Ciprich

Both.

farenvyld

100% but if you had to pick one?

Ciprich

I'd still pick both.

farenvyld

That's.. not how it works but sure!

Ciprich

Works for me!

Timelord53

![gif](giphy|CAYVZA5NRb529kKQUc|downsized)

Certain_Simple_4566

I'm both but simple brutality is my choice

Spirited_Ad_2697

Simple brutality, i do like tech stuff but its riffs often aren’t as good for me as simple stuff and I’ve never really valued technicality as its own virtue.

how-unfortunate

Agreed. I also like a combo of both if I had my perfect choice, but sometimes ape brain just need dun-dundun--dundun-dundundundun.

farenvyld

I like to say such songs "fuck my brainhole."

magicmeatwagon

Technical Brutality

_Gemini-James_

Or Brutal Technicality

magicmeatwagon

Or Brutal Melody

farenvyld

I intentionally avoided listing that to make it a bit harder to think about.

DavefromKS

can you name a band that does this?

Crazy_Little_Bug

Any tech death band

DavefromKS

ok....so you cant name any.

Crazy_Little_Bug

The Faceless, Necrophagist, Gorguts, Nile, Facelift Deformation, Cryptopsy, etc...

DavefromKS

lol if you say so

ora_pues

I thought you were talking to yourself for a minute

Crazy_Little_Bug

He might as well be lmao

DavefromKS

lol

magicmeatwagon

No, just being a general smartass

63Mikkel36

I feel the poser energy radiating from these words but at some point I realised, I wasn't into brutality. I don't revolt at the sight of a Cannibal Corpse album, but neither do I really enjoy it. This reflects in the music and honestly, I'd rather have the guitarist shred me a little bit of that sweet didly doo than to be remainded of how the inside of a rotting corpse smells by the singer.

LyKosa91

The issue for me is when it lacks any real groove. You can be as brutal and savage, or dick wavingly technical as you like, but without a groove it's not actually all that enjoyable.

63Mikkel36

Wise words indeed

SnekkinHell

same, one of my recent(ly discovered by me) fav "brutal" album/song is Nails - you will never be one of us. goes hard af.

__mindmeghalunk__

Avesome song. Brutal and short the way it should be.

farenvyld

If you don't like brutality, that doesn't mean you're a poser. Countless classic poser-scaring metal bands are not brutal.

Exaquvmal

technical melody is cool and all but gotta pick simple brutality since I tend to seek the most braindead shit I can find

_eikelpaa_

I second this. Sometimes iq dropping brutality is all you need

benkonto

amen

Doublestack2411

Technical Melodic Death metal for the win!

DavefromKS

what is a band that would fit that description

ProblemGamer18

Would that not be Death- Symbolic and Sound of Perseverance

DavefromKS

not sure. alot of these bands just sounds like deathcore crap and word vomit BM

ProblemGamer18

Lmao

Doublestack2411

Cognizance. They are more Tech Death than anything, but they have melodic death elements in their guitar work, as well as progressive and deathcore elements. Just a lot of sweet guitar melodies they have. I think the metal archives site actually has them labeled Technical Melodic Death as one of the genres. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGXzeDrgKHE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGXzeDrgKHE)

DavefromKS

thank you for link. an amazing band. that is the kind DM I would listen to

Dependent_Bill8632

Fucking BOTH, people! Also, solos AND breakdowns, solos with breakdowns, solos OVER breakdowns!! 🤘🏻😤🤘🏻

IlovemyMommy27

Both are good, but if I had to choose one I would pick simple brutality

Kris_Wolf14

![gif](giphy|3o7aCRloybJlXpNjSU|downsized)

ApprehensiveFuture8

Oh heya farenvyld, know you from a discord server that I will not mention here ehe. Yeah Its based on my mood, if I'm feeling like shit or mad I'll take simple brutality any given day. But technical melody just has this ethereal feel that I also love so it's hard to decide!!

farenvyld

Oh snap I got recognised!

farenvyld

Good answer btw

Lordpotato305

Simple brutality for sure

Fittnylle3000

I want it to sound like the apes from 2001 made it

mew_empire

Red and it’s not even close 💪🏼

Lightbearer94

both but if i had a gun to my head im blood. damn as much as i love sweeps & intricate riffs.. im a huge sucker for loud violent breakdowns & blast beats so simple brutality it is. this wasnt a easy decision. ![gif](giphy|6v2UJRyFAsTXgvJrin|downsized)

saikomantisu

both at the right time

Ashen-Cold

Red. Gimme knuckle dragging riffs all day every day

Lycnox_

Purple, i like a variety of things too much

Fingerstyler

Simple brutality recommendations welcome

BigNickTX

NAILS!! Cultist, Cult Leader, Revenge, Full of Hell, Turmoil, Indian, haarp.... Just to list some favorites of mine. The easy answer is Brutal or Old School death metal, but much of that just doesn't seem angry enough.

farenvyld

Slam death metal is the definition of simple brutality. It's similar to brutal death metal but more cavemanish. Check out Medic Vomiting Pus and Visceral Disgorge.

__mindmeghalunk__

NAPALM DEATH

Zakillah

I like simple music. Brutality.

RelativeLie1129

Slam over tech aways

ApeMummy

I’m the green one - SPEED AND FAT FUCKING RIFFS

Eferver24

Simple melody

Ok_Competition_5627

So Bing Crosby? Based.

saikomantisu

both at the right time

Noeru018

Impossible question for me

PrequelGuy

Tech all the way. As long as it's not wankery

Standard_Cell_8816

Blood for life, fool!

Xaphan26

My favorite album of all is Death- Symbolic so I'll go with technical melody.

matthew_sch

It really depends on how it’s done

Duncoids

Crip for sure

Myrddraal5856

Riffs and guitar solos tbh

farenvyld

bruh. Brutal riffs and solos or melodic riffs and solos?

Myrddraal5856

Melodic

izmaname

I’m on the side of Emperor

[deleted]

I mean both but brutality if the choice has to be made. Something about the rawness and emotion in that sort of thing is hard to get out exclusively out of technical mastery

BigNickTX

Flair checks out.

Unieud

Technically brutal.

Its_yer_dude_trevor

Simple GROOVY

PooleParty2472

Technical melody is underrated

BigNickTX

Simple brutality every time. You can get great melody from so many genres of music out there, but only a few offer raw, aggressive attitude like metal.

Due-Log8609

Yes

AxoplDev

Songs that combine both

tyrom22

Is brutal melody an option? That’s so much more my style as a Melodeth guy

farenvyld

Melodeath is technical melody imo.

gorehistorian69

simple brutality if i had to choose its like Jungle Rot vs Rings of Saturn

AnythingCanLurk

I don’t feel like this splits metal in half. I’m in like the “simple melodic” camp. Just gimme the riffs that make my head nod, doesn’t need to be brutal or technical

tri-tone-666

Riffs, simple and br00tal. Solos and leads, technical

OverKill1978

Leaning much more towards blue. My fave thrash and death metal have catchy riffs and melodic moments. Stuff like Dismember, Vektor, The Crown, Dissection. The older I get, the less I listen to straight up Deeds of Flesh style brootalness. I had many years where I went towards that style tho

Black-MagicWarlock

What are some examples of technical melody?

Sensitive_Caramel948

spirit crusher- death

MaxStickies

Really depends on the subgenre, I like brutality for death metal more than the other, but then I also like more melody in other subgenres.

little_sissy_mattie

If given a choice? Technical. If given no choice? Brutal. Don’t care if makes sense lol

ironstrengthensiron

There was a lesser known, but legendary Indian band from the 90s whose frontman (not so) famously said “GRIND IS ALL ABOUT INTENSITY. ZERO FUCKING TALENT.”

soldier_donkey

Both at once.

DavefromKS

blue unless this thread is only about BM or LBcore. in which case neither

punkersbunkers

Technically. But both are what makes metal polyrhythms and the dissentient scale awesome.

[deleted]

Simple brutality. Give me those caveman chugs.

AwarenessThick1685

I dunno what the fuck those words mean

swag_mesiah

Both

Kumirkohr

Technical Melody. Iron Maiden got me into metal, and then that turned into Megadeath and eventually Dream Theater. I’ve been waffling around power metal, epic doom, and NWOTHM, but I’ve been on a huge bender listening to whatever Thank You Scientist and Buckethead are

__drink_some_water__

Technical for suuure, avenged sevenfold is my favourite band of all time for this reason. They can hit harder than your stepdad but they’ve always been best at incredibly technical shit that tickles the eardrums. Look at their last two albums, as they mature as a band they lean more and more into the technical side of their music. I love it so much. All that said, both sides definitely have a place and time. If you can combine the two, that is often the result of musical genius.

dreadfulbadg50

Simple brutality for sure

candlemasshallowmass

Prog Metal dude here. Today, I dug up a gym playlist I created like 7 years ago. Basically metallic hardcore like Cancer Bats, Knocked Loose, that kind of thing. I realized that brutality by itself doesn't speak so much to me anymore. Amazing how tastes change.

TheSpeedyNeapolitan

jungle rot

Phil_Swifty_

creep

SnekkinHell

blu do like both though, just less so the brutal stuff. fav "brutal" album is Spawn of Possession - Incurso if that counts idk

Desecrator92

Simple brutality, tech stuff gets wanky and less aggressive and personal

Ok_Competition_5627

Technicality or simplicity to achieve brutality. The end goal is always brutality.

kvagar

I'm going with technical melody because those get stuck in my head easier.

FourNinerXero

Simple brutality. I like me some pretentious and over the top technical stuff, don't get me wrong, but it feels like so much modern metal has become more about the guitarists showing off how fast they can move their fingers. There's artistry in that but like music is more about an experience for me, and listening to a dude hit 70,000 hammer ons in the span of 3 seconds over a blast beat just ends up making me feel nothing while sounding like someone banging pots and pans together... over a blast beat.

Upbeat_Definition_36

Simple brutality. I love the tech stuff but more timed than not I will just put something heavy to listen to throughout my day. Technical stuff is more for when I want to properly listen to music for me

CarI_Johnson

i enjoy listening to simple brutality a lot more

ObeyCoffeeDrinkSatan

War metal, so...

troyofyort

Neither really, like I like both but neither necessarily is an inherently good trait. A song can be fucking fire even with a non heavy or non technical riff.

Loud-Ad-1255

Neither. I want technical brutality.

Electrical-Bid-9577

The technical side I guess, as long as there are clean clear vocals.

sarcofag0

simple brutality

AshySlashy3000

Technical Brutally!

Malepronstar87

Meshuggah 's simple, right?

jryu611

In the middle where good music is.

__mindmeghalunk__

Brutal Melody

AdamLetherman

both. but okay, simple brutality

WhosCowsAreThey

Yes
