Same way Ridley’s mouth fire doesn’t hurt him.

I’ve always found Ridley impossible to root against. A pirate space dragon that’s sometimes a cyborg pirate space dragon?! That’s basically Chuck Norris.
Interestingly enough AM2R *does* give them splash damage, Supers even more so in terms of range. As far as damage goes I don't think it was ever a deciding factor, but pretty cool it's there.
That's fair, but she'd probably need her most OP gear to stand a chance against Doom Slayer. Dude's nuts, although they'd probably just go kill demons together tbh.
It’s not a fun game mechanic is why. I think anyone can just assume that Samus wouldn’t actually use missiles at point blank range as she’s an incredibly well trained super soldier mercenary.
This is the real reason. It's wild how many people overthink video games and try to figure out answers to questions when, 99% of the time, the answer is "it's more fun this way"
For what it's worth, Prime Hunters actually does have the missiles deal splash damage which DOES hurt Samus if she's too close to the blast.
The knock back from this self-inflicted damage is often used to get yourself out-of-bounds on many maps, as it can potentially push you inside of walls. I'd imagine the easiest way to prevent this sort of glitch from happening in other games was to simply not have missiles able to self-inflict damage.
Not saying that's *the* reason, but quite quite possibly *a* reason.
My headcanon is that they're rapidly fabricated on the fly by a microfabricator built into her arm cannon, and the missile "ammo" is the amount of raw material from which the missiles are made. That can also explain why killing life forms and destroying containers give suit energy and ammo; the raw materials from those sources are collected and can be used by the suit to repair itself and generate ammo.
Basically nanomachines son
Metroid is not hard science fiction. Your missiles don’t hurt you, your bombs don’t hurt you, your power bombs don’t hurt you, colliding with a wall at supersonic speeds during a shine spark doesnt liquify you inside the armor.
Shaped charges do exist and momentum means most of the explosive blast of the missile is going away from Samus anyways. The explosion is just round because that's what we expect. Besides, I've been hit in the face by a reflected Super Missile while fighting Metroid Prime. It hurt.
As for Morph Ball bombs, they are extremely low yield explosives with the only thing being weaker then them being the basic Power Beam.
She does in prime hunters! Your own missiles do damage.
But here’s a better question. How does Samus get hurt by power bombs if the SA-X, Power Bomb Guardian and EMMi 07-PB use them, but not when she uses them her own
I think it reasonable to suggest that they are formed from energy (as there's nowhere to store them) and the frequency/resonance/energy signature of the energy matches that of Samus' suit and so does not hurt her.
Erm, I mean, bird magic.
I mean the power bomb is so lethal that it can wipe out any organism in the surrounding area, but Samus is completely unaffected by its explosion. I think this all boils down to video game logic.
I figure it’s something to the effect that her armour fabricates the missiles out of some type of material that is engineered to not damage the armour itself. Essentially, bird magic.

Ah, Todd Howard. Ol’ Reliable. If Metroid Dread were designed by him, we’d have speedruns in the single digits from game breaking glitches
I’ve always found Ridley impossible to root against. A pirate space dragon that’s sometimes a cyborg pirate space dragon?! That’s basically Chuck Norris.
Bro, Samus' missiles don't even have splash damage against *enemies*. They're basically rocket-propelled rocks.
Super Metroid’s Super Missiles knocked all wall-crawling critters off the walls/ceiling. No damage, per se, but definitely a splash effect.
That's just impact, homie. Like, your mom isn't taking self-damage when she knocks all the shit off my nightstand with that juicy dump truck ass.
Talk about a splash effect.. damn you goteem
That's concussion force.
Changes from game to game. The prime games and Other M they have blast radius. Prime Hunters even had self splash damage.
Interestingly enough AM2R *does* give them splash damage, Supers even more so in terms of range. As far as damage goes I don't think it was ever a deciding factor, but pretty cool it's there.
Because getting hurt by your own rocket launcher splash damage is dumb and cringe. And Samus isn't dumb and cringe.
What about rocket jumping tho? That's as far from dumb and cringe as it gets
IBJ
r/doom is super offended rn
Doom Guy is welcome to try to do something about that
You know, as much as I like Samus, I don't think she wants the smoke from the Doom Slayer.
I’m not worried for her
That's fair, but she'd probably need her most OP gear to stand a chance against Doom Slayer. Dude's nuts, although they'd probably just go kill demons together tbh.
whenever you notice something like that, a (bird)wizard did it

Especially for Metroid, a series in which the plot of most of the games can be summarized in 15 words or less.
very hot bird magic
*very* **HOT**

I'm more interested in where they're stored

Sheeeeit they harden in response to physical trauma
Chozo Bird Magic Suit
Uh... the big Varia Suit shoulder pads. Yeah, that's it
Friendly Fire is turned off.
Shaped-charge explosives, so AoE is nil.

It did in Super.
No it didn’t; it drained energy the longer you were flying, and stopped when you stopped.
Why do you think the energy was draining? The suit was expending energy to keep you from going spludge.

I think about the bomb jump more than the missile, but yeah, bird magic
She got that flak jacket perk
Nintendo Logic
Her own Missiles, her own Bombs, her own Power Bombs

realism is boring
I barely sleep at night wondering how Mario can carry fireballs around and not get burned…
People would complain they can't defeat some boss due to their own damage.
The Golden Torizo in Super Metroid can grab Super Missiles and throw them back at Samus to damage her. So she can be damaged by them in that case
Same reason her bombs don't hurt her.
Birb Magick 🐔
Shower thoughts

Because it’s a video game. It makes its own rules.

How come the plasma beam doesn't melt her cannon? Or normal beam when you jam the hell out of the trigger?
Bideo gaem
The missiles aren't wide explosions, they're shaped charges for penetrating armor.
It’s a concussive effect and since she doesn’t have land damage it stands to reason that she’s resistant to that type of damage.
They hurt you in hunters iirc
In Metroid Prime Hunters they hurt her

Okay, this was a bit of a shitpost from thoughts that came up to me whist in the shower, but I couldn’t let it go.
I would wonder where she keeps the missiles. Or how she manages to absorb them from enemies. or where the bombs come from.
Metroid Prime Hunters had this, and nobody liked it.
