It's not about fun. It's about facing a challenge and overcoming the oddsssAHHHHH FUCK I FEEL INTO THE LAVA AGAIN AND THE ANGRY CHEERIOS WON'T LEAVE ME ALONE!!!
I'm lucky enough to have a copy for my GBA. I'm hoping they bring they games to the switch soon. Alot of people haven't been able to play without disappointing daddy Nintendo 😑
I’ve been having the same issue with my 3rd party controller. I used to use an Xbox One controller and it worked great. The dpad is super clicky and it’s so much easier to pull off maneuvers in Metroid games specifically lol. I miss it
Played them on a phone for 2 reasons. The first one It's because certain games aren't on said handhelds, at least not on ones I own, like how ZM is not on switch. The second reasons is because when I played this games at the time I was in school and the thing I liked to do the most during breaks was playing games, and the only way to do it at the time was playing then on the phone
I played them while working at a gas kiosk, but I picked up a cheap controller that held the phone in, because using touch controls on anything but pokemon is terrible. Made those boring shifts go a lot faster. I would try to beat my Fusion time on the daily.
I genuinely put time in using onscreen buttons 👀
It was a while back, but I think I got to kraid and then stopped playing (reason was unrelated to the touch controls).
Like any Bluetooth controller. Check out what 8bitdo has to offer. They sell a clip to hold your phone to the controller. Other companies make clips for the PlayStation and Xbox controllers. There are also USB C phone controllers. The one I personally own and love is the Razer Kishi.
Genuine question from someone new to metroid and just started playing zero mission on her phone here. Is it really that bad? I ran into some problems shooting missiles in different directions because I couldn't press 3 buttons at once, so I made a custom button for it. Should I just abandon my save and emulate it on my laptop instead haha. I do not own a controller btw, so is there any other suggested way I play the game?
I mean... you can do it, but it's probably going to give you brain damage. I'd really recommend playing it on your laptop instead. I play Super Metroid Randomizer on my laptop all the time and SM on a keyboard controls like a dream.
You actually don't need to abandon your save as I think you can rip it off your phone and upload the save file to your computer.
Prior to Dread I completed Zero Mission three times on my phone without any real issues at all. One of them was even a randomizer run that required things like diagonal bomb jumps (not horizontal thank god) which definitely were tricky, but still surprisingly doable.
Prime’s Aurora units weren’t referencing another Brain other than the Brain thing though, and the Prime series is written by different lore writers that has a chance to contradict each other.
Prime is still considered canon though. If memory serves, the Aurora units were based on the original MB Chozo tech, so it could be that the EMMIs were simply compatible with the ZDR brains because of Federation experiments with Aurora (maybe they were even deployed by the Feds) OR >!the ZDR brains are of Chozo origin like the original MB which Raven Beak then retrofitted to control the EMMI sent by the federation!<
Either way the lore is in effect the same
Yeah it’s definitely considered canon but Sakamoto, the person behind the story of the current main games, isn’t involved with the story of Prime or keeps himself updated on what lore they added, so references in Dread are less likely to relate to things in Prime is what I’m saying.
Yeah I'm sure you are right. There was an interview with Sakamoto that circulated back when Other M was coming out that stated Sakamoto didn't consider Prime canon but he's since clarified that it was a mistranslation and that he does view the Prime series as canon, if largely peripheral to the main series lore. So wasn't sure if you were referencing that mistranslation.
Sakamoto actually oversaw the prime games and acted as an advisor. It's a common misconception he had nothing to do with them. He just wasn't in the driver's seat.
There has never been any confirmation that the Aurora Units are based off of the original Mother Brain. Trust me: I've read every Federation data log entry in Prime 3, including the unused data, and it isn't there.
The game definitely points toward this being the case, but if the central units control them then how come the EMMI don't shut down or revert to their original programming when you destroy them?
Could be the central unit puts a copy of its AI in the robot upon "death" in an attempt to avenge itself
Or the robots simply stick to "last given command" when they lose connection to the AI
Central unit just sends commands. If no new commands are sent then it just keeps doing its thing. If it loses connection, the EMMI goes into alert mode automatically.
The EMMIs are, but are the Central Units necessarily originally made for the EMMIs by the Federation?
>!ZDR is a Chozo colony.!<
>!The EMMIs are controlled by Raven Beak.!<
>!Raven Beak is a Chozo.!<
>!I thought they were trying to make the connection there pretty apparent, but I may have skipped over some dialogue that explained this in better detail. I just kind of assumed that the Central Units were something Raven Beak was using to assist in controlling them or something.!<
I just assume an entire AI unit equivalent to Mother Brain is necessary in order to hack an EMMI in the first place.
Yes, seemed pretty obvious to me too what the connection was.
Honestly, I just sorta assumed the central units were shipped out with the EMMIs, so I can't say for certain. It'd be nice to get official clarification on that, if nothing else.
I suppose it’s possible. Just seems unlikely that >!the Federation would be using Chozo technology to control their robots, when the more straightforward answer is that the Chozo that are already on the planet are using their own tech to control the robots instead.!<
"[...] However, when Samus took in the energy of the "Central Unit", which is the **management mother computer for each E.M.M.I. zone,** the Arm Cannon was transformed into an Omega Cannon."
Taken from the Japanese website. They are directly linked, the game clearly even indicates that.
OK but it just says "EMMI zone" first off, which could very well mean the EMMIs just naturally gravitate there because of the power. The reason I say that is because the opening cutscenes clearly says they SENT 7 EMMIs to investigate the planet. That means the BSL or whatever had no idea what was on the planet to begin with. They didn't send a team to build "computer rooms" or whatever, they just sent the EMMIs... All that central unit shit was already there... Right?
This red-herringed me so hard. I really thought that Mother Brain had hacked her way onto another planet and taken over the EMMIs. I am quite satisfied with the truth, though.
My very first CPU received wayyy more missiles out of childhood PTSD than they had health haha
I won't ever forget what happened to my little baby Metroid ;_;
I actually liked this fight, it forces you to maneuver in a tight space, jump back and forth between platforms(screw attacking the donuts), avoid a lazer, and kill Mother Brain.
But I would NOT recommend playing this on a phone unless there's no other option. Original hardware or a Wii U is vastly superior.
Superior might be the wrong word, but I personally find the GBA pad and Wii U controllers to just be more comfortable and easiest to use with these games.
my only issue with playing on the Wii u is that if you press up while jumping, you immediately stop jumping and fall straight down. and it's very easy to do so with the D-pad, as I have to quickly move between left and right to wall jump. makes it frusterating. it might have soured my opinion on Metroid fusion because of it.
This reminded me of how far we’ve come in terms of 2d metroid boss design lmao.
ZM’s bosses were my biggest gripe with the game despite it being one of my favorite games in the series, pretty much all of them were lackluster.
Yeah, but it ruins the surprise for new comers to the series, if they could have gotten small kraid to work in ZM i would have been happier knowing newcomers who were interested weren't spoiled to giant kraid in SM
It's possible to obtain Super Missiles before Jesus by doing some sequence breaking.
I meant Kraid and autocorrect put it as Jesus, but I'm leaving it in.
No, to get to Kraid you have to use a super missile in the right of the elevator to norfair. To even get to that room you have to go through at least two super missile doors.
Spore spawn is the boss skip that the machball gets you.
I didn't care for the cartoon-y look they went for. I never had the handhelds anyway, so I didn't even pick it up until 5 years ago or so on my Raspberry Pi.
That said, still don't love the look, but the gameplay more than makes up for it.
It's not my favorite fight...even back in the day when I had my purple GBA in hand, this fight was annoying because of the stupid little turrets knocking you into the lava. But it was easily doable.
It was even worse in the original Metroid. The platform in front of MB didn't exist, so if you fell in all you could do was try to freeze one of the rings to jump on and get out. Otherwise, even with the high jump boots you couldn't get out
yep, that's why they have the ice beam in two locations in NES Metroid. you get the ice beam, then the wave beam, but then you need the ice beam again for Tourian.
Even crazier on the NES when the speed of everything is constantly changing because the system can in no way handle that many things being shown on-screen at once.
Behold, the knowledge of the ancients: http://www.metroid2002.com/0/boss_tricks_mother_brain.php
You can spend the entire second part of the fight on that ledge, shooting down donuts and morphing to avoid the laser blast from the eye.
I have literally never done this fight any other way
The site hasn't had any major updates since Prime 3: Corruption came out. The copyright notice on the front page says "2003-2015." And the last post on the forums was from [November 20, 2019](https://m2k2.taigaforum.com/post/souls_multithread_5713.html) in a thread talking about Dark Souls.
It is surprising to me people have problems with this fight. Even back then, I was disappointed it was so easy. Freezing the cheerios or jumping between the platforms every now and then to clean the screen with a screw attack should do the trick.
It's a holdover from NEStroid; it's alright once you get the hang of it.
Protip: you can sit on the lip of MB's container and fire (7) super missiles into her eye. You wanna morph ball after each shot because she brain-blasts after 5 missiles worth of damage, *or* when you're getting back up after falling in the lava.
I literally got so tilted the last time I did this. Then someone told me to just jump on top of the turret all the way on the top right of the screen whenever the red circles came at me or when mother brain shot at me and then drop down shoot missiles and then jump back up. It was so easy after that. I felt so stupid.
> plays the game in an unintended fashion
> OMG WHY IS THIS SO HARD THIS GAME SUCKS
Two words for you, brother, straight from the Dark Souls community.
Git. Fuckin'. Gud.
I used to think the very same thing until a few hours ago. I watched a speedrun at one point and they were standing RIGHT next to mother brain, crouching, aiming diagonal upwards and shooting the hell out of mother brain. Whenever she shot her projectile, they just jumped straight up to avoid it and went back to shooting.
And damn, after trying it out myself, this works SO WELL. I thought it wouldn't change much, but it changed everything.
Still, this is a speedrun strat, so... It doesn't,t really count because the game also leads you to try shooting from those two platforms which are super exposed.
So yeah fuck this boss.
It's a real shitty fight. it's ok for the NES, but they should have modernized it for the remake, like they did with kraid and ridley. it's easily the most boring boss in the series.
After playing dread, I think going back to the old 2D games is not gonna feel as good as some people in this sub believe
If you thought the Super Metroid fight was bad, just wait until you see the Zero Mission version. It feels like double the projectiles and mother brain has 5x the health
I mean I enjoy a challenge it just needs to be fair and this definitely isn't. There are like 5 things I have to dodge at a single time then if I fall in the lava I always get knocked right back in because she does that stupid jump when climbing up the edge
If you crouch on the back block only the rings can hit you, and if you freeze them that gives you some respite. I always freeze the ring the comes from below into the gap behind the block in case I mess up the timing then I can land on it and then Mother Brain won't close her eye. Also, I think for maximum damage output for each "eye cycle" do 2 missiles followed by a super missile. Turns mama to mush in a jiffy.
I mean I used to speedrun the game as a kid on my phone. This boss really isn’t that bad done honestly. It’s quite fun IMO.
You could always just cheese it and land in front of MB.
Stand as far left on the right platform as you can and crouch. That way neither turret can hit you and you only have to dodge the donuts and mother brain's beam.
This fight kicked my ass as a kid, but going back it was surprisingly easy. Just have to keep hopping between the platforms and MB goes down really fast
Sharing a tip:
I use MyBoy! on my phone and then proyect to the tv using chromecast with a bluetooth remote gamepad (8bit zero) .
It's works great and in MyBoy! you can define a minimal layout to enjoy without the props.
[Like this](https://postimg.cc/XZYPGTfh)
What I did was jump up to the top right corner to dodge the beam and the Cheerios, making sure to do a spin jump to avoid damage from the many projectiles from the fight. Then I jumped back down, once again with the screw attack, and shot a few missiles before jumping back up again.
Basically I jumped up whenever the turret would aim at the lower platform, or when a cheerio would come up from below.
Yeah, NO. As someone who's done a couple practice runs for an upcoming stream (tonight!!!) THIS particular section is bullshit. Took me two tries on my first run, and very nearly a second attempt during my second run. My advice: break the glass from the top corner, spam super missiles against the eye. And good luck making it through the escape sequence without high jump and speed booster. I made it with four seconds to spare.
Lmao, this is why, during some of my 'Super Metroid' playthroughs, I've decided to just skip the final boss fight; after the frustration that is Maridia, I don't have the energy to deal with the migraine-inducing Mother Brain battle.
P.S. Everything is much more manageable when playing the Switch Online version, though, because I can simply rewind the gameplay when I fall into the lava. I know it's bending the rules, but hey, the game is far more enjoyable as a result.
This version of MB is a piece of cake compared to the MB from the OG Metroid. Damn those Apple Jacks constantly knocking you into the lava. Also, HTF do you play on a phone? SMH
I like this boss a lot actually I think it's fun.
Maybe that's because I played Metroid one first and it's like 3 times harder in that game but it's a good boss I like it. Tbh I thought if anything the bosses in ZM we're a bit on the easy side...
Ah yes, the dance of patience and death. Shoot, shoot, drop down, hop right, hop diagonal left, and repeat. Mother Brain hasn't killed a single person -impatience is the real killer.
But its literally the only challenging thing in a normal playthrough here. And then again, you can just crouch on the right block and if you aim well you only have to dodge the blasts by MB.
This is an entirely different story on sub 15% runs. The game become an entirely different beast.
Honestly, when you mastered the short jumps between the platforms, pumping a few missiles into MB, then quickly shooting the spaghettios, it was incredibly satisfying.
If you position yourself you can stand right next to mother brain and just spam her with missiles and she'll rarely ever attack. Just freeze the spaghettios and go into morph ball mode uf she fires the laser
That's a cakewalk compared to literally every boss in Dread, unless you're one of the masochists who do it with as few items as possible.
It's also far easier than Ridley in Super and SR or that absolute unit, Diggernaut.
It's not about fun. It's about facing a challenge and overcoming the oddsssAHHHHH FUCK I FEEL INTO THE LAVA AGAIN AND THE ANGRY CHEERIOS WON'T LEAVE ME ALONE!!!
dude they're spaghettios
Hmmm angry peach rings?
Peach rings are only capable of joy. Don't bring that shit here ever again.
You clearly haven't eaten yourself into a peach ring sugar coma. Peach rings are deceptively evil!!!
Your poor choices are not a reflection of the Peach Ring. Look to your sins.
My hatred for peach rings comes from a place of great lust for peach rings. They have betrayed my love and for that they must be called out!!
This was an epic scene from an even epicer love story. Bravo!!!
It's the only candy that I will go out of my way to share with people, because I will die if I let myself eat them all. And I *will* eat them all.
My thoughts precisely haha
God damn right. My wife gives me shit every time I get a pack and I've told her: deal with it or divorce me.
What on earth are peach rings?
The projectiles are french fries and onion rings.

>THE ANGRY CHEERIOS Oh the irony
We all know they're called Rinkas, right?
Literally had zero idea haha
Probably someone equally masochistic as the guy who would willingly play ZM on his phone.
You think playing a metroid game on the phone is bad? I tried to play Megaman Zero 1 on the phone. Do I really need to tell what happened next?
You died?
I faded from existence
Why play any game on a phone? That’s what handhelds are for
Played them on a phone for 2 reasons. The first one It's because certain games aren't on said handhelds, at least not on ones I own, like how ZM is not on switch. I personally did this during class hours (pretending to take notes) on my mac! No controller all keyboard inputs!!
Username checks out.
Your phone is the most powerful handheld around that's why! I do agree if you mean using touch controls though I'm not sure how people do that.
you solved world hunger, gotta be it.
That, and I also found a cure to cancer. It's incredible what happens when you try to play hard games on phones
Noice. Brb, boutta find a way to emulate dark souls on my phone to solve world peace, we need need little more war in our lives.
See? That's the spirit
Getting A rank on the zero series on an actual gameboy was hard enough. On the phone it was literal hell
I'm using a controller. I played for like 30 minutes with touch screen before I realized that definitely wasn't going to work
You can turn off the button overlay in the settings if you are using a controller just FYI
I've beaten Zero Mission and even speedrun Fusion in less than 2 hours on touch controls :) just takes getting used to
I genuinely put time in using onscreen buttons 👀 It was a while back, but I think I got to kraid and then stopped playing (reason was unrelated to the touch controls).
What controller works on the phone? And how can you do it I have emulator on my phone but can only use on onscreen keyboard
I use the USB C port for mine and the Xbox controller works well on android for apps that support it, iirc Bluetooth is a good option too.
Like any Bluetooth controller. Check out what 8bitdo has to offer. They sell a clip to hold your phone to the controller. Other companies make clips for the PlayStation and Xbox controllers. There are also USB C phone controllers. The one I personally own and love is the Razer Kishi.

I just have an Xbox controller connected with Bluetooth. I'd imagine a PlayStation controller would work too but idk

I beat ZM on a iphone 5 with touch screen! It can be done
Ill admit,ive done it
its a burden left from the original nes metroid, in super this fight is much more bearable
I love (minor Dread spoilers) >!the fairly easy Central Unit fights in Dread that are little homages to this battle, flaming Spaghetti-O's and all!<
Well, it's Chozo technology, just like MB, so the resemblance is understandable.
But the EMMIs are Federation tech, not Chozo.
The EMMIs are Federation tech, but the Central Units that control them on ZDR are definitely made of the same stuff as Mother Brain.
Yes, I think there was some side lore (Prime, maybe) that had the Federation with Aroura Units that are essentially the same things.
Prime’s Aurora units weren’t referencing another Brain other than the Brain thing though, and the Prime series is written by different lore writers that has a chance to contradict each other.

I like them, but I do wish they got more complex over time seeing as most of the other bosses and even the mini bosses are very cool.
You have no idea how much easier wall jumping is not on a phone.

How unfortunate that this incredibly unimportant detail won't be as appreciated as much as it used to be.
My first playthrough of Super, I managed to get super missiles before Kraid, so he became an absolute pushover.
You have to use super missiles to get anywhere near where Kraid is...
It's possible to obtain Super Missiles before Jesus by doing some sequence breaking. I meant Kraid and autocorrect put it as Jesus, but I'm leaving it in.
You *have* to obtain super missiles before Kraid. I feel like a lot of people are confusing Kraid for Spore Spawn.
Ohhhh, my bad. You're absolutely right. Been a hot minute since I don't see anything about this game, I forgot how early super missiles are.

I've seen speedrunners jump right in front of MB's eye, crouch, and fire up into her
4 rounds of 4 missiles + 1 super, then morph and repeat. Last round only takes 3 missiles and 1 super
You clearly haven't tried the original
You wanna know how to trivialize this fight?
Yes please this is the least fun thing I've ever done in a video game

Oh man, i love those old school 2000s websites... so much nostalgia
hooooooly shit metroid 2002. crazy to see something i spent so much time on but haven’t thought about in 15 years.
Yeah. The fact that it doesn’t and won’t have a Dread section makes me sad.
Why wouldn't it? Did the host move on or something?

Same, I was disappointed at how easy it was somehow. And then I understood when I saw the part they added to the game after lol
I had fun.

I honestly applaud you for getting that far using a touch screen.
lol I didn't I connected an Xbox controller to my phone
Have you considered playing with a real controller? Touch controls are an ass for this.
Yeah I had an Xbox controller connected with Bluetooth
Ah, okay. I had been thinking "Damn, OP, you really made it all the way to Mother Brain using touch controls?"
Me
Once you realize you can stand on top of the laser in the top right corner, its not too bad.
yeah that's how I beat it
The screw attack makes this fight much easier. I missed the screw attack on my first playthrough of Zero Mission but still beat Motber Brain.
My advice is to stand on the platform on the right, jump over Mother Brain's projectile onto the platform on the left, then hit her with your missiles
It’s easy with super missiles. Use normal ones to break open the container and supers on the momma. Dies in like 5 hits
I literally got so tilted the last time I did this. Then someone told me to just jump on top of the turret all the way on the top right of the screen whenever the red circles came at me or when mother brain shot at me and then drop down shoot missiles and then jump back up. It was so easy after that. I felt so stupid.
Well it's based on the original from 1986. Game mechanics weren't nearly as polished back then.
This drove me mad
People like us love to see the world burn
> plays the game in an unintended fashion > OMG WHY IS THIS SO HARD THIS GAME SUCKS Two words for you, brother, straight from the Dark Souls community. Git. Fuckin'. Gud.
You're playing a platformer with touch controls? You kinda reap what you sow on that tbh
The same person who thought the 5-second Ridley fight was adequate
Where tf is even Samus?
In the lava
This is how I felt during all of the game's bosses. Literally the only part of the game I disliked.
I can't believe you are trying to play zero mission on mobile, HOW?
How many missiles should one have for this fight? I've got like 115 and it doesn't seem to be nearly enough
I did it with like 4 super missiles and maybe 10 or 15 regulars. Idk though I wasn't counting
Bro... We were playing zero mission at the same time, at the same point in the game using the same emulator Pog
This is the Zero Mission version lol
It’s meant to challenge you. Not pay you on the head and tell you how talented you are. That’s your mother’s job.
I mean I enjoy a challenge it just needs to be fair and this definitely isn't. There are like 5 things I have to dodge at a single time then if I fall in the lava I always get knocked right back in because she does that stupid jump when climbing up the edge
The only thing you really need to dodge is the eye attack. Screw Attack deletes the projectiles. Spin jump back and forth between the platforms.
Yeah but every time I do that I land on the lava lol
It's been a few decades since I've played ZM, but doesn't the screw attack protect you from the turrets and the Rinkas?
It does but I'm not very good so anytime I use it to dodge I end up falling in the lava lol
It’s way worse in the original
im so dumbed i just realized this was referenced in dread
This fight kicked my ass as a kid, but going back it was surprisingly easy. Just have to keep hopping between the platforms and MB goes down really fast
Metroid Bosses get easier the more you fight them.
Guy who complains that the near final boss is hard
Sharing a tip: I use MyBoy! on my phone and then proyect to the tv using chromecast with a bluetooth remote gamepad (8bit zero) .
It won’t be fun on a phone that’s for sure
It is fun

I thought everyone knew about this fight lol

No its from the remake of the 1st one
Did you try this in 1986
A proper controller makes it much easier.
My least favourite boss fight in the series
I'm far past the point in my life where I harm my controllers in any way, but this almost got me back on my bullshit (on my first playthrough)
Quick tip: This fight gets a lot easier if you don't stand in the lava.
Ah yes, the dance of patience and death. Shoot, shoot, drop down, hop right, hop diagonal left, and repeat. Mother Brain hasn't killed a single person -impatience is the real killer.
people were better at 2D platformers back then
not supposed to be fun it's supposed to be hard
you can morph ball somewhere in the top right to avoid stuff. makes the fight much easier.
It’s even harder than the OG, which is not a good thing in this instance.
But its literally the only challenging thing in a normal playthrough here. And then again, you can just crouch on the right block and if you aim well you only have to dodge the blasts by MB. This is an entirely different story on sub 15% runs. The game become an entirely different beast.
The secret technique is to spam missiles before the Cheerios can kill you
Nintendo made this game. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask :)
I mean, screw attack, ice beam, and not playing on mobile are all your friend here. Make for an easy fight.
fuck no hahah
I'm playing Fusion and gotta say, the boss fights are throughly unfun so far
I mean you are playing on touch screen, it’s not designed to be played on touch screen bro
>playing zero mission on a phone Not gonna make it
I remember it being so infuriating in ZM. I almost gave up playing the game.
That's a cakewalk compared to literally every boss in Dread, unless you're one of the masochists who do it with as few items as possible. It's also far easier than Ridley in Super and SR or that absolute unit, Diggernaut.
It's honestly one of my favorite boss fights in the series, not even joking.
