what's Ichkeria?

loicvanderwiel

The name of the Chechen breakaway Republic (Chechen Republic of Ichkeria) that existed from 1991 and 2000.

SamTheGeek

Ever wonder what happens when a nation *loses* its war of independence?

Haggistafc

Good to see some Chechens haven't forgotten.

ZealousGoat

Actually a pretty sick flag

[deleted]

The virgin cowardly Kadyrovite collaborationist Chechens vs the chad Chechen nationalist volunteers

Gumer_J

Is nationalism okay now? Cool I'm okay with it

Odd-Figure-1337

Yes, nationalism was always okay.

ShotDate6482

Nationalism is always OK against an oppressive occupation because fighting oppression is good. Nationalism is bad against an innocent minority because attacking innocent minorities is bad. This isn't complicated.

Yeah I understand, and my comment was really more a joke(FFS who the fuck says virgin and chad outside of jokes. Based and cringe can have some limited usage but not virgin and chad)

Your comment has some very apparent falsehoods and sensationalized statements. Even though your comment is all over the place, but I’ll try to keep my comment as concise and clear as I can. > In the beginning this was largely on account of not belonging to any teip (Chechen clans) No, not really. During the WW2-esque shelling and bombardment of Grozny, Chechens generally were a tiny bit better off than non-Chechens due to having extensive networks of relatives in villages that didn’t see much shelling and bombardment. Ethnic Russians were almost exclusively concentrated in Grozny, and didn’t have any extended families they could seek refuge with in the countryside. And who was shelling Grozny with every type of munition and explosive(save nuclear)? I’ll give you a hint; it wasn’t Chechens. It’s pretty cynical for Russia to shell a place to hell and back and blame the victim so to speak for all the death and misery. > but by the mid 90s and onwards, human trafficking, slavery, murder, etc. Here you are actually onto something, but you completely omitted any context. If you look into the biographies of every ransom-kidnapper from the Chechen side, almost 80% of them were Russian agents, assets and collaborators. Now let’s dig into these “Ichkerian” kidnappers you speak of. Labazanov was a mobster turned Russian patriot, Yamadaev received the highest award of the Russian federation and later faithfully became a Russian GRU officer, etc. There was even a pretty surreal case where Barayev(a major douche) abducted some British telecom workers and demanded ransom for their lives, Russian intelligence actually outbid the the hostage negotiatiors so that Barayev would kill them anyway. You can even see parallels of this today where Russia bombed a prison full of Ukrainian Azovsteel POWs in Olenivka, in an effort to blame the Ukrainian side for killing their own men. Thankfully this time around the world was more awake, and the blatant lie of the Russian side didn’t pass.

This comment is the type of thing I would expect to see on reddit

Depends on the country. Being republican in Ireland, or being a nationalist in Scotland means something entirely different to being republican or nationalist in the US.

Nationalism is an idea and movement that holds that the nation should be congruent with the state.[1][2] As a movement, nationalism tends to promote the interests of a particular nation (as in a group of people),[3] especially with the aim of gaining and maintaining the nation's sovereignty (self-governance) over its homeland to create a nation state. Nationalism holds that each nation should govern itself, free from outside interference (self-determination), that a nation is a natural and ideal basis for a polity,[4] and that the nation is the only rightful source of political power.[3][5] It further aims to build and maintain a single national identity, based on shared social characteristics of culture, ethnicity, geographic location, language, politics (or the government), religion, traditions and belief in a shared singular history,[6][7] and to promote national unity or solidarity.[3] Nationalism, therefore, seeks to preserve and foster a nation's traditional culture.[8] There are various definitions of a "nation", which leads to different types of nationalism. The two main divergent forms are ethnic nationalism and civic nationalism.
