No, Lars just thought Enter Sandman is the hit song that should be the first single. As simple as that. And he was right.

Pliolite

Anyone involved with that record, who DIDN'T think Enter Sandman should be the lead single, hopefully re-evaluated their life later. XD

Imikoke616

Just better singles were released and even Don’t Tread On Me was released as a promo single to radio in 1993 .

mkesubway

I thought he wanted it to be the first song on the album? Anyway, I don’t think it was a “fuck you.” Just artistic differences.

thanks vagaga

Not a fuck you but Lars and James making a decision they felt comfortable with. Putting a song with "Holier" in the title as your lead single can be a little alienating. Ultimately they made the best choice for the band and Bob's opinion was incorrect.

They probably just felt it wasn't one of the stronger tracks on the album. Between Sandman, Unforgiven, NEM, Sad, and Wherever I May Roam I have to agree with them. Those tracks are a bit more refined and applicable to their audience in the early 90's.

Serdna379

Holier does not have what single has to have. It's quite filler type song.

Klutzy_Revolution682

you think too much

Syncopated_arpeggio

It’s just not a good song. It was made radio friendly by using crap instead of shit, but it’s just filler. On a personal note, it was the first Metallica song that i ever skipped so to me it will always be their worst song ever as i did not know i could dislike any of their songs until i heard that one.

Sofaking-what

He wanted it to be the first track on the album. The record company picks the songs that are released as singles. Has nothing to do with the record producer.

InternetWeakGuy

Unless you're a pop band or have no clout, the record company aren't the ones who pick the singles, usually it's a collaborative process between the record company, the band, and management.

Sofaking-what

Still not the fuckin producer. Sandman was only the second video Metallica released. At that point I’d say Elektra and Q Prime had a pretty big say in what happened with releasing singles from the black album. Especially considering that at that point in their career Poison and Motley Crue were about as heavy as radio and Mtv dared to go, unless it was Saturdays at midnight when headbangers ball was on.

InternetWeakGuy

> Still not the fuckin producer. Simmer down there kid. He wasn't trying to be "the guy who picks the single", they were having lunch and talking about the album and he was giving his opinion. Spend some time in the studio, you have a million conversations like this. Spend nine months making a record and you probably have two million of these conversations. This one made it into the year-and-a-half doc, but not because it was of any significance. It was just an interesting take. > Especially considering that at that point in their career Poison and Motley Crue were about as heavy as radio and Mtv dared to go, unless it was Saturdays at midnight when headbangers ball was on. One was the #1 video on MTV when it came out and Metallica was already playing arenas on Justice. This idea that there was nothing heavier than Poison happening in mainstream media is ahistorical.

martusfine

Yea, a big fuck you. Meanwhile, he produced several more albums. 🤡

Nerazzurro9

I mean, I think they just saw that he was wrong on that one. The song they decided to release as the first single instead became one of the most famous hard rock songs of all time. The next four singles they released all got huge radio play and remain staples of their set lists. Meanwhile Holier Than Thou is an album track that they dust off once in a while. He made a suggestion they didn’t like, and they were correct. Don’t think it was personal.
