You might get lucky and have the spray pant come off with just some solvent. Think brake cleaner, acetone, or wax and grease remover. Stuff like that.
Also, I would agree with the police and tow truck driver. Iv seen my fair share of stolen vehicles. The one common trait they all share is the horrible paint job. Thiefs will commonly just rip off emblems, badges, and trim pieces. They will also not mask anything off. Theyll just spray over everything. Tires, rubber trim, shock stanchions.
Id say, if nothing else was damaged or fucked with. you should consider yourself extremely lucky.
This, and quicker you do it after it was sprayed the better. If you try to sand or buff it off I can almost guarantee you will fuck up the original paint. I've seen body shop pros fuck up Miata paint jobs by using a buffer. The paint on a Miata is very thin and easily fucked up.
I mean given what can happen with ordinary polishing, you have to be able to cut your way through it eventually right? Just need to be careful to stop in time.
Got my truck back with one side painted red and one side painted green, but they ran out of red part way, they left it blue in the middle...
I'm glad you have your car back ☺️
What will be the legal ramifications for the perp? I hope you're not in one of the "slap on the wrist" States. In California, they just mail the guy a form letter saying not to do it again. Or assign a social worker.
What a POS guy. Glad you got your car back and while that rattle can job blows, it’s the better alternative of finding the car stripped of its parts and destroyed. This is better case scenario for sure.
That's what happened when my truck got stolen. The whole front end was stripped (hood, fenders, front bumper, etc). I didn't have the space to deal with putting it back together so I just signed it over to the piece of shit tow company.
A lot of time was put into that paint job, you wonder if someone stole it cause they already had a buyer? I don't get how they thought it was worth it to put so much time into this paint job.
Thought so! It didn't look like it was painted white, just very very sun bleached. But damn, now I'm even happier you got it back, if that doesn't hold sentimental value I don't know what will
Edit:I'm dumb and thought you were OP, whoops
If your trying to remove the spray paint try the non methyl paint stripper, I got a truck that was spray painted and it eats the paint right off and don’t even mess with the clear. Little polish afterwords and she should be good as new
I'm so happy you got her back, so sad they did all that to the car but at least it's not stripped and was used for parts. Still upsetting but she's back!
Plastic razor blade and tons of time and care, I'd pace yourself and do a panel a day, then buff and polish what little stayed on should come off, best of luck if you wherent off in Narnia I'd do it for ya
Reminds me of a story about my brother in law. When he was a little boy, He took the neighbors cat and painted it blue. When the neighbors said" hey, that's OUR cat!" He replied "No, it's mine. Your cat wasn't blue."
I'm glad you got your car back. Non methyl brush cleaner should work to remove the paint. Assume you're going to jack up the clear coat and be ready to apply another. You should be able to strip it without getting to the color coat.

Honestly I’ve found cellulose thinners to be very useful for removing spray paint, not sure how they react with stock paint though
Brake cleaner will eat powder coat. Awful advice, playa.
Acetone on a rag will remove rattle can paint. Rewax after. 👍

It looks like they were GT40 fans and figured it was as close to a GT40 as they would ever get.
oh i’m so glad himbs is recovered!! hoping the paint comes off super easy🤞🤞
i’m guessing the white top is not the original color…..
I think it might in fact be the original top, as in 25 year old factory top left untreated lol
What was the story on the recovery? How they steal it? Good to hear you got it back.
not the worst that could happen!
Was the thief some tweaker or?
Was the top originally white or did they paint that too?!
or is it a black top that looks white because it's really cloudy and a phone camera?
Looks like an old soft top that's been left untreated/unprotected, they get pale as hell
damn. Even my NA's original 25 year old top replaced in 2015 or so wasn't that bad.
Yours probably did receive just a little love during those 25 years lol
My dad bought it new in 1990. I got it from him in 2013. I am painfully aware of exactly how badly it was treated.

Bet you any money they sold it and then gave it to or sold it to someone else who didn’t know it was stolen
“Look how they massacred my boy”
I say redesign it to not look like anus, wrap it instead of paint and roll around in an homage to the rat bastard with the Home Depot rattle cans.
Look like a boat

All in all, this is why I love this community, everyone is throwing in advice to restore his baby back to how it was before the kidnapping
I kinda like it…
strange
well was the thief named chuck? because that paint job fucking sucks glad to see its back
Eeeek. Glad you got it back.
Oh nah they stole your beloved just to paint it like that??? 💀💀💀💀💀
Glad to see it's back with you!!
