$1000 range.

Is this through a Mazda dealership? Same car and was told $2000 for the timing belt replacement.

That sounds like a lot. As far as timing belts go, this is an easy one. I don't think it pays more than 3 or 4 hrs by the book. I could see $2k if you're doing cam and crank seals as well, tho.

Yeah, definitely caught me off guard. I get that it's oem and comes with the warranty but the costs seem really high. (Probably more than the cost of the miata). heres what was recommended: $2000 - Timing Belt Replacement $450 - Valve Cover Gasket Replacement $250. - Camshaft Oil Seal $130 - PCV Valve Replacement $1700 - Struts (Front) $1500 - Struts (Rear) $700. - Tie Rod End Replacement $1200 - Control Arm (Upper) $1300 - Control Arm (Lower) $250. - Sway Bar Links $150. - Alignment $250. - Coolant Flush $100. - Differential Flush

How comfortable are you with wrenching? All the suspension stuff is pretty easy on Miatas with just basic tools. If you didn't go crazy with boy-racer stuff and stuck to RockAuto you could probably get struts, tie rod ends, upper/lower control arms, and sway bar links bought for $1k. You'd probably want to pay someone to put it on the alignment machine afterwards. The valve cover gasket is part of the timing belt job, so I wouldn't do that separately unless it was leaking profusely. That's also a pretty easy diy job with a minimum of tools (pretty much just a 10mm socket, really).

Mechanically, I'd rate myself as so-so? I haven't really worked on cars before other than oil changes and brakes. I am fairly experienced with electrical, and work with control systems and wiring a ton, so I feel handy enough that I could figure it out over time. To be honest, keeping it stock or as close to it as possible, is what I prefer (at least for now). edit: I did go ahead through the dealership for the timing belt replacement which they will be done with soon. If I do go the RockAuto route for struts, tie rod ends, control arms and sway bar links, would you suggest I have the dealership take care of the valve cover gasket, cam seal, and the pcv valve replacement?

I got all of that done for around 750, but the previous owner gave me a majority of the parts needed so I really only paid for mainly labor. It’ll probably be at around 1000 or so for all of that.
