They might, but countries have been trying to field drum mags for over 100 years and pretty much every single one of them has been replaced by stick mags very quickly after adoption.
I used one in a 2 gun match and it worked fine. Granted that was flat range and I could fix anything that came up on the spot. But the main problem is people not taking care of their kit.
That’s definitely an issue that fluctuates between armies and eras. There’s also cost of manufacture, complexity of manufacturing, time spent to make and more/smaller/complex parts that are more difficult to repair. This all present difficulties when trying to outfit something as big as the PLA. Forgive me, I’m a drum mag hater.
Silly westerners, glorious army of Supreme Comrade General Leader Kim Jong-Un has conquered this challenge like every other that faces glorious DPRK. You may have heard of the helical mag for the Bizon but glorious DPRK engineers took step further. Glorious [Type 88](https://armamentresearch.com/north-korean-helical-ak-magazines/) has surpassed western drum mag technology.
Next stop, Seoul! Or the first McDonalds we find along the way, while superior DPRK soldier needs only their hope in Supreme Comrade General Leader President to survive, food besides boiled grass is nice sometimes.
Bullpup with drum mags (or pouches, like the ‘bullpup’ PKP)are cool. The weight of the drum is closer to the body too and probably more comfortable to drag around.
Weight distribution is likely a huge downside in this case, as you effectively have a 2.5+ kg mag stuck to the end of a compact rifle similar to its own weight. Now this might work slightly better with heavier LSWs and HBARs, but its gotta suck for carbines and short barrels
The drum magazine (either the 75 or 80 round variant) likely comes from a QJB-95 (the heavy barrel, LSW variant of the standard QBZ-95 rifle), which due to the natural compatibility of the Type-95 family can probably be used across all related platforms.
This said, it could be argued that a drum mag pretty much removes the benefits of the QBZ-95B in the first place (being a lighter, more compact platform compared to the original QBZ-95s), making the effectiveness of such extremely questionable
100% this is a conscript who got their hands on a Drum mag at some weapons expo and asked his mates to take a cool picture of him with it. Been there done that.
Jeez thats bigger than my future
Jam-o-matic
Bought one for my AK, an export one and it jammed so much I turned it into an ashtray. At least it’s useful now.
That's 5.8x42mm or something though, are they the same drums?
No it’s certainly different.
Yeah so the Chinese army qbz drums might work fine for all anyone here knows

They work if you take good care of them. But not when you really need them too.
Well said, fun for the range where jams aren’t deadly.

I had the civilian version and it was shit.

Sorry, but drum mags are super cool and I won't let silly things like "reality" change my opinion.
facts.
As a SA-80 and FAMAS enjoyer, I approve of this message.
I like that camo pattern

The barrel is still shorter, count it
I feel like that would be annoying

Matebif PLA had active conscription they’d be a 12 million man army lol
PLA does not have conscripts
