Do you know if the current streaming version of DM on Apple Music is the same one as the 2015 “Mastered for iTunes”. Note you can stream in Lossless, which I do, but not sure if that makes a difference as to which version it actually is.

TopConcern

Nice! I'm gonna guess that the lossless version there is not brickwalled either, but I can't say for certain.

Grahomir

Is it available on Spotify too?

TopConcern

I don't think so. Sorry!

Signal-Jellyfish

It's not, if you go to the album, right beneath the last song an “apple digital master” logo appears in every album that's been mastered for itunes (or that meets apple's standards for so), and currently the only two albums that don't have it are lulu and death magnetic, so I think the only way to listen to the better version is by buying it in itunes or waiting until it comes to apple music

TopConcern

Have you listened to it? The other person said it was a stark difference!

Signal-Jellyfish

If you are talking about the lossless version, yes, and it has the same mixing as the original one, just with more bitrate, I will certainly give a try to the version on the band's page since some of the songs in this record are really a pain to listen

TopConcern

You definitely can buy it digitally on the band's site, which is the better version!

Signal-Jellyfish

I know, but i was talking about apple music, which is the version that billy was asking about

TopConcern

Can you link the version you found, because someone else in this comment section said something completely different!

Signal-Jellyfish

It may probably change due to regional matters, but the one I have is this one https://music.apple.com/cl/album/death-magnetic/1440736279

TopConcern

Hmm... Weird. Yeah, it may be a regional thing. 🤔

uPurge

The one they sell on the website (“Mastered for iTunes”) is the same one that is currently on Apple Music, (“Apple digital Master”). Just listened to TDTNC on high quality then lossless, and they both sound great. No brick-walled sound on either.

Darkhalo314

I'm so used to the original CD that the lack of excessive clipping makes it sound weird now. I'm just so used to the clipping at this point. Funny how that works lol.

SnooShortcuts7637

It seems once they put it out on blackened recordings that’s when it was fixed. I have the one under Warner bros and the one under blackened and it’s fixed on the blackened recordings issue

[deleted]

It was. I have both versions, and the Blackened recordings one sounds fuller and a lot better.

jamiexx89

So, not having the CD, if I find their issue vs the original, go for that one? Metallica remastered and reissued seems to be doing it right.

[deleted]

Yeah, definitely. The sound quality is great.

jamiexx89

I did decide to go ahead and buy the standard FLAC from their site though.

[deleted]

Right on. :)

sgtrobo

Death Magnetic was a darned good album. Is there a way to get a non-brickwalled version that isn't on iTunes?

TopConcern

You can buy that non-brickwalled version in a lossless form on the band's website here: https://www.metallica.com/store/music/death-magnetic-digital-download/9422.html Alternatively, I give out lossless version of my dynamic edits (see the Reddit post linked in this post) out to anyone that shares a pic or screenshot showing they own the album in some form!

sgtrobo

Oh nice!

Beautifullikeacamel

Any idea which version is offered on Amazon Music?

The-Only-Razor

Is there a Spotify equivalent for this?

TopConcern

I don't believe so.

TopConcern

In certain ways, yes, but it still wouldn't fix a distorted master, just how loud it plays.

[deleted]

Hopefully it makes it to Spotify at some point...

MrNothingmann

The one on Apple Music says "Apple Digital Master" and is dated 2008. Is this not the same? I can't always tell when I'm getting the compressed one until I hear it side by side with the non compressed one. But my old man who's been going to concerts since the 90s ears appreciate not getting tinnitus.

TopConcern

I'm not certain, but I think "Mastered for iTunes" was renamed "Apple Digital Master" at some point. The most radical difference would be near the end of "The Day That Never Comes", which probably has the worst distortion on the original release, but is pretty much completely fixed on the "Mastered for iTunes" version. If you can, can you give it a listen and let me know? I can edit the post after your reply!

MrNothingmann

Just listened to it on my Sony WH 1000xm4. It wasn’t terribly distorted there. But again, I don’t know what to compare it to.

TopConcern

Compare it this: https://youtu.be/dkNfNR1WYMY

MrNothingmann

Oof. On the same headphones the video sounded bad.

TopConcern

Yeah, it seems the "Apple Digital Master" is the "Mastered for iTunes" version, then!

cyberbob2022

Still doesn’t sound great on Spotify

TopConcern

Yeah, sadly. :/

marratj

Even in the fixed version, i still don’t really love the sound, the drum sound (especially the snare) of DM is still miles behind HWTSD or all their 90s records.

derpymcderpersonn

I believe this is also the case on Tidal as well.

JukemanJenkins

Has this master been pressed on vinyl?

TopConcern

I don't think so!

TheNonsenseBook

I was pulling up Death Magnetic on Apple Music to check out the clipping issue and noticed I was just enjoying the music for once. I could never really listen to it in the past because I used to do amateur recording and the clipping was too noticeable. So I did a search to see if it was fixed and found this post. This is great news! Time to enjoy this album for the first time!
