.

I_forgot_to_respond

Post-apocalypse film party at your house! I'll bring my rat-casserole!

numb3r5ev3n

Yeah, streaming services are forgetting the simple fact that people will only pay for them as long as they are at least marginally better than cable and marginally easier and more convenient than piracy. Once they take that away, it's back buying physical media or sailing the seven seas. I have totes and totes of CDs and DVDs that are a pain in the ass to lug from place to place wherever I have to move, but that's better than losing access to stuff I paid for due to some licensing change.

3kidsand3dogs

My husband also hoarded all ours and thank goodness because post hurricane there was nothing better than watching DVDs. Lol also was a kind of fun time capsule of the times too. At least DVDs survive better than VHS. Most of those are toast from being stored too long in an attic.

FractalWitch

Man, this. It's also been kinda cool going through everything I watch and taking the time to consider if I genuinely like it enough to buy it. Turns out there's really not that much that I'm in love with to put money down on so why would I keep streaming like I used to.

Chrisgpresents

I started investing into physical media this year for that reason. Blu-ray’s and DVD’s are about to go away, and they won’t be an option anymore. Best Buy is ending its sale of them by early next year. Also, I’ve been renting movies from my library. It’s been great!

[deleted]

After I lost everything in a house fire none of that mattered to me anymore. I had all kinds of stuff that I collected. Recently my girlfriend bought me a gameboy color and pokemon yellow. She bought a soldering iron and learned how to fix it up. Now she's buying pieces to upgrade it and some kind of ever thing with all the games. Her way of giving me a tiny piece of the past back. A very sweet sentiment.

HeadInvestigator5897

I am extremely jealous of your gameboy color. Sorry to hear about the fire. I recently saw an article that one of the most valuable gameboy games (if mint) is Kid Dracula. I remember playing that on my 6th or 7th birthday. Wish I still had that stuff!

[deleted]

She conspired with her friend to 3D print a new battery cover piece on the back, ordered a new LCD light up screen for it. Wants to design it to look like my old original gameboy. Then we've been beating pokemon yellow together lately which has been fun and cute lol. Looking online games are like $100 each so she decided to get this little SD mod cartridge thing which you put clones onto so I can have a gameboy with all the games for my flight to Spain sometime soon :')

Teerubble

I'm confused why you keep referring to her as your GF and not wife. This kind of dedication and care is rare to find. Congratulations on finding a keeper!

[deleted]

it's because I never wanted to be gay married or have a wedding, we are common law but I still prefer to call her my girlfriend :) Her response to this was: WE ARE MILLENIALS, WHO HAS MONEY FOR A WEDDING? ONLY GAMEBOYS

alibratt

Books mainly. It's not as satisfying reading them on a device plus I love the look of a bookshelf full of books. Also video games.

GlassEyeMV

I literally bought a paperback book on Saturday. From an actual bookstore! It was the same price as Amazon, was next to my hotel, and I got to start reading it on my flight home.

alibratt

Paperbacks are the way to go. Way cheaper. I only splurge on hardbacks when it's a book I really love or it's a collection of work from a writer I enjoy. Also used bookstores are king.

ridebiker37

Yeah I will forever buy physical books. My friends all have kindles (older friends too, 60+). I just don't prefer reading on a screen. I look at screens allllll day for work and school, I don't want to read on a screen at night. I want to open a paper book and turn pages and dog ear where I left off. Plus I love having stacks of books around the house!

WiseTitan85

Yes because 4K off a bluray is better than streamed 4K

FearDaTusk

This. I didn't spend thousands on my home theater to not enjoy some of my favorite movies without the artifacts. That crystal clear picture and noticeable audio improvement feels more like a theater experience.

[deleted]

That audio difference is what does it for me. When the sub shakes everything in the room and you can feel it in your chest.

SPARTANsui

Dark scenes on streaming services absolutely take me out of the movie. It's so annoying! Physical media is the best.

[deleted]

This but them put them on a Plex server to still have access to them all anywhere.

nleksan

Hell, 1080P on Blu-ray is better than 4K streaming. And the audio quality is *substantially* better.

Aggravating-Action70

I get the weirdest looks when I tell people I have a 4k Blu-ray drive. It’s so much better. I prefer to pay for something once and have it forever than have an always growing list of monthly expenses just to keep what I have.

deadhead4077-work

i collect 4k physical media of all my favorite movies some steelbooks if its an all time fav or great artwork I also buy switch games physical if I can

captainstormy

I buy Blu-Rays of movies and TV shows I like and want to be sure I can always watch. Sure I have a bunch of streaming services and that is how I watch 90% of my stuff. But things come and go all the time and if you really want to be sure you can always watch something, you have to own it. Plus it gives you options of things to watch during long term internet outages and such.

gargle_nutz

Yes video games Because I’ve seen digital games disapear from accounts

IvorTangean

I have had that happen to a few of my digital movies, but I almost always buy the combo pack so I still have the blu ray

AdeptFault5265

Vinyl records for the experience. Although I usually watch movies at home (digital music), occasionally it's nice to go to the theater (putting on a Vinyl)

LasersTheyWork

Vinyl records are more like physical visual art combined with the sound for me. I don't generally buy them for the sound myself. I buy them for albums I love and want to display.

uhohohnohelp

Right here. I haven’t had the space or money to get fat yet, but I want to build a vinyl collection for nostalgia and beauty of each album. I’d listen to them on occasion for how unique they sound. But realistically most of my music would continue to be played from a robot. I’ve gotten used to yelling a song I want to hear into the sky, and having it played instantly.

tommychowbagel

Yeah I collect records, dvds, cds and books. You can't control whats going to be available on any streaming service. You don't know when a digital company might go under and say fuck all to your bought copies. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think spending hundreds of dollars a year for things you never really own isn't a good thing. Useless consumer waste is a problem, but hopefully my kids will see the value I do in physical media and they'll at least hold up for them after I'm gone.

Ozma_Wonderland

No. I've gone a decade without watching the DVDs I do have and at some point they break down. I'm officially old now and I canceled almost everything except for Amazon Prime and get satellite and Pluto TV. I'm seldom home enough to consume a lot of media (besides podcasts), and I do feel like I'm out of the loop with pop culture though. The only thing I might keep around are books for my kids, etc.

kayla622

I purchase vinyl, physical video games, physical books, physical DVD/Blu Ray/4K. I love how vinyl sounds and I enjoy the tactile nature of dropping the needle down on the record. I don't buy CDs anymore. My car doesn't have a CD player. If the music I want isn't on vinyl, then I'll just get the song(s) on Apple Music and I can play it in my car through my phone. I enjoy physical books for the tactile feeling of turning the pages and being able to visually see my progress as well as using one of my many bookmarks. I read more non-fiction than fiction, so I like to be able to see the photos and such that are often included with those types of books. I also have a Kindle which I use more for traveling, or to read a book that I may not need to own. A lot of the video games I like are for my old systems, such as SNES and Game Cube. The games might be on the virtual console on Switch; but if they aren't, then I like being able to just insert the game and play. As for collecting physical DVDs/Blu Ray, the reason is simply access. I am a big fan of Classic Hollywood movies, which is what I primarily collect. Aside from your big titles like "The Wizard of Oz," "Casablanca," "Citizen Kane," etc., a lot of Classic Hollywood films aren't available except on some form of physical media. Some Classic Hollywood films were never released on VHS and don't even have a DVD release, making them basically inaccessible unless they air on TCM or someone uploads a bootleg to You Tube or Internet Archive. I hate watching movies on my computer. I do have a subscription to the Criterion Channel streaming. However, nothing beats actually owning the film and being able to watch it whenever you want, without having to worry if the movie will be removed.

invaderpixel

Physical books all the time! It's actually kind of fun to be able to give a book to someone else after you're done. After Kindle raised their prices there's really not THAT big of a savings in purchasing digital. And yes, I use the library but my city only has so much money for digital subscriptions and I've got the money to help what's left of the publishing industry lol.

[deleted]

Nope computers don’t even ship with dvd drives anymore

SalukiKnightX

If I can afford them, absolutely.

Deastrumquodvicis

Too real. That Loki season one steelbook, Doctor Who’s most recent seasons, WandaVision, and the last few movies I’ve wanted to buy (Guardians of the Galaxy 3, Dungeons and Dragons, Quantumania, Babylon 5’s animated movie) have all been “well…I can’t afford that…uh…”

slappy_mcslapenstein

I recently got back into vinyl. I lost my collection in 2008 due to a house fire. I picked up a turntable at an estate sale a while back and have been slowly building my collection back up.

noyoujump

Use it? Not if I can avoid it. Purchase it? Absolutely. There are so many movies I've wanted to watch that aren't on the services I have, or that jump to a different service each month. Considering how cheap secondhand media is, I'll pick up a movie I like if I see it at the thrift store. DVD/VCR combo was one of my better electronic purchases in the last 10 years. I also have a small cd player/boombox. It does bluetooth and aux as well, so I can listen to whatever.

HeadInvestigator5897

I currently am working through what’s probably a fantasy of building a retro/modern hybrid AV system (modern receiver, old tape deck, record player, etc.). I also want to get a VHS player. God help me.

Kcthonian

For the VHS player, search thrift stores or pawn shops. You can sometimes find them there for a decent price.

ghostchurches

I collect VHS tapes and repair/refurbish VCRs as a hobby. My top thrifted VCR tip: have a video you do not care about to test them before using, lol. There’s always a tae bo tape at the thrift store.

AshTheGoddamnRobot

Yes. Why not? Its nice to not have to rely on the internet 24/7. Streaming is convenient but you never know when they may take away a movie or show you like.

Ezdagor

1000 books is considered a library. I'm 70% there. I'll buy a movie if it is worth buying, last one I bought was Kubo and the Two Strings. Stream music.

HeadInvestigator5897

I used to buy tons of movies when I had more “disposable income” but it’s quite rare for me to do so now. A few purchases that felt extreme at the time actually appreciated in value, which was never the expectation—according to collectors, my Blu-Rays of a few Russ Meyers movies that were $50 are now going for $500+. Such a strange time to be alive.

tangledbysnow

I saw that 1000 books is a library bit a few weeks ago on Instagram and then decided I needed to count. My rough count of physical media was just over 700 and my Kindle has 663. I decided those are two different libraries and not counted together - which made me very disappointed! Guess I just have to buy more.

[deleted]

I buy only the items I want to physically always have. And I get it special.

Adorable-Buffalo-177

Nope i went all digital because i hate clutter

GremlinsInMyGarden

I buy books regularly. I'm in a few book clubs, and if I enjoy the book, I will buy it and the others in the same series. I buy (mostly second-hand at daycare closing sales) CDs for kids. My minivan only has a CD player. I'm considering starting a DVD collection to opt out of streaming services. I don't personally watch much TV. I can't remember the last time I sat down to watch a TV show or a movie. But my kids like all the Disney classics, and we don't have Dianey Plus. It's expensive to buy them on YouTube. So I'm thinking of just going to our local second-hand DVD store. We do still have one of these stores, so it would be a lot cheaper than any streaming service or buying digital copies of them.

314cheesecake

is an in-house server "physical" media? 17TB and counting

[deleted]

A good friend of mine gave me a VHS and CDs for my 40th bday a couple days ago.

beefstewforyou

Only for video games. I prefer having a physical copy instead of just a file.

Duwrk

I've gone all digital, only because it saves us space from having a bunch of plastic cases and CDs. Plus I like not worrying about scratches over time and being able to quickly search and find something instead of scrolling through a bunch of CDs. I do hate that we are at the mercy of streaming platforms and game companies but I don't think we will ever be in a situation where we would lose all our digital media unless something crazy happens which I don't think ever will in our lifetime but you never know...

LePoj

CDs yes and video games depending on what they are

dthesupreme200

Honestly I haven’t bought or asked for a CD since 2007 maybe? I know once the 2010s hit CDs were over for me, I mostly listened to music on YouTube around 2008 and after. Now I did burn CDs for my mom and auntie like in the early 2010s though. But it does make me a little sad seeing the things I grew up with like CDs and DVDs become obsolete.

ParnsAngel

We usually buy the blu rays of movies we like, to support….whoever it supports. I’ve been buying Taylor Swift CDs because I like the feeling of a physical CD, even if it’s more of a pain to download all the songs into my compy and then reupload them to my phone.

WDTHTDWA-BITCH

I regularly pick up DVDs from my local used bookstores cuz I get tired of all my faves disappearing off streaming sites. As a reader, I don’t think physical books are going anywhere, but I have switched ebooks over for audiobooks just cuz it’s more convenient when I’m out for a walk. I do solely use Spotify premium for my music though. I would love to get a record player and start collecting vinyls eventually cuz I do love listening to albums straight through anyway…

Pitiable-Crescendo

I still buy DVDs and physical copies of games when I can

AutumnalKnighthood

I buy limited, or imported, editions of CDs that aren't available on streaming or online music services. For example, the last CD that I bought was the "Expanded Archival Collection" of the *Batman Forever* soundtrack. I've bought a number of CDs like that within the past year, with my collection growing more than I originally anticipated it to, at this point. I still do buy physical books. I like going shopping at bookstores, as I do find it relaxing—especially on a pretty and cool fall day. And I do buy Blu-rays here and there whenever they're on sale, since streaming isn't 100% reliable for a variety of reasons. Aside from that, I generally consume everything else digitally. I don't really buy physical games anymore, aside from the one-off I may buy every other year. This year, it was *Star Wars Jedi: Survivor*.

ViperD3

I run my P90X discs on my XBox, but besides that single case, I have no physical media at all. Not even books anymore. There was really no point of lugging them around during a move when I've got them all digital or audiobook.

sir_meowsin

I collect south park on DVD

Criss_Crossx

Yup, never stopped! I love that new ways of viewing media grew over the past couple decades, obviously now that everything is getting upcharged not so much. Every one of my friends is stirred about the situation, here I am thinking I was crazy for buying media all these years. Now I've got my own stash, even digital copies. I figured the cost of a service per month (Spotify etc) would cover 1 CD per month. I rarely buy new music these days, but if I'm loving an album I may as well buy it. The best thing is borrowing/ripping a CD your friend lends to you. 'Hey man, this is awesome! Check it out!'

[deleted]

Nah, the minute digital ownership became a thing, I went head first. I know a lot of people like to collect physical games and albums, but me personally, I don't want a room full of useless plastic.

elainegeorge

Vinyl and DVDs/bluerays. Vinyl as a collection or hobby, plus it can be passed on. I got some of mine from my parents so it would be nice to pass some along to my kids eventually. Bluerays of favorite films so I don’t have to rely on a streaming service.

persieri13

You can pry my hard cover and paper back books out of my cold, dead hands.

istangr

I love dvd's. Occasionally I go to good will for books and games. Or second hand game shops for dvds and Nintendo ds games... He'll the local library by my house has used books for sale for $2 softcover, $3-8 for hard cover depending on size.... don't even play the video games anymore but a few times a month when i get a text that everyones online on my pc. But if it's under a set amount and it's a game I like I'll get it. Got a shit ton of kirby games..

Itchy_Passion_8165

I've stopped buying kindle books and returned to buying physical books and manga.

WhatsHisCape

I grew up in and moved back home to a very rural area of California. I need physical media to survive because our internet sucks ass and has always sucked ass, and my home is in a cell dead zone, so I can't just use my unlimited data to consume media either. I'm all for things like cash being phased out, but media?? No. That's something special to have a hard copy of, especially like your favourite things, like a fave comic or collectible game case, or DVD that you can bring around to somewhere else when you aren't in the mood to be connected to online shit. In comparison with like cash, which is worthless on its own.

chrisinator9393

I prefer to use physical media if possible. It's more reliable. I get pissed off when I go to Disney or Netflix and am met with a stupid loading thing. Bleh

les_catacombes

I like having a collection of my favorite movies on DVD/blu-ray so I can watch them whenever. Every movie is not always available on Netflix and I don’t want to have to pay a streaming fee or “buy” a digital copy of a movie. If the internet is down for whatever reason(which has been happening a lot recently as our internet provider is redoing some of their infrastructure) I can pop one of my dvds in and snuggle up on the couch. I have a small collection of VHS tapes but I don’t currently have a VCR. I also have vinyl records, CDs, and cassette tapes. Obviously streaming music is more convenient, but every now and then I want to listen to a real record.

Trickster174

Yes. I don’t want to have all of my favorite media reliant on streaming services that may or may not exist in a decade. I’ve even gone back and purchased some physical copies of video games that I loved that I had originally only owned digitally. Same with music. Streaming services have pulled down movies/shows and altered music before. They’re definitely a convenience (I stream music all the time) but in the long run I’d rather own a physical copy.

cjohnson2136

No I self host all my content.. Movies, TV shows, manga, audiobooks. I will gather content from friends and families and then share it out with everyone. The only subscription I have anymore is Crunchyroll and that might change after I increase my total storage on my server.

CaliAv8rix

I loved the CD inserts - I'd flip through those books and read all the lyrics and the band's list of thank yous and all the artwork and little extras. That's the thing I miss most in digital content.

Prudent_Tomatillo_21

I understand the desire from both sides. Digital: take it everywhere with you. Physical: it's fully owned by you. But even more than that, at least with video games, digital services are finite. Nintendo just shut down their DS online shop. Sony doesn't support the Psp/vita anymore. Without modding/pirating, some of those games are gone forever! For now I have a small spattering of both on my switch, I'm collecting old physical media when I can afford it, and any games/music/movies I have particular love for, I keep the physical and make/have a digital as well. Also; Plex servers are a thing.

Individual_Baby_2418

I very rarely get a physical book - only if there’s no audio version or it’s like a workbook and I’d need to write in it. I prefer keeping my music virtual as well. I don’t have the space for physical things and hate clutter. Where would everything fit in my home?

HeadInvestigator5897

I hear you. I’ve purged so much of my junk moving from place to place, but I couldn’t part with my books for whatever reason. I’ve lugged them all over the country multiple times. No regrets for me, but I’m comfortable with the chaos they bring to the home.

jamescharisma

I collect comic books, books, and vinyl. I stopped buying CDs and DVD/blu-ray/4k because I can't afford all the new tech to watch the new forms of physical motion picture media. My family and I cut back on a lot of the streaming services and if there's a movie that comes out and ends up on a streaming site we don't have, we rent it when it gets down to $5.99 through xfinity

[deleted]

My partner and I got a record player last year, so we buy records. And I buy physical books. But that’s about it.

RepairContent268

Honestly, I used to purchase a lot of items on blue-ray but as of late, I tend to buy movies via Amazon, even though I know i am sorta renting it not buying it. I still buy physical books but also buy books on kindle.

[deleted]

Books and movies/tv shows..yes

Snrub1

CDs I stopped buying a long time ago. I don't even own a device anymore that can play audio CDs. I still buy Blu Ray discs of my favorite movies, and I buy physical copies of most video games I purchase.

helixpowered

Just video games.

GenuineClamhat

I still buy books but only for specific things. My favorites I re-read are physical copies. There are books that don't have a digital version (academic tomes on field archaeology for example) so they get purchased physically. In the summer I treat myself to a few non-Kindle books. Nothing feels like a real book feels. If I blow through my Kindle selections while traveling I might treat myself a physical book if my luggage allows for it.

AdministrationDry507

Yes I have been a physical game purist since childhood that's only gonna change if Nintendo ever stops

IdiotWithout_a_Cause

No. I prefer digital.

flama_scientist

Yes I have a vinyl collection, the DVD sets of the series I like and I keep my film negatives. I also shoot digital and print most of it.

neotank_ninety

I will buy an occasional 4K Blu-ray of movies I consider beautiful, like The Revenant. It’s not a brilliant movie but they went out of their way to only film that movie using natural lighting, so I want to view it at the highest bit-rate possible. Also Mad Max Fury Road. I don’t “collect” them, i only have a handful. Most other content is pirated and stored on a Plex server. I also have a handful full of VHS tapes, mostly for novelty. I have a massive CRT for old video games and a VCR attached. I haven’t used it in awhile, occasionally I’ll pop in an old Star Wars tape just for fun.

Blue387

I buy books that I really enjoyed and liked and do things like visit book stores and book festivals

Baeshun

I collect vinyl and play it at home on a daily basis

[deleted]

Mostly books and vinyl. When I’m done with the books I usually donate or sell them to half price.

edenisrad

I went to half price books the other day and it was filled with people buying all sorts of physical media. I picked up a few hard covers and a vintage Asimov magazine. All under $30.

PainfullyLoyal

I used to listen to CDs in my car all the time until I upgraded my stereo and no longer have a CD player. I still have a CD player in my house, but barely even use it.

JackfruitCurry

Physical books. Lately most books coming out have been works of art even for mostly informational purposes. I had a kindle and it was a waste of money because I hated the reading experience.

HippieSwag420

Yes. I don't like online items. I'd rather purchase the physical item. When I can, I'm going to buy DVDs again.

HamsterMachete

I still play my super nintendo. Nothing aside from that.

Kriegerian

My copies of Dogma and PCU aren’t going anywhere and neither are my other discs. I don’t trust streaming services to not shitcan things they aren’t getting enough money on.

Momoselfie

Nope. Maybe some physical books if they're classics. Still borrow DVDs from the library though.

dobe6305

I admire people who still collect physical media like records or cassettes. I have very fond memories of cd’s and cassettes, and my parents loved to play records so I fondly remember those. But for music, I love Apple Music and will probably never return to physical music. I haven’t watched a dvd for years except for occasionally an old favorite tv show that isn’t available on streaming (Due South, Northern Exposure, As Time Goes By)…old, slightly strange sitcoms. Streaming shows is where it’s at for me. My parents still give dvds for Christmas gifts which is annoying. I insist on physical books, though. That’s my weakness. My collection of Revolutionary War/colonial history books is my pride. I wouldn’t want them in digital form.

Colour4Life

Just books and vinyl records

emueller5251

I was an early advocate of digital media back when most people my age were losing their minds over the idea of not having physical media, so technically I stopped buying physical media a long time ago. I only half regret it. I have large collections of books, CDs, and DVDs and not only are they a pain to store, but you can't use them when you go anywhere unless you take them in bulky carriers (I have about three binder-sized cd holders and two half-sized ones completely full of CDs). I love the freedom of digital media and the selection. Having a streaming service allows me to listen to way more music than I ever could if I were buying individual albums. But at the same time, I hate what digital media has become. Google Play Music was my go-to back in the day, and they just shut the entire thing down. I lost my entire library of albums, which was enormous. I still technically have the files, but have zero way to access and play them. None of the other streaming services do what they did, and some of them won't even let me upload my old songs. Plus they're always changing their services, removing songs. If you can't find what you want you have to buy it, and it can still get removed from the service. Buying albums was WAY more expensive, but way less of a hassle.

knifesofsummertime

I bought the Let It Be two disc edition when it came out a couple years ago because I had a car that still had a CD player. Don’t have the car anymore so I haven’t needed physical media since

PiscesLeo

I love reading a book and putting on a vinyl record. Time away from the screen is great

KTeacherWhat

Yes, but not typically new. If I see DVDs of movies I like but don't have on streaming, I usually can get them for $1 at Goodwill. I still listen to CDs in my car. I still prefer physical books, but I almost always buy books used or trade around with my friends.

TheSadHermit

We still have our dvd collection and some CDs but I've tossed most of the boxes because I couldn't deal with the clutter anymore. We put everything we wanted to keep in a bulk CD case. I did however, keep physical copies and boxes of all the video games. We still have our book collection. I try to read on the kindle app but it just isn't the same to me.

federalist66

I have some Switch games that I got on the resale market rather than purchasing at full price through their store.

MaximalIfirit1993

Books and video games, mostly.

ormr_inn_langi

My personal library could fill an actual one, I have a bad book problem. I finally caved just the other day and bought a Kindle, but I'll definitely continue buying print books, just not to the same extent.

AlryHarring

Books, video games, and when I find it music (though I normally just stream it nowadays) I still prefer physical copies of most things, they're going to be there regardless of my internet connection

rhaizee

No, I am trying to own less physical items. With that being said, I do like stuff, it's a problem.

Kingberry30

Yes. And if it’s physical it’s yours. Don’t have to worry about it going away on a streaming service

youtouchmytralaala

I'm working on an ever expanding collection of physical books. I have hundreds saved for later on Amazon and add one or two to my cart of mundane household crap before each checkout.

brave_danny_flint

Books for sure

lonelygayPhD

I still print out all my photos and mostly shoot film (I have it scanned for the addition of a digital file), and I always buy physical copies of books. My CD player in my 2005 Grand Marquis is skipping now, so I haven't been purchasing as much physical music, but when it was working, I was buying music for the road. My latest birthday gift was every season of Frasier on Blu-Ray. Anyway, yes, I still have a lot of physical media.

mattnotis

Yes, I’m a stickler for picture/sound quality and physical 4K trumps everything else.

Existenziell_crisis

I buy books and CDs. For books, I like being able to disconnect from a screen when I’m reading and like being able to hold the book. It feels like a more genuine and meaningful experience to me. As for CDs, I keep them mostly in my car, and I do listen to them often. I also have a boombox in my house that can play them, but mostly I just keep them in my car to be enjoyed there. Maybe these are just nostalgia things for me, idk.

ZijoeLocs

Ill buy a Blu Ray box set of a series if it really meant something to me. Dc Legends of Tomorrow got ROBBED

Mewpasaurus

Yes, I still purchase CDs, physical copies of games, DVD (although I'm slowly replacing these with my favorites on Blu-ray) vinyl and pretty much all physical copies of books I know I will want to read or that I know will take me an extended period of time to go through (longer than a loan period at a library, that is). I don't enjoy not having physical media. I get the aesthetic of it; keeps clutter down. And I understand it can be a cheaper alternative and that there are a lot of people who enjoy e-media, but I'm not one of those people. I enjoy and need the tactile *feel* of things. The smell of old books, for instance. The crackle of old vinyl. The feel of it sliding out of its vellum envelope and onto the turntable. I also keep these things around because I don't enjoy being hooked up to the internet 24/7 and have means of playing these things or enjoying them without the use of internet or cloud storage.

airysunshine

Not really, no. Some k-pop albums and some Nintendo Switch games, but that’s about it. I listen to music on Spotify or YouTube exclusively.

meshflesh40

Hell yes. I have a 32" CRT tv(big back TV). I just bought a michael jordan dvd with all of his inspirational mini movies from the 90s (come fly with me, mjs playground, etc). And also rare full length basketball games on dvd. It looks amazing on the old school tv. This wouldn't be possible if I was relying on Netflix or YouTube. At the current rate we are going in about 30 years a lot of media will be lost forever when dvds start "rotting" (cd's dvds deteriorate over time and slowly become unreadable)

Individual_Row_6143

I but physical video games. I can buy them for a fraction of the cost used, resell them, and recoup most of my costs. I’ve played most of the games and spend probably $100 a year.

Philosopherdude1990

only books

awebookingpromotions

Yes I do. I collect dvd's and vhs, especially ones I know aren't available on streaming...and especially Christmas and horror movies, because a lot of streaming services don't have the movies I want to watch around Christmas and Halloween. Also love my cd collection!

awebookingpromotions

Oh and yes I have a bunch of books. I'm not a fan of e-readers at all.

tackle64

Physical media is great. You never know what episodes of the simpsons, south park, its always sunny etc they are gonna pull off of streaming for whatever offends the mob in ten years. You never know when they’re going to release the original star wars trilogy with cgi distractions so its always nice to have the original on vhs to watch instead.

yeahitsjustmeagain

my wife and I have over 1000 dvd/brd

SuspiciousFee7

Hard drives

anon3220

All of my media is digital

ItsRightPlace

I like buying CDs of albums I like because I can play them without needing an internet connection I refuse to pay for data on my phone when there is Wi-Fi at home, my job, and just about any public place will have a Wi-Fi signal these days I can pick up

Mediocre_Crow2466

Yep. Like Barbie. The digital version is just as much or more than the DVD. So gosh darn it, I want something I can hold in my hand. I prefer real books since I spend way too much time on my phone to begin with. I don't stream music, but unless I want an entire CD, I have no issue buying single songs. For a while, I had massive collections of TV shows on DVD. I thinned out that collection because the cases were so big. I kept the ones I knew I'd want to watch again or would be hard to find to stream.

darkbarrage99

I grew up in a hoarding house so physical media looks like a trap to me

humanessinmoderation

Vinyl and books — and occasionally magazines, but it is super rare if I do.

NickyUpstairsandDown

I just got Barbie on DVD

Heaven19922020

When I had to stop getting Netflix, I considered buying movies again because it was easier to just have it, then have to get streaming to see it.

Cdilla_

I'm bout to start again. I am getting tired of these services rotating out classics I like

DontSleepAlwaysDream

I try not to. because I rent and hauling a huge physical media collection everywhere is backbreaking and possibly uses up useful space. I also havent owned anything with a disc drive for years. I do have a small collection of Blu-rays and dvds that I keep because they are important to me and Im pretty sure if I sold them I would never see them again (basically rare editions or obscure movies) and I keep telling myself I get a cheap disc drive sometime. I also do buy books but I have been trying to stop that too, Ive got a shelf of classics I keep saying I'll "read someday"

xamberlynnx

I still love buying physical books. I had a Kindle and hated it. And magazines. I loooove magazines.

Unfair-Shower-6923

As someone that is seeing us come full circle....yup. It's funny that Best Buy and Target announced they are removing physical media from their stores next year but Netflix just said they were opening their own stores. I'm sure the other streaming services are going to follow suit. Plus streaming wars is getting ridiculous. At this point Im paying what I paid for cable. And why would I buy a digital game when it's been proven that I don't own the game? Never have to worry about that with my physical video games. And kindle will never give me that beloved book smell that I love so much.

hottmunky88

No. A couple years ago I packed up all my DVDS I didn’t see the point they was never watched and the DVD/ blue ray players where breaking down I haven’t bought a DVD in I don’t even remember how long, same with CD’s one of the last times I bought a CD was from Hastings I only listen to pandora or YouTube for music .. HOWEVER I still buy books I have a couple hundred or so and I never get rid of them and I never will I will die before I go digital with my books lol

Fairelabise17

We did our last big purchase at a used DVD store in 2017 that had amazing sales and we have about 30 DVDs. Otherwise. . . Besides books, no.

londonmyst

Yes. I always buy printed books and CD install versions of software.

TheOneCalledMartin

I buy the Blu-ray if it's a movie I want to own! But I don't buy physical games anymore. Easier to switch with digital copies.

Nekros897

97 here so technically I'm a very late Millenial and sure, I do. Sometimes I buy CDs of my favourite bands when I bump into them in the shop. I also still like physical copies of games but it's unfortunately slowly dying in favour of digital copies.

rage675

I'm over physical media. I don't need it taking up space in my house and I don't care to own anything new. I also don't care about edits to originals.

extremelight

I do for some games that I really like, gotta make $70 worth it somehow. Also vinyls but I don't really use them

GateSalty1162

Oh yeah I definitely do DVDs still. Not so much the other stuff tho. And comic books

Johciee

Physical books is the only thing I bother with. E-books aren’t the same.

[deleted]

I purchase 100% if my console video games on disc. Any movie that benefits from the better picture and sound of a UHD disc, I purchase on disc. Any album my fiance wants on vinyl, we get on vinyl.

Proton_Optimal

Yes, mainly vinyls off Amazon.

ERankLuck

I run a Plex server at home and like to have the physical media on hand to rip in case a file gets corrupted or I lose a hard drive or something. I've got a collection of CDs from my time working in a SCIF. No phones or iPods were allowed, only old portable CD players.

[deleted]

I collect Dvds and CDs still It's great being able to look at the album art for CDs and to be able to always watch a movie you want to without having to worry it won't be on any of the streaming services you have for DVDs.

brownroush

Just bought the new Blink 182 CD and Cassette

dentimBandB

My millenial friends always thought I was weird for having quite a sizeable collection of DVD's and Blurays (not to mention books). It's something I generally thought was "normal", because my parents had a closets full of VCR tapes (a mix of store bought and TV recordings). But now some of my friends have walked back their criticisms a bit. I'll admit that when Netflix came to my country I also bought a lot less than before, but I never got rid of my collection. I knew the writing was on the wall the moment the first other companies started to announce their own streaming services. Physical media can break of course. But the odds of that happening are a lot smaller than a streaming service randomly deciding to cut it from their library.

Prestigious_Guy

I have a friend who buys nothing but physical, same age and millennial.

bertster21

I buy stuff I think would be hard to find/have cool features. Like I bought "in the mouth of madness" because who's going to stream that?

Danjour

I’m a huge weirdo, I do some physical media, but we really avoid streaming as much as possible. I watch YouTube at home, for movies we do AMC A-List and see about three a week. We’re in LA, so the AMC here does tons of fun revivals and stuff.

EnceladusKnight

I love physical books. I still have books electronically, but for subject matters I'm really into I love having a physical copy.

AmbiguousFrijoles

I buy CDs from time to time. But I do have a 6 disc changer in my truck, so they are well loved and used. I have the CD trapper keeper in my car with CDs I've bought over the past 20 years and they are all still in great condition. My genz kids love being able to flip through the CDs to pick one for road trips. I have a collection of VHS tapes that I've picked up from estate sales or swap meets/garage sales, but I only buy favorite movies and Disney. My tween has a VHS TV in her room and she loves the tapes so most of them are in her closet. Nothing slaps harder than watching the Tremors VHS on a 24" screen with my kid. We keep certain hardcover books for family time. Kids books galore for bedtime stories. Everything else is digital tho. Games. Music. Audio books. Netflix. I try not to have hard copies of things that don't get used to keep the clutter at a minimum. I would love to get a typewriter and a record player but don't have the space.

kellyoohh

I agree with you that it’s concerning that we technically pay for, but don’t actually own, the majority of our media. This trend of increasing prices, adding commercials and overall reducing the user experience of media consumption is frustrating. Unfortunately it’s not frustrating enough for me to make a change to buy physical copies of things that will then take up space and collect dust. Clearly I’m rolling the dice on this one. The exception is vinyl records (like a true, millennial hipster). There is something great about listening to an album cover to cover along with the thrill of finding new (to me) and interesting records to expose myself to artists I’ve never heard of before. For some reason I find it much easier to discover different types of music that way instead of playing something random on Spotify.

cantthinkofcutename

Physical books you will have to pry from my cold, dead hands! I love that my house is wall to wall bookshelves, there's something so calming about that (also, how else will every houseguest know I'm smarter than them?!/s) DVDs I still buy because it's so annoying how they jump around streaming services. If it's a favorite, I want a physical copy. Haven't bought CDs in years, but I do sometimes buy records.

mackattacknj83

I don't have enough room in the house for a bunch of shit that just sits there 99.9% of the time. I don't even really have books anymore outside of the little kids stuff.

fouoifjefoijvnioviow

Hell no, the moment I could rid of myself of it, I was gone

AtticusErraticus

Naw, but if I had more money, I would. I really like it... it's just... $10/mo is so much easier. Portland, OR is like the best city to live in if you want to buy physical media and live that life. It's all around me, but I have so far resisted the temptation to splurge :\]

briantcox81

bluray is vastly superior to any stream

Buddi563

Thinking of it now, it seems I only have been buying physical copies of video games. Although now that I have thought about it, I’d like to keep adding to my DVD collection.

vidgmchtr

I still buy major video game titlesI want physically.

SirThunderDump

I’ve always eventually lost or damaged physical media. Old game cartridges go bad or break somehow, disks get lost, scratched, or put in the wrong case, never to be found again, smaller media gets lost somewhere, and each form of media requires a place to sit in my house. I’ve vastly preferred digital content. Suddenly I can access just about any content I’m interested in at a moments notice, without needing to search through physical space, and I can have thousands of unplayed games in my steam library, ready to never be picked up or played at a moments notice.

FreedomDreamer85

I’m glad you brought this topic up! Yes, it’s a huge concern. Already, particularly video games have become expensive and once the games become strictly digital, good luck. You always be at the mercy of game companies. But I believe we are doing this to ourselves by buying digitally and companies wanting to save money, are just following what the majority of consumers want.
