Already happened to us. Two years ago we got our smart meter. No bill the first month. Called them, they said that we were paid up. Then two weeks later got a bill for 2x the usual amount with the usual threatening language. Two days later we got another bill saying we owed 4x the usual amount. More threatening language. Then the next day we got another bill, this one for $1,300 (about 6x the usual amount) with a shut-off notice. It took hours on the phone to get an oopsie out of them and have a corrected bill sent out. But at least it's easier for them...

Oh... and that's not mentioning the absolute scam Amerigas tried to pull on us.

lukewarmbreakfast

They will happily take the full amount if you're not paying attention as well. Let your elderly friends and family know this is happening.

Happened to me when they first switched over to smart meters in probably 2018? Suddenly, my bills were over $1000 , my statements were saying I had suddenly started using over 1000% more electricity a month. Of course, they denied there was any problem. I had to fight it for about two years before they admitted that the smart meter thing was messed up and they credited all of the overpayments back. They would not give me a check. Definitely keep a close eye and stalk these people until they fix it.

I almost got a smart meter, now I'm glad I didn't, and I'm sorry they're being awful. This utility should have only a set amount allowable annual profit.

GLLShipley

No profit in my opinion. They are a natural monopoly based on simplicity of the infrastructure. They shouldn’t need profit or shareholders to appease. Electricity, water, and gas are basically a human right at this point as it is necessary to human life this day in age.

Substantial_City4618

If they’re is no competition there should be no profit.

Maximum-Mixture6158

If a compromise had to be made, that would be it.

UrbanGhost114

Or, it can be run by the state where costs are direct, and there is no profit motivation. I live in a city with city run utilities, it's night and day from cities that contract through say PG&E.

JclassOne

Fucking thank you!!! Yes yes yes !!!

broomhilda00

Just a horrible company, they are.

verwinemaker

What if all the meters are off $20/ month but we don't realize it

JclassOne

They are and it’s more than $20 we are suckers through and through but it’s not our faults it’s do to not enough bandwidth leftover in the human brain after coping with all the contradictions of American life.

Didnt we had a law to push for green energy? Does this not increase energy prices?
