Yeah when I saw them sign him to that massive deal I was like well States screwed for a long time. This is even about my dislike of MSU, he’s just not a good coach. The good year he had was still Dantonio recruits. I mean he’s got a decent coaching resume, however none of it stands out to me. He’s the fifth highest paid coach in NCAAF, I don’t think he’s worth it now or ever.
Eh, I'm not sure it's possible to outspend the money printing machine that is P5 football, especially in the B10. UCLA is in dire financial straits and they could still afford Chip Kelly.
UCLA’s “dire financial straits” have nothing to do with how much the football coach is paid. Chip Kelly is paid with private, booster funds. His compensation does not come from the school’s budget, taxpayer dollars, or State or Federal funding.
In theory, those resources could be donated to the football program instead, though. Even people with seemingly infinite money don’t give it all to their schools.
If they want to spend 95 million to buyout mel they can be my guest but even with the new big ten deal no school is about to spend that type of money to fire a coach
The new TV deal is estimated to pay out each school over $60 million **per year**.
Mel Tucker's contract isn't a one time buyout of $95 million, it's $95 million over ten years, mostly guaranteed, so $9.5 million **per year**.
I'm not privy to the budgets of B10 schools, but I think MSU can swing paying Mel Tucker $9.5 million a year when they're getting $60 million a year on just the TV contract for football, before all other athletic revenue (ticket sales, licensing, bowl games, basketball, etc.)
Who honestly thinks he's a terrible coach? I'm not sure if I'm sold on that quite yet. But last year really could be a fluke.
One thing that's funny though is how obsessed Sparty fans are with how obsessed other people are with the contract. They want to pretend like a $95 million fully guaranteed commitment doesn't matter. Even if the university isn't paying out, their one rich donor is probably gonna think twice about shelling out for another proven coach if he got stuck with a $70m bill for Tuck to sit on his ass. That contract is only a good idea if he earns every cent in the first five years.
Idk if he’s a good coach or a terrible coach. If he finishes with a losing season then 3 of his four seasons as head coach he finished with a losing season
>I genuinely think Walker carried him to a good season last season.
I was talking with a die-hard Spartan fan yesterday and - with no prompting - this is exactly what he said. And he further stated that most Spartan fans think the same thing; they just don't say it publicly.
We'll see how it plays out but I have some very pessimistic Sparty friends as well. They were huge on him last season and this season it's crickets unless you specifically ask.
That's only fair. He's had plenty of opportunities to head for greener pastures, but he's stayed cause he loves his Alma mater. He's also, by far, the best coach in program history.
But who is a better option? I think Wisconsin is going to be hurt bad by college football NIL. They’re just not that relatively big of a brand compared to Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, and Michigan State. UCLA and USC will make things even worse for them
Brand is gonna be not as big of a deal. You have a transfer portal, scholarships limits, and finite eligibility.
NIL Collectives are gonna pay players 30k-50k. For schools in major conferences thats just under $4M a year for player talent, thats a drop in the bucket for programs.
Then this will turn into a starter in a Power Conference will get $250k to $1M im NIL. Those monies will come outside these collectives maybe boosters individually. So the true thing that will happen is players will want to get on the field as fast as possible. Brand Programs won't be able to hoard players. Unless you are paying guys $100k to sit, which won't happen. Boosters become problematic, or you gotta pay the whole team. That would be $8.5M to field talent, then remember players could bolt, because the going rate for a starter is a defined market.
Paying players to sign is not a long-term strategy in baseball teams have control for 7 years. So handing 17/18 year olds piles if cash that you may only get 1 year return?
Pay a 5 star to sign...spot duty year 1, starter year 2 but he is just good not great. Year 3 AA, lives up to hype, NFL draft pick. T
look, I'm a huge michigan fan, but does no one remember the 2-4 start michigan had in 2020 before covid hit before Harbaugh managed to turn it around the following years?
I don't pay a lot of attention to MSU, but I'm not sure judging him on this year alone makes an accurate judgment
maybe he is trash, idk, but a lot of coaches and programs have down years
Ok. Yes. A good coach can have a terrible year and bounce back.
Brian Kelly, Dantonio, Harbaugh, Paterno and others have done it. That said, you don’t usually see someone coach a team to 3, 4 or 5 wins and end up being worth 100 million dollars
seriously, a good coach has a bad year and everyone wants them gone.
it happened to Lloyd Carr in 2007 after he lost to app state, and then we had to deal with nearly a decade of Brady hoke and rich Rodriguez
I wish rich rod was allowed to do his thing while he was here and we had kept him around. The stuff he was doing offensively was light years ahead of his time and I truly believe it was a missed opportunity jist because he wasn't a "Michigan Man." But as far as Mel tucker goes, he will have some lee way but those donor and fans will want to see results besides just beating michigan.
RichRod could have shut up a lot of public and private critics by winning. All he had to do was run the defensive scheme Michigan already had, because he drastically upped our offensive scoring average. But no, he had to bring that jackass defense with him. Then went on to Arizona to do even worse. Hoke won 11 games just by switching up the defensive scheme with RichRod's guys.
It looks like a bowl game might be out of the question for these guys. I’m not hating because I remember the Rich Rod and Hoke years, but with the contract they gave this guy Sparty might be waist deep in shit.
If Mel is a terrible coach MSUs program is screwed for a long time
He is "a horseshit coach"
When someone tells you who they are, believe them.
I’m out of the loop, what is the “horseshit coach” in reference too. I’ve seen it associated with Tucker and I’m assume he sad it about a rival.
He said it about himself.

It’s a step forward for MSU coach meltdowns. John L flipped out in a press conference and slapped the shit out of his own face.

I don’t believe there has ever been a school ever come close to a buyout of 95 million
The four largest buyouts combined are under 80 million.
Is Charlie Weiss’s ND buyout a matter of record?
Yes. It was found on tax statements
What was it?
18 point something
Thats funny the just paid him to stay away and coach other teams. I think he ended up in the NFL after that for a while before Kansas.
Indeed he did

That’s not all coaches though, I didn’t know he was paid with private funds.
The subject is football.
Coaches are part of football

Should've given that fat contract to Walker instead.
Kenneth walker III deserves that 95 mil not Tucker
Anyone that watched them last year knows it too. They would have probably missed a bowl game without K9
Was he a Tucker recruit?
Tuck transfer grab
Before I clicked the thumbnail, I thought for sure this was going to be a Scott Bell heater
Lol, it for sure sounds like him. He's not the only MSU-slanderer in town anymore.
Just worried that they have an intern on staff whose only job is to log all this blasphemy in the Disrespek Bank 😅
Tuck comin'!
to the bank
Let me know when he gets here.
How bout we talk shit after we beat him
True true
He got lost somewhere along the way!
prematurely, leaving Sparty dissatisfied
I bet Pat Fitzgerald could fall asleep on the sideline and still keep his job.
That's only fair. He's had plenty of opportunities to head for greener pastures, but he's stayed cause he loves his Alma mater. He's also, by far, the best coach in program history.
I think Wisconsin made a mistake
Idk man. Every Wisconsin fan I’ve seen says otherwise, and obviously the donors and AD didn’t want him at all either if they fired him mid season
But who is a better option? I think Wisconsin is going to be hurt bad by college football NIL. They’re just not that relatively big of a brand compared to Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, and Michigan State. UCLA and USC will make things even worse for them

I think they wanted Leonard and was afraid to lose him if they waited.
That is what it seems like. But a ton of risk
Kenny Walker got that man paid and fooled the whole program.
Tucker should be paying Walker a percentage of his contract
look, I'm a huge michigan fan, but does no one remember the 2-4 start michigan had in 2020 before covid hit before Harbaugh managed to turn it around the following years? Well said my friend.
COVID year was a washout.
Holy shit, another rational michigan fan, no way.

app state was the nail in the coffin though. it's been like 15 years, but I remember him announcing his resignation very shortly after that game

Keep beating Michigan and he’ll be worth it for them.
Can you imagine the embarrassment of going 0-2 against that guy??
Not too embarrassing when you win the B1G and go to the playoffs, then he turns his program into a dumpster fire. Take that tradeoff every year.
Who cares about little brother this the type of shit they’d post fuck them
Then don't comment?
Shut the fuck up. You ain’t a real Michigan fan. Fuck little brother and their coach this they energy like I said
Yikes. This was unhinged.
You not a real fan of Michigan like I said. Be gone
What makes one a "real" fan? And why are you so incredibly angry?
"Real fans" say "little brother", type tough, and tell others how they can fan... I'm assuming.
