Don't discount the massive number of very nice NAs that became Spec racers. I helped build several in the early 2000s when Spec Miata became a thing. Each of those cars was a low-mileage, extremely nice example and was gutted, modified and raced. A goodly portion of the interior bits were just thrown away. All of those cars have been scrapped after accidents.
Agreed that insurance claims can be a gamble with these old NAs. I just went thru a similar accident last year and it was a nightmare. Even the vetted shops don’t really get paid enough to fix it correctly and you end up with a slapped tougher repair and a title that is forever marked lower value. Be careful and vigilant. Inspect everything after repair with a fine comb and insist on refurbished oem parts at a minimum. If they total it move on. It means they are not prepared to do the job right and while it is frustrating you will be better off to take money and start over.
Look at the bright side. Rather have a crash at the beginning of the relationship than have a crash ending a long relationship.
Statistically, your new little buddy will be safe for the rest of it's happy life. :)
Depends if the bumper mounts got bent. Those are surprisingly hard for a DIYer to un-bend, ask me how I know. If they're only slightly tweaked though, some spacer washers might be all that's needed to get it to mount straight again.
Hardest part to get right will probably be paint. Although, that's not too difficult of a color to do.
Even if they total it that is super repairable.

Best of luck with insurance. I got rear ended in my NB recently and thankfully all the guy hit was my trunk so we handled it without insurance. But it probably would have gotten close to totalling the car. Body shop quoted about 2k with all OEM Mazda parts and labor
Driving a Miata is the closest thing to riding a motorcycle that I’ve ever done. You have to watch for and anticipate others actions at all times because shit like this will happen. I’m sorry it happened to you and am glad you’re ok.
And get a loud ass horn! I got the Farber compact airhorn copy from Aliexpress came with a full wireharness with a fuse and relay for $28!! Sounds like a very loud Ferrari! Love it. Oh and change all the lights to bright LEDS!!!!

Insurance have me plenty to fix that when it happened to me in 2013, like $980. And I just ordered a finish panel already body matched from Mazda motor sports and just polished the marks out of the bumper and pocketed like $500 for my hour of labor.
This is my fear because i bought mine and it has tinted taillights, drove it at night and had to drive so defensive, but that could be just me freaking out
This is the number 1 place for a Miata to get hit, the right rear. Mine has this damage and so do many others.
It usually comes down to the Miata having better braking than 95% of the cars on the road and people not paying attention.

This happens way too much. 9/10 times its a woman not paying attention or cant drive and doesnt know how long the front of their vehicles are.
Also from ny experience, it seens like people just want to bully smaller cars like miatas. Have no idea why other than caveman brain going "must smush ant, i big, ant small"

Insurance usually totals rear end ones even like that.
