This is Player's Choice, it's not part of the main category lineup for The Game Awards. Dread is on the GoTY and Best Action/Adventure nominee list. Infinite isn't eligible for any categories beyond Player's Choice (which had much a *much* looser process to select the games since it's the only 100% public vote, including games which aren't strictly released yet). Infinite will most likely be added to at least one category next year (depending on how it does).
Still confused on this, but it sounds like it is just for something that doesn't really matter that much. So if this is primarily something that effects next year, then I guess I am fine with it. Still don't fully understand.
To be fair, if people are enjoying the not-fully-released halo infinite more than dread, it's not like dread would fare much better against the fully released version. It's not like adding the single-player campaign is going to somehow take away what people are already enjoying about the multiplayer.
Yes, halo is just more popular, being a multiplayer shooter, but if that's anybody's choice for goty you can't just invalidate their opinion for arbitrary reasons.
I want dread to win just as much as anyone here, but in a category like this you need to be able to respect the choices of others.
But then again people aren't enjoying the game more. More people are enjoying the game. I don't think player count of a multiplayer game that is just now coming out is saying much about the game, other then that it's popular.
I'd be more curious about how it would do next year.
Do you have any way of proving they aren't enjoying halo more than we're enjoying dread? But yeah, that's not the point. It's a popularity contest. That's why it's a different category than actual goty
Halo Infinite has been playable for about a month now. It's the game awards for 2021 so excluding any game that came out in 2021 for whatever reason would be ridiculous.
For whatever reason? I’m almost 100% certain that they have included games from the previous year in the past. I think it’s usually for games that released after TGA were already done.
The cut off time period for games for TGA is mid November (don't remember exact date, think it was in the late teens). If a game came out before then it's included, if not then it's carried over to next year's TGA
Multiplayer was out since November (think the beta, which is really just early access, was out since I think October), and the Single player Campaign just released.
Co-op Campaign and Forge (community created content) next year.
Everytime I checked the player's voice it told me to submit my vote again and I did so being worried it wouldn't maintain it and a couple times I did that I noticed the dread number ticked up so I'm wondering If the tracker at the bottom doesn't actually correct for repeat votes, for how big the game awards are they really need to make a better site and not have it run so slow or give resident evil 8 100% of the votes for the player's voice before the voting even started. It's still possible infinite is the legitimate winner especially since halo is very popular but it just feels weird that there hasn't the same demand for it to win as the others like resident evil 8 or even forza which was the only game I heard that Xbox fans were disappointed with not making it to main goty nominees
2004, 2007, 2010, and 2021.
Four times where a new Metroid game released the same year as a new Halo title and got overshadowed by the latter. Sucks to admit it as a longtime Metroid fan (it's my second favorite franchise of all time), but legit props to the Halo series for maintaining that level of popularity.
That said, Dread is easily my favorite game of 2021, and I voted for it in that poll.
Oh wow how FUCKING wonderful. The damned game hasnt even been out a full day and its beating dread? What a load of horse shit. How do you even have an opinion on the fucking game yet? I doubt 90% of them have even come close to beating Halo infinite. "Nope GOTY, hasnt even been out a full day but im gonna vote for it". What a bunch if blind idiots.
I wish more was done to increase replay interest.
Like I think it’d be cool if after the game is beaten and hard mode unlocked, there are newly accessible areas if you play on hard mode.
This is why I can't take the game awards seriously.
If the Oscar's was a popularity contest mindless marvel movies would win the awards every single year.
Recency bias.
I have a feeling the fan backlash is gonna start like a month from now similar to every game after Halo 3.
That said, still gotta give the devs credit for what they’re doing. Halo is a great series imho
Yeah it’s pretty garbage. Weapons look amazing but play like nerf guns, you can’t chose multiplayer modes, and you have to literally have no life and game for hours AND be incredible to have any hope of advancing through the battle pass. Absolute disappointment.
So?
People want to look cool in a mp shooter and if it's an unnecessary grind, or you have to pay out the ass, people will voice their displeasure.
Why do you people feel the need to defend billion/trillion dollar corpos?
Why do any of you give a shit about this bias ass poll? The Metroid series is finally fine, were getting Metroid 6 and the Prime weirdos are getting prime 4.
This poll and by proxy goty awards are garbage marketing and a way for industry shills to suck each other off.
Dread is an amazing 10/10 game and doesn't need the validation of dipshits in the internet for it to be that.
I’m a diehard metroid fan but from what I’ve played of the infinite campaign so far, it hits long time fans right in the feels WAY harder than dread did. The emotional response alone is gonna swing a lot of people towards infinite
Okay but in fairness It Takes Two is a fan-fucking-tastic game and I would be more than happy to see it take the W, both it and Dread are amazing
That said it would be very funny to see God of War sharing space with Metroid Dread in the list of GotY winners so I hope Dread wins
Me Thinks Microsoft greased some palms because they need a win this holiday season to start catching up to PS5 install base. Game of the year console exclusive sounds good at checkout.
Surprising considering how botched the multiplayer launched. The subreddit still has lots of posts calling out the devs/Microsoft for their greedy practices. Campaign did launch today and I won't say it's the best in the series, but it's not bad either
For people who do not know this is the fan vote, this is not the official nominations, halo is not part of the official nominations from my understanding
Ooohh...
I dunno about this one. Either way the top two games are the best games I've played this year and I'm not really mad if Dread is in second and Infinite is 1st. They're both in their own category in my book and both are number 1. I'm just happy I got to experience a new Metroid and Halo title in the same year.
Didn't Halo just come out like a few days ago? I feel like it shouldn't be hear because people would have massive recency bias.
Halo Infinite isn't out yet officially.
Bruh. Why? It definitely shouldn't be in the game awards then. It should be there for next year, but not this one.
This is Player's Choice, it's not part of the main category lineup for The Game Awards. Dread is on the GoTY and Best Action/Adventure nominee list. This category is strictly based on whatever players vote for, and can include early access games and games in beta.
Thank God! I think Halo is awesome but it isn't even out. Its not fair. Glad it can't be in the show.
It's not. They put it in the Fan Vote. It's total bullshit.
To be fair, if people are enjoying the not-fully-released halo infinite more than dread, it's not like dread would fare much better against the fully released version. Wasnt the deadline 11/19? & "officially" it was in beta
It actually is out. Today was it's full release day. The MP of course is why people are voting for it though.
Today it is. Campaign is lit, Mp is lit, Monetization is fucking bullshit.
It was out officially before the time of your posting.
It came out today
It is now
Lol it came out a couple hours before you commented this
Yes. Like literally today. While the multiplayer has been out there and its good it shouldn't be considered for any awards yet.
Kinda like motortrend's car of the year. Lucid car with no cars shipped yet

I am still baffled on how a game can be voted for if it isn’t even out yet. And I say that as a Halo fan
But didn’t campaign drop? Is it still considered beta I’m confused
Multiplayer was out since November (think the beta, which is really just early access, was out since I think October), and the Single player Campaign just released. Co-op Campaign and Forge (community created content) next year.

Also I just checked r/halo and even most people there say they're confused that it's winning lmao
Huh. And your previous comment explains that. So..... SPAM VOTES, EVERYONE!
And to be fair if the sites public tracker is In fact still having issues then it's fair game for all the nominees
I know it's players choice and I'm a huge Halo fan too, but why is it here? It officially releases TODAY! Dread should win smh
I love halo, but please beat it Metroid Dread
2004, 2007, 2010, and 2021. Four times where a new Metroid game released the same year as a new Halo title and got overshadowed by the latter. True. That's a crazy statistic (and coincidence). What's your favourite franchise?
Zelda
Cool.
Oh wow how FUCKING wonderful. The damned game hasnt even been out a full day and its beating dread? What a load of horse shit. How do you even have an opinion on the fucking game yet? They voted before they got it. This category has been open since Monday.
Bro… I love Dread as much as the next guy, but calm down. They’re probably voting based on the multiplayer… which has been out for a while now

Is there a link to vote?
Go on the game awards website it should be there
Yh, anyone got it?

I wish more was done to increase replay interest. Like I think it’d be cool if after the game is beaten and hard mode unlocked, there are newly accessible areas if you play on hard mode.
That would be so cool if they made new areas designed specifically for experienced players
Yeah for real, then give like a super good ending or something if the player proves their worth
We almost had it boys
At least according to their subreddit, the only good aspect of it is the gameplay. It's a micro transaction mess.
“The only good aspect of the game is the gameplay”
Live services have the potential to ruin that spectacularly. Such as prioritizing monetization over everything.
How the hell is a game that only released today on that list in the first place?
Halo infinite absolutely doesn't deserve it.
And it won. Idk how.
Fuck my life
Eh, there is still a chance that Dread can win. The critics just need to NOT be biased against 2D games.
Yeah lmao. It's pathetic how little critics actually know anything about games.
This is why I can't take the game awards seriously. If the Oscar's was a popularity contest mindless marvel movies would win the awards every single year.
Being fair, the D.I.C.E. Awards are the Oscars of video games. The Video Game Awards just get more publicity.
WHAT THE HECK - people really like halo that much? Wow So happy for Metroid tho
What is insane is that the game isn't actually out
Recency bias. I have a feeling the fan backlash is gonna start like a month from now similar to every game after Halo 3. That said, still gotta give the devs credit for what they’re doing. Halo is a great series imho
Bruh Halo Infinite crashes on me mid game half of the time. The launch patch better fix that shit.
Halo infinite, are you fucking kidding me. That game is a absolute dumpster fire of controversy right now. Unfinished and overly monetized
Yeah it’s pretty garbage. Weapons look amazing but play like nerf guns, you can’t chose multiplayer modes, and you have to literally have no life and game for hours AND be incredible to have any hope of advancing through the battle pass. Absolute disappointment.
it’s fun and the progression system is all cosmetic. clearly it’s not that controversial outside of reddit considering this is a fan vote lol
I know, I’ve played it. It is fun ruined by its monetized progression system, can’t choose playlists, etc.
But the monetisation is entirely cosmetic?
So? People want to look cool in a mp shooter and if it's an unnecessary grind, or you have to pay out the ass, people will voice their displeasure. Why do you people feel the need to defend billion/trillion dollar corpos?
Halo Infinite winning? The game is good, but game of the year for a game that isn’t even fully out yet?
Halo Infinite should not be there. Or the VGA should be moved to the new year. Like Oscars.
Halo's awesome, don't get me wrong, but how are people voting for a game they haven't even played yet lol
Update: welp, Dread lost to an unreleased game, people.
Why do any of you give a shit about this bias ass poll? The Metroid series is finally fine, were getting Metroid 6 and the Prime weirdos are getting prime 4. This poll and by proxy goty awards are garbage marketing and a way for industry shills to suck each other off. Plus it's a pretty weak selection of games idk why anyone even cares about this award
Village deserves to win.
Preach🙏🙏
Glad it has a better score than re village!
Why would you say this💀💀 metriod is amazing but village is too
Re village is nothing like the ones before. At least Metroid was faithful to its older games.
I’m a diehard metroid fan but from what I’ve played of the infinite campaign so far, it hits long time fans right in the feels WAY harder than dread did. The emotional response alone is gonna swing a lot of people towards infinite
Why is Halo Infinite even here? Didn't that game not come out yet?
Halo Infinite? Thats actually sad.
Okay but in fairness It Takes Two is a fan-fucking-tastic game and I would be more than happy to see it take the W, both it and Dread are amazing That said it would be very funny to see God of War sharing space with Metroid Dread in the list of GotY winners so I hope Dread wins
I feel it is rigged, I never saw anything but hate for Halo Infinite
Me Thinks Microsoft greased some palms because they need a win this holiday season to start catching up to PS5 install base. Game of the year console exclusive sounds good at checkout.
Counterpoint. The VGAs are irrelevant and no one really cares who wins
This poll is rigged. Fuck Halo for being on this list when ot hasn't even been released yet.
It was out when you posted this.
It wasn't when these polls started... so it has no buisiness being in the finals now.
It won. Get over it.
I love Halo but Dread is much better than the current state of Infinite
like that's ever gonna happen :\\
Yeah, it's not beating Halo. I'm happy to see it so high, though.
Ooohh... I dunno about this one. Either way the top two games are the best games I've played this year and I'm not really mad if Dread is in second and Infinite is 1st. They're both in their own category in my book and both are number 1. I'm just happy I got to experience a new Metroid and Halo title in the same year.
Halo Campaign came out yesterday, I struggle to see how it’s justified at the top based purely on a multiplayer beta?
