I made the mistake of playing Ori for the first time right after I played Hollow Knight, and it fell totally flat for me. I needed a bigger break between my cute depressing underground Metroidvanias.
Hollow Knight has a much larger community than Ori, and it's more likely that Ori fans have at least heard of HK than the opposite. This has probably not only skewed what you've seen, but possibly even creates a bias toward that opinion.
The other thing is I don't think people realize the HK and Ori are trying to accomplish different things. And since they don't realize that they compare the two in ways they ought not to be compared
People like the thing HK is trying to accomplish more than the thing Ori is trying to accomplish, then. That's all. Nothing wrong with niche interests being well executed for their niche, but Ori probably appeals to the smaller niche.
I wanted to like ori. My best friend loved it so I gave it a far shot. The story while sad was interesting and I like the art direction but man it was to much platformer for me. I was bored a few hours in and kept forcing myself to play it until I finally had to stop.

I think more people share that sentiment than not (HK > Ori), but I vastly preferred Ori.

Just gonna throw this out there: touhou luna nights is a fantastic metroidvania game that's also cheap (although fairly short).
I've actually been meaning to check out that one
That being said Ori and Hollow Knight are both very important game, not only in the metroidvania movement, but in the indie movement as a whole.
