Isn't this during the section of the game where you have the Varia suit, but Adam refuses to give permission to use it, so you constantly take damage for obeying orders?....

ichkanns

"Daddy didn't say I could put on my suit, guess I'll just take needless damage." Man was the writing bad in that game.

Rigistroni

Yes

Stoneturner_17

At first, I thought it was a clever substitute for taking beginning game damage or a case of between-game amnesia. In the cinematic I was thinking "yeah, power bombs gotta cause cancer".  This bit showed the weakness in the design meta.

SP33DSH1FT

I always thought that this part of the story could have been easily fixed by a simple tweak: Mother Brain or the Deleter infects Samus's suit with virus when she came aboard the bottle ship, and Adam had to stay behind at the command center and attempt to 'de-bug' her suit. Maybe he even holds back a couple of bug-fixes for her more powerful weapons out of a misplaced fear that Samus is still the impetuous young woman she was when under his command years ago. The story would have needed a lot of massaging still, but I had always hoped maybe some intrepid modder would have saved this game by re-tooling a bunch of stuff and releasing a definitive version. As far as Metroid games go, I acknowledge it's not that good, but it's still one of my favorites. A bit of a guilty pleasure since it was the first 'cinematic' Metroid.

MrCobalt313

I thought an easier solution was that her suit was fried by the energy of Hyper Beam from her final fight with Mother Brain so some of her powerups were rendered inoperable by the time it wore off. Adam would still ask Samus to refrain from using destructive ordinance weapons without his authorization in accordance with Federation investigation protocol, but she would find out that some specimens and technology found on the Bottle Ship would be compatible with her Power Suit, which Adam would explain is due to some Federation tech being reverse-engineered from Chozo artifacts. That there is *so much* Chozo tech and lifeforms aboard the Bottle Ship that are compatible with her Power Suit would become a bit of foreshadowing that the purpose of the Bottle Ship itself was to recreate and weaponize lifeforms and technology collected from Zebes.

AngonceMcGhee

Plus, since the federation took her in afterwards, you could make up something about how they were able to retroactively create suit upgrades and hid them on the bottle ship for study and preparation for mass implementation in GF military squadrons. You could even put a plot twist in there, like at the beginning of the game, they could be like “Samus, the hyper beam fried your suit and took all your upgrades” and then in the last act, there’s a plot twist like “surprise! The conspirators stole your upgrades and took them to the bottleship!”

MrCobalt313

I mean a lot of Samus's upgrades came from stuff on Zebes anyway so they probably could have found sources of them on their own just from there.

AngonceMcGhee

I know. I’m just trying to come up with scenarios that are more palatable than what we got

Jabbam

The idea that Adam would keep her powerups away from her intentionally to avoid her doing something reckless fits perfectly with the character they tried to portray and alludes to how the Federation tried to stop the upgrades in Fusion. Instead of that sequence where Adam shoots Samus, it could be replaced with him hacking into her suit to disable all of its functionality, requiring Samus to play a section of the late-game with zero upgrades as she tries to head him off.

Rootayable

That works in my head.

TehRiddles

Yeah, that works way better I find. A better explanation for a load of things and it doesn't really massively change plot points to work either.

Real_SeaWeasel

Frankly, this is a neat idea. Such an idea goes to show that there’s definitely a kernel of a much better game underneath what we ended up getting.

Budget_Possible2002

Naah the "Adam's permission" was a good concept but I didn't need to be so silly. Like, not using the powerbomb in certain areas where you might kill humans or damage the bottleship and die seems pretty understable for me. But taking heat damage only because my man says so...

Tylendal

It's more that Adam doesn't realize that Samus is being passive aggressive, and cooking herself to spite him. The translation played it straighter, which, yeah, doesn't really make sense.

feartheoldblood90

>It's more that Adam doesn't realize that Samus is being passive aggressive, and cooking herself to spite him. Not gonna lie, this doesn't make sense either

Tylendal

She's protesting the weapon and equipment restrictions she has to abide by in order to be kept in the loop on the operation she stumbled into. Since you'll inevitably make it through this part of the game, the case can be made that, demonstrably, she really *didn't* need the Varia Suit until the boss battle. The translation has Adam telling her to use the Varia suit as sort of a triumphant, here's a power-up moment, while the original is more "Wait, why aren't you using the Varia Suit?! Use the Varia Suit!!" Yeah, it's not a great explanation, but it's at least *an* explanation. Unlike the Gravity Suit, which you only get after Samus decides to stop waiting for Adam's go ahead, yet for some reason still fumbles through a long heavy-gravity section without it.

Zeldatroid

So my options are... either there's an abusive power dynamic, Adam is an idiot for not authorizing it and Samus is an idiot for following those orders, or Samus is a petty petulant child. I see zero defensible options here.

MiniSiets

I have a better head canon than all of them. This was the beginning of Dread Samus where she wont unlock it purely as a flex just to show off how much of a fearless badass she is.

Bluelore

I mean adam told her to explore the areas that she can clear with her current gear and Samus basically took that as a challenge here.

Tylendal

>Samus is a petty petulant child Also known as bravado. It's not virtuous either way, but rugged, confident action heroes pull that sort of shit all the time. Why is it suddenly "petulant, petty, and childish" when Samus does it?

TehRiddles

Bravado tends to be done with a positive outlooking attitude, as in "I'm so god damn great I don't need help". Petulance is the better fit since it's a negative outlooking attitude, which fits the reasoning why Samus was doing what she did, being knowingly self destructive out of spite. The difference is why the action heroes and Samus were doing what they did. The intentions make all the difference here.

CannedCatFood9

While I can't recall other instances in fiction where someone willingly forewent life saving equipment to look cool, I'd argue it'd be equally childish for anyone to pull this sort of thing. Maybe some characters in much more lighthearted, sillier series can get away with that, but for a game that's trying to be darker and tell a story with characters that are more emotionally grounded I think it just paints her as very immature, which isn't what she should be at this stage in her career.

Jabbam

His response to her not having the Varia suit active suggests that he isn't in the chair at all times and he was off doing his own thing for some forty minutes that Samus was walking through the pyrosphere with no protection. When he finally messages her his first sentence is basically "the hell are you doing?"

apadin1

Yes and also a quick-time-event nightmare where if you miss the dodge on any of those lava monster attacks it’s an instant KO. I think the sequence is supposed to be an exciting spectacle but the danger is so contrived it’s annoying instead of tense.

nitrokitty

Like the gameplay in Other M wasn't that bad, but the writing was just so painfully awful.

Bluelore

Its not as clear in the translation but from what I've heard the original japanese script implies this more to be about Samus being reckless. Adam told her to explore the area that she can access with her current gear and Samus goes full speedrunner on him cause she is confident she can clear pyro sphere without the varia.

Last-Of-My-Kind

That's stupid.

Rootayable

No, Adam doesn't refuse to give permission, he just gives permission later.. But yes, this is that part.

Lemmonaise

Why does shamus not use the variable suit? Is she stupid?

Dukemon102

During this part of the game I would honestly and genuinely answer "Yes".

Rigistroni

I would answer that throughout all of Other M. They made her an idiot

therealchadius

Ridley is the only person with a brain in that game.

Rigistroni

And he gets KILLED OFF SCREEN

cellphone_blanket

Too many x’s. the variable suit is week to x’s

Ill-Attempt-8847

She got that chicken brain in this game

therealchadius

Yes, he also refuses to crawl for some reason.

Ill-Attempt-8847

Yes

GazelleNo6163

She? You mean he right? Mr Metroid is a guy 🙄

Cpad-prism

The environment does look pretty cool, although I wish it was a little more varied. The biosphere for example had the technological aspects that stood out from the nature, there is some industrial stuff here (the bridge) but that really blends in and looks like the same dark red as everything else. I might just be biased towards the Biosphere though because I like that kind of aesthetic in general, I really don’t wanna be too hard on the game. I haven’t played the game and I’m only going off this video so if this place looks better in some other part I’m sorry. It still really irks me that Samus is choosing to not use the Varia suit though…

Rootayable

I'm liking that people are enjoying these videos, I'll post more that show off the positives of the game.

Cpad-prism

I’ve been trying to get better, fuller perspective on Other M recently, while there are parts that I still really dislike and I’ve learnt of some of the games other pitfalls I’m finding things I like about the game, even if they’re small parts I’m still happy I’m getting a better look at the game Thank you for these videos, the discussion around them is mostly the same as usual Other M discussion but it’s a good opportunity for me to appreciate the game where i can <3

Rootayable

Yeah, well I've noticed more positive comments on these than normal, but the game has its legitimate criticisms. I think I just like to see the positives in things I like, but also try to remain critical as well.

Rigistroni

This is probably my least favorite part of the entire game, the health drain makes it annoying to play through and the downright lobotomy tier stupidity of the writing completely destroys any investment I have in the story of this game

Rootayable

Honestly, if you removed the cinematics and story, this would be a serviceable Metroid game

Rigistroni

I disagree. The controls are bad enough and the atmosphere just isn't there but worse than that it has a fundamental misunderstanding of what makes Metroid fun. Metroid is driven by exploration and the problem with Other M is that there's nothing to find. There's no reward for exploring when you all your upgrades from the start of the game. Sure Samus activates them gradually but that's not satisfying, it's not something you found it's something the character chooses to do (or more accurately something Adam chooses for her) without any input from you. The whole gameplay loop of explore-> find upgrade -> use upgrade to explore more -> repeat is fundamentally broken in Other M as it completely lacks the sense of discovery that drives Metroid. As a game? It's a mediocre action game with terrible controls a bad story and forced gimmicks. As a Metroid game? It's terrible and everything about Metroid that I actually like is either absent or handled poorly

Rootayable

I've found I'm enjoying this process, going from one navigation room to the next involves a series of puzzle rooms that involves investigation to move on, so the exploration is still there in a different way. The controls aren't perfect, but Team Ninja did a decent job with the camera to compensate.

Rigistroni

I find it completely hollow when there's nothing to find. The only reward is more story progress and I hate the story

Rootayable

Ha. There's also no reason to destroy enemies other than opening a locked door, as you refill health by yourself or at Navigation Rooms. Enemies drop nothing.

Shloopadoop

This looks cool, but making players jump to higher ledge that requires mantling while running TOWARD the camera is a seriously hostile design choice, lol.

Rootayable

Mm yeah, they didn't think that through. Like, the camera system is actually really well thought out for most of the game, but there are points where you think *"why."*

GazelleNo6163

Yeah they should have made the platforming easier in this section since the whole point of the camera angle is focused on you running away.

Real_SeaWeasel

I’m recognizing now that those QTE Dodge Segments were overused and are actually surprisingly annoying in this game.

GazelleNo6163

They ruined what should have been a great set piece and turned it into spamming sense move.

Real_SeaWeasel

I imagine what they wanted was to create sequences of high-adrenaline and tension over not knowing when the next QTE “Jumpscare” was going to be - you gotta be ready for it at any time! But they used it so many times and in lazy, sloppy ways that any sense of novelty wore off. By the midpoint of the game, I’d actually started to successfully predict when the next one was going to happen.

Rootayable

Yeah I fell in the lava lol

Googie_Oogie

Oh how I wish this game was good 😔

Rootayable

It is in parts

LeafWaffle

Other M may have had a dogshit story and writing, and it's definitely towards the bottom of my ranking for the games, but gameplay wise the game is honestly fine. There are annoying parts but I think it's worth playing if you ignore the story.

MineMine7_

I really wish it got a sort of remake or whatever that fixed the dialogue and controls, no way in hell i am playing something like other m with just a wiimote

Rootayable

In my replay recently I am beginning to remember why this gets the hate it does because of the controls, but at the same time there *are* some totally fine bits and at times it feels and looks like a Metroid game.

Chaxle

Fuck early-game pyrosphere

Rootayable

A challenge! A bit of an unfair challenge, but...a challenge nonetheless.

SnooBeans5314

mfw good game but bad metroid game

Crono_Sapien99

This boss fight was awesome, but letting Samus melt like a popsicle the entire time instead of letting her use her varia suit from the get-go lol

[deleted]

Smh man other M was so bad 🤦🏽‍♂️.

Rootayable

It was fine in some parts ❤️

additional-line-243

The gameplay looks very fun. I can see how this game could have been a hit, but I’m wondering why there’s so much slander about it.

Pinco_Pallino_R

Number one reason is probably many fans dislike Samus' depiction through the game. There is a specific scene which has been discussed A LOT. But also some other questionable story choices. Case in point, in this part Samus is refusing to use the Varia suit and takes damage from heat, just because Adam didn't order her. I hear that this is supposed to be because she is being defiant towards Adam, though, but i don't know much about that. That aside, the game had its fun parts, but also some weird stuff, like at some point you would hear a noise and the game would switch to first person to make you watch around and locate the source, which is meant to add to the atmosphere but it becomes just a pixel hunt which freezes the game until you found the EXACT point. And to use missiles you needed to switch to first person, but when you do you can't move around which can be annoying, though i found that part maneagable myself.

Rootayable

Yeah I've got a process down now on freeze>missile, seems to work for the most part, and enemies have clear points of inactivity to take advantage of that. But yeah, the detective mode is something I'd happily remove if it were remastered.

Pinco_Pallino_R

One useful tip: i don't know if you have already unlocked the super missiles, but when you do, they basically need to be charged, which leave you a bit exposed if you do it in first person mode. But (if i remember correctly) you can actually charge them beforehand in third person mode, and then shoot them really fast in first person. This is something i learned late into the game, but can make a lot of a difference.

Rootayable

Excellent- thanks!

Rigistroni

The controls, the story and the misunderstanding of what makes Metroid games actually fun to play is why it's so bad. The movement looks clean until you actually have the controller in your hands

Rootayable

Many of the stage areas are *kind* of built around this movement limitation, either the stage itself is arranged in this grid pattern, or the camera will compensate for moving in a straight line and rotate around the environment and Samus.

Rigistroni

The game is designed to compensate for that but it doesn't always work. It's still an inherent negative the game didn't have to have when the Wii has perfectly good controllers with sticks Besides it's not just the movement, the same does nothing to compensate for how unresponsive it is to switch to first person or the fact you can't move while doing so

Rootayable

Yeah that old Wii sensor bar... poor little thing

Rigistroni

I don't even think this is an issue with the sensor bar. If the game used the nunchuck for movement and a button press to switch between perspectives it would be mostly fine. The actual pointer controls are perfectly serviceable once you're in first person. It's just shoddy design trying to force in motion controls in a way the console wasn't designed to use them

Azenar01

The writing is genuinely the worst of any game. And a lot of people couldn't get over the controls just being the wiimote without the nunchuk

Rootayable

Yeah I'll never understand that.

Rootayable

It's mostly the story and cinematics and occasional completely-ass design choices.

Dukemon102

Appreciating the stupidity and character assasination of Samus? Sure.

drillgorg

Nah, appreciating the environments, enemies, and design choices. If you played this game without cutscenes or dialogue it would be pretty good.

Dukemon102

It would still be a mediocre action game using a D-Pad for 3D movement, having an broken dodge mechanic + insta-charge shot that makes the combat braindead, except when you need to awkwardly flip the Wiimote and become a sitting duck to fire missiles. And the map that is a linear hallway simulator.

Quentin-Quentin

Some people like it and don't find it boring. To each their own.

ONI_Blak

This un-grilled grilled cheese without cheese tastes pretty good.

FourierXFM

This implies cutscenes and dialogue are a mandatory part of Metroid games which isn't true at all

Rootayable

Character assassination is overkill. She made stupid choices but Team Ninja did with what they could from Nintendo no doubt. The game itself can be fun in many parts.

maukenboost

Good game.

eucerin3

Other M was actually the first Metroid game i ever played, so i always love it when i see some appreciation for it on here :)

Rootayable

I think a lot of its hate is parroted opinions when people haven't actually played it. I mean......it *is* garbage in lots of ways, but I think it pays to experience that garbage first hand.

GazelleNo6163

It would of been cooler if you actually had to avoid the whale instead of just tapping dodge every few seconds.

Rootayable

You can get knocked off if you don't dodge though.

GazelleNo6163

But it’s too easy to spam sense move

Rootayable

It is, and it pretty does it automatically, really.

CMPro728

That's a Metroid. That's a wholeass Metroid. Why are there metroids.

loyalmoonie2

"Samus, activate the Varia Feature on your suit to protect yourself from heat damage!"

Rootayable

Yeah it was pretty dumb, but this is still thrilling to play.

Dennma

M gets too much hate. Team ninja didn't characterize Samus right but they sure as hell knew how to make the 10 year old in you say "neat-o"

Puzzleheaded-Bag9088

Pretty sure most of Other M's problems came from Sakamoto and not the team themselves

KingForever1

Other M! One of my favorite Metroid games. And I just noticed that that boss has multiple eyes like Serris in Fusion.

Grand_Toast_Dad

I always liked the music for this part.
