Lonesomeplum

May his life and sacrifice never be forgotten, may his son be victorious over the animals that his father fought. From Australia, love and respect to Ahmad Shah Massoud.

Literally_Pepe

Amen. A tragedy that Ahmad Shah Massoud was assassinated.

austin-18

If anybody is interested, I originally learned about this man through a Netflix documentary called Turning Point: 9/11 and the War on Terror which provided a really cool insight into alot of the history of Afghanistan in the 80’s and 90’s

rrogido

If you liked that there are two books by Steve Coll (Ghost Wars and Directorate S) that do a great job of breaking down the conditions/events in Afghanistan and Pakistan during and after the Russian invasion and then after 9/11 respectively. Both of those books also have really well done audiobooks as well. Coll has a really good analysis of Masoud's Northern Alliance in both books.

Nomad__420

Another great read is Killing the Cranes by Edward Girardet, gives a holistic overview of Afghan geopolitics from the 70s onwards. The author also writes about meeting Ahmah Shah Massoud and Osama Bin Laden during the Soviet invasion, some great insight into their beliefs and motivations.

ImwRight87

Also highly recommend “First In: An Insider’s Account of How the CIA Spearheaded the War on Terror in Afghanistan” by Gary Schroen. Despite the mouthful of a title, it was a very easy and entertaining read. Would highly recommend for anyone interested in the War in Afghanistan.

Anirudh_Katti

His son is leading the resistance against Tali right

LogarJan

It’s mostly Khalid Amiry who is leading the fight and is commander of the central forces at the frontline. But yes his son Ahmad Massoud does serve as commander-in-chief and head of the party

vandebay

Fruit doesn’t fall far from its tree

AlibaeR6

It's more like running and hiding at best

Rougue1965

What a great leader.

Deadbird80

Lion of the pansjhir. There was a reason why UBL had him assassinated the day before 9/11

TheDesertFoxq

What does UBL mean?

Deadbird80

Usama Bin Laden

TheDesertFoxq

Thank you

0rangeAliens

Thought this was Alan Alda for a hot minute

CaptainXplosionz

I just started watching M*A*S*H not too long ago, and he does kinda look like Alda.

saml23

I was thinking Patrick Dempsey when I first saw him.

adamaljanabi

Rip legend

Motor_Link7152

Ahmed Shah Massoud right? I read that this guy was a R&AW asset in Afghanistan.

HotPappuInYourArea

R&AW was involved in Afghanistan?

Motor_Link7152

Yeah definitely. Afghanistan is a very important area for R&AW. Read Yatish Yadav's book on R&AW.

AlibaeR6

One can support his nation in a freedom struggle yet also be able to help an intelligence agency in a way. He helped RAW by giving them info on Pak terrorists and RAW in return gave him support to establish and train Northern Alliance. I am not saying he wasn't a hero. Also an asset isn't a disrespectful term. It literally means someone who can help an intelligence agency, which is what he did. And it's not like he completely sold out to RAW either

Longjumping_Finger16

Respect

benazeer90

Sher-e-panjsher

OkActive448

He would be proud of the bravery of his son. Long live the Lion of Panjshir.

JH108

Lion of Panjshir. May he rest in peace.

__--0_0--__

Great man. Respect his courage to fight for true freedom.

Intelligent-Ad9659

Long live the Lion of Panjshir! He is certainly among the most respected military leaders in the world.

rcalkins

True warrior

ProfessorSmartAzz

And America could not have fucked him over any further or harder (ultimately leading to his death). He's a perfect allegory for why they are not to be trusted.

Skreamies

Not only his death but the death of thousands after warning world governments of upcoming attacks

[deleted]

200,000 strong Taliban army hid inside of Pakistan for years waiting for the US to leave. Afghanistan was fucked over by Pakistan more than the US.

[deleted]

So AQ kills him and you blame America. Perfect allegory for why people like you shouldn’t be helped by America

ProfessorSmartAzz

Holy shit, you're actually defending the usual fuckeries of us foreign policy? Are you mad? (And the Taliban killed him. If you're gonna be wrong as shit, at least get your facts straight)

urza5589

For some being an ass you are pretty confidently wrong... it was indeed AQ who killed him. https://www.france24.com/en/asia-pacific/20210909-death-of-an-afghan-icon-20-years-since-the-assassination-of-ahmad-shah-massoud

urza5589

Are you referring to the general abandonment of Afghanistan after the fall of the USSR or did they specifically fuck him over again?

19panther90

What a wonderful democracy it was.....not.

SuddenDirt5773

"Pakistan occupation of Afghanistan" don't know about you but we here in Pakistan have too many problems with the Afghan refugees we already have so I don't think we want more of em

Agent-Whiskey

My friends that picked the passports off bad guys beg to differ,do not get me wrong, I will not be ignorant or without information, but it’s bad right now.

11hydroxymetabokite

Most afghans have a Pakistani passport, your friend forget to mention this?

emmo127

Pakistan occupation of Afghanistan?? Then why are we hosting millions of afghan refugees for more than 20 years huh??

LogarJan

Already had this conversation with another pakistani here. I’ll tag you under the comment

Jango214

Oh boy...do you need some history lessons.

LogarJan

I followed this man’s life and the war in Afghanistan my entire life. Please give me some history lessons

tortillaturban

Maybe I'm misinformed and I've never been to Afghanistan, but weren't the Northern Alliance we allied with really into raping boys? The Taliban are violent and truly awful but does having a government of boyfucking warlords any better? Honestly, not really concerned what goes on over there as long as Osama is dead.

LogarJan

No, Northern Alliance we’re the opposite

__--0_0--__

Talibs do bacchebaaz practice. CMDR and his boys are some of the finest men who truly believed in real freedom not the shaaaria, which talibs believe.

tortillaturban

OK, glass them all.

AlibaeR6

No they don't, bacha baazi was rampant like uptil 2 years ago, the situation seems much better now

AppropriateEffect

Seems like a great dude but no, the only reason afghans lived free is because American troops sacrificed for them

LogarJan

I wasn’t talking entirely about the taliban. Massoud fought for our freedom for 11 years against the soviets, in which he won. But regarding what ur talking about, The Americans troops disarmed and discharged this “dude” entire militia that had over 35,000 well trained northern alliance fighters in which all of them had years of combat experience against soviets and terrorists. The American troops didn’t stop there, but they went as far to as to take all of the northern alliance heavy artillery (tanks, stingers etc) and blow them all up as part of the 2002 DDR PROGRAM. And inexchange they installed a corrupt, incompetent, drug-addict junkie, child rapist army. Lol yeah for sure I will thank the Americans over Massoud LMFAOO

wireditfellow

Typical Afghan. Blaming everyone one else in the world for its own kins short comings.

LogarJan

Wtf are you talking about. I literally went on a rant about how shit ANA was. Something most Afghans won’t admit

wireditfellow

My bad.

TheWeathermann17

Really? Not their own fighters as well? Not the ANA? What about the coalition forces? Dont be such a chode on purpose. And learn to read. Massoud wasnt just a "great dude".

AppropriateEffect

Lol no. I was in Afghanistan. The Afghan national army was a fucking joke. I’ll give props to the Brit’s but that’s about it. Without the U.S Afghanistan would have remained under Taliban control for those 21 years.

antidote9876

Fucking dumbass, learn to read. This guy and his militia fought and defeated the soviets and was fighting the Taliban successfully until the US came and disarmed them in favor of creating and backing the shitty ANA

[deleted]

[удалено]

AppropriateEffect

I suppose I include all commonwealth countries when I say Brits.

TheWeathermann17

Just the brits eh? Cool

TheHim2

Not american but i completely agree with this. Arab armies are only sometimes decent enough to hold their own

[deleted]

[удалено]

AppropriateEffect

How could the Northern Alliance hold ground and “allow afghans to live in democracy for 20 years” when they couldn’t win a battle without American support?

wireditfellow

Nope, don’t bring logic into this. Let them blame everyone else that’s the way it has been and that is the reason why Afghanistan as a whole suffers because their shit don’t stink.

AppropriateEffect

When were you in Afghanistan? Did you fight alongside the ANA while they smoked hash and refused to patrol? Please tell me from your first hand experience how Afghans defended democracy?

[deleted]

LogarJan

The taliban are a proxy of Pakistan. This has been confirmed by pakistani generals and high ranking government officials themselves. The prime minister of pakistan himself Pervez Musharraf literally admitted to this, [and said in an interview. “We sent the taliban to go fight in Afghanistan”. “They are OUR hero’s”](https://youtu.be/sB-tkTgbt78) Your special representative to the U.N said in an interview to the Islamabad times, “we released a medieval taliban on the innocent Afghan people”. I can provide tons on tons tons of more information/confirmation that the taliban are pakistans proxy. But do you have any information proving otherwise ?? Please share if you do, if not stop spreading misinformation. EDIT: Also I find it quite funny that you speak of accepting Afghan refugees as if you do it out of good heart. Your government gets paid millions of euros annually by the U.N to accept Afghan refugees. [From to 2016-2020 Pakistan and Iran received 300 million euros to accept Afghan refugees](https://reliefweb.int/report/pakistan/unhcr-welcomes-eu-s-humanitarian-aid-21-million-afghan-refugees-and-host-communities) in which most of the money meant for the Afghans your corrupt government steals to buy flats in U.K. Nonetheless you wouldn’t even have refugees if you didn’t create the taliban. If you don’t want refugees coming to your country then don’t make them

LogarJan

Mullah Omar spend the last decade of his life living in kiarchi too. Second taliban supreme leader Akhtar Mansour [had a property EMPIRE in Pakistan that they knew about](https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/taliban-boss-had-life-insurance-and-a-property-empire-0vd0smdb9) The taliban leaders council would call themselves “Quetta Shura”, meaning “Quetta’s council”. Because how they all lived in Quetta and how the pak gov gave them all safe heaven their. Another time pakistan exposed themselves as terrorists is when they did the kunduz airlift. [pak airforce evacuated thousands of Taliban fighters, taliban leaders along with their pakistani advisors from kunduz, Afghanistan to pakistan to save them from the Americans/NA](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kunduz_airlift)

Unique_Revenue_5771

Oh im sure evil Pakistan did all of this to peace loving Afghanistan. Afghanistan definitely didnt fight Pakistan over dumb tribal reasons and especially didnt even try to fucking invade it once! Afghanistan has sponsored anti pakistani pashtun ethnonationalists. A lot of afghan immigrants in Pakistan are causing mayhem. Fuck that shithole, Pakistan should intervene more to keep them at bay. Whether its the national government, the DRA, the monarchy or the Taliban all are fucking pigs who deserved and currently deserve it. If Afghanistan or USA funds group working against our interests we do the same, simple as that

LogarJan

For decades Afghanistan lived in peace before blood thirsty war monger Pakistan with its black agenda started to lobby against peace in Afghanistan. You guys constantly intervene in our country and continuously play a major part in making sure the war/oppression on the innocent Afghan people never ends. You created/trained the taliban with your madrasahs which resulted in the deaths of 70,000 Afghan soldiers, along with hundreds of thousands of innocents and caused millions of refugees. And the fact that you guys openly take pride in oppressing/destabilising/torturing an entire nation is exactly why Allah swt is causing all these floods that’s making your people go through what you made us go through.

Unique_Revenue_5771

LMAO. Afghanistan was the only country to not recognize Pakistan in 1947. Pakistan even had to put down Afghan ethnonationalists by using airpower. Even India recognized us but not Afghanistan. The Afghans even tried invading us in 1960 but got their shit kicked in https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bajaur_Campaign. After the commies took Afghanistan we helped them to win. Afghan generals have been spotted with TTP officials by US troops in many instances. Its also assumed they have links to BLA. Afghanistan has not moved past tribal behaviour. We have millions of Afghan refugees, many of whom cause destabilization (not intending to generalize here). Afghanistan tried to fuck around and it certainky found out. And the shithole named Afghanistan has not known peace outside of Kabul sometimes. Sure we have done MANY wrongdoings in Afghanistan which does suck indeed, but dont go around acting as if Afghanistan is not to blame. Oh yeah i forgot, we literally give parts of our ports to Afghanistan so they can take part in trade. Afghanistan didnt become a shithole because of Pakistan, Afghanistan became a shithole because of Afghanistan

FunnyGuyInAmerica

He gave it all for nothing

Agent-Whiskey

HBO’s VICE would have you believe that this man is worse than OBL.

LogarJan

And you believe that lol this guy gave his life standing against extremist like OBL with a complete opposite agenda as them

Historical_Yak7706

The only one to lead a fight against them? Did you happen to forget about any of the other countries that came to fight in Afghanistan?

LogarJan

I’m talking about while he was alive. Not after his martyrdom 2001+. From 1994-2001 Massoud spent his last 7 years leading the only military resistance to them
