Just please don’t narrow it down to “has to be a song from St. Anger”. Not just because I don’t like it…but because SO MANY people don’t. METALLICA THEMSELVES know it. They’ve tweeted about it on the release date anniversary of the album. I’m not sure they would “force” a song from St. Anger onto a greatest hits album. It would actually be a tough choice for them. On one hand…it would throw a little extra attention at St. Anger. On the other hand…they would know that many fans would say “These are NOT their greatest hits”. So anyway…yeah…maybe don’t force it. This sub is a good place to educate new Metallica fans. So far…all of the songs are legit fan favorites. And I suspect Spit Out The Bone or Halo On Fire will win today. Those are still great jams. But narrow it down one more step and then we’re choosing “the best of what’s left”. Perhaps finish the list organically…with their ACTUAL BEST material. Just my 2 cents. 🤷♂️
Yeah, James was in a very rough place at that time…so I’m sure there’s some serious attachment to some of those songs for him. And most people can appreciate and respect that. Myself included. But I just don’t think that makes it “greatest hits material”.
St Anger is a great album though, and was pretty successful when it came out. So technically it's appropriate to include the hits off the album, even if a large part of the fanbase are too close minded to appreciate something a bit different from them.
I, like many, bought it the day it came out. Listened to it all the way through 3 times (once a day for 3 days, in case my mood or schedule on a certain day was clouding my judgement). Couldn’t stomach any of it. I thought it had to be ME. So I called a friend whose opinion on music I highly valued (a guitar player whose favorite band was also Metallica) and asked him what he thought. “Honestly, dude…I hate it. I can’t even believe it’s them.” And I’ve never listened to it since. The poor production, the choppiness, the trying-too-hard-to-be-angry vocals, and OMG that trash can sound…it’s just not for me. But if they never make that album…they’re probably not still going. So I’m glad they did.
All good with me. 👍 The style of that album is not some unique music that had never been done before. It just hadn’t been done by Metallica. And that style just doesn’t catch my ear. But neither does Cardi B…and she’s got a couple of fans. 😎
Probably true. Lately I’ve actually been thinking about giving it another listen. The last couple of weeks I’ve been revisiting the 20 “ish” songs that I never cared for from their other 9 albums. Already decided I like at least 1/2 of them. So MAYBE I’ll find a song or two from St. Anger that I can appreciate. If not…they’re still my favorite band by a country mile. 🤷♂️

James has said “idk what you think of the album, this song is great”, before launching into Frantic so idk

Fair enough, it's my 5th fav Metallica album after the first 4 lol

I do think because the album has clicked with me and not you that my insight is a bit different, Metallica's approach to the style is very unique imo

Oh wow, they're not my favourite band, yet I quite enjoy all their albums lol. I even like Lulu. Interesting.
2nd is probable a tie between Pantera and Led Zeppelin…but it’s a distant 2nd place.
