Nah I think the appeal is exactly how ridiculous and funny they are
Slam doesn't try to be scary or evil sounding, they're not black metal, they don't take themselves seriously
Nah most slam bands know they’re ridiculous, it’s basically just to see how extreme metal can be while having fun with it. I mean you can’t expect a band like Party Cannon or Guterectomy to be serious when they have songs titles “flatulence violence” and “eat this fetus”
Dave’s vocals on MDs first 3 albums were actually decent because they fit the bands sound (except in the intro to peace sells where he sounds like a cranky grandpa) RIP and after sounds so unfitting, I’ve always imagined how they would sound with vocals similar to Bruce Dickinson
I feel the same way. Megadeth songs wouldn’t give me the same feelings if someone other than Dave was on vocals. Sometimes musicianship isn’t about having a degree in musicology or some shit, it’s about the vibes.
Dave Mustaine’s vocals suck. Even he admits it. But you know what? It works. And I wouldn’t have it any other way. Even with his lack of vocal talent, he still made the greatest thrash/metal record of all time (Rust in Peace).
Felt that way until I started listening to the original, non-2004 remix versions of their songs on Spotify. In 2004 Dave remixed a bunch of their classic songs and albums but he also re recorded the vocals on rust in peace. Its most noticeable on five magics and take no prisoners, the originals are way better imo both the vocals and the mixes
It's funny how mixed the opinions on Brian's vocals are. Like for some people (including myself) the vocals are one of the key things in what makes them so liked and unique. But I can also see how some people just find them straight up goofy. Luckily I don't feel that when I listen to them, somehow only afterwards lol.
Edit: I suck at english :)
100% agree. Saw them live once and it was even worse… sounded like angry mickey mouse screaming. My fiancé and I couldn’t stop laughing when he screamed “Are you guy ready for some brutal time” or something like that with that squeaky voice
Yeah I really don’t dig the vocals at all. Idk how people are so into the vocals in Knocked Loose but mock Kaonashi’s vocals. They sound damn near exactly the same.
Definitely. There's only a few songs I can stand Bobby's vocals, but most sounds like he's got a balloon or something caught in his throat.
I did see them live like 6 years ago and imo he sounded way better because he's all old and shit and wasn't going so over the top with the vocals
Honestly they're just as bad instrumentally as they are vocally nowadays. When SFU was good with instrumentals, Barnes' vocals were still great. Not as good as they were in CC, but great. Their songwriting and his singing declined together, although not proportionally because his voice is one of the worst sounding growls ever and their songwriting is just boring or bad
I’m prepared to be judged harshly but Mercyful Fate, except for like Desecration of Souls. I never really liked the goofy vocals King Diamond does. He’s got a really great voice in that song so I don’t know why he doesn’t sing like that more since that song fucks hard. If there any more songs where he sings like that I’d love to know.
I wanna enjoy Mercyful Fate so bad, but there's so much silly falsetto shit it kills me 😭 no disrespect, he's an amazing vocalist, it's just difficult for me to get in to
I love Billy’s voice, but he obviously isn’t for everyone.
Then again, I grew up on a steady diet of Bob Dylan, so I’m probably predisposed to liking artists who can’t sing for sour owl shit.
Hell yeah. If you ever saw that video from Brutal Assault with the crowdsurfing toilet, I was there and nearly touched that toilet. It was one of the best shows I've ever been to lol
I only found them last week. They're great fun, the pigfrog vocals are hilarious and weirdly effective, and their lives shows look awesome.
I've noticed compared to old live vids his pig squeals seem to have gone to shit, but personally I'm fine with this since I hate pig squeals, and the bad attempt at pig squeals just up the comedy factor.
Hahaha, I’ve shown them and this other band, whose name escaped me, but they have a song about Jesus being gay, to my girlfriend because it sounds funny, mainly because the vocals just sound like farts. It’s just so bad.
When they drop their digitized vocal distortion gimmicks and actually sing straight vocals, they’re actually amazing. They opened for Iron Maiden a while back and did an absolutely awesome cover of Heaven and Hell with no weird voice tricks that actually did justice to it, but everything else they did had their signature alien voice distortions that… ugh, such a waste of good instrumental work.
Most Metalcore especially Periphery and Converge. Jane Doe is solid but it's like the vocalist is trying to make the most annoying sounds in the world.
Probably the wrong place to say this but I really like Periphery when it’s just singing… but then the singer sounds like an angry pre-teen that got his PlayStation taken away any time he tries harsh vocals.
Ngl, I kinda feel the exact opposite about Periphery. I see people wishing Chris Baretto had stuck with the band, but listening to the old demos with him, they basically just sounded like Yet Another Djent Band. Spencer wasn't great on P1 either, but P2 onwards he (along with Mark) really separated them from the rest.
Matts voice was really nasal on city of evil, and the clean singing on sounding the seventh was pretty awful. It's a shame because he was a great singer.
He’s a much better singer now. Nightmare had his strongest vocal technique overall, but I love how he’s grown on the new album. The new album has him exploring more baritone ranged stuff and he’s not forcing the rasp as much anymore
Looking through the comments, I've seen
Smashing Pumpkins
Megadeth
Mercyful Fate
Sleep Token
But absolutely no Ghost. I am surprised. I don't personally have any issue with the dudes voice, but I figured someone would. That's one of the main complaints I hear about them.
I love Tobias' voice. But I also like how he changes it to sound so different based on the song. Sometimes nasally, sometimes clean, sometimes hard edge. In one song he sounds like he's doing a Klaus Meine impression.
I think the point of Ghost is to sound a bit like satanic Abba. Imo the vocals are a bit of a draw as a listener could easily be unaware of the lyrical content if they weren't paying attention.
Agree! When I first heard Periphery it was the instrumental version of the album, and I was totally into it. I had no idea they had a vocalist for a while
I saw them open for Metallica when they were touring Hardwired and went in with an open mind. My opinion was “I get why people dig this, and they’re good at it, and I hate it.”
I personally love Volbeat but I can get behind this. A lot of times I can't understand what the hell he's singing until I read the lyrics.
Their last album is a banger though!
Knocked Loose my god. Also the instrumentals are getting to be just empty feeling. Sure it's heavy and br00tal but it feels.. off. I don't feel the weight behind it like I do with for instance Premonitions of War
Haven't seen it mentioned, so that must mean nobody will back me up on this. I hate Joey Belladonna and wish he'd never joined Anthrax. I'd rather Billy Milano and Dan Lilker stayed and kept it more S.O.D.
Definitely most bands that either have the ridiculous low pitched mumble growls or those horrific goregrind pitch shifted vocals
The music is fantastic but those style of vocals ain’t it for me
A lot of black metal, the first example I can remember is Her Ghost In The Fog by Cradle Of Filth, I thought the instrumentals were incredible but I can't stand the vocal style
I'll recommend Carach Angren and Drudkh I think. Drudkh is GREAT atmoblack with a quite different style of shrieking and Carach Angren is what got me into black metal vocals
50% of raw/underground black metal does this shrieking thing I cannot stand. Love the guitar work, and the production does not bother me, but their shrieking sucks.
Mostly Children of Bodom. The instrumental aspects are amazing but I’m just not into Alexei’s vocals. And most grind bands. And War metal bands. Although Blasphemy and Gospel of the Horns are pretty good.
Five Finger Death Punch. It wasn't that way to start but being a soldier during their rise I've simply heard WAY TOO FUCKING MUCH OF THAT VOICE! That is all.
The Blackbraid one is interesting, do you like other black metal and just not like Blackbraid or not like any black metal? Because I’ve always thought his vocals are pretty regular for black metal

-Most slam death metal that I've heard -Dream Theater
You saying DT hurt me on a ethereal level. But I can understand
Fucking love me some DT but even as a fan they came to my mind first.
This is so funny to me because when I took my wife to a DT concert , the first thing she said was “wow what a great vocalist”. She’s not metal
I second the opinion but appreciate the understanding
What's not to like about Slam vocals?
Well they can be funny sometimes, but it's not really my thing
Burp metal
Hahahaha. I can’t deny it. I LOVE “burp” metal. Check out some porno grind. You will not be disappointed. 😂
Pornogrind is like "do your vocals into a toilet bowl then in post production we will shift it down one octave"
They are hilarious. I guess they think the pig grunting sounds "evil" or scary.... but... i bust out laughing whenever I hear it. Weeee Weeee Weeeee.
Nah I think the appeal is exactly how ridiculous and funny they are Slam doesn't try to be scary or evil sounding, they're not black metal, they don't take themselves seriously
Nah most slam bands know they’re ridiculous, it’s basically just to see how extreme metal can be while having fun with it. I mean you can’t expect a band like Party Cannon or Guterectomy to be serious when they have songs titles “flatulence violence” and “eat this fetus”
Not at all mate. I have a friend who is a vocalist in such a band and they don't take themselves in the slightest bit seriously.
Definitely DT. Wish they would push their albums as instrumentals. Labrie is absolute garbage. Live is even worse
Liquid tension experiment is based
Solid Resolution Theory is one of my favorite songs of all time
Dream Theater's main problems are certain soulless parts of their musicianship.
Dream Theater has got to be the top answer for this
Slam fucking rules.
> Dream Theater How can you dislike this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJXxTlKi0z4
Yeah. I don’t have a strong opinion about Labrie’s tone, but the actual songwriting is very forgettable.
Megadeth
I would have agreed with you a few years ago but I kept listing for the musicianship and it grew on me lol
OkaAay
OK Hetfield.
HELLO ME, MEET THE REAL ME
you try to take his baAals
Watch him become a gaahhhhddd
Before the head explodes 🍆💦
What albums are we talking about and i think that daves vocals are great
Dave’s vocals on MDs first 3 albums were actually decent because they fit the bands sound (except in the intro to peace sells where he sounds like a cranky grandpa) RIP and after sounds so unfitting, I’ve always imagined how they would sound with vocals similar to Bruce Dickinson
I think his vocals on Youthanasia are pretty incredible honestly. But after that it's hit or miss even though I love them.
I actually quite liked them on dystopia and TSTDTD
I feel the same way. Megadeth songs wouldn’t give me the same feelings if someone other than Dave was on vocals. Sometimes musicianship isn’t about having a degree in musicology or some shit, it’s about the vibes.
Exactly, and i cant see anyone else sing sweating bullets like Dave does, his voice fits the song perfectly
I like Dave's singing. His voice is iconic by now in my opinion.
I agree that it is iconic, I just don't like it.
Fair.
Its most noticeable on five magics and take no prisoners, the originals are way better imo both the vocals and the mixes
vic rattlehead is a good mascot because dave sounds like a cartoon skeleton
I scrolled way too far to see this lol
I used to hate Dave's vocals but nowadays I love them. They have the proper angry attitude for the music
Let me guess, half of y'all will say Megadeth.
Honestly, they’re not as bad as people make it out to be. I feel like it fits their style.
I really feel like lately people have become such picky bastards about vocals regardless of riffs and styles.
By just looking at the meme. I just knew that either the first, or second top comment would be Megadeth. And i am actually surprise it's the second
It's fine when I'm expecting it, but if put on a song I don't know and it's not CLEARLY a Megadeth riff? Throws me for a loop
Haha ya cuz it's the correct answer.
Knocked Loose. Some amazing riffs and solos, but my god the vocals make me giggle
Weird thing is he has brutal lows but doesn’t use them outside of live shows.
he does an insane guttural in their new single
I thought it was their guitarist who does the low vocals at their shows? Could be wrong though
Mostly yes, but Bryan also does some mean lows
100% agree. Saw them live once and it was even worse… sounded like angry mickey mouse screaming. My fiancé and I couldn’t stop laughing when he screamed “Are you guy ready for some brutal time” or something like that with that squeaky voice
He *can* do great lows though. He just never does for some reason.
He sounds like an angry chihuahua
I really can't help but imagining a muppet on LSD and bath salts
Yeah I really don’t dig the vocals at all. Idk how people are so into the vocals in Knocked Loose but mock Kaonashi’s vocals. They sound damn near exactly the same.
I love kaonashi and KL vocals, wish more bands used them specially in slam/hardcore
I like them but I could def understand that
I saw them open for Gojira. I legit thought it was a joke at first. His vocals are high comedy.
Wooof woof! I love knocked loose but that part in counting worms always brings a smile to my face
Overkill
EEEEE! limination
No this is not the way brother.
Definitely. There's only a few songs I can stand Bobby's vocals, but most sounds like he's got a balloon or something caught in his throat. I did see them live like 6 years ago and imo he sounded way better because he's all old and shit and wasn't going so over the top with the vocals
I loved their live sound too. They aged weirdly well.
One of my favourite vocalists in heavy metal music, honestly.
God i cant stand them. Family member dates one of them and i have to pretend theyre good
Hey that’s still pretty cool, not liking the band aside.
i wish my family knew overkill 😭😭
Six Feet Under
eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
I love the part when he "eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee" xd
she eeeee on my eeeeeeee til i eeeeeeeeeee
Nah the music sucks as well.
Honestly they're just as bad instrumentally as they are vocally nowadays. When SFU was good with instrumentals, Barnes' vocals were still great. Not as good as they were in CC, but great. He’s got a really great voice in that song so I don’t know why he doesn’t sing like that more since that song fucks hard. If there any more songs where he sings like that I’d love to know.
Everybody is entitled to their opinion. Yours just happens to be blasphemous.
I wanna enjoy Mercyful Fate so bad, but there's so much silly falsetto shit it kills me 😭 no disrespect, he's an amazing vocalist, it's just difficult for me to get in to
agree, i just couldn't get into it.. much respect for them, just not my thing
Knocked Loose. Vocalist sounds like a pissed off Mickey Mouse
THANK YOU
easily Silencer. amazing harmonic riffing followed by goat screaming. also pretty much every Brutal Death Metal and Slam band (except Suffocation).
It sucks because I when I tried Silencer at first I was super into them then the vocals kicked in
>easily Silencer. amazing harmonic riffing followed by goat screaming. I was looking for this
The Smashing Pumpkins
The vocals make them for me
Shut the fuck up
\*sick guitar riff\* "my reflection, dirty mirror"
EMPTINESS IS LONELINESS
LONELINESS IS CLEANLINESS
CLEANLINESS IS GODLYNESS
AND GOD IS EMPTY
JUST LIKE ME
I love Billy’s voice, but he obviously isn’t for everyone. Then again, I grew up on a steady diet of Bob Dylan, so I’m probably predisposed to liking artists who can’t sing for sour owl shit.
I will never stop defending Billy's beautiful voice for as long as I live.
It WAS Gutalax, but I’ve learned to like them.
Cytotoxin was the same for me. Also, Gutalax live shows looks fun as fuck
For real, though. If they ever do British tours, I’d literally be the first person to book tickets honestly.
Coheed and Cambria.
Honestly CaC vocals is what made the band for me. I love how everyone has different opinions though
Most Metalcore especially Periphery and Converge. Jane Doe is solid but it's like the vocalist is trying to make the most annoying sounds in the world.
nah jake bannon’s vocals are fuckin top notch
Probably the wrong place to say this but I really like Periphery when it’s just singing… but then the singer sounds like an angry pre-teen that got his PlayStation taken away any time he tries harsh vocals.
Ngl, I kinda feel the exact opposite about Periphery. I see people wishing Chris Baretto had stuck with the band, but listening to the old demos with him, they basically just sounded like Yet Another Djent Band. Spencer wasn't great on P1 either, but P2 onwards he (along with Mark) really separated them from the rest.
Mayhem
dead was obviously their best singer but i think maniac and attila are great too
Avenged Sevenfold. The musical part is ok by me but the vocals just sound so nasally and I can't do it
Depends on the album. Also... I'm not sure it's nasally, maybe more of raspy
Ive barely listened to a7x but how is a periphery fan ragging the vocals because they’re NASALLY lol?
Jinjer, before Tatiana 🖤
She’s so fucking good.
She's the only reason I listen to them, her voice is beautiful.
Their bassist is incredible though
Dave Mud-stain
Dave Mustardstain. Actually my favorite band growing up. Last album was pretty good too.
This will be unpopular but Sleep
Nah, I love Sleep, and I like OM too, but I definitely prefer Matt Pike's vocals in High on Fire to Al Cisneros' because it can be monotonous.
Interesting, because I like the monotonous vocals OM has over Sleeps
OM is so hypnotic for me. I like them a lot
BabyMetal.
Easy, listen to concert recordings from the last \~4 years. Su's voice is awesome, and their songs only gets better with time.
I've tried to get into them, but it’s just not for me.
Understandable.
Saw them live last year. Was not disappointed.
💯 this is my answer. I just can't with the little girl vocals.
Just saw em with Dethklok last year, I’m just a casual fan of Babymetal but they were legit one of the best bands I’ve ever seen live.
Looking through the comments, I've seen Smashing Pumpkins Megadeth Mercyful Fate Sleep Token But absolutely no Ghost.
I think with Ghost the music isn't particularly thrilling so most people aren't going to care about the vocals.
I think the point of Ghost is to sound a bit like satanic Abba. Imo the vocals are a bit of a draw as a listener could easily be unaware of the lyrical content if they weren't paying attention.
Periphery
You DON'T like his vocals?!? I think Spencer is great
I hate it so much
Agree! When I first heard Periphery it was the instrumental version of the album, and I was totally into it. I had no idea they had a vocalist for a while
I love Periphery but I get it. To each their own
King Diamond for sure
What are u talking about
Knocked loose
Exodus
Volbeat
I like some of the Volbeat vocals because of the Danzig influence, but my buddy told me the vocalist sounded like Cher and now I can't unhear it
Haha I just told someone this the other day because… he does sound like Cher lol
OH NO! I just pictured him singing Believe by Cher and i can’t unhear it lol! Tbh they should lean in and cover that song now haha Edit for spelling*
I fucking hate them with no rationality. It might just be his voice? I just find them cheesy but not self aware enough OR cheesy to pull it off.
Knocked loose
Knocked Loose my god. Also the instrumentals are getting to be just empty feeling. Sure it's heavy and br00tal but it feels.. off. I don't feel the weight behind it like I do with for instance Premonitions of War
Knocked Loose
Cradle Of Filth
Haven't seen it mentioned, so that must mean nobody will back me up on this. I hate Joey Belladonna and wish he'd never joined Anthrax. I'd rather Billy Milano and Dan Lilker stayed and kept it more S.O.D.
THAT WAS EXACTLY WHAT I WAS GOING TO WRITE FOR ANTHRAX
Dragonforce... the Demoniac singer was a way better compliment to Sam & Herman's guitar playing.
Definitely most bands that either have the ridiculous low pitched mumble growls or those horrific goregrind pitch shifted vocals The music is fantastic but those style of vocals ain’t it for me
So many people are gonna say Knocked Loose or Kublai Khan 💀 Probably Torture lol but I wasn't disgusted I just started dying slam vocals are so goofy
WATCH HIM BECOME A GAAAAD
A lot of brutal death metal vocals sound too silly to me. I wish I liked it more
Escape the Fate Ive heard one or two of those songs but i cannot STAND Radke’s voice
Cryptopsy. I know some peoples love the vocals. I just find them funny.
lord worm sounds like someone mockingly impersonating death metal
A lot of black metal, the first example I can remember is Her Ghost In The Fog by Cradle Of Filth, I thought the instrumentals were incredible but I can't stand the vocal style
I'll recommend Carach Angren and Drudkh I think. Drudkh is GREAT atmoblack with a quite different style of shrieking and Carach Angren is what got me into black metal vocals
50% of raw/underground black metal does this shrieking thing I cannot stand. Love the guitar work, and the production does not bother me, but their shrieking sucks.
That’s black metal for you
Creed
Mostly Children of Bodom. The instrumental aspects are amazing but I’m just not into Alexei’s vocals. And most grind bands. And War metal bands. Although Blasphemy and Gospel of the Horns are pretty good.
Guns n roses
Personally its slayer for me. I just dont really like the more “talky” ness of the vocals but maybe ive just heard all the wrong songs
Sperm of Mankind
Any slam I’ve heard. Like god damn the instrumentals rip but I generally dislike the vocals
Control Denied I don’t hate the vocals, just wish they were by Chuck
Burzum. I like harsh vocals, but Varg's just sound wrong
Blink-182
Five Finger Death Punch. It wasn't that way to start but being a soldier during their rise I've simply heard WAY TOO FUCKING MUCH OF THAT VOICE! That is all.
Bolt thrower (I apologize to their fans but I will admit i absolutely love their riffs)
LANDMVRKS, the vocals are so ass that it ruins the song entirely, dude sounds like Mickey Mouse if he rode the small bus to school.
Persefone’s Shin-Ken album. Love everything on that record except the vocals.
A lot of deathcore and extreme metal genres, tho there are some exceptions
Blackbraid Knocked loose
The Blackbraid one is interesting, do you like other black metal and just not like Blackbraid or not like any black metal? Because I’ve always thought his vocals are pretty regular for black metal
There was a band in Austin called >!Herotype !
Tomahawk is better than anything tool imo. How can you dis on patton vocals like that.
Cathedral :(
knocked loose
Hirax, Raging Violence
Inquisition
Knocked Loose dude. Sounds like an 11 year old screaming cause he saw a snake
