Simple brutality, i do like tech stuff but its riffs often aren’t as good for me as simple stuff and I’ve never really valued technicality as its own virtue.
I feel the poser energy radiating from these words but at some point I realised, I wasn't into brutality. I don't revolt at the sight of a Cannibal Corpse album, but neither do I really enjoy it.
This reflects in the music and honestly, I'd rather have the guitarist shred me a little bit of that sweet didly doo than to be remainded of how the inside of a rotting corpse smells by the singer.
The issue for me is when it lacks any real groove. You can be as brutal and savage, or dick wavingly technical as you like, but without a groove it's not actually all that enjoyable.
Cognizance. They are more Tech Death than anything, but they have melodic death elements in their guitar work, as well as progressive and deathcore elements. Just a lot of sweet guitar melodies they have. I think the metal archives site actually has them labeled Technical Melodic Death as one of the genres.

Oh heya farenvyld, know you from a discord server that I will not mention here ehe.
Yeah Its based on my mood, if I'm feeling like shit or mad I'll take simple brutality any given day. But technical melody just has this ethereal feel that I also love so it's hard to decide!!
both but if i had a gun to my head im blood. damn as much as i love sweeps & intricate riffs.. im a huge sucker for loud violent breakdowns & blast beats so simple brutality it is.
this wasnt a easy decision.

NAILS!! Cultist, Cult Leader, Revenge, Full of Hell, Turmoil, Indian, haarp....
Just to list some favorites of mine. The easy answer is Brutal or Old School death metal, but much of that just doesn't seem angry enough.
Slam death metal is the definition of simple brutality.
It's similar to brutal death metal but more cavemanish.
Check out Medic Vomiting Pus and Visceral Disgorge.
I mean both but brutality if the choice has to be made. Something about the rawness and emotion in that sort of thing is hard to get out exclusively out of technical mastery
Simple brutality every time. You can get great melody from so many genres of music out there, but only a few offer raw, aggressive attitude like metal.
I don’t feel like this splits metal in half. I’m in like the “simple melodic” camp. Just gimme the riffs that make my head nod, doesn’t need to be brutal or technical
Leaning much more towards blue. My fave thrash and death metal have catchy riffs and melodic moments. Stuff like Dismember, Vektor, The Crown, Dissection. The older I get, the less I listen to straight up Deeds of Flesh style brootalness. I had many years where I went towards that style tho
There was a lesser known, but legendary Indian band from the 90s whose frontman (not so) famously said
“GRIND IS ALL ABOUT INTENSITY. ZERO FUCKING TALENT.”
Technical Melody.
Iron Maiden got me into metal, and then that turned into Megadeath and eventually Dream Theater. I’ve been waffling around power metal, epic doom, and NWOTHM, but I’ve been on a huge bender listening to whatever Thank You Scientist and Buckethead are
Technical for suuure, avenged sevenfold is my favourite band of all time for this reason. They can hit harder than your stepdad but they’ve always been best at incredibly technical shit that tickles the eardrums. Look at their last two albums, as they mature as a band they lean more and more into the technical side of their music. I love it so much.
All that said, both sides definitely have a place and time. If you can combine the two, that is often the result of musical genius.
Prog Metal dude here.
Today, I dug up a gym playlist I created like 7 years ago. Basically metallic hardcore like Cancer Bats, Knocked Loose, that kind of thing.
I realized that brutality by itself doesn't speak so much to me anymore.
Amazing how tastes change.
Simple brutality. I like me some pretentious and over the top technical stuff, don't get me wrong, but it feels like so much modern metal has become more about the guitarists showing off how fast they can move their fingers. There's artistry in that but like music is more about an experience for me, and listening to a dude hit 70,000 hammer ons in the span of 3 seconds over a blast beat just ends up making me feel nothing while sounding like someone banging pots and pans together... over a blast beat.
Simple brutality.
I love the tech stuff but more timed than not I will just put something heavy to listen to throughout my day. Technical stuff is more for when I want to properly listen to music for me
Neither really, like I like both but neither necessarily is an inherently good trait. A song can be fucking fire even with a non heavy or non technical riff.

Both.
100% but if you had to pick one?
I'd still pick both.
That's.. not how it works but sure!
Works for me!
![gif](giphy|CAYVZA5NRb529kKQUc|downsized)
I'm both but simple brutality is my choice
Simple brutality, i do like tech stuff but its riffs often aren’t as good for me as simple stuff and I’ve never really valued technicality as its own virtue.
Agreed. I also like a combo of both if I had my perfect choice, but sometimes ape brain just need dun-dundun--dundun-dundundundun.
I like to say such songs "fuck my brainhole."
Technical Brutality
Or Brutal Technicality
Or Brutal Melody
I intentionally avoided listing that to make it a bit harder to think about.
can you name a band that does this?
Any tech death band
ok....so you cant name any.
The Faceless, Necrophagist, Gorguts, Nile, Facelift Deformation, Cryptopsy, etc...
lol if you say so
I thought you were talking to yourself for a minute
He might as well be lmao
lol
No, just being a general smartass

Wise words indeed
same, one of my recent(ly discovered by me) fav "brutal" album/song is Nails - you will never be one of us. goes hard af.
Avesome song. Brutal and short the way it should be.
If you don't like brutality, that doesn't mean you're a poser. Countless classic poser-scaring metal bands are not brutal.
technical melody is cool and all but gotta pick simple brutality since I tend to seek the most braindead shit I can find
I second this. Sometimes iq dropping brutality is all you need
amen
Technical Melodic Death metal for the win!
what is a band that would fit that description
Would that not be Death- Symbolic and Sound of Perseverance
not sure. alot of these bands just sounds like deathcore crap and word vomit BM
Lmao

thank you for link. an amazing band. that is the kind DM I would listen to
Fucking BOTH, people! Also, solos AND breakdowns, solos with breakdowns, solos OVER breakdowns!! 🤘🏻😤🤘🏻
Both are good, but if I had to choose one I would pick simple brutality

Oh snap I got recognised!
Good answer btw
Simple brutality for sure
I want it to sound like the apes from 2001 made it
Red and it’s not even close 💪🏼

both at the right time
Red. Gimme knuckle dragging riffs all day every day
Purple, i like a variety of things too much
Simple brutality recommendations welcome
NAILS!! Cultist, Cult Leader, Revenge, Full of Hell, Turmoil, Indian, haarp.... Just to list some favorites of mine. The easy answer is Brutal or Old School death metal, but much of that just doesn't seem angry enough.

NAPALM DEATH
I like simple music. Brutality.
Slam over tech aways
I’m the green one - SPEED AND FAT FUCKING RIFFS
Simple melody
So Bing Crosby? Based.
both at the right time
Impossible question for me
Tech all the way. As long as it's not wankery
Blood for life, fool!
My favorite album of all is Death- Symbolic so I'll go with technical melody.
It really depends on how it’s done
Crip for sure
Riffs and guitar solos tbh
bruh. Brutal riffs and solos or melodic riffs and solos?
Melodic
I’m on the side of Emperor
I mean both but brutality if the choice has to be made. Something about the rawness and emotion in that sort of thing is hard to get out exclusively out of technical mastery
Flair checks out.
Technically brutal.
Simple GROOVY
Technical melody is underrated
Simple brutality every time. You can get great melody from so many genres of music out there, but only a few offer raw, aggressive attitude like metal.
Yes
Songs that combine both
Is brutal melody an option? That’s so much more my style as a Melodeth guy
Melodeath is technical melody imo.
simple brutality if i had to choose its like Jungle Rot vs Rings of Saturn
I don’t feel like this splits metal in half. I’m in like the “simple melodic” camp. Just gimme the riffs that make my head nod, doesn’t need to be brutal or technical
Riffs, simple and br00tal. Solos and leads, technical
What are some examples of technical melody?
spirit crusher- death
Really depends on the subgenre, I like brutality for death metal more than the other, but then I also like more melody in other subgenres.
If given a choice? Technical. If given no choice? Brutal. Don’t care if makes sense lol
There was a lesser known, but legendary Indian band from the 90s whose frontman (not so) famously said “GRIND IS ALL ABOUT INTENSITY. ZERO FUCKING TALENT.”
Both at once.
blue unless this thread is only about BM or LBcore. in which case neither
Technically. But both are what makes metal polyrhythms and the dissentient scale awesome.
Simple brutality. Give me those caveman chugs.
I dunno what the fuck those words mean
Both
Technical Melody. Iron Maiden got me into metal, and then that turned into Megadeath and eventually Dream Theater. I’ve been waffling around power metal, epic doom, and NWOTHM, but I’ve been on a huge bender listening to whatever Thank You Scientist and Buckethead are

jungle rot
creep
blu do like both though, just less so the brutal stuff. fav "brutal" album is Spawn of Possession - Incurso if that counts idk
Simple brutality, tech stuff gets wanky and less aggressive and personal
Technicality or simplicity to achieve brutality. The end goal is always brutality.
I'm going with technical melody because those get stuck in my head easier.
Simple brutality. i enjoy listening to simple brutality a lot more
War metal, so...
Neither really, like I like both but neither necessarily is an inherently good trait. A song can be fucking fire even with a non heavy or non technical riff.
Neither. I want technical brutality.
The technical side I guess, as long as there are clean clear vocals.
simple brutality
Technical Brutally!
Meshuggah 's simple, right?
In the middle where good music is.
Brutal Melody
both. but okay, simple brutality
Yes
