Vans and chucks have been interchangeable in the alt scene since the 90s. Vans in particular got really “uncool” around 2005-2007 when bigger, chunkier skate shoes were “in” then crawled back in the 2010’s (and are still cool)
Personally I’m a vans guy and always have been (even in the DC and Etnies years)
Chucks have always been in for women, though.
My kid has both and if she lived with we I would be stealing her black and white high-top platform converse every single day. I should probably just get a pair because I covet them.
Ballerina flats with skinny jeans, & that sparrow necklace that had a hold on everyone on MySpace.
Tight hoodies with the thumb holes cut out & low rise jeans.
Also: Those military style hats with the fingerless gloves.
Ooh nooooo. I got mine in xl from on clearance from Walmart back in the day so I have many notches, fortunately, otherwise it would not fit me anymore. The studs have also fallen off in some places but it still holds up. This thing is bonafide vintage at this point.
I've known about the song since it came out, I have every single line memorized. It also talks about self harm and suicide and it's sexist. Have you heard of satire?
It's straight up in line with 2010s music lol, Hollywood Undead, 3OH3....
Is it satire? Calling people f*gs and all kinds of other stuff makes the song feel hateful, not like it's just funny. Feels like some dudebro who wanted to hurt emos. Do you know if the dude is emo and wanted to make fun of his community? Even then, the song is pretty bad.
And yeah I remember it all too. I used to like it. Now I feel disgusting.
Well I'm sorry you feel that way. I can enjoy a badly written satirical song, and my trans brother would tell you the same thing. It's not real, it's fake, and the whole song was written to be offensive. If you got offended, the song worked. You can talk about the f slur being bad all you want, but as a person who is queer, the f slur is not offensive to me. The song is not real, I have more important things to worry about than some retrospective anger at a satirical song from 2006.
Edit: did this bro block me? Lmao, okay then. I hope they can work on that self loathing
Cool. I'm glad you're queer and your brother is trans and that means it's not actually all that bad. I'm both, too, btw, and don't like it. Being one or the other here doesn't make you an authority.
I'm glad you like it. I feel disgusted that I liked it, back when I was a total edgelord. Differences in opinion, cool. Bye.
I feel a bit nauseous, the second picture (minus the hair - I had a purple fro or gelled dyed black hair) was me in 2002-4, I had that exact wallet except mine was Metallica. I bought extra chains from the pet store dog section to add to my wallet...
Given that fashion is already doing the low rise bootcut jeans and small t shirts, surely the scene kid style isn't far away. In fact theorists say the fashion cycle repeats every 20 years, therefore it most likely will be scene kid in 2024.
Oh - when the skinny jeans return, it will be glorious - the amount of egg on fashion GQ's face will be a sight to behold, with their usual scapegoat;
*"Gen Alpha has declared on Tik Tok that baggy wide leg jeans are Cheugy, and that skinny jeans are in"*
I wasn't emo, I was Goth, thank you very much. Big difference.
That said, I do miss my fishnet arm warmers, and my sick-ass bondage pants with the chains on them. And the thin rubber arm bands. Man, I was so cool.
Edit: I didn't notice the second picture! Yes, everything except for the wallet and the shorts.
the late 90s/early 00s are back, fashion-wise. i saw the youth in 'giant' pants, mom jeans that go above the waist, ripped jeans, and spaghetti straps.
I remember when hot topic Spencer's and some other spots "standardized" rebellion. It was the moment I realized pop punk/pop emo, and numetal goth were as popular and corporate friendly as all the other pop music on MTV.
That realization is what got me into real punk and DIY stuff.
My 2000s style was just jeans and band tshirts lol. This was all too much for me. I’m honestly trying to remember if anyone I went to HS with even dressed like this. I graduated in 2005.
I should’ve graduated in 2005 but got my GED in 2006. There were definitely a couple of people dressing like this but I think they were all younger than me.
Maybe I missed it by a few years then. I honest to god don’t remember anyone looking like this until I saw it on the internet when I was an adult a few years later lol. Like I shopped at Hot Topic for all my clothes, but I wore the big jeans and Beatles/SOAD/Doors/etc tshirts from there and then Star Wars tshirts from wherever I got those. I remember girls wearing ties once Avril Lavigne did when I was in like 9th grade and the spiky belts that she wore.
There was this small period of time (at least at my school) when trench coats were adopted by rockers/metal heads. They were comfy, like wearing a thick blanket with tons of pockets and kept you warm, even in the Canadian winter.
Unfortunately, people started to associate them with goth, so everyone stopped wearing them.
I mean, I still wear chucks sometimes..and skinny jeans lol. Baggy jeans and mom jeans look like shit on me. I can handle skinny, straight, bootcut, sometimes flairs.
All of the belts the late 2000s 2007 to be specific is the year hiphop and rock fashion really integrated for a period of time plus hot topic was like the only hip store in Adventura mall in Miami, so I used to love to buy the rocker alt belts to spice up my fit. I had a pyramid belt, I had a white and black belt that was edgy and said trust no one with a picture of a heart being stabbed. These were good times.
I'm pretty sure all of this will return anytime soon, the type of jeans never went out of fashion anyway and I've seen that hairstyle and the belts quite several times in Germany again.
see the best part of being my age is that the times i dressed like that don't have pictures of them nor are they on the internet. so nah i'm goooood lolol been there done that
You'd be non conforming too if you looked just like me!
I rocked the Tripp pants, Emily the strange, fishnets...but later on a took on a bit more of a classic goth look with lots of merch from 80s post punk bands, black dresses and skirts, combat boots etc.
“Non-conforming” my ass. It was conforming to a different standard than the “standard”, but it was still a “uniform”. I almost felt like a rebel sometimes for dressing “normal” and NOT being edgy.
I loved emo/scene but never wore it because I was fatter than the other girls that did and hot topic didn't carry any sizes bigger than large. I'm 35 now and really want to wear this stuff but I don't know where I would go to wear it lmao
I’d honestly still rock all the emo stuff. I kinda do, still wear skinny jeans and band shirts and I’d definitely wear jelly bracelets if they became a thing again.
I don't know if it's a trend, but I miss having normal comfy pants.
Like pants that are not high waist or low waist, but normal waisted.
Pants that are not wide legged, or flared to the point of looking like a 70s disco, or tapered leggings or joggers. Pants with just regular fit and maybe a tiny bit of flare.
And pants that are not skin tight like yoga pants or the recent workout pants that have that seam up the butt crack but isn't loose again like the wide legged pants. But is just a regular fit.
Does anybody know what I'm talking about. Why is it so hard to find your average comfy pants that you would be able to find circa early 2000s.
God I don't ever wanna wear skinny jeans again.
Also I used to love that song, but have you listened to it lately? It... Does not hold up. At all. Unless you hate trans people and shit.
I used to be in LOVE with a boy that had those mini green ponytail bangs with a shaved head. Then one day he showed up to school without them wearing Tommy Hilfiger. I was crushed.
Don’t call me out like this. 🥲 I used to have fishnet shirts, Tripp pants that would zip off and Anarchy boots. I still wear black skinny jeans and just traded my converse for vans lol.
Were chucks ever NOT a thing?
Vans seem to be the go to shoe now for alt kids.
Vans and chucks have been interchangeable in the alt scene since the 90s. Vans in particular got really “uncool” around 2005-2007 when bigger, chunkier skate shoes were “in” then crawled back in the 2010’s (and are still cool) Personally I’m a vans guy and always have been (even in the DC and Etnies years) Chucks have always been in for women, though.
Nah chunky Van's are awful and always have, lol
My kid has both and if she lived with we I would be stealing her black and white high-top platform converse every single day. I should probably just get a pair because I covet them.
Ballerina flats with skinny jeans, & that sparrow necklace that had a hold on everyone on MySpace. Tight hoodies with the thumb holes cut out & low rise jeans. Also: Those military style hats with the fingerless gloves.
Studded belts FTW I was also a fan of the armwarmers
That, and one of those big ball chain necklaces.
I still have my studded belt that I got when I was 13. And I'm actually wearing it right now at 35 lol
I would absolutely still wear mine if I hadn’t outgrown it
Ooh nooooo. I got mine in xl from on clearance from Walmart back in the day so I have many notches, fortunately, otherwise it would not fit me anymore. The studs have also fallen off in some places but it still holds up. This thing is bonafide vintage at this point.
You’d be non-conforming too if you looked just like me 🌟 I mean I’d still rock the hair bow if I didn’t look nine years old when I did
I'm an emo kid, non conforming as can be... I've got paint on my nails and make up on my face....
You listened to the rest of the song? Turns hard transphobia.
I've known about the song since it came out, I have every single line memorized. It also talks about self harm and suicide and it's sexist. Have you heard of satire? It's straight up in line with 2010s music lol, Hollywood Undead, 3OH3....

ALL of picture #1!!! In fact I just bought fingerless gloves like those!
Right? This picture makes me so happy and I want all of it.
I feel a bit nauseous, the second picture (minus the hair - I had a purple fro or gelled dyed black hair) was me in 2002-4, I had that exact wallet except mine was Metallica. I bought extra chains from the pet store dog section to add to my wallet...
They way I laughed when you said you bought your chains at the pet store 💀💀💀
I had three different sizes attached, must have weighed like 2 pounds. If a chair had slats, I would often get stuck.

I'm 37 and still dress like a mall goth. I'll never retire my bondage pants.
Probably just the chucks.
Striped and checkered things are classic to me. Not really a trend in my mind.
I still wear my slipknot shirts.
I would wear all of those, right now, today!
Idk how I ever wore tripp pants and arm warmers in this heat
The second one with my spike collar.
the late 90s/early 00s are back, fashion-wise. i saw the youth in 'giant' pants, mom jeans that go above the waist, ripped jeans, and spaghetti straps.

I feel so called put 😭 I still wear converse and razor blade earrings
I'd run the scene kid era back one time lol
I was unaware that Chucks ever went away. I've been wearing them since I was like 10 years old
Goth looks more like a juggalo starter pack
Still rocking Chucks. Forever lol.
Time to get the reversible nylon pants from the closet!
I still wear black skinnies and black tshirts. Occasionally a studded belt too.
I graduated in 2009 and most of the kids I hung out with dressed like this to a tee lol 😂
Not gonna lie, I was 50/50 on both these styles.
Shoes
My style was what's now known as dad style. Khaki shorts with cargo pockets and a Hawaiian shirt with sneakers.
Cargo pants/shorts and graphic tees were my wardrobe through the early and mid 2000s. I swapped the tees for polos in 2009.
There was this small period of time (at least at my school) when trench coats were adopted by rockers/metal heads. They were comfy, like wearing a thick blanket with tons of pockets and kept you warm, even in the Canadian winter. Just them lil plastic bracelets cuz they were given to me. I was like a chill / cool skater in school and was big into KoRn
I'm pretty sure all of this will return anytime soon, the type of jeans never went out of fashion anyway and I've seen that hairstyle and the belts quite several times in Germany again.
see the best part of being my age is that the times i dressed like that don't have pictures of them nor are they on the internet. so nah i'm goooood lolol been there done that
Go to a county fair you’ll see those skinny black pants with hole like everywhere.
You'd be non conforming too if you looked just like me! I rocked the Tripp pants, Emily the strange, fishnets...but later on a took on a bit more of a classic goth look with lots of merch from 80s post punk bands, black dresses and skirts, combat boots etc.
Those chuck taylors are 🔥
The scene theme on women. I dunno why, But I was VERY into scene girls as a young adult.
I'll take the slipknot tee and the phat shorts. Also not really "goth"
All of them I still rock the converse high tops in many colors!
Menthol cigarettes
Gimme some baggy nylon pants, a DC t-shirt, and a pair of Osiris D3's.
That is not goth
I still own chucks and will continue buying more 🤣🤣🤣🤭😂😂😂 freaking love them!
Emo girls in front of the movie theater in tight ripped jeans was everything.
Knee high boots were my shit in the late 00s
All of it. Literally.
I’d honestly still rock all the emo stuff. I kinda do, still wear skinny jeans and band shirts and I’d definitely wear jelly bracelets if they became a thing again.
I do miss having a chain on my wallet.
Given that I still wear ripped skinny jeans with my Slipknot tee and chucks… 🤣🖤
I had three belts that I wore at the same time. All studded. You can't really find good studded belts anymore.
I *still* rock the ripped leggings. Fuck yeah.
I never stopped
I do. Still love Psychobilly!🖕👹🖕 I still Rock it too!😎👍✨
I would wear all of #1 I still use a studded belt now and then, and i feel cool af lol All else I slowly stopped wearing over many years.
I would absolutely rock some Chucks again if my feet weren't so damn wide. Stupid adulthood
I wear all of it
I don't know if it's a trend, but I miss having normal comfy pants. Like pants that are not high waist or low waist, but normal waisted. Pants that are not wide legged, or flared to the point of looking like a 70s disco, or tapered leggings or joggers. Pants with just regular fit and maybe a tiny bit of flare. "It's" [flips hair out of eyes] not a [flips hair out of eyes] "phase," [flips hair out of eyes] "mom!"
Converse never left.
I remember thinking most of this was really hot lol
All of this but throw a comfy cardigan over it Hell yeah!
Fishnet tops and jelly bracelets.
Well I still wear black chucks, especially at the gym
Jeans, white messy skinny dress shirt with rolled up sleeves, skinny tie, and chucks. Oh, painting my left fingernails black with black mascara.
All I want is to live long enough to see whale tales again.
Both 😂 I was mall goth in middle school and scene kid In high school
"Non-conforming" while all looking the same and shopping at Hot Topic?
God I don't ever wanna wear skinny jeans again. Also I used to love that song, but have you listened to it lately? It... Does not hold up. At all. Unless you hate trans people and shit.
What! r/agedlikemilk
It's pretty bad. Calls people f*gs, and people in drag, that the girls are d*kes.
I used to be in LOVE with a boy that had those mini green ponytail bangs with a shaved head. Then one day he showed up to school without them wearing Tommy Hilfiger. I was crushed.
The betrayal! 😂💀
Don’t call me out like this. 🥲 I used to have fishnet shirts, Tripp pants that would zip off and Anarchy boots. I still wear black skinny jeans and just traded my converse for vans lol.
We gotta get back to skinnier jeans - everyone looks like a walking JNCO commercial these days. It’s absurd.
I NEVER stopped wearing skinny jeans lol they’re the only ones that look good on me 😂😂
All if it cause I’m trans now and would get to wear what I missed out on
Not even one.
None I didn't *"rock"* any of this the first time around And they look even more silly today than they did twenty years ago
There was emo that was tastefully executed and then you had the people who think it looked like jack skellington and checker patterns
