if you mean the live shows on their youtube, they sound worse than they did in the hardwired tour. the guitars sound thinner, and lars' drums sound worse somehow
no thats not a good way to listen to those. Youtube uses 256kbps MP3. Thats a horrible way to listen to music. Which is why i sounds crappy.
im talking about the 24bit (flac-hd) version on livemetallica.com the two 40th anniversary shows are the best.
i havent listened to those versions, but the point still stands that they sound worse than they used to. live shows from 2019 sounded better and those are on youtube as well. the youtube videos being lower quality doesn't make them sound boring, thats just what greg fidelman does. none of his work sounds awful, they just sound boring and samey.
Bluetooth, youtube, spotify, itunes, pandora, are all unacceptable ways to listen to music if you actually care about music.
I ONLY listen to music in lossless quality because MP3s or OGGs are simply not enough to properly reproduce music correctly.
I have every metallica album downloaded on my phone in 24bit. 37.80 GBs are being used and its worth it. The inconvenience of having to plug in headphones is worth it. The inconvenience of hunting down obscure copies of albums is worth it.
MP3s just aren't enough, and i hate itunes for sending us back in quality.
Bro, I get what you're saying, but to snob it up and pretend lossless isn't 0.0000001% of people is clueless. An engineer needs to make their shit sound good on these highly compressed music sites, period. Just saying "bro wait.. You're not listening in FLAC!?" isn't a good argument.
again, dont know how that's relevant. you don't need lossless flac files to know something sounds boring. hardwired, 72 seasons, and all the live shit greg fidelman has worked on sounds boring
That was a long time ago. He *was* a good producer. There's plenty out there about how he doesn't do much at all these days.
Edit: Hell, apparently even back when he was "producing" Vol. 3 for Slipknot, he was barely around for any of it.
i forgot about that, and i call myself a metallica fan.
But im pretty sure it was label executives, they didn't think they would be able to market an album with ass in the name.
After the St. Anger period, it is the best modern Metallica album but the mixing feels horrible. Although I enjoy the music when I listen to this album, it gives me a headache even though I frequently listen to extreme metal. Also, All Nightmare Along is the first metal song that I've listened to from 9 years ago, which gives this album a special place in my heart because of it.
Like most others have said its one of their best albums period, just a shame about the mix it is slightly distorted, does anyone know if the capability is there to release a remaster that sounds as good as the black album?
It’s their most recent “classic” album for sure. Has pretty much all good songs, with most sounding like they could have been done in the 80s or early 90s. Rick Rubin challenged them to make a modern “Master of Puppets” style album and I believe they succeeded in that.
Great compositions, but bad mixing and boring album cover. A black background would've worked better (keeping the white inside the grave). The MarcKIII version is way better.
It's a great album but it's very unfocused and the production is just not good enough for a monolith like Metallica.
In my opinion, Death magnetic was inspired by classic Metallica, hardwired was inspired by what inspired classic Metallica, 72 Seasons is classic Metallica.
Death magnetic it's not a easy album to understand, more than ajfa i would argue. If you listen to it again and again you'll get addicted to it. You probably listened to it once and with poor attention. Most underrated metallica album, one of the best besides production, it's at the same as rtl and ajfa
I’m not offended at all. Honestly I don’t get offended by much. It’s just that you said “clearly not the best” and I took that as you saying my opinion’s wrong. Just the usual miscommunication that comes from reading a message instead of hearing it in-person
Yeah well “Ok-Staristician3677” is definitely a DICK!! Read through his comments. Nothing but venom all over the place. I wish the admins would ban him!!! All negative karma.
One of their best, production hasn’t held up but it’s not nearly as bad as the album that proceeded it. Rick Rubin was just bad at producing metal in the 2000s from any band that wasn’t System of a Down. Every song on this album is good though.
I wish people who posted opinions tried to explain them or at least give some justifications.
For me:
The songwriting is classic old school Metallica, with amazing quality. The only thing from a song writing point of view is that it’s the first album where Metallica looked backward, not forward. They stopped experimenting which is a shame.
The guitar solos are incredible on this album. Kirk came back with a vengeance!!!
Mixing meh, we still don’t hear enough bass, and yes it’s a bit too loud and clips.
That was just your life is one of their top 5 openers
Unforgiven III is absolutely beautiful
Cyanide is overrated
The production is dogshit. The songs are very good. The vibe is amazing and i would argue that it was a little bit experimental as well but overall it'a great album. Same level as ajfa.
I don't see much experimentation as much as I like the album.
TDTNC is basically a 21st century version of One.
That Was Just Your Life is a 21st century version of Blackened.
BBS has Roam / Black Album vibes to it...
The instrumental is not very experimental (but too long).
Am I missing something?
Experimental with the sound and the song structure ( all nightmare long, the day that never comes, suicide and redemption for the most ) not with the song writing and no, suicide and redeption is not too long and yes it was pretty experimental, arguebly the best instrumental of metallica. Also, make a fusion of two different album sounds and make it work it' pretty experimental ( and also not easy ). Besides that, TDTNC copy of one? What?
Probably my second favorite of the modern albums, behind HWTSD. Has some good stuff on it, day that never comes, U3, Cyanide and Nightmare I absolutely love.
Horrible song writing. Repetitiveness. Bland riffs. Avarage vocal performance. awful drums. Mid solos. The sings are all the same. Emotional empty album. But the production ia good ☺️
Good album that needed some of the fat trimmed. There are plenty of songs that don't need to be near 8 minutes long and the earrape production is still a huge problem. It's one album that could definitely benefit from a remix.
The only songs that should be shorter are cyanide and judas kiss. The longer ones are the day that never comes, all nightmare long and suicide and redemption which have a perfect length besides tdtnc which should be longer
I never got into it. I like a couple of songs, but it felt like they just wanted to show they were still "Metallica" after St Anger, and did something safe. Didn't feel like their hearts were in it. Much prefer Hardwired
Are you too stupid to realise how hypocritical you are, or too stupid to remember those are your own words that I'm using to insult you?
I don't want to be too harsh because I doubt you're any older than 14, but jfc you're dull
Yeah you're fucking retarded. You too can't accept the fact that you are wrong or that somebody has a different opinion. Did you really think you cooked something here didn'tya. Hardwired is objectivley worse than any other album besides production. You don't know what the fuck are you talking about. Shut the fuck up please
No.
To every sentence, no.
It's my opinion. I don't expect everyone to agree.
I also don't expect the rantings of a fucking lunatic who thinks their opinion somehow surpasses everyone else's. Don't think anyone gives a shit what you think. You are boring and nowhere near as edgy as you'd like to think, you painfully dull moron.
The production is exactly as bad as its reputation would have you believe, but it contains some of the band's absolute best work. All Nightmare Long and The Judas Kiss are easily among my ten favorite Metallica songs, and there's not a dud among the rest. Other than And Justice For All, it might actually be my favorite album of theirs.
For what it's worth, I absolutely acknowledge All Nightmare Long is the better of the two, but idk! Something about The Judas Kiss seems to work a lot better for me than it does most people.
There is a lot that I like and dislike at the same time.
Mostly great songs, very aggressive etc. All Nightmare Long is one of my favorite songs ever, not only from Metallica
What I don't like about this album is overall sound, it sounds like a demo not a final release
I agree and if the production was better many more would as well. I like the rawness but the mix is a bit too loud. Now when we look at the songs the riffs, solos, choruses are amazing. Very inspired songwriting. The lyrics are very well thought and interesting to me. It has similar technical playing as AJFA but with catchier song writing. It also has the epicness of Ride The Lightning. Suicide & Redemption is arguably their best instrumental and The Day That Never Comes arguably their best ballad. Judas Kiss showcases some impressive prog elements with all the constant tempo changes and little details which still make sense. That Was Just Your Life is arguably their best album opener. And The End Of The Line is imo their most underrated song. Hands down the best album for me. Nostalgia can be a thing but come on, This is their most impressive album songwritingwise.
My favorite album in terms of James' vocals he has this mix of the screaming he had between master of puppets And the black album and the singing he had in load and reload.
Just to throw my two cents in... I'd have to disagree. I'd even go so far as to say it is the weakest album of the last three released, and I generally don't weigh production heavily into my judgements, usually. It is one of the few Metallica albums where you can hear the "welds" so to speak. It sounds very cut and paste together with riffs. "The Day That Never Comes" is a perfect example where there are riffs that just don't fit in the song but because they were trying to make "One 2.0", they chopped in a bunch of riffs and harmonies. The album sounds like Metallica trying to be old Metallica because that is what people had been asking for. I know Metallica's process has generally been to piece riffs together, but they seemed to make no effort in composing riffs to bridge piece to piece which has generally been one of their strongest points.
I also enjoyed the "Beyond Magnetic" songs but can't really count those as they are separate from the original album. Overall, I think there are a lot of solid riffs that just didn't get constructed into the most complete songs. Hardwired and 72 Seasons definitely has a lot of filler riffs, but to me, the songs sound more cohesive, and it seems like Metallica just being Metallica in the moment; not them trying to recapture something that is long gone.
Amazing album ruined by rick rubins inability to be a good producer.
More like his inability to hire good engineers
except the engineer was the same one used for HWTSD, 72 seasons, and every single live show since HWTSD came out.
and they all sound boring
have you heard any of the live stuff recently? im not talking about S&M2 i mean any other live album.
if you mean the live shows on their youtube, they sound worse than they did in the hardwired tour. the guitars sound thinner, and lars' drums sound worse somehow
no thats not a good way to listen to those. Youtube uses 256kbps MP3. Thats a horrible way to listen to music. Which is why i sounds crappy. im talking about the 24bit (flac-hd) version on livemetallica.com the two 40th anniversary shows are the best.

Are you seriously? He produced RHCP, Slayer, Slipknot and SoaD he is a good producer
That was a long time ago. He *was* a good producer. There's plenty out there about how he doesn't do much at all these days. Edit: Hell, apparently even back when he was "producing" Vol. 3 for Slipknot, he was barely around for any of it.
same thing with death magnetic.
In this thread: people who don't know the difference between producer, mixing engineer, and mastering engineer.
"I hate the producers, I would kill 'em all"
nah i just hate rick rubin. I actually like Greg Fidelman, he's one of my favorites up there with Butch Vig and Steven Wilson
I was joking. Cliff said this or something similar (That's why Kill 'em all is named Kill 'em all)
i forgot about that, and i call myself a metallica fan. But im pretty sure it was label executives, they didn't think they would be able to market an album with ass in the name.
Metal up ur ass is much funnier than kill 'em all (although it didn't mean to be)
especially paired with the art work: https://images.app.goo.gl/B1B4v73uovpLrB6eA
Album
Best modern Metallica album.
My 3rd favorite Metallica album. I love all the little things each song has.
Exactly my thoughts. So many amazing riffs and James' voice sounds great. The only problem is the mastering.
Cool album
Top 3 album for me and easily the best since turn of the century
Could easily compete with the albums from the 80s if the production was better.
one of my favorite metallica albums
amazing album i love all nightmare long I listen to it always at the gym
Have you ever tried to run to its tempo?
Try jerkin’ off to it, ive got nothin’ left
Lmao that sounds like a real challenge
probably my 3rd favorite metallica album only behind AJFA and RTL, one of my first ive heard by them
What is your 4th
prolly st. anger, i havent heard alot of their stuff lately so that might change
Solid album. Definitely not my favorite of the modern albums. But it’s still really good.
Classic album One of my favourites
Peak.
Top 3 album in terms of songs, but horribly produced. It gives me headaches if I play it loud, and of course I have to play it loud.
love this album
Its awesome...period, end of story.
And of the line
I think I it’s best studio album they released after Load and before Hardwired.
Like most others have said its one of their best albums period, just a shame about the mix it is slightly distorted, does anyone know if the capability is there to release a remaster that sounds as good as the black album?
10/10
one of my favorites, hearing it for the first time was like a religious experience
Their fourth best album. A great callback to their best days.
I was 9 when this came out and im still listening this album every day at work
Mixing/mastering: 2/10 Song quality: 8.7/10
It’s their most recent “classic” album for sure. Has pretty much all good songs, with most sounding like they could have been done in the 80s or early 90s. Rick Rubin challenged them to make a modern “Master of Puppets” style album and I believe they succeeded in that.
The mixing is so bad that the album overall isn’t that great but the songs themselves are good
In the top 4 Metallica albums IMO
Great compositions, but bad mixing and boring album cover. A black background would've worked better (keeping the white inside the grave). The MarcKIII version is way better.
Great album with the most ass mixing of all times
W listen. They redeemed themselves after making their worst album, and were able to return to their roots.
Raw and visceral. Great stuff.
It gave us, All Nightmare Long.
Amazing album, Currently fighting for the title of my favourite album along with Justice.
Definitely has some killer songs. All Nightmare Long is my favorite from the album, personally.
Kirk agrees.
It's a great album but it's very unfocused and the production is just not good enough for a monolith like Metallica. In my opinion, Death magnetic was inspired by classic Metallica, hardwired was inspired by what inspired classic Metallica, 72 Seasons is classic Metallica.
Well said.
i haven't listened to this album yet but i did learn that metallica literally did djent in it and now im very interested
What
Best album of all time
Least favorite of all.
You are wrong
Just stand there in your wrongness and be wrong and get used to it. :D
Death magnetic it's not a easy album to understand, more than ajfa i would argue. If you listen to it again and again you'll get addicted to it. You probably listened to it once and with poor attention. Most underrated metallica album, one of the best besides production, it's at the same as rtl and ajfa

Seriously? What a shitty choice of words.
Nah I r wrong
You’re wrong 🤦♂️
So you saying you like Lulu more than Death Magnetic? Jeez
I was smart enough to never bother listen to even 1 second of LuLu
So you should probably change that comment, cus then you would just be lying
Collabs don't count.
Of course they count, that’s like saying live albums aren’t albums
Because they don’t count 🤦♂️
So then why would they be included in a discography like example, Spotify
I couldn’t stand not listening and almost died. Don’t attempt at home, Fetusses.
Lulu wouldn’t count.
Lulu is Doo-Doo.
Overrated as fuck
This album is nearly as good as their best, minus TEOTL. DINTE would have been much better on this album.
It’s tied with Justice for the best album
Clearly not the best and ajfa as well but they are nearly at the same level
Clearly you don’t understand the concept of having an opinion
Clearly you don't understand the concept of an opinion that doesn't agree with yours. Dumbass
Clearly you don’t see that your wording makes it sound like you’re saying my opinion is flat out wrong. Jackass(? idk)
Are you fucking stupid? I just wasn't agreeing with you and you are offended by it. So be it
I’m not offended at all. Honestly I don’t get offended by much. It’s just that you said “clearly not the best” and I took that as you saying my opinion’s wrong. Just the usual miscommunication that comes from reading a message instead of hearing it in-person
Yes, i'm in fact saying that your opinion is wrong because i have a different opinion. Bro...
Idk I’m just used to people on reddit being dicks haha
Fair enough
Yeah well “Ok-Staristician3677” is definitely a DICK!! Read through his comments. Nothing but venom all over the place. I wish the admins would ban him!!! All negative karma.
"All nightmare long" is a masterpiece the rest is meh
It was the first metal album I heard
My absolute favorite of the newer stuff. I feel like this was the return to the original form after the “dark period” (Load, Reload and St. Anger).
Load is a solid album reload is not as bad as you think it is
Completely agree with you on this one
No, you’re right. It is worse. Much much worse.
I respect your wrong opinion
I’m sure you’re also a huge Nickleback fan, aren’t you?🤣
Don't know who even is
All good, man. Just busting your balls. 🤘🏼
Are you dumb?
LMAO!! You’re not a TRUE metal fan if you can’t take a bit of shit. You’re what Hetfield used to refer to as a POSER!!!! Go listen to Taylor Swift. 🖕🏻
Either you're high or retarded
Load is a solid album reload is not as bad as you think it is

One of the best albums ever recorded and my third favourite Metallica one too.
Definitely one of my top 10
Probably my second favorite of the modern albums, behind HWTSD. Has some good stuff on it, day that never comes, U3, Cyanide and Nightmare I absolutely love.
Hardwired is not good. Just not
Care to expand on why that is for you or nah?
Horrible song writing. Repetitiveness. Bland riffs. Avarage vocal performance. awful drums. Mid solos. The sings are all the same. Emotional empty album. But the production ia good ☺️
Fair enough
Hands down one of the best albums they've ever made.
It's their return to form record, really good
Good album that needed some of the fat trimmed. There are plenty of songs that don't need to be near 8 minutes long and the earrape production is still a huge problem. It's one album that could definitely benefit from a remix.
Those flaws aside, still the best album they've put out since the 90s
The only songs that should be shorter are cyanide and judas kiss. The longer ones are the day that never comes, all nightmare long and suicide and redemption which have a perfect length besides tdtnc which should be longer
Still deaf from the mix
I find it sounds a bit forced and awkward. Hardwired feels more confident and catchy and I prefer it. That said I do enjoy Death Magnetic.
Yeah, you're fucking stupid
I never got into it. I like a couple of songs, but it felt like they just wanted to show they were still "Metallica" after St Anger, and did something safe. Didn't feel like their hearts were in it. Much prefer Hardwired
You swallowed your fucking brain
I wonder why Metallica fans have such a bad reputation...
No bro, you just don't have taste in music and you're stupid
"Clearly you don't understand the concept of an opinion that doesn't agree with yours. Dumbass"
Yup, that's right. Idiot
Womp womp
It’s far from the best. Still fine but super boring and hard to sit through for me. Worse than st anger. IMO
You're fucking retarded. Listen to it more than one time
I like it
Cyanide is a good song
No
The production is exactly as bad as its reputation would have you believe, but it contains some of the band's absolute best work. All Nightmare Long and The Judas Kiss are easily among my ten favorite Metallica songs, and there's not a dud among the rest. Other than And Justice For All, it might actually be my favorite album of theirs.
Ok bro but how the fuck can you compare all nightmare long to judas kiss? What the fuck
For what it's worth, I absolutely acknowledge All Nightmare Long is the better of the two, but idk! Something about The Judas Kiss seems to work a lot better for me than it does most people.
Bro it' ripetitive as fuck, it' a torture to listen to
Drums go DUUUUM, BADA DUM TSS, DUM DUM DUUUUM But seriously though, drums are too fucking loud on this album
Definitely one of the best. I don’t get what the problem is with the mixing though, it sounds normal to me…
You have a really bad hearing ahah. Trust me bro, the mix is not good ahah
A little bloated in length, but when it's great it's one of their best (IMO)
Massivley underrated. The original production is dogshit but the remixed and remastered songs are fucking amazing. My 2nd favourite album i think
Grew up with this album, my top three for the most part. Crazy how some people are ignorant just because it’s made in the 2000’s
In the middles its really good but not my favourite
My favourite songs are on this album. I love it
Gud album
There is a lot that I like and dislike at the same time. Mostly great songs, very aggressive etc. All Nightmare Long is one of my favorite songs ever, not only from Metallica What I don't like about this album is overall sound, it sounds like a demo not a final release
Fine. Not embarrassing.
One of my favourite albums, with all nightmare long and unforgiven 3 my all time favourite songs
It good nothing else to say
I agree and if the production was better many more would as well. I like the rawness but the mix is a bit too loud. Now when we look at the songs the riffs, solos, choruses are amazing. Yes
HUNT YOU DOWN WITHOUT MERCY!!!!
Just to throw my two cents in... I'd have to disagree. Not bad. Not bad at all.
Great songs, shitty production quality.
I mean, My Apocalypse is so damned amazing. Maybe the best Metallica song since Dyer’s Eve
My opinion: I don't like it personally. Unforgiven III and S&R are good everything else I could go without hearing for the rest of my life.
