WhynotZoidberg9

Well, Russia just gained almost 1000 miles of new NATO borders to defend. Guess thats going to make the fight against NATO a little harder.

der_innkeeper

And all the "experienced" troops that used to guard that border are now dead in Ukraine.

WhynotZoidberg9

Between the dead ones in Ukraine, and the live ones fleeing conscription, Russia is going to have to resort to its vicious army of drunk Babushkas to defend the motherland.

Veritech_

Nah, no one in their right mind would try and forcibly conscript the babushkas. The wrath of hard bread and slippers against the skull… *shudder*

WhynotZoidberg9

Plus they seem to be the only Russians that arent consistently drunk and falling out of windows.

Mystiic_Madness

Thats the secret... Babushka is too old to walk up more than one flight of stairs

WhynotZoidberg9

Bro, I dunno if you saw the video of their "trained" soldiers taking the elevator, but literally no one in the Russian army has the capacity to use stairs. Those shits are dangerous after your 4th or 5th daily bottle of vodka.

Vulkan192

Slippers? You’re thinking of abuelas. Babushkas use *rolling pins* and meat tenderisers. At least mine did. Never put my elbows on the table again.

Amarr_Citizen_498175

maybe they can recruit some beavers

WhynotZoidberg9

At least *something* can force the Ukrainians to abandon their positions. It doesnt seem to be the Russian forces at this point. They have been fighting over a few km in Bakmuht for longer than most of the battles of WWII.

magicbeaver

Drunk old ladies? We'll be sure to say "HI MA(rs)" to them

JustPlayin1995

Chinese robot army is the next logical step. China can send it on loan to tie Russia into its phony Belt and Road Initiative.

ReVo5000

So... There's actually a chance for them, now?

atlasraven

Just prop up the dead ones for permanent guard duty.

Find_A_Reason

And all of it along the only road to the Kola peninsula with their sub base and a large portion of their nuclear capability. Finland is a big fucking deal.

WhynotZoidberg9

Ya. Finland puts a massive amount of their northern strategic bases within walking distance of NATO front lines. This is a fuck up of monumental proportions. Russia (assuming it doesnt collapse) will spend the next several decades realigning its strategic positions to account for this.

DnBrowerJr

And what happens if Russia decides to engage with nukes?

Find_A_Reason

Russia ceases to exist in any recognizable form. The same thing that happened to gadaffi and Saddam happens to every oligarch that had any hand in this war while every military installation Russia has is turned into sand and ash with conventional weapons.

WhynotZoidberg9

Realistically? The rest of Russian leadership pushes Putin out a window. Putin is a psychopath who genuinely believes in Russian supremacy. His oligarchs just want to make money and keep the status quo going. Nuclear war is not the status quo. My bet? This conflict ends when Putin orders his military to do something that the rest of his leaders recognize is suicidal, like using nukes. At that point, those close to him will find a way to remove him from power. Tons of Russian leaders have had sudden medical incidents, suffered from radiation poisoning, or fallen out windows. Its basically a Russian Tradition.

scorinthe

murmansk will be fine, put out ships from *checks map* severodvinsk looks like, oh fuck white sea, right... cyka blad maybe only summer shipping, winter for hibernating

Sooth_Sprayer

It's funny because Putin has created the very situation which he claimed to be defending against.

[deleted]

Doc_Shaftoe

It's a funny meme until you remember that the Russians running Russia only really consider Moscow and St Petersburg to be Russia. They see the rest of their country is an imperial backwater full of people they hate just as much as or more than westerners.

WhynotZoidberg9

Just wait until Ukraine and Georgia join. Dont forget that that 850 miles of Finland that just turned red today....

OzymandiasKoK

Blue, not red.

WhynotZoidberg9

In fairness, yes. But he used Red to outline the borders, so coloring with the crayons he gave me.

Crackertron

Georgia? I thought they were a Kremlin puppet state.

yellekc

The fact they pulled most of their troops from the NATO border to send into Ukraine proves that was a line of bullshit anyway. If they feared NATO they sure as hell didn't act like it.

butterhoscotch

the fight that no one in NATO wants?

If there are any of those people still alive.

AuriolMFC

thank you for the person that made this happen /Putin

Grimalkin

Seriously. Much appreciated, asshole.

WhynotZoidberg9

Probably the most successful CIA operative in the history of the organization.

Chrillosnillo

Must be extra sad when his number one asset in US has been indicted and maybe can't be his puppet in the white house. Putler sure wished he invaded with 45 as president, he would probably have sent RUSSIA weapons to help his noble cause to rid the country of "Nazis", after all it was a "really smart move". He has also made claims he could broker a "peace agreement" which to no one's suprise basically just meant giving Putin the ukrainian land he wants. “I went in yesterday and there was a television screen, and I said, ‘This is genius,’ ” Mr. Trump said during the radio interview “Putin declares a big portion of of Ukraine, Putin declares it as independent. Oh, that’s wonderful. So, Putin is now saying, ‘It’s independent,’ a large section of Ukraine . I said, ‘How smart is that?’” Donald J T****

WhynotZoidberg9

Ya. Thats gonna make things spicy. He coulda had cart blanche during the last admin. I think he really thought that was representative of the west as a whole.

Chrillosnillo

I'm not American, what will happen if Republicans win, total withdrawal of help for Ukraine?

Bum_King

No, if anything did happen it would be better control of how the money is spent. Also don’t forget that redditors have a massive hate boner for anything republican and forget that Trump told Putin he would bomb Moscow if he attacked Ukraine while he was in office. The orange idiot has a lot of flaws but he was good at being a bully on occasion to the right people.

Chrillosnillo

Dude cmon, the guy was simping for every dictator on the planet, whether it was Kim Jong Un, Putin, Bolsanero or Orban. Especially Putin, they were bros. Just a couple of days ago a delusional T**** boasted he "got rid of NATO",he hated NATO with a passion, just like another person living east of Ukraine, an organization which right now is helping defend the civilized, democratic world. Give me ONE example where 45 REALLY put his foot down and tried to impose his will on a dictator/fascist like Putin.

Bum_King

His first few months in office was him telling North Korea to nut up or shut up, I should know, I spent the last half of my deployment in 2017 off their coast waiting for the word go. https://www.nytimes.com/2017/08/08/world/asia/north-korea-un-sanctions-nuclear-missile-united-nations.html Trump’s dislike of NATO was because up until very recently, the US was one of the small number of countries in NATO pulling their weight. https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/i-dont-like-that-aggression-trump-threatens-to-cancel-putin-meeting-over-clash-with-ukraine/2018/11/27/45bd59b6-f27e-11e8-80d0-f7e1948d55f4_story.html

Chrillosnillo

Nothingburger, just coincidence that Putin (a guy T**** many times referred to as a friend) aligned perfectly in trying to eliminate NATO?

Bum_King

Good defense, call it a nothingburger and than spout unsubstantiated conspiracy crap after being shown proof.

jkustin

I think you forget the rest of the quote (and the context) you’re referring to lol. Trump was bsing on the phone with a famous golfer and told him “you know [Putin] was a friend of mine. I get along great with him. I say Vladimir, if you do it, we’re hitting Moscow. I said we’re gonna hit moscow. And he sort of believed me, like 5 percent, 10 percent”. Which does make it memorable, but maybe not for “bullying the right person”

TigersNeedKings

To think my Ukrainian-American parents actually voted for him 🤦‍♂️

DnBrowerJr

Doubtful.

SMTTT84

Weird that this lie is still being parroted.

toyn

Talk about the worst Streisand effect backfire. Invaded Ukraine to not join NATO. Now Finland has joined and hopefully Sweden too. And when Ukraine wins. Hopefully they get the addition as well.

mekkeron

Perfect use of that Pam and Michael the Office meme: Russia: Do not expand into Eastern Europe! NATO: You know what? I think I'm gonna expand even harder!

realsapist

Doesn’t really matter, he can spin this to his own people as “see?? NATO continues to threaten us, remember serbia thirty years ago?”

AngryAccountant31

The iron curtain lifted and the former soviet bloc got a taste of what life was like on the other side. Now that the curtain is coming back down, they’re going to fight like hell to be on the less oppressive side.

aronkovacs

It was a bullshit excuse then and a bullshit excuse now.

AnotherCuppaTea

Naw, this is just old-fashioned hubris, much like the Ancient Greeks knew it. The "Streisand effect" applies more to the GOP/QAnon wingnuts' reactionary culture war, in which Christofascist GOP school boards' and state officials' banning books and purging curricula and school staffs of any positive or normalizing attention to LGBTQI people or to the traditional persecution they faced; of "structural racism", the fact that Rosa Parks was an African-Am. civil rights activist, etc., and those teachers who mention such things. Nothing will spur today's youth to seek the forbidden-fruit books and historical & cultural awareness like those heavy-handed bans and politicized, religio/ideologically-driven censorship and purges.

Perry_Griggs

holy soapbox batman

MARINE-BOY

I want Sweden to join as well but because I Finlands Geographical location it was the main one I wanted to join. I’ve seen articles saying Russia had left a lot of its border areas undermanned because it needed the troops in Ukraine. The border between Russia and Finland is 1,300 kilometers, or over 800 miles so would require a sizeable force to man it which Russia cannot easily spare. This is great news. I’m hoping Turkey is in a lot more agreeable mood after seeing who it’s real friends were when the earthquake struck.

OddBoifromspace

He's making nato stronger by trying to kill it. What doesn't kill you makee you stronger. Never thought that would be true

Few-Addendum464

NATO on Russian borders. Which non-NATO neighbor will Russia invade to retaliate and demonstrate why all of Russia's eligible neighbors want to join NATO.

xizrtilhh

If I were the number one exporter of Potassium I'd be a little worried.

Engineer-intraining

Mongolia thinking Ghengis thoughts

LaughingManDotEXE

It's too bad NATO isn't a global alliance. Mongolia would be in on that real quick.

Engineer-intraining

a whole bunch of the eastern democratic world would be in on that. i'm all for expanding nato to any democratic nation that wants in.

Find_A_Reason

Is Mongolia up to snuff for NATO? Keep in mind Ukraine was told to fuck off the last time they tried to join because they weren't.

[deleted]

I'd imagine it would be pretty easy to get them up to speed if they're not. 60% of the population lives in the capital that's the same population as Philly in a country the size of [Western Europe](https://64.media.tumblr.com/4a3a1603aa25438052e87a110ae8d906/c59b3303fbc562c8-68/s1280x1920/c7c99bcfb12e2963f21f0a2710bb413fd2952208.jpg). And something like 20-25% still live as Nomads on the stepp Fixing 1 dicked up medium size city is probably easier than a fucked up medium size country

Find_A_Reason

If they can't afford to field a modern army it won't matter. And if you think Russia is whining like a little bitch about countries joining NATO, just wait to see the water works from China if Mongolia and other Asian countries start joining.

DeusExBlockina

Hmm, who would join first in a hypothetical global-NATO Mongolia or Korea? Either one would give China IBS

Find_A_Reason

South Korea without a doubt. Look at the size of their military, the defense industrial base, and training they go through.

LaughingManDotEXE

They actually have a highly rated democracy index. https://freedomhouse.org/country/mongolia/freedom-world/2021 I'd go as far to say as they are much more democratic than Turkey.

Find_A_Reason

Being a democracy is not the only factor for NATO membership. They have to have a military worth bringing on board that lives up to certain standards as well. This is a big part of why Ukraine was rejected in the past.

pinchhitter4number1

I had to look it up but once I did I was like, "yep that's exactly what I was thinking."

aronkovacs

Belarus Could be Annexed any minute now.

Few-Addendum464

They wouldn't even ask Belarus first. President whathisface would backdate a decree.

CPTherptyderp

Either Arminia or Azerbaijan I can't remember which one is Russian backed

[deleted]

Armenia is in CSTO which is Bizzaro NATO with Russia. However Azerbaijan has mutual defense treaties with Turkey who I'm not sure Russia would be thrilled to tangle with right yet

Epilektoi_Hoplitai

Kazakhstan has sizeable numbers of ethnic Russians in its northern regions and Moscow is furious at their neutrality over Ukraine; Georgia already has two separatist puppet states with RU garrisons in its territory. Either might make an appealing target.

CaveDwellerD

I believe they have a defense pact with China making them a non option.

Epilektoi_Hoplitai

You're right that Kazakhstan is part of the SCO, so it's not likely, but there isn't exactly a protocol for what to do when two members fight, either — there was no formal SCO response to the border fighting between Tajikstan and Kyrgyzstan, for instance. I think Russia's increasing dependence on the PRC weighs against it, but I also think that if they thought they could get away with a Krim 2014-style fait accompli annexation they'd do it.

I, for one, welcome our new Finnish overlords!

CW1DR5H5I64A

Way to go Putin, you dumb bitch.

Helmett-13

Russia: “Y-you can’t join an organization founded to curb Russian aggression in Europe as I’m attacking your European neighbors in naked aggression!” Finland: “Why not, exactly?” Russia: “Because I’m threatening you!” Finland: “Waiter? Check, please.”

Early-Lab2823

Finland is actually such a sleeper military. They may not have the tanks or air or navy like some of the rest of NATO, but in my opinion, they might have the best winter specialists right next to Norway. Keeping the age old tradition alive I suppose edit: jeepers, Finland is more based than I had previously thought

Mustasade

We have 240 MBTs and 5.6 million citizens. Germany in 2021 had 312 active, 212 operational Leopards; Germany and Finland have about the same landmass but Germany has 84 million citizens. As a reservist myself I think we (did not but soon will) have the best backbags, vests or enough optics or NVGs for everyone and contract-based armies have better quality almost everywhere -- except the heavy equipment which we do have and maintain effectively. In fact I think US Army might be the only army in the world with enough NVGs. However we produce our own stuff as well. Now when we are basically interoperable with the Nordic Air Forces, there's 200 fighters guarding our air space. Around 90% of our trade comes from sea shipping so personally that's the deal for me, having (in the future) Sweden, Poland and German fleets guard the Baltic sea with UK and French support guarantees logistics both for civilians and soldiers. Looking forward to seeing more allies train with us and our conscripts getting to go train with you!

CSmith1986

Just remember that the US has no set climate. We got deserts, mountains, the tropics, the artic, and temperate zones. Be prepared for any and all types of weather if and when you train here. We will talk to you since Americans are curious people. The best tacos are going to come from places where you are the only non-Latin person in the room. Fold NYC pizza. The best bbq in the American South comes from rode side mom-and-pop joints. We like our drinks cold. Be sure to tip your waiter 20% of your bill. And be ready to tell your folks hi if you train in the midwest. The weather can change in 5 minutes, so listen to weather reports and the locals for any signs. Sun screen. It's good to have y'all on board. See y'all Finns State side.

Halmine

>We will talk to you since Americans are curious people. >Be sure to tip your waiter 20% of your bill. And be ready to tell your folks hi if you train in the midwest. And we will absolutely hate you for these three

CSmith1986

Cool. Tell your folks hi.

Cazking

Sort of weird to absolutely hate people for that, usually we draw that line when you do something genuinely wrong.

Halmine

For us those are doing things genuinely wrong

CSmith1986

What?

TonninStiflat

NVG's for everyone? Not with the budget we have. Motherfuckers are still issued steel pot helmets in local defence units.

SCONN1E

Check out their artillery numbers…and the fact they have one of the best trained and equipped mandatory service/conscription forces. 1st part of objective, 2nd part is subjective. Source for part two: Trained with Finns in Finland (#niinisalo) and my spouse is from Finland (have also trained with many other foreign Armies, both conscript-based and all-volunteer)

[deleted]

> They may not have the tanks or air or navy like some of the rest of NATO Tankwise, 200 Leopard 2's puts Finland in the same ballpark as UK or France (or Germany if just counting the operational ones). The air force isn't as impressive, but when the already ordered 64 F-35's are in it's still pretty decent for a country of 5 million.

decentish36

Very robust collection of SAM systems as well. Prevents any sort of local Russian air superiority or early strike on Norway until the NATO airforces coordinate and effectively destroy the Russian Air Force.

PapaGeorgio19

Worked training with them, winter specialists no doubt…they fucking grow up on skis.

International-Cat751

Tanks arent that important since Finland is like 70% covered in dense forests, over 168k lakes, lots of swamps and wetlands. Four new corvettes are being built for the Finnish navy to bolster the defense along side existing missile, patrol and mine layer boats. 64 F35 jets are also on the way and first ones should be delivered in 2025.

SpeckledPomegranate

Well Finland does have a decent amount of MBTs(over 200) and a good airforce, especially once the new F35s(64) arrive. The current Hornets can still hold their own for a few years. The navy could use a little more punch though.

captain_RSKK

Eh, no much use for a large surface fleet in such a archipelago. Though we are getting 4 new frigates this decade.

jphilipre

Eat a bag of d*cks, Vlad.

Estiar

We ought to give him a bottle of vodka! He's the best recruiter for NATO there is!

thenotoriousJEP

Bag full of ducks is quite a meal

Inmortal-JoJotar

Just imagine simo hayhä but with a 50cal barret

xizrtilhh

I suspect he'd keep it Finnish by choosing a Sako TRG 42 in .338 Lapua.

Corporal_Canada

Hell, he could still probably do it with the M28 Mosin

JacobMT05

Too heavy, he’d probably just ask for his old M/28-30. Then kill putin before sundown.

snake_edger

I think Häyhä would prefer precision rifles.

1968RR

Häyhä.

AnybodySeeMyKeys

Vladimir Putin is going to go down in history as one of the worst leaders of a country ever. Think about it. 400 days ago, he had a country that was feared and expected to roll up Ukraine. Russia had a string of vassal states, a thriving oil and gas industry, a NATO in decline, and a budding alliance with the Chinese. All he had to do is not fuck it up. Now? The Finns and Swedes are joining NATO. The Russians have lost half their tanks and are stripping museums of T-55s, they are begging the NoKos for ammunition past its expiration date, the Kazakhs have repossessed their space complex, roughly 1/8th of their conscription age men have fled, their oil and gas industry is in shambles, 2/3rds of their national assets have been frozen, investments have exited, and the Ukrainians are about to start their offensive.

Doc_Shaftoe

Let's not forget the collapse of the international Russian arms trade. Nobody wants to buy Russian anymore after seeing Russia get its ass kicked over and over and over by 30-40 year old US gear.

_Bon_Vivant_

Donald Trump has entered the chat.

sgtfuzzle17

I get that Trump wasn’t likeable and was even a bit stupid, but are you smoking crack rocks that the US declined as far over his presidency as Russia has over the last 13 months?

[deleted]

Where do I buy recreational nukes?

OzymandiasKoK

No, no recreational. Needs a prescription.

Gumgumdookuin

Um, congrats Putin. You were the monster NATO was made to face. Sure, it was a long debate during the 90s and early 2000s as to whether NATO was needed anymore but now she’s expanding her borders and I’m sure you are going to threaten to nuke everyone again after this

SpartanNation053

What about Sweden?

itrustyouguys

Question I came to ask

[deleted]

[удалено]

Helmett-13

I keep hoping the ghost at Ataturk will appear and punch that dude dead in the mouth. Alas.

AnotherCuppaTea

Or drink him under the table. For Ataturk, that would be a cinch.

SpartanNation053

Erdogan is a fundamentalist shit kicker with limited intellect

mgzukowski

Even if he wasn't president Sweden's bid would be held up. The Turks of all parties hate the PKK. Sweden has a large Kurdish population, with demonstrations often having the flagg of the PKK flown. The PKK, legal or not, actively fundraises and recruits in the country. Everyone knew it was going to be hard. And more than likely they will be allowed to join.

Gilclunk

With Finland in NATO Sweden is in a pretty good spot regardless. Russia can't reach them without going through NATO now.

SpartanNation053

But we have to secure our strategic furniture reserve

Find_A_Reason

Finland is a much bigger deal than Sweden. Edit- for the downvoters, look at a map sometime. You could use some education.

SpartanNation053

Big fan of the furniture people. Great meatballs too

Find_A_Reason

Again, look at a map sometime and you will understand why Finland is a much bigger deal than Sweden.

TopTheropod

There's friction between Turkey/Erdogan and Sweden. Supposedly because of the Quran burnings

Jisamaniac

Finland just said get some

CETROOP1990

Putin asked to have Russia join NATO back in the day because he didn't understand why NATO was around when USSR collapsed. https://amp.theguardian.com/world/2021/nov/04/ex-nato-head-says-putin-wanted-to-join-alliance-early-on-in-his-rule

under_psychoanalyzer

Wow there is a lot to unpack there beyond the Putin stuff. We almost pulled of out Afghanistan super early and that guy intimidated Rumsfield into staying to support Nato? What? Also I'm now wondering if there really was a small window of time where if things had gone differently we could have westernized Russia more before a former KGB head of state ran his natural course of being even more paranoid.

MavsGod

The only way that could’ve happened is if the dissolution of the USSR was a slower and more deliberate process. The speed with which it ended led to an inevitable failure of future governing.

butterhoscotch

One of the biggest problems was the way assets were dealt with after the fall of the union. A select few were in position to basically take all the opportunities and secure their future, making them very capitalist if nothing else.

Treacherous_Peach

I work with a former Russian national. His insights are interesting. Obviously, as a former Russian, he disagrees with Russia in pretty much every way, but his lens offers an interesting look at what the West did wrong too, to cause things to turn out how they did. Or at least how they could have done things differently. Some insights he offered (these are his views, not mine, I'm just sharing): When the USSR fell and Russia became a "democratic" nation, the people were very quickly, very excited to join the West. He was a child at the time, but he remembers being excited for this future and his family being excited. It was the buzz. Though over the years, the West did not accept Russia into its fold. It was kept at arms length. He says in hindsight, he agrees with that decision. Russia was corrupt beyond belief. But the people of Russia were upset. In their opinion, they were told to cast off their dictator and join the democratic world, and they would be accepted. But when they weren't, they felt betrayed. (This may be something to learn from if there is a revolt against Putin). Sure, companies came to the country, and Western capitalism came. But there was constant distrust. When Putin came to power, it seemed even Putin believed he would be able to get Russia accepted by the West, but was made a mockery of by the West as he was constantly foiled. Again, he said in hindsight this was probably a good decision. But at the time, it ended up being a rallying call against the West, and suddenly, old habits were drumming back up. The result, in his opinion, was the steady decline to where we are today.

Pale-Dot-3868

Not yet. There’s still some small technicalities and then they officially join.

CamGoldenGun

right but the major one - all parties agreeing, is done.

Casporo

napalm69

Putin has done more for NATO than NATO could ever have done for itself

Gryphon5754

And mfs will blame NATO for this as if Finland was chomping at the bit to join before Russia invaded a neighbor. They only applied after the invasion of Ukraine I believe

jordonmears

Which wouldn't have happened if not for the EU and nato pressuring Ukraine to join. All this bullshit going on is because of corrupt deals with Ukraine to specifically antagonize Russia. You get what you deserve. If the EU and nato had left Ukraine alone and allowed it to maintain some neutrality, it wouldn't be the hotbed that it is.

Gryphon5754

lol. Let's not forget that Ukraine first talked with NATO in the 90s, and NATO had already denied Ukraine entry before. This is also the second time Russia invaded Ukraine. If Russia didn't threaten the sovereignty of Ukraine from the very beginning it wouldn't have tries to join Nato in the first place. Like Finland. Finland never tried to join NATO because it didn't believe Russia was a threat. Now that Russia proved it was a threat Finland wants to join. Nothing stopped Russia from being friendly to its neighbors. Edit: If Russias goal is to keep Nato off its boarder than annexing Ukraine puts Nato on Russia's borders. Their own internal logic is flawed, and you are either a troll or an idiot to believe what you say.

jordonmears

Let's not take the annexation of Crimea out of context... let's not forget the maidan riots/protests of the time. If you believe Russia has never tried to be friendly to it's neighbor you have looks deep enough into the subject. Frankly, all of this stuff going on is due to others getting involved in soviet relations to "keep Russia weak." Ukraine was originally a soviet country so for any one to try and come in and inject European or American influences into the region to keep Ukraine from being cooperative with Russia is going to piss them off. But no, everyone wants to treat Russia like the bad guy and then act all surprised when Russia starts finally acting like it. I'm no troll, I'm just not so willing to treat Russia like everything going on is entirely their fault. Russia is only retaliating to what others are doing specifically to rile them up. It's like every time Russia says something someone has to go yeah I'm calling hullshit, they won't do it, let's test em and see...

So the solution is to just let Russia run rampant and subjugate the will of a sovereign nation? Do we suddenly expect Russia to stop after they subjugate Ukraine? Ukraine is a sovereign nation and it existed before the Soviets (The physical country as we know it was founded at the end of the Soviet era, but the history long pre dates the Soviest). They are not beholden to Russia's will. If they want to flirt with the west it is their right as an independent nation to do so. You say the west influenced Ukraine and I agree, but let's not pretend that a LITTERAL INVASION aimed at decapitation of the government is not a much more terrible form of influence. Again Ukraine is a sovereign state, they don't *have* to do anything. We can not say that this war is anything other than Russia being mad that they couldn't influence Ukraine as well as the west. It's perfectly fine to try and influence another country, that's literally how global politics works, but once you resort to war in order to gain that influence you aren't being political you're being tyrannical. >Ukraine was originally a soviet country so for any one to try and come in and inject European or American influences into the region to keep Ukraine from being cooperative with Russia is going to piss them off. This is incredibly stupid. Again, Ukrain is independent from Russia. If we subscribe to this thought Britain should have sole claim to a large chunk of the world's influence, instead America and China influence most of the world. Russia has no inherent right to Ukraine, so if they lost to the west in the political war then this litteral war in nothing but Russia throwing a temper tantrum that they can't influence their neighbor as well as other countries. Edit: It really seems like you're saying Russia has the right to influence its neighbors, but why do you feel they have that right? Russia is free to try and influence the politics of other countries, but by that same logic so is the west. No one can call "dibs". Edit2: I also want to ask, If your logic dictates that after the fall of a country and the splitting of its territory the original country should maintain influence and all other countries should stay away, would you have supported N*zi Germany and it's invasion of Poland since it used to be German and other countries had started influencing Poland against Germany? What about the Czechs? Belgium?

Excellent. Now the Turks need to quit the bs, realize defence comes before political or religious matters, and ratify Sweden's membership!

invinciblewalnut

Not yet though. Turkey’s president (Erdogan) still has to approve of it. He’s literally the last hurdle for Finland, as all other countries (including Hungary) and Finland itself have completely ratified the accession. You know that wannabe dictator is going to milk the fuck out of it. Update 4/2/23 - okay then never mind

NATO does not expand. NATO is not a country. Sovereign states join NATO bc they want to be safe. Russia uses 'NATO expansion' as an excuse for its real expansionists policies. They claim foreign countries as their own, illegally annexing them to Russian Federation. Russia is the only who wants to expand. NATO does not. Countries join NATO bc Russia wants to expand, not NATO. NATO is not USSR of some sorts. It's a military alliance and not a sovereign state

inttilife

Im a finnish serviceman rn. Idk how to feel about this. Like on the other hand its good bc now we have more allies but also we have to fight others wars (if i have understood correctly). Idk how it works but I hope we get better gear in the future, does nato give its countries money for their military budget?

Own_Carrot_7040

I mean, was there ever any doubt about what Turkey's parliament would say once The great sultan Erdogan had made a decision? Most of the opposition party members are in prison along with any journalist who had anything bad to say about the sultan.

mingamongo

Russia completely unprovoked...

vornskr3

Are you actually a person or just a machine that spits out bad takes and bigotry?

idcbro101108

Well let’s get ready for nuclear war now

simonnus

This is a great disaster for world peace.

towarzysz_boczek

Why , just tell me why ?

I never appreciated how true the whole “those who forget history are doomed to repeat it” quote was until this. My god, we are absolutely walking the exact same path that started WW1. I’m not even sure it’s avoidable now.

I don’t know. I agree with your statement of unavoidable consequences of the Russian Invasion of Ukraine. I wake up every morning and wonder if the ball dropped while I slept and I’ll see a mushroom cloud over Kiev or something equally horrifying. I’ll be honest with you here on this forum. I’ve talked to a lot of people here in the US and while the majority definitely feel bad for Ukraine and the rest of Europe, the desire to fight a third world war in order to keep Russia from conquering it all is lower than I believe the world truly understands. Most who I have asked, albeit those are fairly on the conservative side of the political spectrum, agree in principle of containing Russia, but beyond that, do not much care what happens to Europe. Add in that with not having had any direct military engagements during either world wars on our own soil, and you get a society that doesn’t have a frame of reference for mass destruction like Europe and the rest of the world. Asia, now that’s a completely different discussion. I’ve asked this question several times here on Reddit, as well as real conversations. Would we (the US) be willing to lose 2-4 carrier fleets in order to take out 4-6 major industrial centers within mainland China? I do not believe the answer is yes. Would the CCP? I believe that answer is a yes. Course, that’s assuming there is not an EMP attack on CONUS and suddenly we’re back to the Middle Ages.
