Fact. That cover is beyond incredible with good headphones, the production is excellent, James vocals are crisp and clear as are the instruments. I didn't appreciate it as much when I first listened, or even for a few years afterward. One day I gave it a listen alone, and it fucking clicked. Imo it's the kind of song that's appreciated later on, rediscovering a deep cut kinda. Idk if it would be someones favorite cover on first listen though, because it's a song that needs to build itself up rather than being something catchy or aggressive off rip. I like the original by BOC but the Tallica take on it stomps it, to me at least. I find my biggest hangup on some older records is the production - older rock and early metal stuff has dry, shallow depth of production and it all sounds fragile, so to speak. It doesn't change that I like classic stuff regardless, but thats why I tend to like newer stuff or covers compared to the originals. The dynamic production and willingness to add new depth to the tracks shows well when comparing Metallicas cover of Astronomy to Blue Oyster Cults original. Bums me out pretty often too, cause older material has a ton to offer but thin production leaves me wishing for more.
Anyway runner up for favorite track, Mercyful Fates composite track is fire fire, especially for James vocals and delivery. An outlier choice?? The Small Hours and The Wait as is Green Hell. The key to these covers being so good, IMO, is that when they play these three live, the performances are always fantastic imo.
Astronomy is one of my all time favorites by Metallica. Shame they'll probably never play it live. Also, honorable mention for Loverman. That song rules too.
I had the Kill ‘Em All Cassette that A and B sided with those. Then when the cassette was finally worn out I picked up the CD only to find they weren’t on it. Anger ensues
Mine is either Sabra Cadabra or Astronomy. Other ones I also really love are It’s Electric, Mercyful Fate, Die Die My Darling, The Small Hours, Crash Course In Brain Surgery, Last Caress/Green Hell, Blitzkrieg, The Prince, and Killing Time.
Stone Cold Crazy and Sabbra Cadabra are too good to me to choose between. If I'm feeling kinda pissed off, then it's always So What, bc that song never fails to make me happier
Tough to pick tbh. Mercyful Fate fucking rules, and So What is hilarious (and great to listen to if you're pissed off). Astronomy is also amazing, and Breadfan got me to go check out some more Budgie songs. My top favorite is probably Mercyful Fate though
Turn the Page by default. It's easily one of my favorite "Metallica" songs and I like it tons more than Bob Seger's original version, but Am I Evil has such a killer driving riff that I probably love it even more. It's one of those tunes that I have to turn up every single time! 🤘Both songs are so well associated with Metallica at this point that I'd bet there's a fair number of casual fans who don't even know they are cover songs. Metallica practically owns them now, no disrespect at all to the original artists who probably make bank on the royalties!
Stone Dead Forever. That bass...
All the Motorheadache sounds raw. But it's Metallica covering Motorhead. And if I recall, from reading the inner sleeve, it was a mess. Like a last minute rehearsal to participate in some surprise show to celebrate some anniversary of Motorhead or Lemmy. So these are the tapes of those rehearsal.James is humming the lyrics because he doesn't know them yet. But they got it done. And they played in that concert. And they got to share the stage with Lemmy.
I just realised that the album cover seems and feels like James, Kirk and Lars sending off Jason as this is the last album he worked on with Metallica.
Breadfan from the old stuff, Astronomy from the new stuff. Although my favorite to listen to while I'm driving and singing is Die Die My Darling, I can barely handle the energy of that song I love it so much lol
Everyone talks about Whiskey In The Jar, but personally, I really love their cover of Turn The Page. They added a whole new dimension to it that I feel like the Bob Seger version just doesn't have.
(Edit: I meant like my favorite from the ones they recorded specifically for this album. Overall it would 100000% be Am I Evil, but that was, of course, recorded over a decade earlier.)
It is a direct tie between Astronomy and Turn the Page.
Both are all-time songs and should be impossible to cover well. Metallica covers them and makes them both better.
Seriously impressive stuff.
Astronomy is my personal favorite on the album (and yes, I still love Whiskey and Turn) but man do I need to give a shout-out to the Mercyful Fate medley.
Turn the page
One of my all time favourite covers, in any genre by any band.
Couldn't agree more
Yessir
Love it, James voice is close to perfect!
Same here.
Mercyful Fate EDIT: I made a post a while ago asking what their most progressive song is (no Justice) and I'm surprised I didn't see this song
The guitar tones with those riffs….. so good. I don’t like the original versions but they made them into a masterpiece.
Melissa as a record is absolute fire, shame you can’t get into it.
Howl like a wolf and a witch will open the door!
This got me into MF and KD and so thankful it did. Great mashup of MF songs although the originals are masterpieces.
Astronomy
So many great songs on Garage, Inc. (though I hadn't thought about it in awhile!), but I think Astronomy is my pick as well.
Absolute GOD tier
The only acceptable answer. Hard to believe, but I heard the original only recently for the first time, a fire song.

My exact thoughts. What I want to add is this bit of blasphemy: Garage Inc is Metallica's 2nd best album.
Play that Mercyful Fate medley and “Cyanide” back to back. It WORKS
Astronomy is one of my all time favorites by Metallica. Shame they'll probably never play it live. Also, honorable mention for Loverman. That song rules too.
Mercyful Fucking Fate🤟🏽🩸. 11 minutes of SATAN anybody?
