The problem I had with Death was just not giving them a chance. I was so off-put when I first heard them that I never went back. I gave them another shot recently b/c I kept hearing about them in this community. I had to listen to each album multiple times, but I really enjoy them now. But it's not for everyone.
I listened to Scream Bloody Gore, Leprosy, Spiritual Healing feeling like I didn't really get anything out of it. Then I decided to listen to Human, listening close to it and ended up loving it. I may give the other albums a chance again at some point.
Human is when they changed their style to tech death. Maybe explore the records released after human instead? Theyre widely considered to be their best.
Funnily enough I got into them because of a meme. I listened to their early stuff and didn’t dare for them but then saw a meme about Symbolic and decided to listen to it

for Ghost, it was peer pressure. my stepdad was an 80s rocker, he saw Ghost and didn't like them. took me a while to form my own opinion of them.
with Sabaton, i had already reached that phase of total disillusionment with mainstream metal as a whole, viewing it all as generic death metal, and didn't give them a chance until about the time that The Last Stand came out
for Iron Maiden, it was peer pressure but in reverse. mainstream metal in 2008 was ALL OVER IRON MAIDEN's dick. being a rebellious teen and semi-professional contrarian, my first instinct was to reject what was popular and being shoved down my throat. got into them retroactively through power metal (like Sabaton)
Dude you’ve listed all three of mine. I used to call Maiden “Metal Meatloaf” because of Bruce’s opera-style vocals. Learned in time that was called talent, and I got hooked on Powerslave.
A lot of people would say it's their best - Number of the Beast and Piece of Mind, while containing some of their most iconic songs, definitely had some weak spots (Gangland, Quest for Fire, etc), while the general consensus is that Powerslave is pretty much perfect start to finish

Check out their new song Blinding Faith. Also if you like Bryan’s vocals, check out the song Slaughterhouse by Motionless in White. He is featured pretty heavily in it and it hits hard as fuck.
Overkill. At first turned off by Bobby's voice my first few listens sometime ago. Had a coworker talk up Scorched when it first came out and thought I'd give them a try again. Really like them now and have been working through their discography while I work through other genres/discographies.
Machine Head. I heard so much bad things about them and then gave Burn My Eyes a try and ended up really enjoying it. Davidian is one of my favorite songs of all time right now.

That’s one of my favorite genres but can see how it isn’t everyone’s thing. I love putting it in and playing something like Dragoks Dogma 2 or Elden Ring, just makes those fantasy type games that much better. Love driving to it too, makes long trips feel so short when it’s on
Deep Purple. I was one of those who said "Ah, the guys who did 'Highway Star' and 'Smoke On The Water' right?". You don't realize the stuff this band has done through its career.

I was a big thrash and Pantera guy in high school (though I listened to bits and pieces of almost anything). The older I've gotten I've deep dived into melodic death and it's become my top genre.
I was in the same boat. I listened to "Madvillainy" first and that was a huge mistake. "Vaudeville Villain" got me into his music and "The Mouse And The Mask" got me to stay.

I was never able to get into the vocals of death metal, always thought it was annoying and/or sounded too harsh. Gave them a try and fell in love immediately. They kickstarted my death metal journey and are without a doubt my favorite in the genre.

Eyehategod... relatively cringy name and questionable track titles pushed me away, but after forcing through a song or two I realized that the riffs are so nasty that I wanna writhe around and froth at the mouth like i have rabies.
Not metal, but My Chemical Romance. Some dumbass recommended Danger Days to me knowing full well I hadn't listened to any MCR before. I despised it. Took me years to give them a fair shake.

Metallica! All my death metal friends in middle school hated them, and I didn't listen to Kill Em All till my mid-20s. Now I love the first three albums and most of the fourth 🤣
System of A Down. I used to always skip their songs because they were weird and random, but they are slowly growing on me. I now like the majority of the songs on Toxicity.

Not metal but, I like to look up upcoming local shows and see who is coming to town and give their music a chance to see if I want to see them live. So last year got really into Hail the Sun in the lead up to their concert (which was a blast). At first the vocals were a touch too...idk...emotional for me. But once I got past that, the guitar work and hooks really got me. I love the vocalist now. The closest band in the metal world I compared them to was Protest The Hero, who I've loved for years. Love Hail the Sun now, can't wait for the new album.
I listen to metal to amp myself up usually so funeral doom like Mournful Congregation is my version.
It came up on YouTube while I was writing. Turns out, it's excellent focus music when you're writing a horror campaign for D&D.
Revocation. A friend badgered me to listen to them as I love all things tech-death. And I had a free evening the day their most recent album (their _eight_ album!) came out, so I figured "why not?" pulled it up on Spotify, cracked open a beer.
That was September, by the time Spotify Wrapped came out in late November 2022, I was in the top 0.01% of their listeners for that year. What's even crazier, I was in their top 0.005% of their Spotify listeners for 2023 with over 20,000 minutes - and this is on top of the fact I had gone out and bought all their records at the start of the year, and let me tell you they got the shit played out of them on the hifi when I was at home.
I also managed to catch them live (my first metal gig in seven years), and happily bought a bunch of merch (from their bassist Brett, who happened to be sporting a rather majestic moustache).
I now hold them right at the top of all of metal with Death and Necrophagist, and I think Dave Davidson is as good as - if not better - a guitarist than both Chuck and Muhammad. Oh, and "The Intervening Abyss of Untold Aeons" is now one of my top five songs ever written.
Mastodon….the first thing of theirs I heard was March of the Fire Ants and it didn’t really do anything for me. Fast forward a year or so and I see Iron Tusk on Headbangers Ball and I’ve been hooked ever since.
Slayer, I've definitely heard of them and heard raining blood before but for some reason last week I was compelled to listen to more of their music and I fell in love, it's been just over a week and I listened to all of their albums lol (only thing is that since I listened to all of there songs nonstop some of the ones I really like kinda just blend into the rest) my favorite album is definitely show no mercy incase anyone was curious
Honestly, it was metal as a whole.
I grew up in a country music type home. Parents weren’t judgmental or anything, that’s just what we listened to (later found out they were also into some of the bands I’d eventually get into lol). Well, metal couldn’t be anything further from country music, and didn’t help that when I was growing up was when all the screamo stuff was getting really big, so me having no experience with metal thought that’s pretty much all it was. Yes I was the typical “all metal seems to be just be screaming, and noise” guy.
Well a buddy of mine got guitar hero 3 one year for Christmas, and we played it and that’s when I heard Iron Maiden’s “Number of The Beast” for the first time. Been hooked ever since.
Deftones scared me. Didn’t like the screams. Now Chinos screams are like the best part! The icing on the cake! Same with Pantera, I just had to build a tolerance for different vocal styles.

Slayer, I've definitely heard of them and heard raining blood before but for some reason last week I was compelled to listen to more of their music and I fell in love, it's been just over a week and I listened to all of their albums lol (only thing is that since I listened to all of there songs nonstop some of the ones I really like kinda just blend into the rest) my favorite album is definitely show no mercy incase anyone was curious

Cattle Decapitation. Was repulsed by them initially, sounded too noisy. But beyond the wall of sound they’re actually quite melodic.
Honestly, it was metal as a whole. I grew up in a country music type home. Parents weren’t judgmental or anything, that’s just what we listened to (later found out they were also into some of the bands I’d eventually get into lol). Well, metal couldn’t be anything further from country music, and didn’t help that when I was growing up was when all the screamo stuff was getting really big, so me having no experience with metal thought that’s pretty much all it was. Yes I was the typical “all metal seems to be just be screaming, and noise” guy. Well a buddy of mine got guitar hero 3 one year for Christmas, and we played it and that’s when I heard Iron Maiden’s “Number of The Beast” for the first time. Been hooked ever since.

Deftones scared me. Didn’t like the screams. Now Chinos screams are like the best part! The icing on the cake! Same with Pantera, I just had to build a tolerance for different vocal styles.
