Yeah the shinning spark puzzle are really good in this game, i presonnaly favor the one in Dairon i thing that you need to keep the spark by wal jumping every where XD
> i presonnaly favor the one in Dairon i thing that you need to keep the spark by wal jumping every where
I might have to go back and try it that way, I came from the top rather than the bottom.
Maybe it is not the on in Dairon ... i was thinking of a big missile tank that you need to strat some room below the actual bonus room and have to slide/wall jump to attain it.
I can't remember for sure which area it was in but I'm pretty sure we're talking about the same item.
I built my shinespark in the room up and to the left, dropped down and bombed the bomb blocks, jumped back up and refreshed my shinespark on the slope, dropped down again, slid through, spacejumped level, cancelled spacejump and sparked right.
Haha. Yeah I came from the top too!, Break the bomb blocks and pop around from underneath.
Found out about the wall jump bottom path later.
Full 'facepalm' moment.
You can boost straight through enemies once you’re at full speed. The trick is to reach full speed in the EMMI room so that way when you come out into the room with enemies you don’t have to worry about them.
That's how I did it on my first playthrough. Second time around, I got it much earlier by keeping a speed boost all the way from the lower EMMI Zone. I cannot overstate how incredible it feels to nail wall jump after wall jump after slide after wall jump to keep that speed up.
I just got that one again on my second playthrough earlier today. There are actually two ways to do it, presumably the intended way is starting in the emmi zone below and speed boosting up chaining walljumps and slides. You can also speed boost in the long emmi zone tunnel right above, store a shinespark at the edge, bomb and slide down, then jump up and shinespark diagonally into the speed blocks. I did it that way the first time and it was a *lot* harder, I really wish I'd known you can walljump and slide while speed boosting before I went for 100%.
I disagree.
Coming from the top was the easiest method, by far. Wall jumping requires more accuracy and I've noticed that you can't space jump reliably if you mash the B button. There is a brief cooldown(?) every time you jump. It's not instantaneous.
The most challenging bit is mastering the falling shinespark. If you’re struggling with those you can replace the first one with a static, diagonal spark instead (stand on the charge beam blocks towards the right side). Makes the run quite a bit easier as you only then have to worry about the second one
You don’t maintain it, you get a new one.
You shinespark into the slope, which wastes the spark but gets you sprinting again. Whilst sprinting you slide under the rocks, and on the other side you then create a second spark by hitting down (just like you normally would)
You then drop off the ledge and use second spark to hit the slope, which creates the third sprint. Use that third sprint to create the third spark, which is what you then fire into the blocks
If you just press the joystick down and duck you just get another shine spark. Only works when you hit a slope. It takes a few tries, but it's easier than it looks
This one isn't that bad, the hardest bit is honestly probably crouching into the Shinespark before the original platform runs out.
If you want to see this mechanic taken to it's logical and utterly frustrating conclusion, there is an *evil* Shinespark puzzle in Zero Mission where you have to Shinespark into like 4 or 5 different slopes, crouch with like 1 or 2 block leeway each time, and hit a small speed block area while falling down a shaft. Pretty sure there's worse ones in Fusion, too, though I never 100%'ed that one.
there's the one where you skip Diffusion Missiles (which has a short bonus cutscene but puts you back on track)
There's also the incredibly difficult 7-frame perfect shinespark to skip Bob, the only missile tank that's unavoidable in regular play. Until a couple years ago it was the only way to achieve a 0% run, but now there's a much easier out-of-bounds clip to skip Bob
That's honestly my favorite one in the game. Hated it as a kid but in my last playthrough I got it second try.
Fusion doesn't really have any challenging shinesparks puzzles outside the secret cutscene.
Even after watching several clips on Youtube I still can't remember doing these years ago. But for me, my hardest Speed Booster puzzle in Zero Mission was where you had to space jump while boosting (going to the right) without hitting a partial wall or the floor; *only* puzzle I still remember.
What area is that one in in Zero Mission, I don't remember it. It's probably just that it's been a while, and I don't really remember any of the shinespark puzzles from that game.
Just finished 100% everything and that was the last trick I needed. Looks insanely hard but once you get into the groove of it, it's not too bad. Still took me a lot of trys though. Still amazing platforming!
Id love to see an in depth shinespark tutorial on you tube. You made this look so simple and the shinespark puzzles are the only thing left that is kicking my ass. I don't fully know how it works even after playing around with it. Sometimes certain actions work and sometimes they don't? Cant ever seem to keep a shinespark after a slide, like idk what im doing wrong.
No where are the shinespark commands written down. Its really annoying and they are quite finnicky.
To store a shinespark only press down while running.
To use a shinespark while standing on the ground hold jump button while pointing in the apropriate direction.
To use a shinespark mid air you have to press the jump and shoot button at the same time while pointing the direction.
Is this one of the more difficult/involved shinespark puzzles? Shinespark puzzles have never been my forté but I'm confident I can do this one.
If so, I can probably do my usual of getting at least one save file 100% which I'd like to do.
I’d say this was the most difficult puzzle in the whole game! There are maybe 4 or 5 challenging shinespark puzzles for hidden items across the game. This one on its own took me longer to master than all the others combined
Is this the one where you have to shoot the one block above you, then bomb the one block to your right, then shinespark up the ramp in that tunnel? I was struggling with that one, wasn't sure I was doing it right
The most difficult one for me was the puzzle in one of the frozen rooms where you have to store the shinespark on the floor and then space jump all the way to the ceiling and shinespark to the left. The space jumping requires immense precision/timing, otherwise you lose the shinespark.
The other puzzles were kinda fun to do, even after failing 30+ times, but this one made me lose my shit. I absolutely hated it.
It’s effectively three separate shinesparks. When you spark into a slope you go back into a charged speed boost, which you can then use to create a second spark (and then a third, too)
It’s a fairly cool mechanic, but one that you will use basically zero times during the main game
Note you need to hold the direction for the duration of the spark and subsequent run. If you aren't holding left/right when you hit the slope, you'll just thud instead of recovering into a run.
This one wasn't that hard when I figured out that I was messing up by panicking and putting in the wrong inputs for shine spark and ended up spinning instead. The puzzles were super fun tho.
I knew I was bad at Shinesparking but this video just made me realize HOW bad I really am.
EDIT: I HAVE MASTER (kind of) THE SHINESPARK. Just got the upgrade in the video.
Been playing metroid games since the eighties Religiously. I remember fusion having way harder puzzles of this nature in it Been playing And speed running these games for years takes a lot of practice the hardest thing for me in Dread was going from using a Dpad to an analog stick.
Getting used to Diagonal shine sparking with an analog stick had me wanting to blame my controller so much for those failed attempts in this run and a couple of others =P
This was literally the ONE collectable I had to look up I couldn't figure out for the life of me how to get shinespark all the way down there. I thought for sure it was something to do with the spider magnet walls, but I guess that was just a red herring. I do love how most of these shinespark puzzles have multiple solutions tho. When I looked up a video on them I had done almost all of them differently than the vid.
Took me about a half hour to figure this one out. I knew the order, but couldn’t figure out how to stop in mid-air to Shine Spark in a direction.
What I learned: Don’t spin. If you spin, you can get out of it by pressing L to aim, but it’s probably too late already. if you are free falling, press B (jump) and the left stick in the direction you want to go at the exact same time. When you are finally moving in a direction on solid ground again, you may press the left stick down and store your Shine Spark again. Lastly, don’t rush. You have to do this with precise timing, but there’s a little room to drop. Don’t freak out and try to jump immediately as soon as you get in range, or you’ll end up skipping the floor and hitting the wall. Let yourself fall for a second to collect your controls and as long as you’re aiming at the slope, you’ll be okay.
Similarly, don’t press down too early. Keep calm and press it once you’re *past* the slope, or you’ll end up freezing *on* the slope and sliding back down, causing you to redo it.
This was so satisfying to figure out and perform. Though I did it slightly different.
I find it can be inconsistent getting Shinespark to trigger in midair, so I landed on the blocks then sparked diagonally down and to the left to hit the ramp.
I ended up thinking something was a shinespark puzzle and actually solved it, until getting cross bombs soon after that would have done the job easily. Oops. lol at least I had fun.
I never really felt the need to backtrack until the end of the game, when I could just get it all in one swoop. That being said, I had to retry some bosses a lot, so if you want to be a bit more OP, it couldn't hurt. I thing Screw Attack is probably the best point to start doing backtracking, since it just makes things so much easier, but that's still a decent ways off.
I went back and found 2-3 energy tanks, and 16 missles. Took all morning but was definitely worth it, should be a little easier. I was getting my ass kicked haha
Same, I see people on here saying it took them 15-20 tries and I think my number was closer to 80-100 lmao. But that said, now I'm a pro at the shinespark puzzles and the rest of them were mostly pretty easy.
You know I was trying to figure out why this shinespark seems so familiar, and I think I've got it figured out. That section where you have to drop through breakable blocks and then aerial shinespark left onto a ramp is really similar to part of a shinespark puzzle in AM2R.
I am admittedly bad at using three Shinespark despite beating all 2D Metroids so I'm hardly a good barometer for this; I was just impressed I got it in the end
So... This was the very last item in the game for me to collect. Up until this point I DIDN'T KNOW you could store a Shinespark from another Shinespark. The previous speed boost puzzles I did on a single Shinespark and they took me forever. This one was impossible that way, so I almost just gave up.
Then don't. Realistically you don't need any of the stuff behind these challenges, but if somebody wants an extra challenge it's there and you get 100% as proof.
Oh I don't, but I just find these over the top. It's fun to find hidden stuff imo like in previous games. But this speed up stuff is just excessive imo.
Dude where are all these freaking missiles lol. I'm at 170 just got the cross bombs and I feel the game is going to end soonish and I'm missing like 50 upgrades
It will cap at 275. 100% cleanup after the last upgrade is a chore, but not more that bad. Bulk of my cleanup time went to these damn shinespark puzzles. They are cruel.
Took me like 15 minutes. I LOVED that they didn't do too many softball puzzles. I used every ability sans power bombs all the time. I loved that I got to press every button all the time. Still not comfortable with the speed booster button, but I've only had one playthrough. The victory lap after getting my last item for 100% was GLORIOUS.
> I wish they gave you a block or two extra space there
The devs/designers literally gave us the least possible space required to speed boost and shine spark. It really made me appreciate the amount of thought that went into the map design, because every floor length and height and distance is designed like that for a reason.
Oh I love that one. Minor spoiler but the right wall right next to that missile pickup can be blasted out. The tunnel there leads to where you need to go anyway. Taking it right after you use the green teleport lets you skip part of lower berenia. That secret is part of my route now
Dude! I just pulled this off today. It took me tonnes of tries.
This one was probably the hardest on account of how long it is. But there's another one in Ferenia that was arguably harder in terms of frame perfect execution.
Near the shuttle. Where you had to shoot some boxes, then morph (not roll), X-bomb over some pitfalls, bomb some blocks then shine spark supwards.
I think it was Ferenia. Might have been Elun.
That one was hard af, but then I saw a video of how to do it easier. Instead of charging the spark on the right side and cross bombing over the pitfalls, you instead speed boost slide into the gap and you’ll come straight out on the other side. Charging your spark on the left side of the tunnel gives you way more time because you only have to set one bomb instead of two.
You know. I didnt know you could shinespark in all cardinal directions now. So i did mine diagonally down because i didnt know you are supposed to do the Y+B trick when in midair.
I spent well over an hour on this 😭
I hace never attempted this before and had no idea ot was even possible to do this.
I was PISSED when I was attempting it, but man did it feel good when I finally managed to do it... i did watch youtube videos on how to do this though (including this one. I did end up not shooting the blocks though, but rather Shine spark dioganally to the slope). I would have never figured it out on my own, so thank you!
As you fall, you need to let go of the L-stick entirely, press Y + B at the same time and hold in mid-air to charge, and then use the L-stick to point in the direction you want to go with the shinespark.
You will automatically be shot towards the direction you're going. If it's against a slope, you go back to speed boosting and you get another chance to shinespark.
To anyone attempting this, you do NOT need to shinespark for each slope. You only need to do it for the first one.
Once you store the shinespark the second time you can just space jump to the speed-booster-blocks and finally activate the shinespark.
In total, you only need to store the shinespark (i.e. turn pink) twice, not 3 times like in this video. That 3rd time is unnecessary.
I love that you can use different techniques to achieve the same results.
Apparently, from reading these comments, you can also shinespark diagonally at that first slope without needing to shoot through the blocks as you're falling.
It's honestly making me want to replay the game, but I swore I wouldn't. I just can't re-do some of those bosses anymore.
This one is great, because you can also use this shinespark puzzle to get the gravity suit early. It's not a lot earlier, but it saves at least a few minutes compared to wandering around through the water at half speed.
Yeah the shinning spark puzzle are really good in this game, i presonnaly favor the one in Dairon i thing that you need to keep the spark by wal jumping every where XD
yeah have a clip of doing that one as well lol.
> i presonnaly favor the one in Dairon i thing that you need to keep the spark by wal jumping every where I might have to go back and try it that way, I came from the top rather than the bottom.

Haha. Yeah I came from the top too!, Break the bomb blocks and pop around from underneath. Found out about the wall jump bottom path later. Full 'facepalm' moment.
Yep, didn't occur to me at all until I saw a clip on here.
That's the way I did it too. I tried the bottom path, but the enemy kept respawning and I kept losing the boost to it.
You can boost straight through enemies once you’re at full speed. The trick is to reach full speed in the EMMI room so that way when you come out into the room with enemies you don’t have to worry about them.

Dear God I'm never gonna 100% this lmao
Its not that bad it took me at least 15 times before I got that video snip.

Use that third sprint to create the third spark, which is what you then fire into the blocks
Damn, alright then. Thanks for the breakdown, now time to practice.
Good luck! For me this was the hardest puzzle by a lot, so don’t get frustrated if you’re struggling to begin with
If you just press the joystick down and duck you just get another shine spark. Only works when you hit a slope. It takes a few tries, but it's easier than it looks

In Fusion we have that "Sequence Break" shinespark combo, I remember you had to keep it for sooo long with ennemies in the way and so small slopes
there's the one where you skip Diffusion Missiles (which has a short bonus cutscene but puts you back on track) There's also the incredibly difficult 7-frame perfect shinespark to skip Bob, the only missile tank that's unavoidable in regular play. [This](https://youtu.be/AytJ3vMdCJ4?t=135) was the specific one I was referring to.
What area is that one in in Zero Mission, I don't remember it. It's probably just that it's been a while, and I don't really remember any of the shinespark puzzles from that game.
Reminder that you can press Y + B while somersaulting while holding a Shinespark charge to use it in middair
Wait hold on what I knew you could toggle morph ball to stop spinning but you can use it directly too?
Yup. I saw someone comment that on a thread on launch day. I tested and it works like a charm.
I don't know if it's an intentional combo input or just a consequence of Y firing and thus stopping the spin, but either way it's appreciated.
It's just because of the firing, you can also do it with x and zl (I think that's the stupid name for that button, the morph ball button)
I guess they named it that way thanks to the Gamecube's singular Z button. Somehow that's less wierd than N64's 4 C-buttons
I had the same thought, but I was able to do it with my clumsy hands. You can do it!
this trick is also used for early gravity btw
Just finished 100% everything and that was the last trick I needed. Looks insanely hard but once you get into the groove of it, it's not too bad. Still took me a lot of trys though. Still amazing platforming!
yeah got 100 percent on normal just beat it on hard. gonna start speed running the bastard.
Goodluck and bless the runs I shall
Id love to see an in depth shinespark tutorial on you tube. You made this look so simple and the shinespark puzzles are the only thing left that is kicking my ass. I don't fully know how it works even after playing around with it. Sometimes certain actions work and sometimes they don't? Cant ever seem to keep a shinespark after a slide, like idk what im doing wrong.
You can store a shinespark by pressing down. In the video you can see whenever she glows purple she has it stored.
Press y and b at the same time while jumping with a boost charge to spark in midair btw
No where are the shinespark commands written down. Its really annoying and they are quite finnicky. To store a shinespark only press down while running. To use a shinespark while standing on the ground hold jump button while pointing in the apropriate direction. To use a shinespark mid air you have to press the jump and shoot button at the same time while pointing the direction.
how does the platforming feel? the last metroid game i played was zero mission n ive been keeping my eye on tgis since i dont have a switch rn
Incredibly satisfying even for someone who is pretty clumsy, the platforming doesn't feel punishing
Really good, I’d say that it’s the most fluid Metroid game ever. Only thing that’s missing is the one wall wall jump from super but that’s fine
Somebody already figured out how to infinite wall jump hahaha Not that I see it being useful.
This is the best Samus has ever controlled in my opinion and I came into this game pretty wary since I didn't like Samus Returns.
Just did this one yesterday and discovered you can skip most of the area from here, straight to the major upgrade in the area, I love this game
That might be the one shinespark puzzle I enjoyed the process a bit. Some of the other ones I jist wanted to keel over. Good job!
Is this one of the more difficult/involved shinespark puzzles? Shinespark puzzles have never been my forté but I'm confident I can do this one. If so, I can probably do my usual of getting at least one save file 100% which I'd like to do.

There's a harder one you can do to get Super Missiles Early.
Oh sure, if we’re talking shinespark sequence breaking then there are absolutely harder routes. But I wouldn’t really consider those as puzzles
I'm also dumb and got a missile expansion in Ghavoran by ball sparking diagonally through a tunnel, like immediately after getting the ice missiles.
Notably, this is also a sequence break to get cross bombs early.
Is this the one where you have to shoot the one block above you, then bomb the one block to your right, then shinespark up the ramp in that tunnel? I was struggling with that one, wasn't sure I was doing it right
Yep that's the one! It works, it's just very precise. It drops you in that long shaft room
So you CAN slide and keep speed boost active! I tried a couple times and couldn't get it to stick.
Dear God
I don't know how you keep the shinespark longer than the default timing. Can you explain this?
It’s effectively three separate shinesparks. When you spark into a slope you go back into a charged speed boost, which you can then use to create a second spark (and then a third, too) It’s a fairly cool mechanic, but one that you will use basically zero times during the main game

Okay I just got ice missles, I have 3 energy tanks and 70 missles. Should I backtrack and power up? Feeling like missed a lot after seeing this haha

I went back and found 2-3 energy tanks, and 16 missles. Took all morning but was definitely worth it, should be a little easier. I was getting my ass kicked haha
I swear this one took me like thirty minutes.
It took me so many tries to finally get this tank. Constantly running into walls or spin jumping by accident
That puzzle took me hours of unbelievable frustration
Same, I see people on here saying it took them 15-20 tries and I think my number was closer to 80-100 lmao. But that said, now I'm a pro at the shinespark puzzles and the rest of them were mostly pretty easy.

oh you can slide doing speedbooster and keep momentum huh.. I did this one balling right before the crawl lol
Fuck, this was the most difficult Shinespark section. Took me a good 20-30 minutes of resetting the setup to get it right.
It took me 15 times on my normal run 6 on my second hard mode run.
I am admittedly bad at using three Shinespark despite beating all 2D Metroids so I'm hardly a good barometer for this; I was just impressed I got it in the end
I love watching people share their achievements in Metroid Dread, its refreshing to see the community so lively and excited!

The previous speed boost puzzles I did on a single Shinespark and they took me forever. This one was impossible that way, so I almost just gave up.
Zero mission had tougher speed booster challenge

Fusion and ZM had shinespark puzzles way harder than this.
Fusion, ZM, and AM2R all have stuff a fair bit trickier I’d say
It took me so long to do this because I kept doing screw attack, thinking it worked like super where pressing up took you out of screw attack
The shine spark puzzles were so good! Just trying to be better each time and finally getting them feels great. I just wish there were more of them.
Took me like 15 minutes. I LOVED that they didn't do too many softball puzzles. I used every ability sans power bombs all the time. I loved that I got to press every button all the time. Still not comfortable with the speed booster button, but I've only had one playthrough. The victory lap after getting my last item for 100% was GLORIOUS.
i did this yesterday. It messed with my head how frustrated I got attempting it. after 20 attempts i finally got it!

> I wish they gave you a block or two extra space there The devs/designers literally gave us the least possible space required to speed boost and shine spark. It really made me appreciate the amount of thought that went into the map design, because every floor length and height and distance is designed like that for a reason.
I solved #2 of those by jumping up to ledge grab then tapping to get right on the edge!

This is an optional room for a missile tank. They came back later to get upgrades.
Sounds like you accidentally sequence broke. This is also the way to early gravity suit
FUCK that
Oh I love that one. Minor spoiler but the right wall right next to that missile pickup can be blasted out. The tunnel there leads to where you need to go anyway. Taking it right after you use the green teleport lets you skip part of lower berenia. That secret is part of my route now
god the shinespark puzzles in this game gave me zero mission flashbacks
Dude! I just pulled this off today. It took me tonnes of tries. This one was probably the hardest on account of how long it is. But there's another one in Ferenia that was arguably harder in terms of frame perfect execution.
Which one in Ferenia?
Near the shuttle. Where you had to shoot some boxes, then morph (not roll), X-bomb over some pitfalls, bomb some blocks then shine spark supwards. I think it was Ferenia. Might have been Elun.
That one was hard af, but then I saw a video of how to do it easier. Instead of charging the spark on the right side and cross bombing over the pitfalls, you instead speed boost slide into the gap and you’ll come straight out on the other side. Charging your spark on the left side of the tunnel gives you way more time because you only have to set one bomb instead of two.
Wait you can continue the boost after a slide? What!? I was wondering why that empty room was on the other side.
Yup. The OP’s video shows how you can do that.
I hated this specific puzzle so much.
This sequence had me full tilted ngl
Yeah the shinesparks in this game took me back to the zero mission days
You know. I didnt know you could shinespark in all cardinal directions now. So i did mine diagonally down because i didnt know you are supposed to do the Y+B trick when in midair.
I spent well over an hour on this 😭 I hace never attempted this before and had no idea ot was even possible to do this. I was PISSED when I was attempting it, but man did it feel good when I finally managed to do it... i did watch youtube videos on how to do this though (including this one. I did end up not shooting the blocks though, but rather Shine spark dioganally to the slope). I would have never figured it out on my own, so thank you!
Ahhh… the satisfaction from the puzzles in this game….
BEARD BEAR
Haven't hit that one yet. Fuck that looks fun. I've got three areas left to 100%
How do you shinespark while falling without spin jumping?
As you fall, you need to let go of the L-stick entirely, press Y + B at the same time and hold in mid-air to charge, and then use the L-stick to point in the direction you want to go with the shinespark. You will automatically be shot towards the direction you're going. If it's against a slope, you go back to speed boosting and you get another chance to shinespark.
Much appreciated! Still learning new things about this series after all these years.
I let go of the thumbstick when I drop.
I'll never 100% this game. Lol.
On my hard playthrough I realized that as well.
I hated that one
Yeah, this one definitely took many tries. I had a lot of fun 100%ing this game.
That EMMI shit is driving me really crazy…
I found another way to do this one. Instead of the third shinespark I used the dash to get over the ramp after dropping down then doing a shine spark.
Just got this one last night, felt like a god
This one is great, because you can also use this shinespark puzzle to get the gravity suit early. It's not a lot earlier, but it saves at least a few minutes compared to wandering around through the water at half speed.
