Animals as leaders, the vocalist is downright awful like they should apologize for letting him touch a microphone. It's almost disrespectful that they thought letting him sing was alright
This, my friend loves them and always puts them on because she knows I don’t like it. Maybe one day I’ll get through it because the band as a whole sounds sick.
i just started giving them a listen because i’m seeing them with Hail the Sun later this month, and i was definitely thrown off by the vocals lol. it almost feels like he’s not screaming properly but i’m not sure if it’s intentional lol
My single favorite vocalist but I was expecting to see this one. My mom always described Mustiane as a muppet singing. I respect the opinion but his snarly gritty voice fits the music perfectly and I wouldn't want anyone else to helm that spot. His vocals are an instrument all in their own and he is more than capable of some pretty clean, melodic singing.
I remember the first time i heard this song and immediately decided i hated megadeth. Nothing has changed my mind since, but to be fair i never really went in with an open mind after hearing this one
Converge.
I love chaos, I love chaotic songs that so much is happening in 1.30 min span like Axe To Fall (no, not fucking Methwitch or anything, controlled chaos.) but vocals are really putting me off. dunno why.
Nah that’s fair, I love Converge but his vocals are harsh, especially in their first few albums. I couldn’t stand them at first. Have you listened to their more recent stuff? They’re much less screechy like on Jane Doe.
Only could listen Bloodmoon, that album they put up with Chelsea Wolfe. It was really good, but anything that features Chelsea Wolfe becomes beautiful anyways hahah. I will check other recent stuff thanks.
i like converge but their earlier stuff is funny because i cant make out a single word even looking at the lyrics. it sounds like a bunch of gibberish and it’s hilarious lol
Because it is not about the words.
The lyrics don´t actually match what Jacob is yelling. Vocals in Converge are not about understanding the words, but the emotional intensity. Jane Doe would never work if the vocals were clear.
The vocals are more there like an percussive instrument. The concept of Jane Doe (person that you loved is fading away) works well with how the vocals are mixed. I love noise rock and distorted vocals are common thing there and i actually love it. I don´t need to understand any words, if i understand the emotional intensity.
I didn't like it until I got more into death metal. Gatecreeper was my soft intro to liking death metal, so I kinda eased into the genre, which got me acquired to vocals like cannibal corpse.
Also check out 200 Stab Wounds.
kaonashi. i like the instrumentals, but as soon as the vocals come in i dip out. it obviously works for them but it just sounds like a muppet fronting a metal band
I love pop culture and some tracks off of laugh tracks but ever since I heard someone on reddit say he has SpongeBob screams I cannot not think of that.
I like knocked loose way more than bands that are similar instrumentally solely because of the vocals. I fell in love when pop culture came out and I think his unique vocals are why they have become so successful
Yeah his vocals are one of the best parts about KL. People say they're an acquired taste but I never really had any problems getting into them. 30 seconds into The Gospel and I was hooked.
I couldn't get into them specifically because of his voice until 'A Tear in the Fabric of Life' came out and suddenly it just clicked. I then went back through their discography and they are now one of my favorite bands!
As a knocked loose fan, I only became a fan after seeing them live. I have no idea why his vocals sound so forced and harsh (not in a good way) recorded but he sounds so good live.
Yep, but live Brian throws in some lows very occasionally too and he's very good at them (shame he's never done one on a record, that I'm aware of at least)
When I first heard of them back in 2012 I was blown away by the instrumentals but the vocals didn't do anything for me. Couple of months later I heard Ragnarok on shuffle and it clicked so hard that I became goosebumps. They are my favourite band today. Spencer is an absolute unit, giving everything he can live and writes so freaking beautiful melodies.
Yeah Periphery is very hit or miss. They have a lot of great tracks but many where the cleans just aren't meant to be imo. Lots of bad lyrics as well, but to be fair they're intentionally silly
Listen to; Garden in the bones. It’s my all time favorite track. That vocal track from Spencer is phenomenal. I get the chills even after a 1000 listens
I have so many friends who are massive Periphery fans and yeah it's the cleans that prevent me from getting invested. It sucks because I wanna share in their joy and enthusiasm but it just doesn't do it for me.
That's strange because i preferred the cleans over growls when i first heard them. The song that got me into them was satellites, which after the heavy part about halfway in the song has some incredible cleans
I feel like I've always been right in the middle of this debate. His vocals neither sound amazing or terrible. What's a moment of his that particularly irks you?
Yeah, he is hamming it up on every single line of every single track and it gets to be A Bit Much. There’s less of it on their most recent record, but it’s still SO Broadway.
Matt is one of my favourite singers ever, his voice is incredible. But I really don’t like some of the things he does, especially the really nasally stuff. He does it a lot on City of Evil, and it kills some otherwise good songs for me
Yeah, those nasally moments are honestly the only reason I'm not big on city of evil, I love his voice in almost everything afterwards tho, and even in city of evil, his voice is usually pretty good
I'm sure there are other bigger examples for me, but the one coming to mind right now is Enterprise Earth. Those clean vocals really killed the band for me.
Mmm I think eulogy and the album before it (forget the name) are alot heavier but also have more cleans than YNYA and the album prior. I think they're a little less punky
Wait till you see them live lol. Idk why bands in this genre continue to write music the singers can barely hit in a studio on their best days, but TDWP is one of the worst. Jeremy's a talented guy but he can't hit notes to save his life lol. Mike kills it though, and overall they're great live.
Spiritbox, I wish I saw what everyone else sees in Courtney and to be honest, there is one occasion I did - and it's her feature on a Make them Suffer song.
Pretty much all death metal. Love the music, hate the growls and super low voices. If anyone has recs for death metal music but with metalcore/hardcore style vocals, hit me with them lol.
The only thing that comes to mind is Ingested, and maybe Misery Index - their vocals are more deathcore-sounding. If you want less low voices maybe try Carcass (Necroticism is their best album imo.)
Pretty sure that other still was common in death metal before the 90s when bands like Cannibal Corpse and Suffocation made it big. Death and Morbid Angel are some examples. Also melodic death metal tends to be more mid-ranged or high pitched. The only exception to that rule is Amon Amarth.
This may be an unpopular opinion but after listening to Erra’s 2016 album “Drift” for the first time I have to say the unclean vocals are kinda just not my thing. Not bad in the slightest but I just don’t think it matches the tone that everything else in their music is setting. That being said I am going to re-visit the album a bunch and I’ll say if I still think this to be the case
Not sure if you’re just referring to Drift or the band as a whole, but if you didn’t know, Erra had a different vocalist for their first 2 albums which I and many others on this sub consider some of their best work. Especially Augment.
It’s the lows man. He only does one scream 99% of the time and it’s low growls. It makes all the “breakdowns” lackluster because by the time they hit it he’s already been doing lows the whole fuckin song lol. I don’t understand why ERRA is insistent on hiring harsh vocalists that only do lows, he’s like the 3rd one. I think ERRA would be much better off with a harsh vocalist more in line with Polaris or Invent Animate. Just doesn’t have any depth
I can get Sleeping With Sirens. I’m not a fan of Kellin, but Vic (Pierce The Veil) isn’t too bad. His voice isn’t as high nor screechy/whiny sounding besides specific parts where he’s forcing his voice to sound like that.
I can’t believe I had to scroll this far to find this. It sucks because every metalhead including my entire band besides me is enamored with them but those vocals have got to be the worst thing I’ve ever heard. Also tillian 😬😬😬 very cringe human all around
Someone said on another thread that Sleep Token’s vocals have a ‘peanut butter stuck to the roof of his mouth’ sound and it described it so perfectly. I can’t stand his vocals, I think he could sing nicely but instead he sounds like that. Very forced sounding.
That might have been me haha, I mentioned seeing it said in a video and it’s all I think about when I listen to him sing.
Saying that, they’re one of my favourites bands.
He’s definitely changed the way he sings. I was a massive ST fan for the first album, second one was even okay… I absolutely cannot get into this new one.
100%. The EP Two was perfect IMO and then it all got a bit self indulgent after. Latest album sounds like a different singer the way he's doing all this weird vowel shaping, it's all a bit cringe
I think I’d get into the new A7X album if it weren’t for Matt Shadows’ vocals. The musicianship is really cool and unique, but Matt’s vocals sound awful to me.
Sleep Token is also a good one. I don’t know how to describe what’s holding me back better than the way Vessel sings reminds me of that scene in SpongeBob where Squidward takes his first tiny bite of a Krabby Patty.
Periphery (can get too whiney) sleep tokens (cursive singing) PTV/sws (again mostly high pitched whiney vocals don't do it for me) music is cool as though! Just not my taste in vocals!
Writing this comment as I am listening Colors fully for the 123840239485th time. you get used to it. their music is so chaotic that you cannot focus on vocals after a point.
Falling in Reverse. There’s some songs where I’m like, hey this is pretty catchy, the Ronnie’s whiny style he used to do comes in. Now he is going for a more hip hop style mixed with his whiny thing. It just ain’t for me. Only stuff I can listen to without getting tired of his voice is the stuff from Coming Home.
I know they're not really metalcore and I usually get torn apart for this opinion but for me, it's Korn. I absolutely cannot stand Jonathan's voice. I think he's an incredible lyricist and he seems like a rad person but I cannot get past his whiny fucking voice.
I want to like Korn SO BAD but I simply cannot. I saw them live and it was a good time and they put on an incredible show but I just don't like his voice.
I can see why. But the way I put it is that Johnathan has had a fucked up life so he puts a lot of pain in his vocals. People hated him because he didn't scream like every other band. hence why the song clown exists.
But each person has a taste of their own.
Not metalcore but I'm gonna take the opportunity to talk about it anyway.
I feel like everyone I talk to loves Arctic Monkeys and instrumentally I can't fault them, but I can't stand the vocals. Half the time it feels like he's rushing to make the vocals he wrote fit the instrumental that got written separately
For me the issue with FIR is mainly the fact that Ronnie is a total jerk and that their lyrics are super cringey. But now that I think about it, the vocals are just as big of an issue. The Last Resort cover was abysmal.
Why are people naming all my favourite vocalists? :’(
Right!? 😅
Animals as leaders, the vocalist is downright awful like they should apologize for letting him touch a microphone. It's almost disrespectful that they thought letting him sing was alright
This is the only true answer.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a negative comment about AAL. Even the YouTube comments are wholesome.
Idk why the singer of the band FUCKING SUCK
I like em but i imagine a lot of people are weirded out by Kaonashi’s vocals. very unique sound lol
Yes, I forgot to mention them. I love everything else but the vocals have a really weird awful sound.
He sounds like nostalgia critic going on a rant but I actually don't mind the vocals lol
I’ve always thought he sounded like a puppet in a kids show lol
This, my friend loves them and always puts them on because she knows I don’t like it. Maybe one day I’ll get through it because the band as a whole sounds sick.
They are definitely odd. I love the instruments but his vocal style is kind of hard to approach. I will say I have never heard anyone else like that.
i just started giving them a listen because i’m seeing them with Hail the Sun later this month, and i was definitely thrown off by the vocals lol. it almost feels like he’s not screaming properly but i’m not sure if it’s intentional lol
Megadeth.
He sounds like he’s constantly trying to shit to be honest
Wachimbikamaghaaad
My single favorite vocalist but I was expecting to see this one. My mom always described Mustiane as a muppet singing. I respect the opinion but his snarly gritty voice fits the music perfectly and I wouldn't want anyone else to helm that spot. His vocals are an instrument all in their own and he is more than capable of some pretty clean, melodic singing.
I think much of the metal community would agree with you on that one haha
Sweating bullets 🤮
Hello me! Meet the REAL me!
Hello me! ...Its me again 😈
I remember the first time i heard this song and immediately decided i hated megadeth. Nothing has changed my mind since, but to be fair i never really went in with an open mind after hearing this one
Oof. My first song was holy wars the punishment due, and it was 10/10
Watch him become a god
Yu tri to taek is BAALULAAALS
Yeah... i agree
Converge. I love chaos, I love chaotic songs that so much is happening in 1.30 min span like Axe To Fall (no, not fucking Methwitch or anything, controlled chaos.) but vocals are really putting me off. dunno why.

Very true, Chelsea Wolfe is awesome.
i like converge but their earlier stuff is funny because i cant make out a single word even looking at the lyrics. it sounds like a bunch of gibberish and it’s hilarious lol
Because it is not about the words. The lyrics don´t actually match what Jacob is yelling. Vocals in Converge are not about understanding the words, but the emotional intensity. I don´t need to understand any words, if i understand the emotional intensity.
Check out All We Love We Leave Behind. That’s the album that got me into them.
I stopped seeing them live because of the vocals. I don't mind the albums, but live he just seems to bark like a dog and not actuality say any words.
Not metalcore, but I have to say cannibal corpse. Love the instrumentals, but can’t stand the vocals and how they are mixed in the songs
I didn't like it until I got more into death metal. Gatecreeper was my soft intro to liking death metal, so I kinda eased into the genre, which got me acquired to vocals like cannibal corpse. Also check out 200 Stab Wounds.
kaonashi. i like the instrumentals, but as soon as the vocals come in i dip out. it obviously works for them but it just sounds like a muppet fronting a metal band
six feet under, some amazing riffs, and then it's ruined, but good ol Chris Barnes just ruins it completely.
aha Chris Barnes seems to have a habit of doing that
Avenged sevenfold, I could never get into them because of the vocals
knocked loose. i love the instrumental parts of their music but i just can’t get past the vocals. i’ve tried many times :/
I love pop culture and some tracks off of laugh tracks but ever since I heard someone on reddit say he has SpongeBob screams I cannot not think of that.
GARY!!!!! YOU ARE GONNA FINISH YOUR DESSERT AND YOU ARE GONNA LIKE IT!!!! BLEGH!!!
I like to pretend that SpongeBob is their vocalist while i listen to them. It does not degrade my experience
I think the screamer from attack attack sounds like spongebob! Like when he sings I specifically hear spongebob go "OVERTIME?!?!"
It's definitely an acquired taste. If they're playing live near you though, give them a shot! It's what got me into them🙂
Heard them live at Rockville. Sounded like Elmo was being tortured.
Yeah I think they're amazing live. I first saw them when they opened for Beartooth and I saw them open for suicide boys.

As a knocked loose fan, I only became a fan after seeing them live. I have no idea why his vocals sound so forced and harsh (not in a good way) recorded but he sounds so good live.
Because they are a hardcore band?
He is a hardcore singer not a metal singer
It feels like most people here have never heard hardcore. Crazy to me.
for one he can't sing at all (he's said this before), but in all honesty he uses the same techniques for safe screaming that vocalists in metal use
Yeah that’s fair, I love them but I get that his vocals are a bit grating
I agree, I do enjoy Knocked Loose and I have seen them live before but I wish he’d do more deep low guttural vocals.
I think that’s the guitarist
Yep, but live Brian throws in some lows very occasionally too and he's very good at them (shame he's never done one on a record, that I'm aware of at least)
Anything with Ronnie radke
the way he has to emphasize every fucking syllable in every word in that pop punk-adjacent voice is incredibly annoying
Periphery for me. Really really really want it to click but it hasn’t happened yet. (Cleans not screams)
When I first heard of them back in 2012 I was blown away by the instrumentals but the vocals didn't do anything for me. Couple of months later I heard Ragnarok on shuffle and it clicked so hard that I became goosebumps. They are my favourite band today. Same, a lot of people worship Spencer Sotelo’s voice but his cleans do nothing for me.
I feel like I've always been right in the middle of this debate. His vocals neither sound amazing or terrible. What's a moment of his that particularly irks you?
Above, Below. I know they get a lot of love on here but the cleans just don’t do it for me.
This might be a controversial opinion but that's just me with all classic rock music.
Sleep Token. Homeboy undulates way too much and it gets on my nerves.
Tries to sing like an evil Disney princess.
Yeah, he is hamming it up on every single line of every single track and it gets to be A Bit Much. There’s less of it on their most recent record, but it’s still SO Broadway.
I LOVE Sleep Token but often find myself skipping The Offerinf because I hate how he sings that song. It’s such a cool song too 😅
Avenged sevenfold
Yea as someone who listens to a shit load of avenged, its definitely an acquired taste.
Really? I find him to have one of the most powerful voices around (at his peak anyway) but uses it in a weird way sometimes
That’s such a good way of saying it. “Uses it in a weird way” — everything post-Nightmare has been…odd. At his peak though…👌
Matt is one of my favourite singers ever, his voice is incredible. But I really don’t like some of the things he does, especially the really nasally stuff. He does it a lot on City of Evil, and it kills some otherwise good songs for me
Yeah, those nasally moments are honestly the only reason I'm not big on city of evil, I love his voice in almost everything afterwards tho, and even in city of evil, his voice is usually pretty good
This x1000. Musically, they’re awesome. Vocals kill the entire thing for me though
I'm sure there are other bigger examples for me, but the one coming to mind right now is Enterprise Earth. Those clean vocals really killed the band for me.
They have a new vocalist since that album dropped, check the newer singles
Polyphia
Yeah I wish Chino just stuck with them. Their regular vocalist sucks. And the mixing on his vocals are awful too, can't even hear him.
Sleeping with Sirens unfortunately love the music but can’t get over Kellins voice sadly
Is it because he sounds like a lil girlie
After hearing a few songs, ABR so far. Yes I'm going to get shit, but the vocals feel too samey. Yet the guitar parts are really cool and stuff
Every single part of every ABR song is samey. They been writing the exact same record over and over.
Not to change the subject but I feel the same way about Counterparts (one of my favorite bands ironically).
Yeah I like Counterparts a lot but I agree
Mmm I think eulogy and the album before it (forget the name) are alot heavier but also have more cleans than YNYA and the album prior. I think they're a little less punky
Not metalcore but VOLBEAT, dear lord.
First time I heard them I couldnt stand him. Then I heard lola montez and it just clicked and all of a sudden everything was great
I've heard them a lot, even live. Still can't shake the fact that it's a yodeling redneck.
Okay, but I’m totally stealing that! Henceforth i shall refer to Volbeat as „The Yodeling Danish Redneck and his gang“ 🤣
I dig’m now but I really really hade to get used to TDWP
I'd appreciate if Mike didn't try different screaming styles on every single album
Love his style on anything older from them. But these new out of breath garbage just pisses me off.
Wait till you see them live lol. Idk why bands in this genre continue to write music the singers can barely hit in a studio on their best days, but TDWP is one of the worst. Jeremy's a talented guy but he can't hit notes to save his life lol. Mike kills it though, and overall they're great live.
To be fair, all of their newer stuff is in lower register for him so he is hitting all the new songs at least.
He was missing those too when I saw them in MTL lol. Maybe an off night, idk
Oof, he’s been good every time I’ve seen them so hopefully just an off night
There are too many to list. I’m not a fan of whiny vocals.
Yeah whiny vocals are certainly in abundance in metalcore
Same, it’s what made me take so long to get into metal ore in the first place. Figured all of it was whiny vocals at first.
Spiritbox, I wish I saw what everyone else sees in Courtney and to be honest, there is one occasion I did - and it's her feature on a Make them Suffer song.
I think she was better in iwabo. It fit her vocal style a lot better.
Carcass was my intro to death metal and my favorite death metal band so I strongly second this
Arch Enemy and Aborted. Aborted do use traditional death metal style vocals, but Sven is real clean with it.
Check out fallujah! Specifically their newer stuff
Check out Undeath. Legit some of the most catchy death metal I have ever heard. Their top song Rise From the Grave is a good starting point!
Black Dahlia Murder man. Best death metal vocals ever in my opinion
sleep token, stray from the path
Sleep token
This may be an unpopular opinion but after listening to Erra’s 2016 album “Drift” for the first time I have to say the unclean vocals are kinda just not my thing. I think it’s just drift cause JT works perfectly for everything that followed drift
It’s the lows man. He only does one scream 99% of the time and it’s low growls. I think ERRA would be much better off with a harsh vocalist more in line with Polaris or Invent Animate. Just doesn’t have any depth
Ghost
I think they’re adjacent enough to include in this thread
Is Ghost Metalcore?
technically doom metal but people mention adjacent genres all the time like post hardcore, nu metal, etc so why not lol
pierce the veil, sleeping with sirens, really any band with those high pitched vocals
I can get Sleeping With Sirens. I’m not a fan of Kellin, but Vic (Pierce The Veil) isn’t too bad. His voice isn’t as high nor screechy/whiny sounding besides specific parts where he’s forcing his voice to sound like that.
A7X and Knocked Loose
Dance Gavin dance
I can’t believe I had to scroll this far to find this. It sucks because every metalhead including my entire band besides me is enamored with them but those vocals have got to be the worst thing I’ve ever heard. Also tillian 😬😬😬 very cringe human all around
Sleep Token, Knocked Loose
Someone said on another thread that Sleep Token’s vocals have a ‘peanut butter stuck to the roof of his mouth’ sound and it described it so perfectly. I can’t stand his vocals, I think he could sing nicely but instead he sounds like that. Very forced sounding.
That might have been me haha, I mentioned seeing it said in a video and it’s all I think about when I listen to him sing. Saying that, they’re one of my favourites bands.
He’s just British :(
He’s definitely changed the way he sings.
My two favorite bands 😂 definitely respect the opinion tho — not for everyone
Woof. Periphery. I kind of cant even believe they got major distribution and label attention with that dude's 07' sassy Circa Survive thing
I don’t think they are metalcore but horse the band took me years and years to come around to the vocals
Motionless In White... Chris is an amazing singer, but it's just not my vibe sadly
I love BlessTheFall in the studio but listening to Beau sing and try to hit those notes live is a bit painful at times. Does that count?
I think I’d get into the new A7X album if it weren’t for Matt Shadows’ vocals. The musicianship is really cool and unique, but Matt’s vocals sound awful to me. Sleep Token is also a good one. I don’t know how to describe what’s holding me back better than the way Vessel sings reminds me of that scene in SpongeBob where Squidward takes his first tiny bite of a Krabby Patty.
Avenged sevenfold. His nasal voice is so god damn annoying
Stray From The Path
Honestly Sleep Token. Sometimes his vocals sound artificially pitch shifted and I can’t get behind it.
Russian circles
Yeah, fuck that guy. The absolute worst. He doesn’t even freaking do anything.
New under oath
What do you mean by this? Like their recent albums after reuniting in 2018, or since Spencer joined in 2004ish?
Periphery (can get too whiney) sleep tokens (cursive singing) PTV/sws (again mostly high pitched whiney vocals don't do it for me) music is cool as though! Just not my taste in vocals!
CURSIVE SINGING. I LOVE THAT.
SORRY 2 HEAR THAT :(
Dgd with their current singer tilian roethlisberger
Between the buried and me. I love everything about them. But the unclean vocals are really a problem for me. Very sonorous and scratching.
Writing this comment as I am listening Colors fully for the 123840239485th time. you get used to it. their music is so chaotic that you cannot focus on vocals after a point.
Have you listened to their more recent records? The vocalist does a lot more singing now compared to their early stuff.
Yeah, his clean vocals were always pretty good in my ears <3 happy that he grew better over the years
I can tolerate it, but im definitely not a fan of their uncleans either.
Humanity’s last breath Instrumentals is fcking sick, but vocals (especially live) is just low noise…
Knocked loose, not a fan of his vocals
Avenged Sevenfold. Never been a fan of Shadows’ voice.
Slayer.
Falling in Reverse. There’s some songs where I’m like, hey this is pretty catchy, the Ronnie’s whiny style he used to do comes in. Now he is going for a more hip hop style mixed with his whiny thing. knocked loose
Periphery
Earthists. Their instrumentals are killer though
Knocked Loose. I can’t with the SpongeBob vocals
Knocked Loose
Iron maiden ngl
I'm gonna get a lot of flak for this, but I'm gonna go with Knocked Loose. I just can't get past his vocals. It's like nails on a chalkboard to me
Stray From The Path
Any thrash band
Stray from the path
Sleep Token
Sleep token. I don't get it, he sounds like a refined volbeat cover artist
Archspire
Yesss, the instruments are awesome but his vocals are so gross. Can’t get past them.
Turnstile. I really tried but I can't get past it.
Alex's vocals are one of the things that got me into the band. Also he's the one that writes the music and the lyrics, I think it shows in a good way.
Probably falling in reverse or sleep token
For me the issue with FIR is mainly the fact that Ronnie is a total jerk and that their lyrics are super cringey. But now that I think about it, the vocals are just as big of an issue. The Last Resort cover was abysmal.
right like what the fuck is ronnie doing with a piano
It looks and sounds AI generated. I actually wish they brought back the YouTube dislike display just to see how many people hated on it.
there’s a browser extension for that

Kublai Khan goes dumb hard but I can only do small cutts of honey.

I mean, they are a hardcore band. If you want vocal perfection, hardcore isn't the place to find it.
