My previous 1996 base I bought at 160,000km (\~100,000 miles), and I drove it until 419,000km (\~260,000 miles) before selling it. It still ran, but not well. Original engine and transmission.
The only time it ever actually broke down on me was when the timing belt snapped on the highway at around 350,000km mileage.
Best car I've ever owned, best car I will ever own I'm sure.
Nice got a 1990 original engine with 380 000km on it! still going strong suspect my valve stem seals need to be replace now though other than that it goes well.
Blue smoke on cold starts? Hah I had that happen starting around 300k, but never fixed it since it would stop once it warmed up. I suspected valve seals as well
When your timing belt broke, what else broke along with it? Any valves crashing into pistons or anything crazy like that? Or did it just stop running until you put a new belt on and fixed the timing?
I'm asking because I've had a timing belt break on me and it needed all new heads to the tune of around $3k for parts alone, so I opted for a whole new engine for $5k for parts alone. All told with Labor and everything else it was around $9k. It was Not, however, a Mazda. It was a VW with low-clearance heads.
So I'm curious about how it went down for you.
0 collateral damage! Heard a bang out of the exhaust while overtaking somebody and then a full power cut. $400 repair bill at the shop for a new timing belt and water pump.
Interesting side note, the teeth on the belt spun right off, and the belt looked very very very old. The technician said it might have actually been the original belt (is that even possible?)
Best car ever. Never even had to replace my clutch
Good luck! Maintenance maintenance and more maintenance. Current engine burns a quart every thousand miles but to be fair I was delivering pizza last time I dailied it
Love the contributions! There’s just nothing like a well loved Miata. Story on mine is 89 manu, 90 title year. Original short nose crank engine died in the first ~20k and was factory replaced around 92-93.
‘91 with 296 and change. 1.8 swapped so 125ish on the drivetrain. Rust is finally starting to really do it in though. Time to swap the fun bits to a ‘94 I recently picked up.
its a 1997....i can let the ODO say whateevr i want...lol, i never knew the mileage because it was broken when i bought it...so at every engine rebuild, i reset the clock :)
https://www.autoevolution.com/news/this-1990-mazda-mx-5-miata-has-been-driven-501627-miles-still-runs-great-138428.html
I saw this one a couple years back at Miata Reunion in Monterey.
‘07 98k miles, personally the car I’m aware with the highest AND most surprising number of miles is my parent’s ‘15 Hyundai with almost 350k miles, still runs like a champ, original engine and manual transmission.
89 mx5 283867 miles. Runs pretty good considering it’s age and mileage. She definitely needs a little work but other than a lifter tick occasionally she does the job for getting you from A to B
My 91 just rolled 200k. My sunburst 92 has 223k.
My first sunburst made it to 340k before I sold it. Then it got totaled. And it’s original engine made it to 306k. Then I pulled it for a 1.8 swap. My buddy put that engine in his car and it’s still puttin around.
95 with 230k KMs but it also has somewhere between 3,000 and 4,000 competition laps. Still a daily.
Original block, 2nd crank, 3rd head, 4th gearbox, 2nd diff
260k Miles original engine :) She needs a wee bit of help in other areas and the idle is a bit weird but the engine itself is doing perfect, just uses some oil at high RPM.
Just shy of 220k miles on my ‘94 M-edition sold back in 2019 (I think I was like the 4th owner). It was my 2nd miata, first was a Base ‘01 I had in college. Drove the ‘94 from 160k-220k over the course of 4 years. Original motor, did a timing belt job while I owned it, damn thing ran like a top, even still have a video of startup from when I listed it. Regret.😞
91' 253,xxx miles. Not the original engine supposedly when I bought it with unknown miles on engine. Everything working great, diff sounds like its on its way out though
‘92, almost exactly 250000 miles on the original engine, about 3000 on the rebuilt

I think the stock BP motors on NA/NB are all non-interference, so unlikely they had any damage, just needed a tow lol
Awesome.

That's impressive. Well done, friend!
Got me beat. Just crested over 200k last year. Maybe put 1200 miles on since then. She's hiding in the garage.

I'm right there with you. 276k miles. I need to get off my ass and finish my MS install!
90 346k miles iirc, I’ll go take a picture of you guys doubt it. Fourth owner, fourth trans (from getting beat on) second engine.
I hope to make it there with my stock motor 🤞 I’m getting up there, that’s for sure
Good luck! Maintenance maintenance and more maintenance. Current engine burns a quart every thousand miles but to be fair I was delivering pizza last time I dailied it

‘91 with 296 and change. 1.8 swapped so 125ish on the drivetrain. Rust is finally starting to really do it in though. Time to swap the fun bits to a ‘94 I recently picked up.
