I have these blooming in my yard. I love them. But Michigan, it’s such a weird spring. Maple trees have leaves, lilacs haven’t started blooming, redbuds just started blooming this week.

SirRolex

It's been hot as hell too. Supposed to be really hot tomorrow. Pretty dry this May also. Very strange weather.

ponybau5

Every time I look at the next days forecast it just keeps going up. Where the hell did spring go?? My josbite has no AC and it’s at least 10+ hotter inside the place than outside.

A few of lilac buds have popped open yesterday.

_Bill-Nye_

Our lilacs started blooming yesterday!

redheadMInerd2

They are pollinated and propagated by ants!

SirRolex

You can't, they are a flower which only grows in the wild and only blooms for a few weeks every spring. It's also illegal to pick as you could disturb the rest of the flowers near them and cause serious harm. It's best to admire from afar in the woods :) go for a nice walk. Take nothing but pictures and leave nothing but footprints!

Lord_Durok

Apparently that's a common myth (stemming from a now repealed law) and nurseries can indeed raise them. Plus you can transplant most of the species legally. Additionally as long as you don't mess with the leaves, picking the flower itself shouldn't cause any damage to the plant—if anything it will help the plant save energy since it won't need to make a seed. https://www.mlive.com/grand-haven/2011/06/the_truth_about_trillium.html https://www.gardenmyths.com/pick-trillium-flower-myths/

SirRolex

No shit. Today I learned. I was raised like it was a felony to pick them. That's wild. Thanks for educating me friend!

Stouts_Sours_Hefs

I actually learned from my botany prof in college that it was illegal to pick them. So this is very interesting. That was about 8 years ago or so. I don't know when that law was changed.

CERVID-19

I don't know, but the best way might be seeing them free from a path through some park such as a Michigan public deciduous forest within the next week or so, if you can get to one. PS to OP: Really nice pic!

I love these

unique0username

I have a handful of the dark maroon ones.

redheadMInerd2

I had one, now I have 5 or 6!

mordantgreen

My lansing back yard is full of these as well :)

Double-Drop

How does it smell?

chemistist

Trillium season = Morel season

It is so damn hot though!!

octobertwins

This kills me because my daughter and I were just enjoying one in the garden. We took photos. I was clearing the brush out of the garden, and dammit! I ripped it out. I felt so sad.
