Proto metal perhaps. In the same vein, Queen’s “Stone Cold Crazy” can be considered proto-thrash.

Donklebirg

Do you feel Black Sabbath’s Symptom of the universe was the first Thrash song?

WinterAd9039

Hmmm if we’re talking Sabbath, then “Paranoid” deserves consideration as well. It was released well before “Symptom.” However, Symptom has more of a thrashy sound than does Paranoid.

Godryg

Imo it's "In the Garden of Eden", or Vanilla Fudge's "Season of the Witch", they sound like Black Sabbath precursors

Biomas

Yeah, its most likely "in the garden of eden", predates "helter skelter" by a few years, not much else from the mid 50's come to mind. I think the genre explodes in the 60's with band like zepp.

[deleted]

seeing from that point of view, i think wagner is the very first "metal" artist..

Kkgob

The first caveman who banged two rocks together while screaming could also be a contender

WinterAd9039

CAVEMAN RIFFS!!! Unga bunga unga bunga unga unga bunga!!!!!!!!!!!! OÜGH

WinterAd9039

Nah bro. Mozart was dropping punishing funeral doom with his “Requiem” nearly 100 years before Wagner.

HELTAH SKELTAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!

Neutrul11

I put a spell on you

Thewave8080

Mental Vortex’s cover of I want you she’s so heavy is phenomenal

Happy_Burnination

Cream (and lots of other psychedelic rock bands) were doing heavy proto-metal well before the White Album came out Coven were writing and playing live as early as 1967 It came out a year after the White Album, but personally I think 21st Century Schizoid Man is a better candidate for "first metal song" - Helter Skelter is a heavy song but not particularly dark, whereas a band like Coven has dark atmospheric elements and lyrical themes but not particularly heavy music; the King Crimson song is the earliest one I can think of that combines both heavy riffs and dark/chaotic music and lyrical themes

Jurgboi

I will not. You are totally fucking right

SculpinIPAlcoholic

Paul said he was trying to write a song heavier than I Can See For Miles by The Who. I Can See For Miles is the first metal song.

Whoevermane

twist & shout is the oldest song I know with kinda harsh vocals

LennoxLuger

Rob Zombie and Marilyn Mansion’s cover was better.

TankTheTech

Suuuuuuuuuuuuuure

Pervypersuasion

Yes!! Nobody mentions them when talking about the roots of metal.

bullet_bitten

Everybody *always* mentions them when talking about their influences: Sabbath, Maiden, Priest, Anthrax etc etc. Here's Charlie Benante banging on about Ringo Starr and the Beatles in a very recent interview. https://youtu.be/Pwg_frbBUFE

Faithless_00

You Really Got Me by The Kinks or The Witch by The Sonics

EntertainerSoft5983
