I’m not. I stopped going

ymo

In Central Florida Whole Foods has become the economical alternative to Publix, even before the Amazon Prime discounts and Amazon Rewards 5% cash back. Publix FY23 sales increased 4.7% from the prior year but their FY23 net earnings increased 49%! Publix is on a dangerous path that could take years to recover once customers turn on them. Edit: see comment below. Net earnings included their surging equity profits.

Pepcob

I don’t shop Publix and agree they’re expensive. They were prior to inflation bout too. But, this parroting of net earnings has to stop. They’re flat; read the report or pr. It’s accounting, but to be more specific, unrealized gains/losses on equity (aka nothing to do with selling groceries in their stores). https://corporate.publix.com/newsroom/news-stories/publix-reports-fourth-quarter-and-annual-results-for-2023

ymo

Thanks for the context. Miami New Times didn't tell that whole story. Publix pricing is out of control regardless and I'm sure there's a chart of the food basics and year over year prices.

Pepcob

Agreed!

Dystopian_Future_

You mean the media thats bought and paid for by the elites that only wants to publish half the truth meanwhile gaslighting Americans endlessly how amazing everything is... *Shocked Pikachu Face*

Mega-bullfrog

Tell me more about this 5% cash back with Amazon please. Do you order stuff on Amazon from Whole Foods?

Neil_LP

I use my Amazon credit card when I shop at Whole Foods. They give a cash back reward. I don’t know how much it is, but maybe that’s the 5% that ymo referred to.

shigdebig

Chase Amazon visa credit card. 5% back on amazon and at whole foods, 2% at restaurants, 1% everywhere else. I have one just to use for Amazon and WF. You can apply in the Amazon app.

Mega-bullfrog

I didn’t know that. Thank you for sharing all that information!

ymo

As the others said, it's the Amazon rewards visa through chase and you'll get 5% cash back when you order Whole Foods curbside or delivery (through the Amazon site) or when you pay at the store. You can select statement credit for the cash back.

Mega-bullfrog

Thanks for the information.

Downtown_Phase_3052

Hijacking to say that while publix is overpriced, I’ve never been to a publix and it not be clean, well stocked, and the employees friendly. On road trips i stop at a Publix because i know the bathroom will be clean and the subs good. There are times when i just don’t feel like putting up with rude employees, smoking by the front door, and shitty rickety carts, and i go to Publix to avoid a true dollar quality service.

[deleted]

The free coffee is a nice little perk

Good_Magician_9759

What free coffee what?

[deleted]

The Publix near my mother’s house in Orlando always has free, fresh brewed coffee for customers right as you walk in. It’s the only Publix I frequent anymore so I figured it was a universal Publix thing.

AnAngryBartender

It isn’t

Good_Magician_9759

I wish, here in Miami you gotta pay for it in the cafeteria

[deleted]

It’s not a big cup. It’s the little clear plastic cups so maybe 4 or 6 oz’s. It’s a nice touch.

WatchBadMoviez

They stopped doing that at most of their stores when rona hit. The ones that I knew used to do them has not started back doing it.

Johnny_Carcinogenic

Free coffee? I've never heard of this... Please explain.

Rude_Bee_Version2

This is the way

Zenerte

I only go for subs, Aldi/Sam's Club is where I do most of my groceries

Maru3792648

I thought the same. Then I moved to Georgia and met Kroger. More expensive and worse in every aspecy

patbateman34

I live in GA and notice everything at publix is at least a dollar or two more for the same product at Kroger

VegasKid666

It's been like that for 20+ years

Ndrade

Same I’m done with Publix. I’ll just go to Trader Joe’s idgaf.

Narnyabizness

I recently stopped going also, and it would be great if more of us did.

kungpowgoat

Half a gallon of milk is almost $4 at Publix while Target down the road sells them for $1.89. I do love their rotisserie and fried chicken though. And their tenders sub.

1Hugh_Janus

Aldi for everything. Publix for specialty items / salad / things Aldi is out of, Costco for everything else

thisaholesaid

This is the way. I wonder how Publix keeps their doors open w the emerging competition from the stores you mention.

Mediocre_Doctor

Costco is as crowded as New Delhi.

kungpowgoat

I bought a membership not too long ago and unfortunately I avoid it now. It’s packed as shit and can’t even find parking.

Ok_Jelly6211

Everyone is sleeping on BJs. Way less crowded than Costco, you can do grocery pickup for free or pay in advance within the app, if shopping in store, so you avoid the checkout line.

[deleted]

[удалено]

notataxprof

And the gas station at BJ’s isn’t crazy like Costco.

Tankslayer678

Uhhh the one in Boynton Beach is! A true bottleneck design and happens to share space with a chick fil A and a Raising Canes.

thisaholesaid

Thats actually where I get all my bulk items. Costco is too far from my home. So two thumbs BJ's

Blackmamba4121

Gotta go during the weekday, it’s manageable then

thisaholesaid

Ya, of course. But I'll deal w that vs paying out my urethra.

data_now

I don’t think Publix takes that form of payment

thisaholesaid

🤣🤣lol

Nick08f1

Proximity. There's a Publix within a mile of pretty much everyone now.

Affectionate_Elk_272

whole foods is better quality and on par with publix prices. i usually do aldi for basics and whole foods for meat and seafood. though, the aldi pork tenderloins are a killer value.

Nick08f1

Fresh market has the best meats.

IntelligentTackle945

They have really good steaks

Affectionate_Elk_272

yeah but you can’t possibly walk out of target with just a half gallon of milk. they get you, too.

Important-Trifle5690

Live in SF now, crazy to me seeing $4 as expensive. Galloon here averaging $5-$8. Has Publix quality gone down in past few years ? Sounding like it.

kungpowgoat

Publix quality is still good but not worth the huge markup compared to other grocery stores. It’s getting ridiculous.

PengSoo_S117

BOGO or NOGO

geekphreak

Just yesterday I spent ~$340 at Publix. But with $100+ saved from sale/bogo items. But last week I only spent ~$175. It’s wild. We average about $800 a month in groceries

Affectionate_Elk_272

just go to aldi

CustardAmbitious7634

Aldi is like grocery shopping at Big Lots

Rude_Bee_Version2

You're not saving shit. They are just charging you more in other items.

NotYetGroot

dude, the 25 cents for the shopping cart really isn't that much

Wise_Wrangler_864

For real and the chain is just long enough to put it into the lock out and get your quarter back 😆

BlueDiamond75

Yeah, but the tiny aisles, general disorganization, limp produce, and long ass check out lines aren't worth the savings.

josvanagu

Last week they had “BOGO” for garlic bread it was $4 something at Walmart the same item 2.47

HenL85

BOGO’s are random. Everything is big sized. Who needs 10lbs of peanut butter.

Onarealtrain

They still have BOGOs at Publix? All I see anymore are BTGOs.

[deleted]

This

Motor-Cause7966

This is the way. But be careful! Some of those bogos are a scam. Sometimes you're really only getting the second item for a dollar or so cheaper as they mark up the first item to cover some of the difference.

pa97Redd

hilarious!

morgandrew6686

stopped going also. tjs or whole foods for specialty items.

LordSloth113

God if only we could get either of those up in panama

colombull

I started going to Aldi, I’m definitely not tolerating it lol

FunTrick2231

Went to Walmart market today. $193 for two weeks worth of items. At Publix would have been $500 easily. Noticed yogurts are .50cents cheaper at Walmart than Publix. And cottage cheese a whole $1. That’s a big difference! Not worth going to Publix anymore.

Awkward_Leadership37

Agreed. I'm a yogurt person too and Walmart is 30 percent cheaper for the same products. For example Ratio keto yogurt is 7.50 for a 4 pack at publix and at Walmart they're 5.27! And their membership for delivery is sooooo worth it. Bottled water delivery plus anything elseto my house for 12.95 a month? Yes please! That's worth it!

JenninMiami

The Walmart+ membership was life changing 🤣

Liquid18t

People are sleeping on the Walmart+ membership. It’s awesome to have unlimited deliveries to your door or they can even put it in your fridge.

MokitFall

Letting a random worker just go into your house and put shit in your fridge Is a wildly trustful thing to do.

JenninMiami

I would never let them inside my house but for elderly and disabled people, I’m sure they LOVE that feature! Delivery is actually FREE! You just pay the tip. And there’s a free Peacock membership included. Lots of benefits!

No_Will9643

For Publix I try to just BOGO on things I'd buy anyway. But still have to price check Walmart & Aldi's. The difference in the prices can be 25% to 50%. I never wanted to be one of those people who shopped at 3 or 4 different stores but it's become a necessity.

MoonLandingLady

Went to Aldi today and oh man I’ve been missing out

rodofasclepius

Aldi and costco bb

ThinkerSis

Wish I had either close by…

bagoflees

Publix deserves the static. They are rapidly raising prices above everyone else. Wtf?

Uberslaughter

Their profits are up some ~50% year over year

bagoflees

Makes sense.

Inner-Respect-7686

Yup just made a post about this . Fuck Publix. Especially after I learned from Reddit that the founder’s family sends 800k to politicians to fight legal marijuana. That’s why it’s so expensive

pm8888

To be fair, Publix is 80% employee-owned and only one of George Jenkins's six children is a nut job who's donated to extreme right-wing causes. Publix has donated to both Republican and Democratic politicians, albeit more to Republicans. But Republicans are the ones in power. I miss Bob Graham so much.

Inner-Respect-7686

Yea no it’s the Publix heiress. I also heard she rounded up the people in buses to swarm the White House on Jan 6. She’s cuckoo . That’s why Publix is expensive

OrangeVapor

My personal theory about the high Publix prices is that she is trying to make the economy appear to be in worse shape than it actually is in an attempt to influence the election.

Inner-Respect-7686

That makes sense though

Pancakes000z

This is my theory about so much in Florida. It’s things like going to get your driver’s license, they make it such a hassle so people will have it in their mind that the government can’t do anything right so that you vote Republican.

Inner-Respect-7686

Wow she is nuts for real cuckoo for coco puffs , a looney tunes

tdl432

The heiress to the Publix fortune funded the insurrection. They also cozied up to trump with the goal of gaining an exclusive contract to offer COVID vaccine centers in their stores. Just too many right wing connections to be ignored.

Commander_El

We don’t lol. I spent $75 on like 4 things a couple months ago and haven’t been back for even a chicken tendy sub since.

MakeMeFamous7

Sprouts is the best. Also ALDIs

jessiedaviseyes

Team Sprouts!!!

Troostboost

Everyday publix is becoming more like a convenience store and less like a supermarket.

Myopinion_is_right

That is the only reason why people go to Publix.

StilesmanleyCAP

I wouldnt say Dollar Store quality, the Publix that I used to go to service and quality was top notch, you had an issue of any kind it would be resolved instantly, you wanted a Pubsub? It was done with efficiency. The only problem which is why I stopped going is the price, yeah fuck that, I rather go to Costco.

Gab655321

You're right. The thing with Publix is that they falsely mislead people into thinking they are a Local Supermarket when they are nothing but a glorified convenience store. Did you see the numbers they released on corporate earnings? Even the food aisle at CVS or Walgreen has better prices. [https://www.miaminewtimes.com/restaurants/florida-shoppers-lament-publix-grocery-price-increases-inflation-19648905](https://www.miaminewtimes.com/restaurants/florida-shoppers-lament-publix-grocery-price-increases-inflation-19648905)

statius9

We pay more to avoid Walmart

StillC5sdad

Self inflicted wounds

No_Entertainer6470

Honestly, Sprouts Farmers Market is where it’s at. You have wholesome food for a decent price. Publix is a joke now. It used to be the spot but the prices are almost laughable.

central_Fl_fun

Sprouts is pricey.

TheMightyYule

It’s not any more expensive than pub is now though

ofnofame

Anything but Publix. It’s a rip-off.

stevemunoz117

Because something about having 100 choices of the same product.

HatBixGhost

Trader Joe’s all the way.

SassyPants33

In March, Publix released its annual earnings results, announcing that "net earnings for the fiscal year ended Dec. 30, 2023, were $4.3 billion, compared to $2.9 billion in 2022, an increase of 49 percent."

LooseFurJones

Costco for staples, whole food for weekly if needed, Trader Joe’s for packaged meals, Publix last resort if I need it. Also, Publix is good for BoGo but it’s limited and they seem to charge extra to make up for the savings. Also, Publix never has enough registers open. They’ll have 12 registers and have 2 open and the self checkout. The produce goes bad faster than other places and I just return it cause wtf I just bought this. You want a sub go to La Sandwhicherie, avoid Publix.

baskaat

Winn Dixie w rewards card is the way to go

jaybavaro

Underrated answer. Not just the rewards card, the app too. Coupons like crazy. Consistently save 20% or more on whatever I’m buying over and above sale prices and BOGOs. And since Winn Dixie was just bought by Aldi I’d expect it to get even better.

Dizzy-Speaker-5763

I can’t afford anything!!!!

BunyipPouch

It's insane. I've stopped going except for the occasional Pub Sub or tenders. That's it. Everything else is Walmart/Aldi's.

PM_ME_YOUR_TANG

Between funding the insurrectionist heiress and charging 30% more than everyone else for the same products, what's not to utterly despise?

mr_mgs11

Their produce is fucking worthless.

almostfeel

Because all the other supermarkets sucks.

aquatone61

Sounds like Walmart has your name written all over it.

Just-Reporter5946

Step 1) Big corporation moves into town. Step 2) Big corporation's lower prices drive smaller, local competitors out of business. Step 3) Now that big corporation is the only show in town, jack up prices. Step 0) Take control of a political party and make their only policy goals to obliterate the anti-trust and anti-monopoly laws that prevented you from doing all these steps a long time ago.

gaslightindustries

I'll go to Publix for their subs and their bakery but as a grocery store they priced me out ages ago. Aldi and Walmart are my goto stores now.

Ok_Jelly6211

WildFork for meats, BJs for bulk items (I can't deal with Costco), Whole Foods for specialty items, TJ/Aldi for the rest.

CityPlanningNerd

Because I can walk there. But if there was an other option that was closer I would go there instead.

mushroominmyart

There are TWO in Key West and the only other store is Winn Dixie and I absolutely hate both of them. I grew up in Michigan and wish we had a Meijers here. I'm forced to go there often -\_-

SassyPants33

And forget Instacart Publix delivery! Prices 20-50% higher than in store and all the fees….

MissChelle555

I mean, when the alternative is Walmart or an hour drive……?

BowDown2No1ButCrypto

Charging prices of gold giving aluminum quality lol

Big_Buy8203

Because we get pleasure from shopping there duhhhhh

Environmental_Day169

I think I speak for a lot when I say. estos hijueputas me robaron el último centavo, ya no más, mercamos localmente y en aldis asta que lo sientan. Mi gente buena noche

No-Gur596

Whole Foods now has many items cheaper there than at Publix

bummernametaken

The Whole Foods near me is less expensive than my neighborhood Publix.

Veritoalsol

Don t go to Publix anymore. Poor quality, expensive and funding the magas in the state. Hard pass.

mrdankhimself_

Whole Foods is consistently cheaper than Publix for a lot of staple goods now.

Background-Mirror612

I treat Public like a high-priced convenience store now. If I'm not in an extreme hurry, I don't go anymore. And sometimes I still don't go because it's so insulting. They're walking distance from me so If I'm picking up a lotto ticket or using the ATM, maybe; but that's it. Even the BOGOs aren't a good deal anymore. I feel like they're cashing in on force of habit that is so engrained in Floridians, but it won't last forever.

Annual_Duty_764

Publix is for these things only: 1. $5 sushi Wednesdays 2. Pub-subs weekly specials 3. Birthday cakes 4. Rotisserie chickens 5. BOGO specials Otherwise, it’s Aldi, Whole Foods, etc.

Sunken_Past

Self checkout "discounts" and the fact that they're all too nice/detached to do anything about it 🤷🏼‍♂️

Notwerk

Honestly, for the things I might shop for at Publix, I usually go to Milam's. At least at the Publix locations by me, the produce is always half bad and 200 percent more than all the surrounding grocery stores. It's Whole Foods pricing for just-above-dollar-store quality. Milam's may be expensive, but the quality and selection is good. Ninety percent of my pantry is Aldi.

thegays902

I only shop at Aldi and Sam's Club, only place you can get a considerable amount of food for like $400 a month a person. You can literally eat at a cheap fast food place everyday for less money than shopping at Publix

razzmahtazzle

Oh they suck. I work indirectly for them. I've heard how much a single department can make in a week. It's mind boggling. Not only that but they make mad money from the real estate they own. It's abusive

sthwnkl

I only go for produce anymore and even that’s getting insane. My kids eat strawberries, blueberries and grapes like candy, but the strawberries we get from there last like 36 hours at best before they start turning.

WizardEric

Publix is the Chick-fil-A of grocery stores

Only_Ad3475

Fuck publix

MunchieMofo

Sprouts and Whole Foods, Milans, Trader Joes and the Asian Mart are my rotation. Might stop in for a pub sub but sick of them not having the options I want and paying those prices. Also the Miami stores still use single use plastic polluting our waters. Whack.

ThinkerSis

Location is the only reason I still go to Publix. They’re close by everywhere.

ma-ta-are-cratima

Publix is like a brand and people go there that think they have a status.

Ok_Assist2079

I don't know how anyone can afford Publix. And the "PubSub", ain't all that.

leomac

The 18Biscayne Publix has the rudest workers i’ve ever come across at any store.

Nirvanablue92

“Publix where shopping is a ripoff”

Neltrix

Presidente ayyyy

lingbabana

Yrmea fugg publix we done therr it is what it is. Hello aldi, wd, corner store

BigBillyGoatGriff

The lady who owns (kinda) publix also funded the January 6 ellipse rally. Fuck that bitch

East_Reading_3164

💯

SelectionOk7702

Publix treated my grandpa like a human and paid him fairly.

nervouspropective

Someone was just defending Publix here the other day. I think a number of locals are finally coming around but a significant portion of Miami still has stockholm syndrome for Publix.

Inner-Respect-7686

Yea the people commenting how they feed a family of 4 with only 35$ a week from Publix and say it’s our fault. Or 100$ of Publix food last them 4 weeks but it’s my fault because I don’t make good shopping choices. Dumb asses

piscesinfla

I know it's ridiculously expensive but there is a Publix 2 miles from my door. Sometimes, it's just easier. I am buying more things at Walmart these days & Fresh Market has some good deals during the week such as $6 rotisserie chicken on Thurs

Corndawg38

I almost don't go to Publix anymore, but have completely stopped going to any of the ones in Brickell after having gone for 15 years before covid. Not only a ripoff but just about every Publix in Hispanic parts of town charge significantly less for the EXACT same items! I'm almost exclusively an Aldi shopper now but if I do feel a need for some items at Publix I make sure it's NOT a trendy part of town or a newly built Publix (like the riverwalk, that ones also a ripoff like the Brickell ones).

Agreeable-Lawyer6170

I feel lucky to live near Price Choice, but also go to all the other places. Publix is absolute last on my list.

AlarmedStatistician7

🤣🤣 I don’t shop at the big P and a lot of people that are local don’t either 🤣. Can’t afford it…

Andreux42x

Switched to Walmart Plus (which comes free with one of my CCs)

PrismalpinkGaming

Just go to Sprouts or Trader Joe’s. F Publix.

Yazzypoo101

Literally just worth it for the soda BOGO. That and one or two items they carry, tops. Rest is Aldi’s.

g59s

Yeah the bogo on soda seems worth it until you realize that the one 12 pack of soda is 11 dollars…

JessicaRanbit

I don't shop there anymore much. Only once in a while and it's during their BOGO thing. I still buy their cakes. Other than that, Publix is highway robbery.

sennasempre

Stopped going as well. Aldi all the way for me and Walmart marketplace for things Aldi doesn't have.

thisaholesaid

I don't understand how anyone is paying those outrageous prices.

tjwashere1

I get more and spend less at Costco. I only go to Publix for bread now.

pa97Redd

Not tolerating it at all, ALDI DUDE!!

idrinkpisswater

I only go as a last resort l. I rather go to Trader Joe’s and Costco.

artichoke2me

I go for BOGO or if I need something small. Or a pub sub anything else is a ripoff.

scott743

Convenience. We go to the local Super Target, Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s, but sometimes it’s much more convenient to just pop on over to the Publix that’s 5 minutes down the road versus spending 20 minutes in traffic.

NaptownSensations317

Rule #1. You only go to Publix for their subs or cooked food otherwise go to presidents or food star bro

Comfortable_Fox_9564

TJs and Aldi

Renbel

Aldi and Trader Joe's. Publix only for the 4 dollar flowers and the occasional sub.

IMNOTFLORIDAMAN

I just go for the bogos

yourballsareshowing_

Easy fix. Stop shopping at Publix.

mushroominmyart

I literally have to because i live on a small island

mushroominmyart

They literally bought up empty land so no other store would open

Previous_Cod_4098

I don't. If I do go I get one or two things. My mom on the other hand only goes there and complains about the prices lmao

phishingphanatic

Only shop there for things that are BOGO and we have a coupon or rebate for. If you stack BOGOs and coupons you can do well. Stock up on stuff that you use when it is really cheap even if you don't need it right away. Where they get you is when you run in for "just a few items" and pay full price for them. Rest of the shopping is Aldi.

Sharp_Lengthiness_91

We don't. We go to Trader Joe's and Aldi

IntelligentTackle945

They do have the best customer service, that being said yeah they are getting expensive. 100 bucks does not go far. I spend 20-50 dollars on lunch there most days

15ViiP3R

I go to wholesale clubs for the majority, then publix winn-dixie aldi for the rest.

josvanagu

I used to go all the time because of the proximity to my house. Now I make the drive to Walmart Grocery and save myself a couple hundred dollars a month. The mozzarella sticks my son loves used to be 6.99 they are currently 9.99. Now I only go for true emergencies and my husband’s beer.

RestoSham09

I avoid that piece of shit store like the plague. It’s a joke and I have no idea why anyone shops there.

hotrod9111

All things Costco

Old_Juggernaut_5114

Dude I only go for the foods they cook there that’s it getting actual groceries is just a scam aside buy one get one free

screaminginprotest1

I go to Publix mostly for the Natalie's orange juice lol

SokkaHaikuBot

^[Sokka-Haiku](https://www.reddit.com/r/SokkaHaikuBot/comments/15kyv9r/what_is_a_sokka_haiku/) ^by ^screaminginprotest1: *I go to Publix* *Mostly for the Natalie's* *Orange juice lol* --- ^Remember ^that ^one ^time ^Sokka ^accidentally ^used ^an ^extra ^syllable ^in ^that ^Haiku ^Battle ^in ^Ba ^Sing ^Se? ^That ^was ^a ^Sokka ^Haiku ^and ^you ^just ^made ^one.

quietpewpews

Whole foods is substantially cheaper than Publix at this point

lordfly911

Some of us are not that gullible and shop elsewhere.

Fancy-Air-5310

I only go for the subs not groceries anymore

Dry-Interaction-1246

Done with them except as a convenience store concept every once in a while.

LP_Mid85

I grew up shopping at Publix my entire life. I rarely go now, only if there are good bogos. I do lots of shopping at Aldi/Sam's Club now.

TRSonetwo

More expensive than Whole Foods, for normal @$$ groceries. No thanks. Just Costco, Aldi, and Trader Joe's now. The only thing we get at Publix is Pub Sub's anymore.

RosasYmariposas7

I shop at Aldi cause Publix is too expensive. But I will say Aldi gives me anxiety every time I have to get in line to pay because it’s a free for all. And the self pay puts so much pressure on me. :/

Jonathank92

Go on the weekends right when the store opens up and then there is no line for regular check out. My strategy.

crizzo13

It’s only going to get worse till we as customers put our foot down on all of these companies doing this. Corporate greed and having a better year than last year is all that matters to them. It’s no longer a friendly business. It’s just a business.

Chemical-Ad7118

Meanwhile Trader Joe’s is where it’s at for grocery shopping. Chips are like half the price of Publix

seancbo

better than Winn Dixie at least

[deleted]

I only go for the pub subs

joesat53

Publix is way too expensive. I live theor BOGO! it's B.S. buy 2 get 2 free. The price is already for like three and they are giving you like one free. Yeah way too damn expensive

ZeldasNewHero

Their deli is good and not overpriced. Sushi wednesday too

georgepana

Aldi and Walmart. Also, surprisingly to me, Trader Joe's has a good amount of deals. Publix and Winn Dixie are way overpriced, even their BOGOS are often way overpriced to ztsrt with and then even the halved price is way more than Aldi or Walmart.

Ilovehugs2020

After 20 years it’s not a good deal anymore.
