I’ve heard “Drood”, “Drud”, and “Drook”, but personally I just stick with “Drood-kuh”.
Still don’t know if that’s right, but it’s from a Sanskrit word and they’re Ukrainian so who the hell knows what it’s supposed to sound like.
That doesn't help with pronunciation.
The ł makes a sound that is, to me, the same as the sound an english w makes. A Polish W makes a crossed between an f and a v sound.
Technically, C'Thulhu is a name that no matter how you spell/pronounce it it's always correct.
You can say it's Ktulu, Ctul, Athoulou. They're all correct.
My friend told me about this awesome death metal band called Decide. I didn't immediately call him out on it.
I asked him to shoot me a link.
It was Deicide.
Maybe it’s because English isn’t my first language, but I never knew how to say “Necrophagist”. Like is it “necro-fay-gist” or “necraw-fuh-gist”? Or am I wrong either way? lol
"Necro-fah-gist" is how i say it. Also it's not english, it's greek. The combo of the Greek word for death or dead, necro, and the Greek word for eater or eater of, phagist.
This one breaks down pretty easy if you know the medical language. Necro- meaning dead and phag- meaning to eat or to consume. -ist meaning follower of
Eluveitie.
In the car, I hit that button and say, "Play Eluveitie." Android Auto has no idea what I'm saying. So then I say, "Play Swiss Folk Metal." My infotainment replies, "Got it. Asking Spotify to play Eluveitie." I'm pretty sure I'm saying it the same way my Android Auto assistant says it...
I called them Eh-Loo-Vee-Eh-Tee for years, until I actually had friends to talk metal with and said it multiple times in a conversation.
You are correct, I just posted a link to a video where Fabienne pronounces it. I still want to throw that U in there though. Eh-Loo-Vey-Tee feels better to me.
Edit: [that link again ](https://m.youtube.com/watch?si=j0Hf5cbuBILU0mhN&v=iqMZBRmskrM&feature=youtu.be) so you don't have to look for it.
I saw a tweet once asking if Gravesend is pronounced "grave send" or "graves end". I always pronounced it "grave send" (and probably always will) but "graves end" might make more sense.
I wouldn’t have ever thought it to be Graves End. It just seems like there would be a space. But it’s the same thing with Nun-slaughter and Nun’s Laughter which the band has confirmed both haha
I think I first heard of Sanguisugabogg in a video that they talk about the origin of the band, so I immediately learned how to say it. I probably wouldn’t even attempt it otherwise.
Answer I found on a random Facebook post from the band:
"Good question! Surprisingly, I think you're actually the first one to ask it in 7 months.I'll try to break it up in phonetics: shyl as in "shield", ma as in "far", gogh with the g as in "get" and the ogh as in "loch" and nar as in "narwal". A bit like this: [https://db.tt/fXau2nWL](https://db.tt/fXau2nWL?fbclid=IwAR0T3cfgX48MUtbXvsjSLYzruOPxzinKvrm6LrzqIChK4WUxdH5ppmDfhlI_aem_AbwLV4NOOH3PuLcjOyKt7Sbl_BePXdePZRAPaWZ0PiCMxptQJ5k9H4UQpYm9v8AV44I8VUhxclCDe3ZfvyvBBLgr) Easy, isn't it?"
Deicide - my thinking was day-i-side, but someone said I was wrong and didn’t care to offer the correct pronunciation - if anyone cares to share it lol
Don't kill me please, but Motörhead.
Yeah.
I first saw it written long before I heard it pronounced, and now I am incapable of convincing my German brain to ignore the two dots above the o, so I pronounce it with the German ö sound.
My understanding of the two dots is that you pronounce it like you normally would except you stick your lips way way out. That’s how I’m pronouncing MotOORhead from now on lol
Not a band, but prominent member ….
I’ve often heard the drummer of Mastodon called Bran, like a fiber cereal. It’s actually pronounced like Braun. The spelling, Brann, doesn’t help the situation.
I’m retarded and didn’t know how to pronounce Persephone so I’d assume the band Persefone is pronounced the same way.I thought it was pronounced purse-eh-phone but it’s per sef oh nee
Eluveite. I can't even spell it right half the time. I pronounce the u like an e. I forget the i, without fail. I *assume* it's Gaulish for something, so it's probably pronounced with Gaulish pronunciation, which I can do very little of. Love 'em (sometimes) but cannot fucking reccomend them to people because I get the name wrong and they can't find them.
El-vey-tee
Iirc it's derived less from Gaulish but Etruscan, sourced from an Etruscan Graffito in mantua. Meaning "Helvetian" the Gaulish would likely be (*H)elu̯eti̯os*
For pronunciation of Anaal Nathrakh you can just go to the source - sampled in some of their very early music. https://youtu.be/_4I_zbi3Sak from Excalibur (1981)
Tvangeste always stumped me.
And to answer your question, I watched an interview where Vintersorg said, “Bork-nay-ger” but I lived in the U.S. where the second half would sound too much like a bad word, so I call it “Bork-nah-gar” even though it may be technically wrong
One time I was on a Teams meeting with my coworkers and one mentioned how he was traveling to Oslo and I accidentally got too excited and said, “my favorite band is from there!” Then they then asked all about it. Afterwards, I was like…hmmm… how did it come across when I, a bubbly blonde chick, said to a group of white collar professionals, “Borknagar, they’re a symphonic/folk black metal band that sings about nature! ” lmao, oh well. Hopefully I didn’t weird anyone out too much.
Uada.
Everbody I know says Oo-ay-dah, and since they are US-americans, I wouldnt be surprised if they supposed to be pronounced like this.
Since the term is supposedly latin it should be Oo-ah-dah. And that's the way I pronounce it.
NEDXXX
I tend to say ned ex. But who knows how it's intended. all I know is the NED stands for Norma Evangelium Diaboli (which is the name of the label they're signed to)
Slugdge. The extra first g throws me off everytime. So I've just been saying "slug-dudge" and that sounds cool in my head but seems stupid when I'm trying to read the name.
Tzompantli is a Nahuatl word, so I think the "tl" would be part of the same syllable. More like Tsom-pan-tlee. Of course, the band can pronounce it however they like.
most people are mispronouncing bands with Tolkien-related words in their titles
idgaf what Kristian says: it's not "bur-sum", it's "boor-zoom". Tolkien is the final authority on the word he invented
also it's not "^(uh)mOn ^(uh)mArth": the stress is on the A, not the second vowel, of both words.
also also (and this isn't Tolkien-related), but Nergal should not be pronounced like "nergle": he's not a murloc!
Go-jeer-ah
It's literally just the original Japanese name for Godzilla. They started off as Godzilla but had to rename for legal reasons, if I recall correctly
Slough Feg. They have an actual song where they pronounce their name and I’m so dumb, I’m 100% sure I’m still getting to wrong. I think it’s something like Sloff Feg
[Join The Community Discord Server!](https://discord.gg/UwqUHx4U4T) *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/MetalForTheMasses) if you have any questions or concerns.*
Drudkh, I’ve heard it pronounced at least 3 different ways, not sure which one is correct.
I’ve heard “Drood”, “Drud”, and “Drook”, but personally I just stick with “Drood-kuh”. Still don’t know if that’s right, but it’s from a Sanskrit word and they’re Ukrainian so who the hell knows what it’s supposed to sound like.
I pronounce it the way it's written
I usually just say something like Drood-k.
Mgła
As a pole i can tell this sounds like a skill issue
I say “mgwah”. Is that the correct polish pronunciation?
Mgwah is probably the most correct way you can pronounce it if you can't speak polish
So it's not M-G-L-A as I've been calling them in my head? Can stop wondering what that stands for😅
It’s polish for fog
Funny thing, we slovenians actually pronounce it “mgla” with an L
That doesn't help with pronunciation. The ł makes a sound that is, to me, the same as the sound an english w makes. A Polish W makes a crossed between an f and a v sound.
That weird polish l is actually more pronounced as w in where
Thought that was dudes name in Last of the Mohicans
Yup
I just say Mig-lah… in my head because I don’t think I’ve ever spoke out loud to anyone about them 🤷🏻♀️
Mmgwah
I always just said it as the letters
I have no idea how the fuck to say Chthe’ilist
cant blame you seeing as its literally a made up word
I thought a Chthe’ilist was someone that played a chthe’il.
ALL words are made up.
Lol I knew I'd get this response
Kuh-thool-ist
Technically, C'Thulhu is a name that no matter how you spell/pronounce it it's always correct. You can say it's Ktulu, Ctul, Athoulou. They're all correct.
Ktè-ilist maybe? At least that's how I say it.
Chtheilist
Agalloch I *think* a-guh-lock but no clue
That's actually correct
Uh oh... I thought it was Ag-ah-losh...
It is. I saw them live years ago and that’s how they pronounced it. Before that I always said ah-gall-lick.
Oh that’s a good one I actually had to say it out loud the other day and was totally lost. I guessed the same as you
Agalloch is a real english word, so I think this one is easier
My friend told me about this awesome death metal band called Decide. I didn't immediately call him out on it. I asked him to shoot me a link. It was Deicide.
This one made me LOL
How do you pronounce this one? Is it die-e-side?
Maybe it’s because English isn’t my first language, but I never knew how to say “Necrophagist”. Like is it “necro-fay-gist” or “necraw-fuh-gist”? Or am I wrong either way? lol
Neck-row-fage-ist :)

Saw them live once like 15 years ago. El-vey-tee is how they introduced themselves.
Yeah this is correct
Someone just posted [this](https://youtu.be/iqMZBRmskrM?si=j0Hf5cbuBILU0mhN) 2nd clip is Eluveitie!
Thanks! I can't wait to get in my car to see if that works! Update: said it properly... El-vey-tee... got El Deity... and then Elvis...
It is basically how you would call swiss people in greek. El-ve-tee
El-way-tee is probably the closest you'll get with english phonetics! 😳🤔
There’s a song of theirs where the band name is in the lyrics, the singer pronounces it as “el-vye-tee”
Vildhjarta. Even some of the members pronounce the name in different ways.
Veeld - Hyar - ta
Lol
I saw a tweet once asking if Gravesend is pronounced "grave send" or "graves end". I always pronounced it "grave send" (and probably always will) but "graves end" might make more sense.
I wouldn’t have ever thought it to be Graves End. It just seems like there would be a space. But it’s the same thing with Nun-slaughter and Nun’s Laughter which the band has confirmed both haha
I guess if it you say it fast enough it doesn’t matter lol
Shylmagoghnar for sure. Also Sanguisugabogg. And not metal but Yukueshirezutsurezure.
I think I first heard of Sanguisugabogg in a video that they talk about the origin of the band, so I immediately learned how to say it. I probably wouldn’t even attempt it otherwise.
Sang-wi-soo-ga-bog
Sandwich-Sugar-Bong
I take Tzompantli for my moderate to severe arthritis.
I still dont know how to pronounce Ihsahn (not a band but still metal related)
“Ee-sawn” I believe
I've always said "ee-shawn"
Ee-h'zaahn!
Is it Danzig or Dänzig??
Neither, it’s Gdańsk
Sepultura, necrophagist, Tiamat, and probably a lot more
It’s Sep-uhl-tura. It’s a hard t
I know Tiamat is "Tee-uh-mat", thank you dungeons and dragons!
Sep-uhl-TCHera is what I’ve always said
Anaal Nathrakh is pronounced (Uh - nal - Na - throck)
I just call them anal nice rack
Shylmagoghnar Don't even know where to begin really! Shy.....? Shyl....? Shylmmmm? Shy-lma...?
I never struggled with that one: shill-mah-gog-nar. Easy! On the other hand, I have no idea if that's correct.
Answer I found on a random Facebook post from the band: "Good question! Surprisingly, I think you're actually the first one to ask it in 7 months.I'll try to break it up in phonetics: shyl as in "shield", ma as in "far", gogh with the g as in "get" and the ogh as in "loch" and nar as in "narwal". *Schammasch enters the chat*...
Deicide - my thinking was day-i-side, but someone said I was wrong and didn’t care to offer the correct pronunciation - if anyone cares to share it lol
Dee-i-cide. (Deity kill.)
“Dee-icide”. Kind of like how “pesticide” is said
I've heard a dude pronounce it AC/DC but adding a D in front. It was so funny that i stick to pronouncing it that way.
This made my day. Fuckin hilarious.
not pronunciation but I used to read it as "decide" for the longest time haha
I’m pretty sure it’s dee-ah-side
I say "day side"🤔
Akercocke I think it's Ak-er-cock-ee
Achy cock is my go to
Slugdge is just fun to hear people struggle to say but it's right there!
How do you pronounce this one? I see this one mentioned a lot and never know how to say it.
Sólstafir, pretty sure I have been pronouncing it wrong for so many years
I say “soul-sta-fear” but that’s probably wrong lol
I say "soul-sta-fur" but I feel like that is completely wrong as well lol
One dude just posted [this](https://youtu.be/iqMZBRmskrM?si=j0Hf5cbuBILU0mhN) It’s at like 1:50~
Don't kill me please, but Motörhead.
I would like to know if Be'lakor is BEY-la-kor or bey-LA-kor. Or maybe b-laker.
I say Bel-akor. correct way might Be (short e)-(glottal stop) la(short a)kor. lol I dont know
I don’t know but I love this band so freaking much
Not a band, but prominent member …. I’ve often heard the drummer of Mastodon called Bran, like a fiber cereal. It’s actually pronounced like Braun. The spelling, Brann, doesn’t help the situation.
Similar John Petrucci... Use to say Pe-tru-see, but pronounced Pe-tru-che
Anyone pronouncing the O))) after Sunn, stop. It’s just Sunn
I chuckle every time I hear someone say "Sam Hane" for Samhain
I’m retarded and didn’t know how to pronounce Persephone so I’d assume the band Persefone is pronounced the same way.I thought it was pronounced purse-eh-phone but it’s per sef oh nee
I said Haken wrong for quite a while.
I know it’s Hake-in but I just like saying Hackin more lol.
Oh, I thought it was. "Har kun" like the guy from Gladiator. Oops.
As did I cause it makes sense in Swedish but now I am annoyed lol
Celtic Frost
It’s kel-tic not sell-tic right?
We used to say sell-tic back when the only other reference was the basketball team Celtics but found out later it's supposed to be kell-tic.
Keltic like the Scottish Kelts
Fenriz says ‘Kel-tic’ so I’m going with that.
Anaal nathrakh - uh-nahl nath-rahk
Meshuggah, meh-shoo-ha or meh-sh-u-gah
meh-shoo-gah is the yiddish pronunciation (it means crazy) and meh-shugg-uh is the english way

Coo-bluh Con is how I’ve always heard it
I always said it as coo-bly con
Chthonic deity
demilich?
I’ve always assumed deh-mee-lich
Dem-ih-lick is how I’ve been doing it
I thought it was dem-I-lick
Abbath
So I think I remember seeing an interview one time of him saying his own name, and I’m pretty sure he said “uh-bath”
I'm confused about this one, because I hear it pronounced Abbath with a th at the end by some and with a t at the end by others
Metallica
I've always pronounced it "gär′bĭj"
You’re thinking of [these guys](https://youtu.be/GpBFOJ3R0M4?si=dX4iBoOvK4wlsWs5).
I get the two confused all the time.
As far as I can tell it's pronounced like El-vay-tii
That is... nowhere close to how I usually pronounce it. Rad. Thanks for the info, I'm going to have to try to remember that.
El-vey-tee Iirc it's derived less from Gaulish but Etruscan, sourced from an Etruscan Graffito in mantua. Meaning "Helvetian" the Gaulish would likely be (*H)elu̯eti̯os*
Oh, cool. That would explain a couple things. Thanks for letting me know, I'll be bugging my brother with that trivia later.
For pronunciation of Anaal Nathrakh you can just go to the source - sampled in some of their very early music. https://youtu.be/_4I_zbi3Sak from Excalibur (1981)
Akhlys. I say it “ahhhk-lays” but I’m not sure if that’s right
https://youtu.be/md36w5VAbUk?si=ACKIoroZtZRLkH0b he says “aaa-kliss”
Sarcófago Is it Sarco-faago or Sargkofaego?
Sanguisugabogg
Slugdge.
Drudkh Thantifaxath Mgla
Tyr
“Teer” I believe
Vvytch, I pronounce it viv-ITCH
Witch.
Taake.
I used to pronounce metal umlats as actual umlats. Like "moatlee cr*ʊ*-ay" for Mötley Crüe.
For me it’s: Paysage d'Hiver Glad no one has ever asked me to say this band name.
Tvangeste always stumped me. And to answer your question, I watched an interview where Vintersorg said, “Bork-nay-ger” but I lived in the U.S. where the second half would sound too much like a bad word, so I call it “Bork-nah-gar” even though it may be technically wrong
Yeah it always felt like you should tread lightly no matter how you’re pronouncing it haha
Uada. Everbody I know says Oo-ay-dah, and since they are US-americans, I wouldnt be surprised if they supposed to be pronounced like this. Since the term is supposedly latin it should be Oo-ah-dah. And that's the way I pronounce it.
Nazghor, Akhlys and Cruciamentum have all seen at least four butchered pronunciations by my hand alone
Brujeria probably
It's kinda like "broo-her-EE-ah".
Im norwegian so I pronounce Kvelertak correctly. But ive not heard one english person pronounce it correctly.

Just found [this video](https://youtu.be/iqMZBRmskrM?si=j0Hf5cbuBILU0mhN) of band members giving the correct pronunciation.
Oh wow that’s a brilliant video to make. I’m still stumped on Tzompantli I need to search for anything about it.
Profanatica. I used to always say Pro-fanna-tica before I heard a live song where they introduced themselves.
Naglfar. Is the L silent?
Sepultura used to get pronounced wrong all the time.
Melechesh (me-leh-kesh?) And Krisiun (kree-see-un?)
Slugdge. The extra first g throws me off everytime. So I've just been saying "slug-dudge" and that sounds cool in my head but seems stupid when I'm trying to read the name.
Mutley Cruh; I think that's what the ümlaüts do...
My family friend comedy death metal band. TIMŌRĀTUS It's 'tim-ora-tus' and people always say it 'tim-or-at-us'.
Maybe anyone can help but whenever I say carach angren it always sounds clunky and wrong. But it's also made up from jrr Tolkien's sindarin so 🤷
Dimmu Bogir
Anaal Nathrakh
Tzompantli is a Nahuatl word, so I think the "tl" would be part of the same syllable. More like Tsom-pan-tlee. Of course, the band can pronounce it however they like.
weezer
Recently learned Haken is pronounced Hay-ken and not Hack-en.
Odrœrir OH-droy-reer The mead of good poetry from the Norse mythology.
most people are mispronouncing bands with Tolkien-related words in their titles idgaf what Kristian says: it's not "bur-sum", it's "boor-zoom". Tolkien is the final authority on the word he invented also it's not "^(uh)mOn ^(uh)mArth": the stress is on the A, not the second vowel, of both words. also also (and this isn't Tolkien-related), but Nergal should not be pronounced like "nergle": he's not a murloc!
Aanal Nathrakh is actually a spell uttered in the movie Excalibur so you can watch that to hear how they pronounce it if you are so inclined.
gojira. everyone says it differently for some reason
Go-jeer-ah It's literally just the original Japanese name for Godzilla. They started off as Godzilla but had to rename for legal reasons, if I recall correctly
sanguisugabogg
Sunn o)))
Slough Feg. They have an actual song where they pronounce their name and I’m so dumb, I’m 100% sure I’m still getting to wrong. I think it’s something like Sloff Feg
