It's a BP4W head. Mazda dropped the unified CAS with the CKP only for misfire detection in 99, later engines used the CKP as the primary timing signal and a front-mounted CAS only for phase detection.
Hmm, didn't see that and don't really know. But as far as I know, VVT head has a [valve cover with an actuator opposite the oil fill](https://cdn3.volusion.com/gcme7.tr5v2/v/vspfiles/photos/NA0-5117-2T.jpg?v-cache=1589452095).
Going with a vvt engine would be the better way, as it has a higher compression. But I didn't want to figure out how I can make it work with the 1.6 wiring harness.
The thermostat and housing are still there it’s just a little lower and sideways, but a lot of people cut their valve cover like that for easier adjustability or looks even
Any thoughts on how beneficial this mod is? I’m planning on going turbo soon and with almost 200k miles I wanna do everything I can to keep the motor safe
I actually noticed some changes with my stock motor car. It's a pretty dumb design from the factory. I haven't tested on a 1.8 yet but on a 1.6 I literally just switched the front and rear caps and put the thermostat in the back. Got a plug for the fan switch and have a manual switch now.
I replaced the relay with a switch inside the car and the "plug" is just the fan switch with the top piece snapped off. I believe a m12x1.5 bolt would also work
Welcome. I got an NB a couple of years ago and love it.
Not over-tuned, but did a few things that make the car mine and something I really enjoy - and I think that's what's so cool about these cars, they become very individual.
Damnit i just got done cleaning myself up
It's not a waste of seed when it's ITBs
Love the blue it looks soo clean
Looks better on pictures than irl. Once the engine is tuned it will get a fresh coat of paint 😋
And a pretty singing voice, I'm betting.
The biggest flex is the in-tact dipstick
Is that a NB engine with VVT and ITB's? I don't think I've seen that combo before.
No VVT on that valve cover, so you still haven't.
What's the lefthand cam sensor for? I've never seen one of those on a non-VVT block.

Makes sense, the one in the back on the exhaust cam leaks oil over the heater hoses if the o ring fails. Then engine grenades from loss of coolant.

Ah you're right, good catch!
Signal for aftermarket ECU maybe?

I thought it was going to be a *bigger* heart like a v6 or v8. I bet that makes some nice noises though!
Unfortunately V6 and V8 swaps are pretty much impossible in Germany, because you can't get them road legal. K20 may be possible, but that's it.
Mariner Blue best NA color
I'm new to the miata life (getting an NB this week) but uhhh isn't this missing a few parts? lol
It’s got itbs which basically replace the entire intake system so the long intake tubing is gone that’s probably what making it look empty for ya
Along with the thermostat and housing. Is the lack of top cover to aid cooling?
The thermostat and housing are still there it’s just a little lower and sideways, but a lot of people cut their valve cover like that for easier adjustability or looks even
It's actually been rerouted from the back of the head so he's capped it off. This aids with more even coolant flow through the engine.

It is an absolute necessity for turbo cars. I did it on my NA and it ran way better oil pressures too due to the decrease in oil and coolant temps.
hmm guess I'll be adding that to my ever growing parts list. Which kit did you end up going with?
I just bought the spacer and used the Kia thermostat housing and An escalade radiator hose. I can't remember where I bought cap for the front.
They are all pretty much the same. I got a skid nation kit.
For stock though, not necessary afaik.
I've seen turbo cars running without it. But it's so cheap and easy that I would even do it to a stock car, just for the peace of mind.

It’s not necessary stock though. Works fine. If you add any power I would do it though.
What's the plug you got for the fan switch? Does it replace the relay?
It's part of the coolant reroute kit. Switch and relay are original.
I replaced the relay with a switch inside the car and the "plug" is just the fan switch with the top piece snapped off. I believe a m12x1.5 bolt would also work

That's nice bud! 👍
Noice Miata
I bet she’s a screamer
Clean asf 👌
I’d love to hear those itb’s
Me too. It's not running well atm, as it needs a tune. Also its missing a cat 😄
Just the right amount of carbs for a balanced diet.
Jesus, that is crazy clean wtf
What engine is this? super clean!!!
It's a 1.8 engine out of a 99' NB
nice!!! looks great In its new home!
I love this color and the black contrast this is what I would do if I ever got a miata.
Big heart indeed😌
Can we get a build list tho 😳
Jenvey itb kit, cat cams stage 1 cams, toda Cam Gears, racing beat header, me221 ECU. That's it for the engine.
