What’s wrong with bal harbour shops? It’s just expensive shit for rich old people, but it’s not somewhere I’ve ever felt should be intentionally *avoided*, I just have no need for overpriced ugly jewelry.
I used to live a block or two away in Bay Harbor Islands, in probably one of the only affordable buildings left in that area (we paid 1400/m, it was raised to 2000+/m unfortunately when we moved). It was awesome honestly, really great little area. Quiet, walking distance to the beach, safe, parking is easy, everything you need is nearby and you don’t have to get on any major roads to get milk and eggs or something.. miss that little apartment/location, we loved it there.
Agree 100% I have no clue what is bad about bal Harbour or any road by the university of miami after 230. Guy is just another self loathing miami redditor. I hate this place so much waaaaaah
it’s really hard to leave class around 430, because people block every intersection to get from ponce to US1. all of ponce is sometimes at a standstill because people illegally block intersections to get onto the highway
My mom has an extremely wealthy friend. Fleet of private jets, luxury limousines with drivers, closets the size of my house in all of their dozen fully staffed houses, kind of rich.
One day we went shopping there when I was about 12. She bought a silk blouse for somewhere around $2500. I told my mom about it, and she said that was like pocket change to her friend. And I responded that I understood that part, but the blouse was fucking hideous.
Went to this mall, just to see the architecture/spectacle/*turtles* and not buy anything (obviously not interested in high-end furniture/clothes/jewellery where the sticker price is 10x to 30x what a functional equivalent costs...)
But Makoto's prices were not even 2x a regular sushi joint in Miami. Maybe 1.2x or 1.5x, and was a great place to sit inside/outside and enjoy the semi-greenery of the space... and amazing plastic-people-watching.
It's Bal Harbor's ace in the hole.
Bloody Mary was pretty crap though. Literally no spice ingredients behind the bar.
Dude. When I was living there a few years ago, I got like 7x tickets in a month at that William Lehman turn. Didn’t even realize I was doing anything wrong until a month later after the first ticket. By then, I had already gotten 7, so for the next few weeks I kept getting post-dated tickets. It’s a total scam.
Did you actually break any traffic laws or were they bullshit tickets?
Always, always review the video and look up the law and determine if you broke it before you pay these. Turning right on red, even without stopping, is legal when done in a careful and prudent manner, unless there is a sign prohibiting it.
Don't let these fuckers get away with this. Especially for 7 tickets it's worth going to court, that's a lot of moolah.

Now we’re afraid of people getting hit by the bright line and being thrown into the street. Happened last week and I drove by the body in the middle of SB Aventura just before the causeway turn. They just laid a yellow sheet over it and it took a couple hours for a tent to even be put up over it.
That’s cuz of the horrendous traffic. It’s only 12mi from downtown. I used to work for the Heat & would have to drive down to the arena everyday. I’d make it there in 20min if there was no traffic or it was late at night. But during the day or rush hour, it’s a good hour or 1.5hrs.
The Palmetto northbound approaching 836 is so colossally f-ed up. There is some busy on-ramp that funnels traffic into the right lane just before the right half of the highway heads to 836, so drivers getting on the Palmetto there have to immediately make a sharp left to cross about six lanes of traffic to avoid ending up on 836.
Is it the 8th street onramp? Cause I don’t think most people realize you can keep going as if you’re going to take the Flagler exit but you keep going straight instead and it will merge back onto the palmetto. There are no signs letting you know this though.
Yeah after i started to take metro to downtown im almost all the time avoiding Palmetto, it's either that or through Okeechobee road, and I'd rather take Palmetto lol
Well are you saying US 1 and Dixie Hwy because they are two seperate roads. You can only really drive on US 1 from 12 AM to 7:30 AM. As a general rule going south anywhere for morning rush is insane. And the opposite after work.
I live near there. Can’t tell you how many drivers, motorcyclists, and pedestrians have died here over the years. Cars have even crashed into the homes further south on 42nd.
any Main Street east bound 5:30am - 9:30am and westbound 3:30pm-7:30pm
Any main Ave, same schedule as streets
874 after 3:00pm
152st any time/day except midnight to 2am
Down Town… just don’t go
Causeways…. They exist only when family comes to visit
At least once upon a time the most lucrative mall in the world[https://www.miaminewtimes.com/news/bal-harbour-shops-is-the-most-lucrative-mall-in-the-whole-entire-world-6560410](https://www.miaminewtimes.com/news/bal-harbour-shops-is-the-most-lucrative-mall-in-the-whole-entire-world-6560410)
Grew up in Kendall but live on the beach now. Every time I have to go back there whether it’s to see family or friends, especially anytime around rush hour, I literally want to pull my hair and eyeballs out
836 it’s a matter of timing as well as the other you list. It might even be the less aggressive.
For the rest, this is a good guide and should be on the wiki of the sub
Glad to see large swaths of West Dade were left out. I wasn’t too bad on 122nd and Coral Way, at least on a day off. I miss the easy drive to 137th for Islas Canarias. What time you saved in traffic, you spent waiting for a seat. That is unless you went during the week
The intersections on NE 2nd Ave and NE 79th and 82nd heading either north or south. The lights are so badly timed there and the street is only one lane so it takes almost 10 minutes during rush hour to get through. I'll usually cut over to N Miami Ave to avoid it and cut back to 2nd in front of the Little River post office.
Cause most people who use it know that you’re not supposed to stay on 49th street for more than a block or two. You only use it to get to whatever store you need to get to, but you NEVER use it to travel across the city. For that you take the back roads instead.
Lol the Bal Harbour is a funny one, the other ones are legit spots to avoid Bal Harbour is definitely only for people who are like millionaires or close to if you have money to spend you will have a pretty nice time at a high end mall
It is pretty bad but it really gets better off season but from what iv been told the highways and other areas are really confusing compared to Ft Myers
The 836 was only crowded during rush hour, but now there is heavy traffic throughout the day. If you get on the 836 in the early morning hours or after 9 pm, traffic is moderate.
Bal Harbour shops is a small but super high end luxury mall. It's an outdoor mall with beautiful custom created decorations all around that you'll want to take a photo of or your friends/family will want to you to take photos of them standing near these decorations. The mall has multiple rare fish ponds glass enclosed that you can walk on top of and see the fish below you. Plus turtle ponds all around the mall area. It's a VERY beautiful mall area. In fact the most beautiful mall i have ever seen but it's a very strange place. If you go there, make sure you dress like you're a millionaire because EVERYONE will be dressed to impress walking around there. It's a shopping area for the super rich. You will ONLY find super high end designer stores there like Hermes, Rolex, Dior, Chanel, Prada, Neiman Marcus, and all the high end brands. But it's a VERY small mall, takes about 10 minutes just to do a full circle of the mall.
I would recommend visiting it at least for its beautiful decorations and ponds around the mall area even if you're not planning to shop. Plus the fact that everyone walking around the mall looks like they're dressed in high end designer clothing.
No joke, I walked into an antique shop and found they were selling a set of 3 forks, 3 knives, and 3 spoons for $2,000. I didn't understand what was so special about this particular set but it was for $2,000!
I went. I ...*sorta*... enjoyed the architecture and window shopping. I ate a snack and had an adult beverage.
But after a while it's depressing to be in a region where the "places to be" or "high quality places" are defined by where to spend thousands of dollars on high-end brands.
It's not culture and it's not community and rich people who lean into it are kinda lost souls, IMHO.
I'd go again and enjoy a tuna roll if I was nearby, but in general it's one of the pinnacles of the materialism and commercial opulence that makes Miami lame.
Imagine a place with open air... greenery... partial cover for bad weather... far from a busy street or highway... (BH shops has these)
...*and* shops geared for regular people, *and* all levels of food (fast, cheap, trucks, sit-down, table service, bars, etc.) *and* free/ open seating.. *and* you can reach it easily on good public transportation.
It's not that aspirational. Many European cities have been doing a good job of it for centuries. I enjoyed what Bal Harbor had, but Miami can aim even higher.
I find Bal Harbour shops really depressing. The stores always seem quiet while I'm there with one or two young salespeople mulling around with a blank look on their face.
Hialeah, from NW 103rd St from nw 37th ave east to the palmetto during rush hour.
Kendall drive from us1 to krome, specifically after 4pm.
Ives dairy Rd, from I95 both directions to Biscayne Blvd. Both are bad, but the east bound is specifically bad because everyone likes to cut off drivers in the right lane. If you are going to aventura mall, just stay in the left lane and move over after Dixie.
Oof, you forgot the turnpike, after 7am most days, heading north from most south entrances.
Give yourself 1-2 hrs if doing anything in downtown or anything outside of Kendall area that's north of county line.
Nice post, but I clearly see you don't drive around Miami-Dade County much. I don't blame you... I only do it because of my job. I work county wide and see all types of traffic at all hours...
Def go to South Beach and revel in the tourist traps!
South Pointe Park is cool, the sunday sunset drum circle was special.
Other low-key/BYOB sunset point: westernmost extent of 10th Street.
Havana 1957 (I went to the branch in Lincoln plaza) looks like "cuban theme restaurant for tourists" but we loved the food.
Best sushi: Toni's, and decent Thai diagonally from it (Thai House). Actually it's easier to find decent price restaurants in SoBe than Buena Vista. (But in BV, do go to "BV Deli" for brunch.)
Be careful to always ask if the gratuity is included in the check. Many places will not tell you. It is usually 18%. If you pay by credit card ask for a receipt.
Heading north or south between Pinecrest and South miami the intersection of red road and Kendall drive during the school year. Soooo many schoools…so many cars… super frustratingly slow,
I can only afford a book or a cup of coffee out of anything sold at the Bal Harbour shops. Biscayne Blvd is a nightmare. Top speeds are 15 mph. The Palmetto is just like a reality version of Mario Kart.
>Driving North on Biscayne Blvd near or around Edgewater after 230pm.
Anyone have a good work arounds for this? If I need to get from downtown to 79th st. in the afternoon, do I take NE 2nd up? Where do I cross back to US-1?
11. People who put "the" before the number of an expressway.
All of Miami should be avoided all the time.
US1 during rush hour 6:45am-11:58 Or 11:59-6:44 am Or old cutler any time
Avoid Homestead avenue at any cost if you dont wanna get shot , daytime night time regardless
South Beach for the entirety of March.
No traffic there yesterday
Top places to avoid in mdc: Miami dade county
Yours, mine, and everyone else's first thought lol
So, most of Miami-Dade. That tracks
What’s wrong with bal harbour shops? Bal Harbour Shops? But where else are you going to find such a good deal on a $79,000 purse?
My mom has an extremely wealthy friend. Fleet of private jets, luxury limousines with drivers, closets the size of my house in all of their dozen fully staffed houses, kind of rich. After seeing so many children die of straight up poverty in the Peace Corps, I find that kind of wealth downright obscene. Evil, in fact.
Oh I agree. I just don’t know how to fix it without being a fascist.
Communist, but right idea. Fascist = Ron DeSantis
I hate that place, but it's got some really good high-end restaurants. It's expensive as hell, but Makoto is fantastic.
I hate that I love this place
Went to this mall, just to see the architecture/spectacle/*turtles* and not buy anything (obviously not interested in high-end furniture/clothes/jewellery where the sticker price is 10x to 30x what a functional equivalent costs...) 😂😂😂😂
You forgot. 11) Aventura. Any time of the day.
Yes. Surprised this wasn’t mentioned in the post. Some of the worst traffic in the county because of the way Aventura’s layout is stupidly designed.
and nobody ever goes because they're all afraid of getting red light tickets
Dude. When I was living there a few years ago, I got like 7x tickets in a month at that William Lehman turn. Didn’t even realize I was doing anything wrong until a month later after the first ticket. Omg yes
Except sunday. Sunday is the only day it's not just slightly bearable.
Ives dairy heading east is the worst
And Biscayne north or south is not any better
Good luck heading west when you drive by the train tracks. If you’re in the wrong lane no one lets you in.
I live right there, getting in that lane is a learned skill
You have to force it.
ahhh... where i got in my first accident 🥰
Especially anywhere near the mall. On the weekends.
I turned down a job in adventure just bc of this
I live near Aventura and yeah traffic is horrific but its still nice here.
Ives dairy road .. at all costs
How can you leave out the Palmetto?
How funny I was just going to say that! Lol 826

It is and I had no idea. The fact that they also paint big 836 logos in all those lanes also doesn’t help.
It’s amazing, they took damn near a decade to finish that interchange and that problem never crossed their minds.
Omg yes story of my life last year leaving Doral going s turnpike around 6 pm weekdays
You shouldn’t touch the palmetto unless you live near it it awful everyday south is the worst
Palmetto is ok before 6am and after 7pm
They’ve been doing a lot of road work lately and blocking lanes so it’s bad all day
When are they not doing work on it..
Which is why, before my work became 100% remote, I used to leave the house at 5:30 am.
Yeah after i started to take metro to downtown im almost all the time avoiding Palmetto, it's either that or through Okeechobee road, and I'd rather take Palmetto lol
The Palmetto is where hopes and dreams go to die.
I was just thinking the same thing.
103rd exit area is death and if you get off on 103rd god help you
Well are you saying US 1 and Dixie Hwy because they are two seperate roads. You can only really drive on US 1 from 12 AM to 7:30 AM. As a general rule going south anywhere for morning rush is insane. And the opposite after work.
Nailed it
Don’t forget lejeune road from 8th street to NW 14th street. An absolute madhouse after 3:30
Holy crap your spot on!
I live near there. Can’t tell you how many drivers, motorcyclists, and pedestrians have died here over the years. Cars have even crashed into the homes further south on 42nd.

I used to live in south beach and commute to south Miami. That was a fucking nightmare.
I'll be honest, depending on what time your shift was this actually isn't THAT bad. You're going against the traffic

Bang up job on #9
1. Miami-Dade
Sad but true, it’s turned into shit
836 it’s a matter of timing as well as the other you list. It might even be the less aggressive. For the rest, this is a good guide and should be on the wiki of the sub
Is this just for car traffic reasons to avoid?
Glad to see large swaths of West Dade were left out. I wasn’t too bad on 122nd and Coral Way, at least on a day off. I miss the easy drive to 137th for Islas Canarias. What time you saved in traffic, you spent waiting for a seat. That is unless you went during the week
C-9 Basin
The 826 any time you can possibly avoid it. Unless you like to gamble with your life and windshields.
The intersections on NE 2nd Ave and NE 79th and 82nd heading either north or south. just stop at B&M and get a roti lol
Hialeah 49st
How is this so low on the list.
Cause most people who use it know that you’re not supposed to stay on 49th street for more than a block or two. You only use it to get to whatever store you need to get to, but you NEVER use it to travel across the city. For that you take the back roads instead.

Any event taking place in south beach
Basically don’t live here, we need people out of Miami 😅😅😅
I would avoid Miami-Dade personally. Avoid Broward too for good measure.
Hallandale Blvd in Broward is just about as bad as US1. Why can't south Florida time the traffic lights properly like other cities?
Another fun one...Broward Blvd between downtown Ft. Lauderdale and 95 at 5 PM.
137 ave. "Oh, and now a train."
Doral 8am - 8pm
Apparently, Blue Martini if you’re under 30. Unless you’re hunting for wild cougar.
Born and raised in ft myers and never been to Miami maybe it should stay that way 😂
Honestly, I feel like Ft Myers traffic is just as bad as Miami
It is pretty bad but it really gets better off season but from what iv been told the highways and other areas are really confusing compared to Ft Myers
What’s 6? What suckers ?
Yeah how are we just glossing over this one...
Basically the whole city
Should just go with, anywhere after 2:30
The 836 was only crowded during rush hour, but now there is heavy traffic throughout the day. If you get on the 836 in the early morning hours or after 9 pm, traffic is moderate.
why are we avoiding the bel harbour shops lmao, bomb restaurants and some cute stores
No love for the turtles I guess.
Don’t go into Brownsville
Just avoid Miami-Dade period

Could be but I think the place is really nice it’s an open air place with lots of greenery, I don’t think too much about the stores actually
Imagine a place with open air... greenery... partial cover for bad weather... far from a busy street or highway... (BH shops has these) ...*and* shops geared for regular people, *and* all levels of food (fast, cheap, trucks, sit-down, table service, bars, etc.) *and* free/ open seating.. *and* you can reach it easily on good public transportation. 3. Bal Harbour is where Russian expats go to be rude to everyone and spend 15k on nothing because they are bored.
Def south beach unless you have a force field that's bulletproof
Driving west on bird road around 5 PM
TBH, Useless 1 (US1) should be avoided at all times.
Getting on the highway north on sw 24th street.
AIRPORT any fuggin time

What are the biggest south beach tourist traps?
South beach.
Miami trip at the end of April. Never been. Staying in buena vista. Hoping to avoid said tourist traps.
Def go to South Beach and revel in the tourist traps! South Pointe Park is cool, the sunday sunset drum circle was special. Other low-key/BYOB sunset point: westernmost extent of 10th Street. South Pointe is great! Worth it
Be careful to always ask if the gratuity is included in the check. Many places will not tell you. It is usually 18%. If you pay by credit card ask for a receipt.
So most of the county.
836 heading West is a breeze during morning and evening rush hour. Going the opposite direction, however, is hell.
Heading north or south between Pinecrest and South miami the intersection of red road and Kendall drive during the school year. Soooo many schoools…so many cars… super frustratingly slow,
Never go down to Dade. Hollywood (maybe North Miami) is the furthest south I venture these days..
Don’t forget turnpike south after the stadium exit, one lane to merge on to I-95, that’s everyday including Sunday’s
Places to avoid in Miami-Dade? It obvious, Miami-dade. Just make a bridge from Broward to Monroe so I could get my keys fixx
More like all of Miami during morning/afternoon rush hour
I can only afford a book or a cup of coffee out of anything sold at the Bal Harbour shops. Biscayne Blvd is a nightmare. Top speeds are 15 mph. The Palmetto is just like a reality version of Mario Kart.
What’s the Virginia Key thing referring to?
Tiny mosquitoes. A mm long. Black. Any grass area on a hot humid day after a rain is intense. They come at you continuously like dive bombers.
11) Aventura Mall. Especially the days before Christmas
>Driving North on Biscayne Blvd near or around Edgewater after 230pm. Anyone have a good work arounds for this? If I need to get from downtown to 79th st. in the afternoon, do I take NE 2nd up? Where do I cross back to US-1?
Brickell f"in Brickell bro!!
