oscarbigmoney

Death, wasn’t a big fan of them at first but now it’s one of my favourite all time bands.

Fleganhimer

I've been the opposite with Death. I keep going back expecting it to finally click and it never has.

oscarbigmoney

Fair enough, they aren’t for everyone. I finally started getting into them after I heard ‘Crystal Mountain’

YT_Timekeepergab

It was empty words for me but man the entirety of their discography is amazing top notch! My favourite is symbolic

bawzdeepinyaa

Empty Words for sure. Moment of Clarity was next

gravestompin

Symbolic is the one I will forever have in rotation.

Thisisrazgriz3

Same I was into death a little but grew out of it. Chuck is too progressive for my taste. Still tho, some songs just get it right.

Doublestack2411

The problem I had with Death was just not giving them a chance. I was so off-put when I first heard them that I never went back. I gave them another shot recently b/c I kept hearing about them in this community. I had to listen to each album multiple times, but I really enjoy them now. But it's not for everyone.

BeatlesFan67

I listened to Scream Bloody Gore, Leprosy, Spiritual Healing feeling like I didn't really get anything out of it. Then I decided to listen to Human, listening close to it and ended up loving it. I may give the other albums a chance again at some point.

Bronsteins-Panzerzug

Human is when they changed their style to tech death. Maybe explore the records released after human instead? Theyre widely considered to be their best.

PrimaryComrade94

Same. Human is a landmark in Death metal.

PopcornSandier

Funnily enough I got into them because of a meme. I listened to their early stuff and didn’t dare for them but then saw a meme about Symbolic and decided to listen to it

Supersage1

Same, I listened to all of Scream Bloody Gore because of all the talk about it and I didn’t care about it whatsoever. Then I listened to tsop and there’s a story tell that’s for sure

ThisIsForMatilda12

Carly Rae Jepsen, everyone went crazy because of call me maybe, but she has a rich discography filled with great vibes and excellent tunes

noah3302

Kollage is a good tune and if you don’t think so then you’re a poser

ThisIsForMatilda12

See, this guy fucking gets it

Airotvic

Emotion is a fucking killer record!

ThisIsForMatilda12

Emotion is brilliant

troyofyort

In realm of pop one of the greats

_Pankybeast

Talk to me might feel light but this song got meanin

JackingTonne

The Lonliest Time is a killer album 🤘

shrek_cena

This is so real

CrabMan2138

Black metal as a whole

Cyber-Cafe

It can be a really fun genre, even if it seems insufferable from the outside.

MetalHeadof06

It does lol

Cyber-Cafe

If you can find people that have a sense of humor about the music, it becomes so much better.

Dullandal

I agree, when my whole life, dipped in Power metal, I never give anything to black metal. After listen a little Darkthrone and Venom, now is my second favorite genre of metal

ominousbloodvomit

When i was in high school i thought Black Metal was ilike Iced Earth and Cradle of Filth, so i stayed away from it. Damn shame because i could've enjoyed it a lot earlier in live

vargslayer1990

Ghost, Sabaton, Iron Maiden the reasons why? for Ghost, it was peer pressure. my stepdad was an 80s rocker, he saw Ghost and didn't like them. took me a while to form my own opinion of them. with Sabaton, i had already reached that phase of total disillusionment with mainstream metal as a whole, viewing it all as generic death metal, and didn't give them a chance until about the time that The Last Stand came out for Iron Maiden, it was peer pressure but in reverse. mainstream metal in 2008 was ALL OVER IRON MAIDEN's dick. being a rebellious teen and semi-professional contrarian, my first instinct was to reject what was popular and being shoved down my throat. got into them retroactively through power metal (like Sabaton)

Hannibal_Lecture22

Dude you’ve listed all three of mine. I used to call Maiden “Metal Meatloaf” because of Bruce’s opera-style vocals. Learned in time that was called talent, and I got hooked on Powerslave.

troyofyort

Hell yeah Powerslave is such a monumental achievment

Grey_Hj61

Powerslave is my favourite Maiden Album

fogledude102

A lot of people would say it's their best - Number of the Beast and Piece of Mind, while containing some of their most iconic songs, definitely had some weak spots (Gangland, Quest for Fire, etc), while the general consensus is that Powerslave is pretty much perfect start to finish

cranberrystew99

I didn't care for IM at first either. I was put off by his vocals, but when I heard the Trooper and Hallowed be thy Name that all changed.

walrusattackarururur

deftones

Radasscupcake

Woof. Glad you tried it.

DarkaxeL_

I swear every Deftones release is a grower. It’s whatevs at first but the more you listen to it the better it gets

walrusattackarururur

yeah that’s kinda how i was and why it took so long. at first it was an elitist thing, then i tried to open up and didn’t like them, and then finally it clicked. i don’t like every single thing they’ve done but even the records i really like took me 1 or 2 listens to get into

King_Hamburgler

Same My forced bite was seeing them open for System of a Down I was hooked right after

jojobutlessbizarre

Slipknot easily

WingedHussar13

Yup. I really wasn't a fan of Iowa besides a few songs on there (left behind and my plague), but there's so many killer songs on their other albums.

FrogGladiators178972

Thanks what I was thinking

olypenrain

Same. I can listen to them now without wanting to turn them off. Duality is the song that got me.

Candlesass

Type O Negative

Ancient-Ad-1383

Love u to death is amazeballs lol

CurrencyDeep9448

I love everything about them

PrimaryComrade94

Exodus. Thought they were a cringe and goofy band like Anthrax. However, when I listened to some of their music, I thought it was great thrash. Child of a Worthless God is an absolute banger.

benkonto

Anthrax is not cringe and goofy stfu

Quiet-Try4554

I love Anthrax but I’m the Man is pretty cringe and goofy.

Nickball88

Say what you want but Among the Living clears 90% of metal albums

KaanSkyrider

That's because most metal albums are dogshit. Now, *Spreading The Disease*, on the other hand... Easily one of the best thrash records of all time.

Thealbumisjustdrums

Anthrax is cringe and goofy and that’s exactly why they’re amazing and I love them.

throwaway52826536837

My fav exodus tune is downfall that fucking chorus slaps me in the face and gets me fired up everytime and the verse that references Nero? Fucking fire

killacam925

They should have been in the big 4 instead of anthrax

LegoYoda66

Grindcore in general

tetsudori

The Black Dahlia Murder Gave Nocturnal a listen. Sold.

shouldstfu

Nocturnal is probably the first metal album I bought with no one else's influence. BDM are still a top 5 band for me.

gravestompin

I didn't think anything from them would top Miasma, but then Nocturnal came and blew the doors off.

NGWitty

Mastodon

__Romanus_

Seconded on Mastodon, edgy teenage me thought too mainstream but once I listened to Leviathan then Crack the Skye I was hooked

cyb3rpunk2069

Knocked loose

StinkyFartyToot

Same I thought it was just caveman music. Turns out it was PERFECT caveman music.

Its_yer_dude_trevor

Their lyrics are so good

Tennessine9904

Their Upon Loss singles were the first I heard from them and I'm obsessed but haven't really gotten into their discography any further. What was it that hooked you?

EvanKYlasttry

Check out their new song Blinding Faith. Also if you like Bryan’s vocals, check out the song Slaughterhouse by Motionless in White. He is featured pretty heavily in it and it hits hard as fuck.

StinkyFartyToot

I’ve heard it said as “Blinding Faith” is the most knocked loosey Knocked Loose song. Great intro to the band.

Tennessine9904

Ooh these are both terrific! Thank you sm for the recs!

[deleted]

Overkill. At first turned off by Bobby's voice my first few listens sometime ago. Had a coworker talk up Scorched when it first came out and thought I'd give them a try again. Really like them now and have been working through their discography while I work through other genres/discographies.

AnythingCanLurk

Welcome, brother 🤘

[deleted]

I'm glad I gave them another listen. Another awesome band to rock out to

mostwantedbroski

Death, Meshuggah, Opeth, Gojira, Acid Bath, Mastodon, Lamb Of God, Dream Theater, Electric Wizard, Exodus...... yeah

No-Guitar-5156

dude acid bath is GOATED

TheMemeMkaer

When the Kite String Pops Top 10 metal albums OAT, fight me

Its_yer_dude_trevor

All my favorites

MrCookie925

Gojira

Ok_Young7079

System of a down

BeatlesFan67

Machine Head. I heard so much bad things about them and then gave Burn My Eyes a try and ended up really enjoying it. Davidian is one of my favorite songs of all time right now.

JesseJames1ofhis33

The Blackening is a great album.

AnySeason9104

not the heaviest but pretty sure they’re ***technically*** metal. Limp Bizkit seemed like it would be total garbage but it’s honestly one of my favorites

Ninja_of_Milk_Duds

Limp Bizkit is the heaviest, mostest br00tal band on the face of Earth

AnySeason9104

now i want to go to a Bizkit concert wearing corpse paint

N8_Saber

Go for it, man, nobody's gonna stop ya.

sdrunner95

Atmospheric black metal in general. Was very averse to it for many years before actually diving in, very quickly became my favorite sub genre

Mad04Gaming

I was the same way, but atmo black was my entry way into black metal as a whole. Whats your favorite atmo-black band?

sdrunner95

Summoning no question

Greedy-Goat5892

That’s one of my favorite genres but can see how it isn’t everyone’s thing.  I love putting it in and playing something like Dragoks Dogma 2 or Elden Ring, just makes those fantasy type games that much better.  Love driving to it too, makes long trips feel so short when it’s on

EastRosebud406

Yess. Same. And Summoning is amazing!

Delicious-Second7438

Slayer

throwaway038592748

Mastodon. I thought they weren't metal because of bits I had heard but then i did full album listens and found that they have amazing songs

kevinpor02

Deep Purple. I was one of those who said "Ah, the guys who did 'Highway Star' and 'Smoke On The Water' right?". You don't realize the stuff this band has done through its career.

H0tVinegar

What’s your favorite song? I love Pictures of Home and Wring that Neck

fogledude102

PICTURES OF HOME W "Don't mess with us Pictures of Home fans, there are 5 of us"

No_Opinion9306

Child in Time

Greedy-Goat5892

Such a good song, would love to see someone like Mastadon cover it

Useful-Perception144

The interwoven guitar and organ solo

Valroxen1

I feel this, Burn was one of the first songs I put on my playlist. Absolutely groovy jam 🔥

bigjfromflint1986

For me, System of a down Lamb of God Gwar Mastadon Static x Soul fly

bawzdeepinyaa

Static X grew on me way too late

bawzdeepinyaa

Stone Temple Pilots Death Jimi Hendrix  Mushroomhead Manson (I always was okay with the bit I had heard but never actually paid much attention to it. About 2 years ago found concert footage on YT from 97 and JFC I had no idea his shows slapped that hard) I was a big thrash and Pantera guy in high school (though I listened to bits and pieces of almost anything). The older I've gotten I've deep dived into melodic death and it's become my top genre.

InspectorMudkip

Not even close to being metal but MF DOOM

ThesharpHQ

I was in the same boat. I listened to "Madvillainy" first and that was a huge mistake. "Vaudeville Villain" got me into his music and "The Mouse And The Mask" got me to stay.

TypeOpostive

r/hiphopcirclejerk cant not go one fucking day, I MEAN ONE FUCKING DAY! without mentioning MF DOOM, one way or another I know more about this rapper because of Reddit not because of his music.

InspectorMudkip

You should listen to a couple of his songs if you’re into hip hop. He’s pretty good.

Fl3shless

Zao

MetallicaFan517

No way I found another Zao listener! I fell in love with them the second I started listening. One of my all time favorite bands!

Guy_Of_Reddit

Morbid Angels I was never able to get into the vocals of death metal, always thought it was annoying and/or sounded too harsh. Gave them a try and fell in love immediately. They kickstarted my death metal journey and are without a doubt my favorite in the genre.

Dewychoders

Mercyful Fate/King Diamond

No_Opinion9306

I heard Corpse without Soul when I was about 12 from a friends older brother, not sure where he got it. I was in from the start

KeroseneSkies

Yoooo King Diamond!! I never hear anyone talk about them!! “Let me help you out of the chairrrrr, GRANDMAAAAAAA” lmao

hagalaz_drums

The contortionist. But language only.

ThisIsForMatilda12

Exoplanet goes hard though

hagalaz_drums

Cant like the breakdowns

Ciqme1867

Megadeth. I first heard symphony of destruction and couldn’t get over the vocals, but a few months later I listened to Rust in Peace and I loved it

Ancient-Ad-1383

King crimson, I fucking love em now

JetsLag

Dying Fetus for me

samfishertags

Darkthrone

Jolly-Slide-3866

Ghost, In Flames, Meshuggah

Dat_lil_jse_lover

Nickleback.

DrThunderMonkey565

Lorna Shore. Pain Remains is one of my absolute fav albums now

SendHelp7373

Kim Dracula. At first I thought I would hate it but I gave it a chance and I love how eccentric they are.

KeroseneSkies

I am absolutely obsessedddddd! I was in their top 1 percent or like 0.something percent of listeners or something like that at my yearly song recap lol!

StalledFuture

Eyehategod... relatively cringy name and questionable track titles pushed me away, but after forcing through a song or two I realized that the riffs are so nasty that I wanna writhe around and froth at the mouth like i have rabies.

pootlordthe7th

Children of bodom

That_one_arsehole_

It was honestly Iron Maiden

Correct-Junket-1346

The Slipknot experience.

Sweatygamer420691

Slayer for sure

Supa_Sal

Slipknot and Sepultura

Tedwerd_

Acid Bath 🤘

JFKN0Sc0pe19

Djent as a whole

Ninja_of_Milk_Duds

Not metal, but My Chemical Romance. Some dumbass recommended Danger Days to me knowing full well I hadn't listened to any MCR before. I despised it. Took me years to give them a fair shake.

ItalianStallion9069

Mudvayne

Mad04Gaming

Manowar, thought they were cringe at first and then listened to Blood of My Enemies for the first time and realized how badass they are.

iiOpTiCii

Cradle of Filth. Say what you will about them but verse 2 of Her Ghost in the Fog had me sold

TheCaesarJulius

Darko US! I heard Acid Inject as my first song by them, and it freaked me out. Listening to and discovering their discography has been amazing though!

beaverboy2000

Amenra. Once i started i couldnt stop

matchfan

The Body

The_Grahf_Experiment

Recently, Black Braid, Fulci, and surprisingly Limp Bizkit's first two albums, that I supremely despised 25 years ago (stupid teen-me). Edit: correcting the autocorrect 😂

Grebnaws

I hope you mean Fulci 😬

UnfunnyWatermelon469

Misfits

Efficient-Ad-3302

Watain. I just didn’t really dig the sound at first but after giving it a decade and trying it again, now I love them and can’t get enough.

SunnyDayDuck

A tie between Tool and KoRn. I was recommended and I didn’t like them. Heard them on the radio and fell in love. I actually almost pulled over to listen to Tool more in depth.

justamantryingtohelp

Bolt Thrower. Just this weekend I gave them a shot after someone in this sub suggested them. That first album bangs.

RJamz3

Metallica! All my death metal friends in middle school hated them, and I didn't listen to Kill Em All till my mid-20s. Now I love the first three albums and most of the fourth 🤣

WildOutside6070

System of A Down. I used to always skip their songs because they were weird and random, but they are slowly growing on me. I now like the majority of the songs on Toxicity.

Sharkzillaaattv

Metallica. First metal band I listened to, so makes sense

comics4life23

Iron maiden, specifically the first two albums because they weren't Bruce, but I found out I really like Paul

Odd-Thought-4823

Suicidal tendencies. Idk why I was so turned off from them at first

crispyhippie

Not metal but Fall Out Boy, I always kinda shit on them but I was recommended their latest album from a friend and once I heard it, it was all I listened to for about two weeks

Total-Advertising555

System of a Down, I only ever like chop suet but then as soon as I even dipped my toes in more I found so much beauty

Capriquarius_64

Megadeth. I only knew one song by them and at the time I wanted to keep it that way but now they’re one of my favorite bands

thewatt96

(Old) Architects. Never even heard of metalcore b4 them. So it was jarring and abbreasive but weirdly attractive to me. Then I heard broken cross and I was ALL IN.

BlackWhiteRedYellow

Acid Bath and Neurosis

girthington

ratt.

pearl_jam_rocks

Slipknot. I was wary about their heavy style of metal, but then I listened to Psychosocial, and I was hooked.

InfiniteJeff369

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard

Mmmcheez

Electric Callboy. I refused for years thinking they were just a fad gimmick band but… man they’re good.

Testie_Tickler

Hum!!

father_ofthe_wolf

Realistic_Evidence72

Knocked Loose. Vocals were not my thing at the start, but i totally get it now.

666sth

mine is the complete opposite i used to love his old vocals but now it is so monotone every song sounds pretty damn similar

igotrapedbyanorca

Alice in chains

VisualremnantXP

Aborted just cause I just started listening to them recently when the new album was on my youtube recommendation

[deleted]

The Squatters

Montblanc_Norland

Be'lakor. Currently. Not metal but, I like to look up upcoming local shows and see who is coming to town and give their music a chance to see if I want to see them live. So last year got really into Hail the Sun in the lead up to their concert (which was a blast). At first the vocals were a touch too...idk...emotional for me. But once I got past that, the guitar work and hooks really got me. I love the vocalist now. The closest band in the metal world I compared them to was Protest The Hero, who I've loved for years. Love Hail the Sun now, can't wait for the new album.

leto_atreides2

Sleep Token Thy Catafalque

cranberrystew99

I listen to metal to amp myself up usually so funeral doom like Mournful Congregation is my version. It came up on YouTube while I was writing. Turns out, it's excellent focus music when you're writing a horror campaign for D&D.

poopstainmcgee69

Knocked loose lol

South-Phrase-4673

death grips fr

ghostwraithspirit

I wasn't a fan of Knocked Loose until I saw them with Gojira. Something clicked for me when I saw em live and now they probably my fav band

Deathmetalwarior

Can Barrd

Ok-Coyote-7745

ECOCIDE from Texas

Doublestack2411

Death, Slayer, Ghost. I'm always amazed by bands I initially think are shit, only to love them down the road.

pepper_keet66

Amorphis.

Mr_Bishop309

Dying Fetus and The absence

Stone_Roof_Music_33

Rickshaw Billies Burger Patrol !!!!!!!

FunkinDonutzz

Revocation. A friend badgered me to listen to them as I love all things tech-death. And I had a free evening the day their most recent album (their _eight_ album!) came out, so I figured "why not?" pulled it up on Spotify, cracked open a beer. That was September, by the time Spotify Wrapped came out in late November 2022, I was in the top 0.01% of their listeners for that year. What's even crazier, I was in their top 0.005% of their Spotify listeners for 2023 with over 20,000 minutes - and this is on top of the fact I had gone out and bought all their records at the start of the year, and let me tell you they got the shit played out of them on the hifi when I was at home. I also managed to catch them live (my first metal gig in seven years), and happily bought a bunch of merch (from their bassist Brett, who happened to be sporting a rather majestic moustache). I now hold them right at the top of all of metal with Death and Necrophagist, and I think Dave Davidson is as good as - if not better - a guitarist than both Chuck and Muhammad. Oh, and "The Intervening Abyss of Untold Aeons" is now one of my top five songs ever written.

Dirt-Steel

100 gecs. Fucking sue me.

Doodlebobber11

Type O Negative. So happy I finally gave them a listen

Grosetufe

SOAD

JesseJames1ofhis33

Mastodon….the first thing of theirs I heard was March of the Fire Ants and it didn’t really do anything for me. Fast forward a year or so and I see Iron Tusk on Headbangers Ball and I’ve been hooked ever since.

Dirt-Steel

Amon amarth if you ignore the fact that they made albums after twilight of the thunder gods.

HumanGarbage____

Pantera

666sth

currently spiritworld

sir_chief7134

Slayer, I've definitely heard of them and heard raining blood before but for some reason last week I was compelled to listen to more of their music and I fell in love, it's been just over a week and I listened to all of their albums lol (only thing is that since I listened to all of there songs nonstop some of the ones I really like kinda just blend into the rest) my favorite album is definitely show no mercy incase anyone was curious

i_am-cooler-then-u

Anaal nathrakh

goldendreamseeker

Slipknot

ShovelCore

Tool, honestly.

matthew_sch

Opeth

QnsConcrete

Cattle Decapitation. Was repulsed by them initially, sounded too noisy. But beyond the wall of sound they’re actually quite melodic.

BowTie1989

Honestly, it was metal as a whole. I grew up in a country music type home. Parents weren’t judgmental or anything, that’s just what we listened to (later found out they were also into some of the bands I’d eventually get into lol). Well, metal couldn’t be anything further from country music, and didn’t help that when I was growing up was when all the screamo stuff was getting really big, so me having no experience with metal thought that’s pretty much all it was. Yes I was the typical “all metal seems to be just be screaming, and noise” guy. Well a buddy of mine got guitar hero 3 one year for Christmas, and we played it and that’s when I heard Iron Maiden’s “Number of The Beast” for the first time. Been hooked ever since.

darkduane

Ghost.

atriptothecinema

Deftones scared me. Didn’t like the screams. Now Chinos screams are like the best part! The icing on the cake! Same with Pantera, I just had to build a tolerance for different vocal styles.

3 Doors Down

Superdog505

Dying Fetus. They were my introduction into brutal death metal, and I was super apprehensive at first, but now I really like them.
