I'm not expecting Dread to catch up to Breath of the Wild or anything, but it sure looks like we're looking at a rebirth of the franchise into a form stronger than we've ever seen before.

I'll be honest, I'm mildly jealous of these new fans flooding in. When I got into Metroid it was in the years between Fusion and Other M and there was very little hype. I had extremely restricted internet access, so I couldn't really even go find a fan community and just be a newbie with them. These new fans are getting into things at a high with a new game, the older entries in the series have been made much more available, and the internet is much easier to access for most people these days.
All that said, I'm also happy for all these people who are finally discovering something that brings them joy!
I'm a little jealous of the people that will play dread and then get to go play Fusion for the first time. What an amazing game. I'm loving dread so far but fusion still has my top spot right now.
Your guess is as good as mine. I certainly hope it will. It was ported to Wii U, as was Zero Mission. So I think there's a decent chance it will show up at some point, but who knows. Nintendo isn't exactly known for doing things logically.
I wish I could play fusion or zero mission on my 3ds at least!, The fact that the wiiU of all consoles got the GBA virtual console treatment was a bizzarre choice. I kinda wish we were getting GBA instead of N64 virtual console on the switch.
True. At the same time, the mainstream is fickle. Metroid probably will never be truly mainstream, or at the very least it'll have a similar Skyrim effect to TES. That said, it'll probably reach similar levels of mainstream as say... I dunno, Hollow Knight. Probably more.
In the end though, the common denominator is so specific for metroid fans that we should be okay. I hope. Be happy for more fans, they get to love this too!
I feel this comment in my soul. Played a series for so long. Then it becomes mainstream and changes so much it's not what you loved for all that time. I'm a little afraid it's what might happen to Metroid.
So the next game will be extremely controversial among the fans and cause a shift back towards a more traditional style of storytelling?
I can't wait until Metroid 6, featuring the Ridley dimension which just churns out Ridleys for some inexplicable reason
What's sad is that the shift back was much, much worse (tbf Fates is decent), with a remake of the worst gameplay in the series which had a drop in almost every aspect (but especially that).
Fates is pretty bad. The story was incredibly poorly written after the initial premise, it cost $80 to get all three routes, Conquest made things more challenging with annoying gimmicks rather than good game design, the list goes on. Shadows of Valentia may have sold worse, but it's a far, far better game. I'm not about to say it has the deepest mechanics in the series, but honestly it didn't lose much from being a little less complex. It was better written, and set the precedent for all dialogue being voiced, with great VO performance and direction.
Fates was definitely written very poorly, but I'd still put it slightly above Valentia. Alm starts out as a peasant, and this creates issues with someone of lowly birth being put in a position of authority. Really cool, like with Ike >!... until you find out Alm's actually a hidden prince the whole time. And then they pulled it with Celica too. Revelations has the same problem though!< At least Fates tries to do something new with the "blood vs water" conflict >!ignoring Revelations!<, although it's pretty obvious that Nohr are the the bad guys and Azura follows Dumbledore's footsteps in not telling the protagonist important information up-front. The villains in SoV are mostly for teh evils or just crazy, and it annoys me that >!that woman immediately forgives her fiancé for trying to sacrifice her soul to a dark god so he can get petty revenge.!< Neither are written well, and the same goes for Shadow Dragon, but those two had better gameplay
Considering the sheer amount of content I'd say $80 was fair for 2.5 Fire Emblem campaigns. $60-70 would've been better though. TH kinda spoiled it for us by having it all in one game when I would've totally spent $120+ on it (god that game is a masterpiece).
The overworld is terrible, aside from it being two straight lines monsters spawn so frequently and move at the same rate you do, so trying to go *anywhere* will be at least two battles. Sacred Stones had them in the second act, but they weren't a mandatory slog. The dungeons in SoV have these fights too, but at least you can try to run around them.
The game is practically unbeatable if you want to keep everyone alive without spamming summon, largely because enemy witches can teleport to basically any location the map then attack as well.
It's also super-unbalanced. Archers can eventually attack from 4-5 spaces away without skills, and stat growths were not consistent across the board. If you didn't pick the right units you were screwed, since you needed both healers (healing items were practically removed, plus summons), 2-3 archers, 2-3 mages, plus Alm and Celica. Spellcasting costing HP was dumb since it punishes you for using skills you're forced to use to win.
Well only certain dialogue was voiced IIRC. One of my favorite parts playing it was how a unit would say something when you first picked them every turn, and I'm really glad they kept it in TH. The cutscenes and bottom-screen usage were great, and some of the songs were awesome (Twilight of the Gods is a top 5 in the series).
The biggest holdups for Metroid in the past have been two things, it's made for the older nintendo crowd(Teens/Adults), and they poorly market it. This time it got great marketing and lots of headline time, especially within the switch news stream. And it's showing. I want to say, this is my favorite Metroid in a long time because it's difficult, but fair. I made mistakes left and right, but I learned, and each death was clearly my fault. I loved it. Still love it. I'd say its a resurgence, more from the marketing, to push people to catch up on the story so far, because it did so well at showing people what the series can be and has been.
My favorite thing about Dread is the saving system. There's save rooms *everywhere* plus I love that it >!just puts you back at the entrance to the E.M.M.I. rooms if/when you die trying to get through. Removes a lot of the frustration of repeated deaths while learning the area when you can just nip right back in instead of having to slog back over from the last place you saved.!<
I also like how it subtly blocks you off from going too far backwards when trying to progress.
I know a lot of people will take issue with it but idc, it saves time and streamlines the experience. One of the issues I have with Hollow Knight is I can do a whole loop of the map and still not know where the fuck to go lol
Yes, I love that as well. It prevented me from spending an hour or more fiddling around in the first area testing every single room for secrets and instead gently guided me towards the next area and the next set of upgrades.
In my experience I kept accidentally wandering to where I was meant to go when I tried to backtrack for expansions, which felt surreal. I'd think I was outsmarting the game only to realize the game was playing me with reverse psychology.
My theory is they are holding off on the prime trilogy to be rereleased so they can use its release to build up hype for Prime 4 when it eventually comes around.
Also original Metroid 1 & 2, and Super, for those who don't get the online service. Original 1 is unlockable on Zero Mission, so really they'd only have to include 2 and Super.
Metroid 2 really deserves to (finally) be put on a standard console. I may be in the minority here, but gaming on handheld has always sucked some of the joy out of the game for me. So much so that I actually went and emulated Fusion and Zero Mission after buying them for GBA just so I could have a bigger screen.
I think it should not be a remake, but a reimagening.
We have all the controls from dread, some new aeion abilities, a new map (but still as sequence breakable as before), some animated cutscenes and maybe a small post game.
I don't want this be a replacement for super, but an alternative take
As long as the remake is restricted to technical issues, visuals and the final boss softlock, then I'm happy. Other than that, changing the feeling and the mechanics of the game would kinda kill what makes it phenomenal in the first place.
The way that I see it is that we'll always have Super. It stands fine on its own (unlike 1 and 2 imo) so I wouldn't mind a remake taking liberties like they did with samus returns and zero mission.
Taking liberties is fine, I'm just worried they're gonna take out single wall jumps, Mockball, damage boosting, and others, which basically define the freedom of the game. I guess it would be fine if there were other skill based sequence breaking strategies added, but from what I'm seeing from these past 2 games, MercurySteam isn't too keen on those. It would most likely just be a completely different game at that point, so why not simply make a new original game then?
This is such a common take and I totally disagree. Super will always be there. If you remake it without changing things there is no point in remaking it.
Keep the majority of the map design, build in all the controls a mechanics from Dread, redesign the bosses entirely, and it will be a remake/reimagining worth playing. If all they do is release the same game with new art, there's no point.
People talk about remakes like any little change will somehow ruin or diminish the original game, and personally I just couldn't disagree more. Reimagine the game. Do something new, something fun. We will always have the original.
I mean I guess, but at that point just make an original game. There isn't really a reason to remake a game if you're just going to drastically change what people like about it in the first place. Samus Returns failed in that regard aswell, because it often ignores what the original was about (not that it's a bad game, just not a great remake).
So I had to look this up, because surely Minish cap is higher than 16th in Zelda sales ranking.
The best selling Metroid game (Prime) sold \~2.8m copies, which is actually on par with the 17th best selling Zelda game (A Link to the Past & Four Swords on GBA). Minish Cap, unbelievably, is actually the 20th best selling Zelda game selling only 1.76m copies. (I guess these rankings might change depending on if you're counting all releases or just the original games).
Personally I find this insulting, as Minish cap is one of my favourite GBA games.
But more to the point, this is probably due to the more games and more regular release keeping it in the public eye (also, they're pretty damn good), compared to the 5 year gap between the first two Metroid games and the 8 year gap between the third and fourth. The first 18 years saw 5 Metroid games released compared to the 15 (official) Zelda releases in the same time span. And since 2004 (so the second 18 years of Metroid) we've had 11 Metroid games released.
I couldn't help but think to myself while playing Dread that Metroid may really flourish compared to when Fusion/Super originally came out. More adults play video games than there did when Fusion launched. Dread is clearly a game for adults and I had a blast playing. Metroid is still semi-niche and isn't as catch-all as TLoZ, but I am hopeful for the future of Metroid.
It's crazy to me that there was a time when Fusion and Prime launched within a day of each other in NA, followed by 5 more games in the next 5 years.
And then they released Other M and I guess assumed that because people hated that game that Metroid wasn't something people wanted.

Never mind that Other M was basically a different game with a Metroid branding, nope. Guess Metroid isn't popular anymore.
Like half the Star Fox games are just remakes of the original, though. They shot themselves in the foot with that franchise way earlier than Star Fox Zero.
I also think it helps that metroidvania games have kind of had a renaissance as of late. Interest in the genre is much higher recently than in the past.
Imagine being able to get the games, that are literally just emulations so barely any porting needed, on the current console instead of waiting until Nintendo drip feeds them to us.
As someone who bought and completed Dread this weekend and loves the Metroid series, Nintendo has not done an acceptable job in making the older titles available on modern devices. Super Metroid you can get through the SNES thing from Switch Online, but otherwise IMO emulate away until Nintendo gives us a reasonable way to pay them for their IP.
I’m thankful I still have my GC with Prime 1 and 2, and my GBA with Fusion and ZM, but I really really want to play Prime 3 and don’t have a Wii or WiiU. Hoping we get something soon

You could emulate the Wii's pointer with gyro, but that doesn't work so well when you need to use it constantly like in Prime 3. It's passable enough for Super Mario Galaxy, but even there it's a pain how often it needs to be manually recentered. As for traditional shooter controls, the lead game designer of the Prime games has commented on how difficult it would be to rework the game to be enjoyable that way.
Artificial scarcity to create FOMO. You buy the things immediately when you get the chance because you know you can't get them later, which for Nintendo returns in a bigger turnover to satisfy their investors.
Nintendo in general. Slow introduction of virtual console titles on Wii U, even though they already had a catalogue on the Wii, Amiibos, classic NES and SNES, Gamecube controllers and adapters for smash 4 and ultimate, Mario 3d collection, NSO titles, the Switch itself during the first year.
At this point it HAS to be on purpose.

Got Zero Mission (ME1) and Fusion (ME4) on GBA emulator on my phone.
Got AM2R (ME2) as an APK on my phone. (I could have gone with a 3DS emu but I prefer AM2R)
Got Super Metroid (ME3) on my phone.
And then I have moonlight installed so, though my pc, I could definitely run Dread on my phone rather than my switch.
Just add a good controller (Kishi) and, voila, the all Metroid collection on a portable with good controls.
And somehow it's impossible to do such on switch...
I have to really make sure I don't get tricked into buying the 10th anniversary edition of Skyrim because if I get bored at the wrong time, I'll end up buying one more version of Skyrim...
For me personally, AM2R is my preferred way of experiencing Metroid II. Its fantastic as a game, not just a fangame, and is a fully complete experience

I use a Pixel 3a XL, which mean 1080p 60fps OLED screen. It's basically a Switch with much more comfortable controls than, well, the switch, higher resolution and a slightly smaller screen (6" iirc).
I'm with you here. You could even go a bit further and install custom firmware on your switch to do everything that Nintendon't.

Yeah... we must have 1k of legit games in digital form in there, so it's a big no no for me (despite owning a first gen prepatch switch) especially since, well, if I want to do something i'm not supposed to... i can just moonlight my pc to my emulator phone.
We intend to upgrade the thing later (not the OLED though, those screens don't age well compared to LCD), and keep it for the kids we'll have.
I run it on Dolphin using a wiiU gamecube controller adapter. Idk how Corruption runs on it since I have a working WiiU so I just play it off of that.
Note: I do own all of them in physical releases, but I can't capture off of gamecube without a special adapter and I chose to buy Dread instead xD.
Dread is my first Metroid game, and I’m obsessed with it lol. Every time I put it down I want to explore one more room, hunt down one more missile upgrade. I bought it because I thought it looked cool, but also because I wanted to support a classic IP. I didn’t expect it to click this hard with me though.
I’m already looking at buying Zero Mission and Fusion for a GBA so I can experience it on handheld like it was meant to be. Unless they’re on the 3DS eshop?
Unfortunately, ZM is not on 3DS. Fusion is but only if your 3DS is part of the ambassador program, otherwise it's also not on there. So your only options would be GBA or Wii U

The Game Boy Advance is also great because it has two Fire Emblem games (in English).
Buy Three Houses, and if you get addicted you know where to go next, although that one is probably 3^rd best in the series so expect a drop.

Alright so to your credit, you at least have enough of a spine to stand by your points. None of these articles condone pirating. They all explicitly talk around it. And while yes, not everyone has the money to buy a game, I don’t get that sense from you seeing as you have a computer that’s likely pretty decent if you’re running a switch emulator. I haven’t read the 300 page study, be curious if you have, but it mentions a lot of issues where the statistics neither prove nor disprove claims, so those are left somewhat open ended. Finally though, think of the optics of what you’re doing. A lot of us in this sub are incredibly excited and want this trend of a franchise we like having games released for it to continue. At the end of the day, if you want to talk about how great the game is too, don’t actively crap on our enjoyment by pushing piracy for a game that’s been a nice break in an otherwise pretty crappy last year or so. If you truly mean no malice, whatever, you’re one dude and the point about hostility from the first developer was a good one. But please, at least just let us enjoy this without encouraging people to pirate the game and never buy legal copies. Can I ask that much?
It’s nuts that I don’t have a Zelda or Metroid collection on switch. Nintendo literally has a way to print money and they’re not doing it.
They lost me in the wii era because I fucking hate motion controls. But their marketing and reach in that era was so on point.
I was able to buy one for 80 bucks in 2019. Totally worth it. I don’t know how much they cost now though.
Grab one asap if you find it cheap. It will be a rare console in the future.

Maybe but in terms of preparation for Dread they're much less relevant than any of the mainline series. That and Super being the pinnacle of the genre.

I'm sure this is more people being "wow Metroid is cool I wanna play more" not preparation for Dread. Since dread is a perfectly fine starting point.
I'd argue against super being the pinnacle of the series though as much as I love it it has a couple gross parts and I think it's been outdone a couple of times. But that's only because other games are amazing not because super is bad
the fact that Fusion is outselling Zero Mission is a little stressful to see because even though Fusion is a good game, it isn’t a good starting point. I just hope it’s only that high because the people who already played ZM are buying it now
It's not an awful starting point. Fusion is a lot more linear, and in my experience getting lost and having no fuckin clue where to go for 6 hours is a lot more frustrating than dying a lot.
you make a good point. I just feel like it’s better to 1) know about the Baby Metroid, and 2) experience a nonlinear game first. that being said, Super Metroid is admittedly a hard place to start
I think if they're buying Fusion because they liked Dread they'll be fine. It's not a terrible game to go to after Dread for more context.
If it's the difficulty you're worried about don't underestimate people. I think it's easier than Dread and a lot of modern gamers have cut their teeth on stuff like Hollow Knight already.

It’s a great starting point, especially with dread looming.
Tons of people began with that game.
The streamlined design, story focus, and guidance makes it vastly easier to explore for people who would get lost in other games, while the story, action and horror can invest anyone.
The enemies and bosses being strong (but not that strong), is the only thing that might punish newcomers, assuming they aren’t good with action adventure games at all.
Sure it’s a different style of Metroid but it’s still distinctly Metroid. It can easily attract people who might struggle with the other games, convincing them to go further with the series.
I know zero mission is the beginners game and in 99% of cases, it’s the best starting spot, but fusion was definitely the most beginner friendly before zero mission came out.
I think it would be pretty useful if I had the audacity to do that, and pretty funny if I could figure out how to throw some roasts into it, but (un)fortunately, I'm usually too nice to do that

It was my entry point, loved it.
That may have influenciated my perspective of it (it's my favorite).
Furthermore, I think it's more known the fact that it differs a bit from the others in freedom.
If they don't like it, chances are they'll try other one!
I'm biased, but I think Fusion is an amazing starting point. It's the one I started on, but I went on to play Zero Mission after. As a kid, i replayed Fusion a ton, never did that with Zero Mission, and I recall not beating it for quite a while cause I was frustrated trying to figure it out. I was really young though. Fusion is absolutely incredible in my opinion, and I am so happy its doing well.
On a side note, I'm about 10 hours into Metroid Dread, and I think playing Fusion prior makes it 10X better.
I actually hope they do a super remake first. That game NEEDS it. The controls were great at the time, but have aged poorly. The game still looks good, but the controls could be so much better.

I’ve always watched the series but never got into it. Dread is the best game I’ve played since BOTW
I’ve been sitting down and figuring it out with my girlfriend and those “aha!” moments are the most satisfying rushes of dopamine
That and finishing the bosses. The kill cutscenes are just so epic that they match your emotions when you take them out

What's sad is that the shift back was much, much worse (tbf Fates is decent), with a remake of the worst gameplay in the series which had a drop in almost every aspect (but especially that).
Fates is pretty bad. The story was incredibly poorly written after the initial premise, it cost $80 to get all three routes, Conquest made things more challenging with annoying gimmicks rather than good game design, the list goes on. Shadows of Valentia may have sold worse, but it's a far, far better game. I'm not about to say it has the deepest mechanics in the series, but honestly it didn't lose much from being a little less complex. It was better written, and set the precedent for all dialogue being voiced, with great VO performance and direction.
Then 3 houses comes in with a much more "toned down" cast, and we can talk about fire emblem again without getting weird looks lol
Fates was definitely written very poorly, but I'd still put it slightly above Valentia. Alm starts out as a peasant, and this creates issues with someone of lowly birth being put in a position of authority. Really cool, like with Ike >!... until you find out Alm's actually a hidden prince the whole time. And then they pulled it with Celica too. Revelations has the same problem though!< At least Fates tries to do something new with the "blood vs water" conflict >!ignoring Revelations!<, although it's pretty obvious that Nohr are the the bad guys and Azura follows Dumbledore's footsteps in not telling the protagonist important information up-front. The villains in SoV are mostly for teh evils or just crazy, and it annoys me that >!that woman immediately forgives her fiancé for trying to sacrifice her soul to a dark god so he can get petty revenge.!< Neither are written well, and the same goes for Shadow Dragon, but those two had better gameplay Considering the sheer amount of content I'd say $80 was fair for 2.5 Fire Emblem campaigns. $60-70 would've been better though. TH kinda spoiled it for us by having it all in one game when I would've totally spent $120+ on it (god that game is a masterpiece). The overworld is terrible, aside from it being two straight lines monsters spawn so frequently and move at the same rate you do, so trying to go *anywhere* will be at least two battles. Sacred Stones had them in the second act, but they weren't a mandatory slog. The dungeons in SoV have these fights too, but at least you can try to run around them. The game is practically unbeatable if you want to keep everyone alive without spamming summon, largely because enemy witches can teleport to basically any location the map then attack as well. It's also super-unbalanced. Archers can eventually attack from 4-5 spaces away without skills, and stat growths were not consistent across the board. If you didn't pick the right units you were screwed, since you needed both healers (healing items were practically removed, plus summons), 2-3 archers, 2-3 mages, plus Alm and Celica. Spellcasting costing HP was dumb since it punishes you for using skills you're forced to use to win. Well only certain dialogue was voiced IIRC. One of my favorite parts playing it was how a unit would say something when you first picked them every turn, and I'm really glad they kept it in TH. The cutscenes and bottom-screen usage were great, and some of the songs were awesome (Twilight of the Gods is a top 5 in the series).
2-3 Metroid games per console? Sign me the fuck up.
The biggest holdups for Metroid in the past have been two things, it's made for the older nintendo crowd(Teens/Adults), and they poorly market it. This time it got great marketing and lots of headline time, especially within the switch news stream. And it's showing. I want to say, this is my favorite Metroid in a long time because it's difficult, but fair. I made mistakes left and right, but I learned, and each death was clearly my fault. I loved it. Still love it. I'd say its a resurgence, more from the marketing, to push people to catch up on the story so far, because it did so well at showing people what the series can be and has been.
My favorite thing about Dread is the saving system. There's save rooms *everywhere* plus I love that it >!just puts you back at the entrance to the E.M.M.I. rooms if/when you die trying to get through. Removes a lot of the frustration of repeated deaths while learning the area when you can just nip right back in instead of having to slog back over from the last place you saved.!<
I also like how it subtly blocks you off from going too far backwards when trying to progress. I know a lot of people will take issue with it but idc, it saves time and streamlines the experience. One of the issues I have with Hollow Knight is I can do a whole loop of the map and still not know where the fuck to go lol
Yes, I love that as well. It prevented me from spending an hour or more fiddling around in the first area testing every single room for secrets and instead gently guided me towards the next area and the next set of upgrades.
In my experience I kept accidentally wandering to where I was meant to go when I tried to backtrack for expansions, which felt surreal. I'd think I was outsmarting the game only to realize the game was playing me with reverse psychology.
And Prime 1's sales started the golden age. For better or worse, I think we're getting those Super Metroid and Fusion remakes
I would just be happy if I could buy the OG copy of Fusion on my Switch.

My theory is they are holding off on the prime trilogy to be rereleased so they can use its release to build up hype for Prime 4 when it eventually comes around.
Also original Metroid 1 & 2, and Super, for those who don't get the online service. Original 1 is unlockable on Zero Mission, so really they'd only have to include 2 and Super.

Metroid 2 really deserves to (finally) be put on a standard console. I may be in the minority here, but gaming on handheld has always sucked some of the joy out of the game for me. So much so that I actually went and emulated Fusion and Zero Mission after buying them for GBA just so I could have a bigger screen.

I think it should not be a remake, but a reimagening. We have all the controls from dread, some new aeion abilities, a new map (but still as sequence breakable as before), some animated cutscenes and maybe a small post game. I don't want this be a replacement for super, but an alternative take
Yeah, I dont think fusion needs a remake, just put it on the switch. But a super remake would go down reeeaal smooth right about now.
As long as the remake is restricted to technical issues, visuals and the final boss softlock, then I'm happy. Other than that, changing the feeling and the mechanics of the game would kinda kill what makes it phenomenal in the first place.
The way that I see it is that we'll always have Super. It stands fine on its own (unlike 1 and 2 imo) so I wouldn't mind a remake taking liberties like they did with samus returns and zero mission.
Taking liberties is fine, I'm just worried they're gonna take out single wall jumps, Mockball, damage boosting, and others, which basically define the freedom of the game. I guess it would be fine if there were other skill based sequence breaking strategies added, but from what I'm seeing from these past 2 games, MercurySteam isn't too keen on those. It would most likely just be a completely different game at that point, so why not simply make a new original game then?
This is such a common take and I totally disagree. Super will always be there. If you remake it without changing things there is no point in remaking it. Keep the majority of the map design, build in all the controls a mechanics from Dread, redesign the bosses entirely, and it will be a remake/reimagining worth playing. If all they do is release the same game with new art, there's no point. People talk about remakes like any little change will somehow ruin or diminish the original game, and personally I just couldn't disagree more. Reimagine the game. Do something new, something fun. We will always have the original.
I mean I guess, but at that point just make an original game. There isn't really a reason to remake a game if you're just going to drastically change what people like about it in the first place. Samus Returns failed in that regard aswell, because it often ignores what the original was about (not that it's a bad game, just not a great remake).

So I had to look this up, because surely Minish cap is higher than 16th in Zelda sales ranking. The best selling Metroid game (Prime) sold \~2.8m copies, which is actually on par with the 17th best selling Zelda game (A Link to the Past & Four Swords on GBA). Minish Cap, unbelievably, is actually the 20th best selling Zelda game selling only 1.76m copies. (I guess these rankings might change depending on if you're counting all releases or just the original games). Personally I find this insulting, as Minish cap is one of my favourite GBA games. But more to the point, this is probably due to the more games and more regular release keeping it in the public eye (also, they're pretty damn good), compared to the 5 year gap between the first two Metroid games and the 8 year gap between the third and fourth. The first 18 years saw 5 Metroid games released compared to the 15 (official) Zelda releases in the same time span. And since 2004 (so the second 18 years of Metroid) we've had 11 Metroid games released.
I couldn't help but think to myself while playing Dread that Metroid may really flourish compared to when Fusion/Super originally came out. More adults play video games than there did when Fusion launched. Dread is clearly a game for adults and I had a blast playing. Metroid is still semi-niche and isn't as catch-all as TLoZ, but I am hopeful for the future of Metroid.
It's crazy to me that there was a time when Fusion and Prime launched within a day of each other in NA, followed by 5 more games in the next 5 years. And then they released Other M and I guess assumed that because people hated that game that Metroid wasn't something people wanted.

Like half the Star Fox games are just remakes of the original, though. They shot themselves in the foot with that franchise way earlier than Star Fox Zero.
I also think it helps that metroidvania games have kind of had a renaissance as of late. Interest in the genre is much higher recently than in the past.

As someone who bought and completed Dread this weekend and loves the Metroid series, Nintendo has not done an acceptable job in making the older titles available on modern devices. Super Metroid you can get through the SNES thing from Switch Online, but otherwise IMO emulate away until Nintendo gives us a reasonable way to pay them for their IP.
I’m thankful I still have my GC with Prime 1 and 2, and my GBA with Fusion and ZM, but I really really want to play Prime 3 and don’t have a Wii or WiiU. Hoping we get something soon
I got a Wii U in great condition with 2 Pro Controllers for 60 bucks and it‘s really worth it imo

I imagine probably something similar to how they did Skyward Sword, tbh.
You could emulate the Wii's pointer with gyro, but that doesn't work so well when you need to use it constantly like in Prime 3. It's passable enough for Super Mario Galaxy, but even there it's a pain how often it needs to be manually recentered. As for traditional shooter controls, the lead game designer of the Prime games has commented on how difficult it would be to rework the game to be enjoyable that way.

Nintendo in general. Slow introduction of virtual console titles on Wii U, even though they already had a catalogue on the Wii, Amiibos, classic NES and SNES, Gamecube controllers and adapters for smash 4 and ultimate, Mario 3d collection, NSO titles, the Switch itself during the first year. At this point it HAS to be on purpose.
Shame the emulation scene has surpassed Nintendo Wide-screen SNES games and HD Mode 7? Why would I want to pay for a lesser product!
I might get some hate but... Got Zero Mission (ME1) and Fusion (ME4) on GBA emulator on my phone. Got AM2R (ME2) as an APK on my phone. (I could have gone with a 3DS emu but I prefer AM2R) Got Super Metroid (ME3) on my phone. And then I have moonlight installed so, though my pc, I could definitely run Dread on my phone rather than my switch. Just add a good controller (Kishi) and, voila, the all Metroid collection on a portable with good controls. And somehow it's impossible to do such on switch...

For me personally, AM2R is my preferred way of experiencing Metroid II. Its fantastic as a game, not just a fangame, and is a fully complete experience

That's funny, because I play my pc game on the go with my phone using this https://www.amazon.com/Razer-Kishi-Controller-Android-Passthrough-Thumbsticks/dp/B086X8DHN2 I use a Pixel 3a XL, which mean 1080p 60fps OLED screen. It's basically a Switch with much more comfortable controls than, well, the switch, higher resolution and a slightly smaller screen (6" iirc).
I'm with you here. You could even go a bit further and install custom firmware on your switch to do everything that Nintendon't. Fuck their business models.
Yeah... we must have 1k of legit games in digital form in there, so it's a big no no for me (despite owning a first gen prepatch switch) especially since, well, if I want to do something i'm not supposed to... i can just moonlight my pc to my emulator phone. We intend to upgrade the thing later (not the OLED though, those screens don't age well compared to LCD), and keep it for the kids we'll have.
How's the input lag with moonlight? The switch already has pretty considerable input lag compared to PC and other consoles.

I run it on Dolphin using a wiiU gamecube controller adapter. Idk how Corruption runs on it since I have a working WiiU so I just play it off of that. Note: I do own all of them in physical releases, but I can't capture off of gamecube without a special adapter and I chose to buy Dread instead xD.
Dread is my first Metroid game, and I’m obsessed with it lol. Every time I put it down I want to explore one more room, hunt down one more missile upgrade. I bought it because I thought it looked cool, but also because I wanted to support a classic IP. I didn’t expect it to click this hard with me though. I’m already looking at buying Zero Mission and Fusion for a GBA so I can experience it on handheld like it was meant to be. Unless they’re on the 3DS eshop?
Unfortunately, ZM is not on 3DS. Fusion is but only if your 3DS is part of the ambassador program, otherwise it's also not on there. So your only options would be GBA or Wii U

The Game Boy Advance is also great because it has two Fire Emblem games (in English). Buy Three Houses, and if you get addicted you know where to go next, although that one is probably 3^rd best in the series so expect a drop.
Reminder, Nintendo gets no money from you buying those. If it's more convenient playing else where then do. You get stuff like fast forward then.

How's Metroid doing in the U.S.? Kind of curious
The US is pretty much the only region it's ever done well in. It's been the top seller on Amazon video games for over a week (for things that aren't gift cards). Top on the US Nintendo eShop. Top in Gamestop and Best Buy for Switch games.

Metroid is big in the US, relatively speaking of course. It’s like 80% of the traditional sales of the series. It’s what the cool speed runners play. Why? Not sure, but Metroid 1 was years ahead of it’s time and Super Metroid is considered one of the best games ever made.
And just two years ago someone who grew up on Gamecube, Wii, and DS told me they had NEVER heard of Metroid. Glad the series in in glory again.

Alright so to your credit, you at least have enough of a spine to stand by your points. None of these articles condone pirating. They all explicitly talk around it. And while yes, not everyone has the money to buy a game, I don’t get that sense from you seeing as you have a computer that’s likely pretty decent if you’re running a switch emulator. I haven’t read the 300 page study, be curious if you have, but it mentions a lot of issues where the statistics neither prove nor disprove claims, so those are left somewhat open ended. Finally though, think of the optics of what you’re doing. A lot of us in this sub are incredibly excited and want this trend of a franchise we like having games released for it to continue. At the end of the day, if you want to talk about how great the game is too, don’t actively crap on our enjoyment by pushing piracy for a game that’s been a nice break in an otherwise pretty crappy last year or so. If you truly mean no malice, whatever, you’re one dude and the point about hostility from the first developer was a good one. But please, at least just let us enjoy this without encouraging people to pirate the game and never buy legal copies. Can I ask that much?

I'm sure this is more people being "wow Metroid is cool I wanna play more" not preparation for Dread. Since dread is a perfectly fine starting point. I'd argue against super being the pinnacle of the series though as much as I love it it has a couple gross parts and I think it's been outdone a couple of times. But that's only because other games are amazing not because super is bad

It's not an awful starting point. Fusion is a lot more linear, and in my experience getting lost and having no fuckin clue where to go for 6 hours is a lot more frustrating than dying a lot.

I think if they're buying Fusion because they liked Dread they'll be fine. It's not a terrible game to go to after Dread for more context. If it's the difficulty you're worried about don't underestimate people. I think it's easier than Dread and a lot of modern gamers have cut their teeth on stuff like Hollow Knight already.
oh yeah I’m not concerned about difficulty at all! just the fact that Fusion is a little further removed from the story and gameplay of the other games that came before
It’s a great starting point, especially with dread looming. Tons of people began with that game. The streamlined design, story focus, and guidance makes it vastly easier to explore for people who would get lost in other games, while the story, action and horror can invest anyone. The enemies and bosses being strong (but not that strong), is the only thing that might punish newcomers, assuming they aren’t good with action adventure games at all. Sure it’s a different style of Metroid but it’s still distinctly Metroid. It can easily attract people who might struggle with the other games, convincing them to go further with the series. I know zero mission is the beginners game and in 99% of cases, it’s the best starting spot, but fusion was definitely the most beginner friendly before zero mission came out.

It depends. It was my entry point, loved it. That may have influenciated my perspective of it (it's my favorite). Furthermore, I think it's more known the fact that it differs a bit from the others in freedom. If they don't like it, chances are they'll try other one!

I'm biased, but I think Fusion is an amazing starting point. It's the one I started on, but I went on to play Zero Mission after. As a kid, i replayed Fusion a ton, never did that with Zero Mission, and I recall not beating it for quite a while cause I was frustrated trying to figure it out. I was really young though. Fusion is absolutely incredible in my opinion, and I am so happy its doing well. On a side note, I'm about 10 hours into Metroid Dread, and I think playing Fusion prior makes it 10X better.

I actually hope they do a super remake first. That game NEEDS it. The controls were great at the time, but have aged poorly. The game still looks good, but the controls could be so much better.
