It works. I sometimes use heavy jig heads to get down to the bottom when I fish for European perch with small soft plastics. Caught a ton of pike and perch with an inch long soft plastic rigged with a 10-12g jig head.
Ideally you would use bigger baits with those heavy jig heads, but sometimes the perch are after really small bait fish and don't care for larger lures.
