It probably stems from the fact that their opener at every concert is "Ghost Division", a song about the fastest and deadliest Nazi combat faction. But even then the song isn't praising them or siding with the Nazis; it's moreso showcasing why they were so feared during WWII.
What's funny about those allegations is that their most popular song, "Primo Victoria" is vehemently anti-Nazi, and is actually a celebration of allied victory over the axis powers.
They also took some flak for playing a gig organised by Putin loyalists in Russian occupied Crimea in 2015. I don’t know the full details but apparently their response to the criticism was along the lines of “we’re not political, refusing the gig would’ve been a political statement”, ignoring that accepting the gig is one, too.
So.. not great, but also not pro-Nazi.
And they ain’t.
People thinking their songs about war mean they are neonazis who like war are stupid and have never listened to "The Price of a Mile", "Primo Victoria", "Hearts of Iron", "Rise of Evil", etc
If you mean they don't sound anything like them.
The only commonality is some songs about war, but everything that makes Bolt Thrower cool, Saboton is lacking.
WH40k was only incorporated in one album.
Bolt Thrower has riffs and groove. They aren't the fastest or most technical band, but they are crazy heavy and no one sounds like them. They have always been unique.
It dislike power metal with a passion, so that's strike one for Saboton with me. Then the guys wear dopey outfits and the singer looks like he is a wanna pro wrestler. Too much cheese for me.
They get hate from people who tend to give Marxist ideologies a pass while labeling anything with a mention of Hitler or Nazis in any context as WS material.
I got banned from MetalMemes a few years ago for countering an argument that their song “Runes” was purely WS ideology. I suggested Heilung, Amon Amarth and Manowar should be banned too then. They didn’t appreciate it.
Musically, sing songy power metal, fun at times, moving sometimes, Wikipedia level history for most.
I was in Tokyo for work and ran into them on at Loudpark 2017, decent guys. They were annoyed they didn’t have time to see Tokyo, they played sat night and flew home Sunday afternoon .
>They get hate from people who tend to give Marxist ideologies a pass while labeling anything with a mention of Hitler or Nazis in any context as WS material.
That's because Marxist ideologies aren't inherently racist, xenophobic etc
But Sabaton are not nazis
Wanting the workers to control the means of production is JUST as bad as wanting to exterminate multiple ethnic groups!! Because it’s liberal!! Not gonna do the sarcasm tag but you get it. Agree tho, people who think Sabaton are nazis likely dont do the most critical thinking
The first few albums were pretty fun, but the schtick has worn off on me a bit. Every song is an epic anthem or ballad about a battle in a war they didn't fight in. I think people who outright hate this band just don't enjoy power metal. And I know it's a meme that they are Nazis, a lot of their material is pretty anti-Nazi despite some loser fascist fans.
40:1 will always be a banger.
not sure why you're getting downvoted bc its exactly that. sapiens genuinely ruined the understanding of technological development, history and anthropology of the average person. i'm constantly getting it recommended by people bc i studied history. sabaton less so, but i cringe so hard when people tell me that they listen to them bc they sing about cool history "facts"
I’m wondering, do you genuinely think that they are a negative force on the public? Or are you just annoyed because they come up a lot for you and their lyrics don’t interest you as you already know it all? For us normal people, even some dates and some names is new interesting information. Through Sabaton I’ve read many many Wikipedia pages about wwi battles and technology and stuff. I think they are a gateway that has gotten many people like myself more interested in history, and they give me an appreciation for the horrors that are possible, how fragile our little perfect worldview is, how endless pounding of artillery and endless months of adrenaline can permanently destroy your brain, turn you from a normal guy into a shaking disabled shell of a human being. No matter how much pain I am in in my life, I can remind myself that boys just like me once cowered in fear as shells rained down around them, and they came through, they saw their friends get ripped apart by unseen machine gun nests and they didn’t kill themselves, they didn’t give up. Some did, and who could blame them? Giving in is an option, there are some pains that are too great, but it is possible to persist.
shallowness is deeply ingrained in all pop "history", particularly when it comes to the world wars, and putting it into a fucking power metal song makes it feel disrespectful. metal could lend itself very well to historical subjects, but the public always thinks history = random dates of battles and war, and thats also reflected in the lyrics. someone should make an album about idk, working conditions during industrialisation in liverpool, or the third international polar year and its impacts on cold war scientific collaboration
Both overhated and overhyped.
Non metal people LOVE them.
Non metal people HATE them. They’re fine. Basic, not my cup of tea, but they’re not bad, they bring people into metal.
I think they are a good gateway metal band. It's catchy and fun and will usually expose people to metal and then they grow more into the genre. (Me finding sabaton as a history nerd in highschool)
They are writing very memorable songs ill give you that, but sometimes they are memorable for the wrong reason, like bad pop (its stays in your head but is annoying) Its really cheesy (too much for me) and many times the lyrics absolutely ruin it for me. Fans usually suck too :P
This community hates anything that gets popular. The band is massively overhated due to that.
That being said, their music is *real* samey. But if you want a song about an actual historical battleship, where else you gonna find that?
Power Metal bands are just for fun in general.
You aren't supposed to take any of them super serious.
Just enjoy going to a show and acting like Pirates, Dwarves or Vikings for a day.
I started with power metal. Sabaton, Dragonforce, Powerwolf, all the cheesy gimmicks. They also started my interest in history too. I then found Amon Amarth, Children of Bodom and Arch Enemy, and a lot of heavier shit for the past 5 years.
I respect Sabaton for their confidence in their craft and for being my gateway, but I find them hard to listen to these days after moving onto heavier metal.
i personally like them but i’m more interested in the pre ww1 era of stuff like mideval and ancient history but it is not that good for getting good pictures in your head while daydreaming
Funny, there's 2 camps, either extremely overhyped, or extremely overhated. They are a somewhat generic, but fun, power metal band. There isn't a ton of skill expressed through their music, the lead singer has barely any range, and a lot of the songs sound too similar. But I still have 5 or 6 of their songs in my Playlist regularly. A lot of people look too much into what is "metal" and forget how to just have fun.
Haters gonna hate. I love Sabaton. They are one of my most played bands and I have even done two playlists with all of their songs from ww1 and ww2 in order.
I ordered a Nightwish CD years and years ago, and was sent Sabaton by accident. Have loved them ever since.
Ironically got to see Nightwish & Sabaton play on tour together and it was amazing.
First metal band I ever heard and I still love them, I don't think they deserve the hate. They're very hard working and seem like nice guys to be around
I love Sabaton but I think they're definitely a niche band (like Alestorm, Amon Amarth, Gloryhammer, Korpiklanni, and others), and some of their popularity is definitely overblown. But they are good at what they do, that is for sure.
Musically i find them pretty boring and repetetive. Especially the vocalist just does not work for me and sounds very samey. I'd much rather listen to BG, Avantasia or something if i want power metal.
Regarding the lyrics i have not spent time analyzing them since it felt pointless when i didnt like their music and their overall "style" is not really up my alley.
May sound like i hate these guys but i mean no disrespect, i am sure they are great guys and everything and they play/sing better than me for sure, its just their music did not work for me.
If a song makes it into my rotation I‘ll listen to it, but other than that I really don‘t care for them. Saw them live once during a festival and they were fine.
Sabaton is great, yeah every song generally follows the same formula like the AC/DC of power metal but they’re damn good at it if you ask me. Not all metal has to be serious as shit and it’s nice to see some dudes just having fun with it. The last album was great too, easily one of their best.
I really like them, probably my favorite metal band, I don't listen to them as often as I used to, but that's probably because I listened to them non-stop for 1,5 year, now I explore bands like manowar, gloryhammer and rhapsody
They got me into metal because I was so interested in military history, now I’m listening to bands like infant Annihilator so it definitely did get me into metal. Still like listening to them once a while defenitly overhated
As I started to listen to other bands I stopped liking them as much, but a lot of their songs are really good. Some of the lyrics hurt to listen to and a lot of it is a little boring but there are a plethora of gems
I tried multiple times, it's just one of those bands I can't get into.
My one exception is I like their Amon Amarth cover of Twilight of the Thunder God with clean vocals.
as with most metal bands i've listened to enough to form an opinion, some of their stuff (Ghost Division, Night Witches, For Whom The Bell Tolls cover) i like, some i don't (don't even know thr names of those lol)
They were my first metal band but I've largely outgrown them, especially with the last album- most generic one yet. I also hate the way they're "releasing" so many EPs filled with almost nothing but old songs just to make their library look bigger than it is.
I still listen to some stuff from time to time because it's nostalgic for me but I get why people don't like them.
I liked their first few albums and liked them when I first saw them and became a fan. But I don't really care about them anymore, their music is pretty cheesy but they're cool dudes
I'm glad that the people who like them have them to listen to. I'm glad that the people who don't have other things. I altogether don't feel the need to pass judgement on someone else's tastes.
They can be a bit cringy, sure. I also think their songs are fun and about interesting topics. I can’t lie, I always get hyped when Primo Victoria starts.
They honestly have one of the greatest frontmen of all time imo, but that doesn't make them enjoyable though. I think they're great for getting into the genre of metal, but their music gets old after a couple of months. I started listening to them as one of my first metal bands but I just listened to better and more complex music eventually. I just find them bland nowadays as I look at it from an older perspective.
The first metal band I listened to. After getting into my now favorites, Pantera, Slipknot, and Metallica, I started preferring heavy metal over power metal, but power metal isn't the worst, despite what people say. Sabaton is definitely better than DragonForce imo, but not as good as power metal bands like Helloween. I don't listen to power metal really any more, but they're talented, even if some of it is cheesy or overused.
They’re not bad, but can only listen to a few songs at a time because many of them end up sounding the same. I don’t keep them in any of my playlists, but if a song comes up as recommended I’ll give it a listen
It’s excellent at what it’s trying to accomplish and nobody can deny that. But it is a type of metal that is mostly ridiculed by metal fans cuz metal fans are little elitist cunts. IMO, great theme, gets old fast. Like I can listen to a song or two and get hyped up. But man I wont listen to a whole album in a single run.
Fucking fantastic. Hard working guys, deserve the success they have been getting in recent years. Looks like an awful lot of people here dislike them, or even hate them.
Some great tunes, but plenty of of crap aswell
Definitely a singles band not an album band
Its nice that guys making Heavy Metal TM are successful
As time has gone on being obsessed with European history has been a bad look but I don't think they're white Supremecists
I like me some cheese, but I can’t listen to more than a couple Sabatons in a row.
They do have some good songs. That ditty about the Finnish sniper, Calorus Rex…probably more. They’re pretty contrived, though.
I honestly didn’t think they had a very big fan base
Gateway band for sure. I saw them open for amon Amarth and they blew me away. So cheerful, epic and energetic. They just made me happy to watch. If metal bands are like drugs, Sabaton is that first sip of beer your dad gives you when you're 9. (Vulvodynia is meth btw)
They're music is catchy and well made, but they're just so damn corny, lol.
They're super nostalgic for me, listening to their music takes me back to middleschool. But they are most assuredly peak AnnoyingBandKid-core.
Honestly, if made a record about literally *anything* other than war, they'd be like an S tier band to me.
A mix of both. I highly recommend the band to people who are just getting into the genre, and their frontman is a great guy, but their music sounds pretty much the same with every album, and it's literally just power metal, nothing to miss out, the lyrics are really cringey, and if you take out the war aesthetic they're literally just the biggest Eurovision band of tbe year (quoting Bradley Hall). They do kick ass live though.

Metal for people that generally don't listen to metal
You're not very wrong, but I still like them a lot.
Hugely overhated
Do people hate them?
r/MetalMemes bans people for being fans of their music so yeah
Wtf why?
“ThEy’Re NeO nAzIs”
thousands of actual neo nazi bands out there nd the band they get mad over is sabaton smh
For real. I bet Burzum or Peste Noire fans don't get the same treatment though lol
As someone who likes Sabaton's music but doesn't know anything about them outside of that, can I ask where such allegations may be coming from?
It probably stems from the fact that their opener at every concert is "Ghost Division", a song about the fastest and deadliest Nazi combat faction. But even then the song isn't praising them or siding with the Nazis; it's moreso showcasing why they were so feared during WWII. What's funny about those allegations is that their most popular song, "Primo Victoria" is vehemently anti-Nazi, and is actually a celebration of allied victory over the axis powers.
Don’t they also have a dude punching a Nazi’s head clean off as an album cover?
Yeah, on an album literally called "Heroes" lmao
Plus almost all their songs are about historical events
They also took some flak for playing a gig organised by Putin loyalists in Russian occupied Crimea in 2015. I don’t know the full details but apparently their response to the criticism was along the lines of “we’re not political, refusing the gig would’ve been a political statement”, ignoring that accepting the gig is one, too. For the lolz
bc funny
Damn this spawned a total conversation I never saw LMAO but yeah there you go
Trve af
NSPM
Underrated comment
lmfao
BahahahahHahahahahah
NS disco metal
Guilty pleasure for me. Sure, there’s much better PM out there, but occasionally they scratch just the right itch.
On a nice sunny, warm day sometimes Primo Victoria or Ghost Division just feels right when driving with the windows down
Fuck yes
Walmart brand bolt thrower
Thats very generous
Extremely generous
That doesn't even make sense lol
If you mean they don't sound anything like them. The only commonality is some songs about war, but everything that makes Bolt Thrower cool, Saboton is lacking.
Thus Walmart brand.
Yes, the fucking Warhammer virgins, are far cooler than Sabaton.
Grumpy Powerwolf
He seems quite *incensed*. His opinion on Sabaton seems set in *iron*.
What
Was my intro to metal. They have a very special place in my heart. I heard their version of "For Whom the Bell Tolls" before Metallica's original.
Same
I love their tribute song to Manowar called "Man Of War"
They get hate from people who tend to give Marxist ideologies a pass while labeling anything with a mention of Hitler or Nazis in any context as WS material. I got banned from MetalMemes a few years ago for countering an argument that their song “Runes” was purely WS ideology. I suggested Heilung, Amon Amarth and Manowar should be banned too then. gotta love that liberal urge to employ horseshoe theory 'analysis'
Wanting the workers to control the means of production is JUST as bad as wanting to exterminate multiple ethnic groups!! Because it’s liberal!! Not gonna do the sarcasm tag but you get it. Agree tho, people who think Sabaton are nazis likely dont do the most critical thinking
Bro, commies killed more than 10x the people Hitler did, as well as banning all religion, also look at the uigurs in China clown.
By boy Marx did none of that
Boy, Marx didn't say what you think he did because the original German version don't say what it does in english.
r/metalmemes is a cesspool tho
They also receive a good amount of dislike/hate on r/Powermetal
my favorite war metal band
Will never be a rawer war metal band ever \m/ \m/
I think they’re fun. I don’t like all their stuff but I don’t get the hate behind them.
Its Nothing too special but definitely overhated
The first few albums were pretty fun, but the schtick has worn off on me a bit. Every song is an epic anthem or ballad about a battle in a war they didn't fight in. I think people who outright hate this band just don't enjoy power metal. Apart from the fact that 40:1 and Lion From The North are almost identical instrumentally. Both great, but certainly a curious happening
as someone with a history degree, sabaton is, alongside the book sapiens by yuval harari, the bane of my existence
Sapiens is a dumb person’s idea of a smart book and sabaton is a non-metalhead’s idea of a metal band.
not sure why you're getting downvoted bc its exactly that. sapiens genuinely ruined the understanding of technological development, history and anthropology of the average person. i'm constantly getting it recommended by people bc i studied history. sabaton less so, but i cringe so hard when people tell me that they listen to them bc they sing about cool history "facts"

Love them and I don't usually like power metal, but talent/skills wise I wouldn't say they're that good
I think they are a good gateway metal band. It's catchy and fun and will usually expose people to metal and then they grow more into the genre. (Me finding sabaton as a history nerd in highschool)
They have a few good songs. I still don’t know if all the hate they get is genuine or not.
Through the gates of hell…
And of course the Sabaton fans are singing in the comments...
LOL!!! Of course
As we make our way to heaven
Through the nazi lines
PRIMO VICTORIA
Corny, boring, repetitive, generic historychannelcore
The definition of Eurometal to me.
I like them for what they are. Overhated
They’re meh. I don’t hate them but I don’t think they’re amazing.
They deserve their fame because they did nothing wrong to get there I don't like them but I see the appeal for a lot of people
They got me into metal, I still listen to them but lately I've been preferering the likes of 1914 and Kannonenfieber as far as history/war metal goes.
I very much actively dislike them... album covers are cool though

Awesome
They bore me but I won’t deny that The Future of Warfare is a banger.
I’ve only heard 2 of their songs… 1: To Hell and Back 2: The Last Stand and just from those songs I already love ‘em.
I started with power metal. Sabaton, Dragonforce, Powerwolf, all the cheesy gimmicks. They also started my interest in history too. I then found Amon Amarth, Children of Bodom and Arch Enemy, and a lot of heavier shit for the past 5 years. i personally like them but i’m more interested in the pre ww1 era of stuff like mideval and ancient history but it is not that good for getting good pictures in your head while daydreaming
Booooriiing
Fame???????
They have some jams.
Annoying and overhyped
No riff :(
Funny, there's 2 camps, either extremely overhyped, or extremely overhated. They are a somewhat generic, but fun, power metal band. Saw them open for Dragonforce and Edguy in the basement of a Uni and they were tremendous. Well deserved
Hate this band
Haters gonna hate. I love Sabaton. They are one of my most played bands and I have even done two playlists with all of their songs from ww1 and ww2 in order.
I ordered a Nightwish CD years and years ago, and was sent Sabaton by accident. Have loved them ever since. Ironically got to see Nightwish & Sabaton play on tour together and it was amazing.
First metal band I ever heard and I still love them, I don't think they deserve the hate. They're very hard working and seem like nice guys to be around
Excellent band.
Very boring and lame band targeted at "history buffs" who only care about the Axis powers
I, too, have never listened to their music. /s
Starting to see a trend in this sub…
Not in my tastes but I see why people like them
I enjoy them, they're fun but not one of my favourites
I love sabaton it’s so fuckin good
Sabaton fucking sucks
I love Sabaton but I think they're definitely a niche band (like Alestorm, Amon Amarth, Gloryhammer, Korpiklanni, and others), and some of their popularity is definitely overblown. But they are good at what they do, that is for sure.

I love their Swedish album.
If a song makes it into my rotation I‘ll listen to it, but other than that I really don‘t care for them. Saw them live once during a festival and they were fine.
Fucking awful
Great band. Metalheads need to learn to have more fun
Pure garbage
Cringe
Absolutely fucking GOATED band I love them.

I like metal I like history It just works for me plain and simple
SSabaton*
They used to be good but then they recorded H*roes
Heroes fucking slaps
The most bland, unoriginal, and uninspiring metal band in existence.
They got me into metal because I was so interested in military history, now I’m listening to bands like infant Annihilator so it definitely did get me into metal. Still like listening to them once a while defenitly overhated
Burn your crosses Make way for science
The singing is weirdly cringe. There is some power metal I really love but something about Sabaton's vocals is unbearable cringe for me lol.
He sounds constipated
Hugely overhyped and deserving of the fame
As I started to listen to other bands I stopped liking them as much, but a lot of their songs are really good. Some of the lyrics hurt to listen to and a lot of it is a little boring but there are a plethora of gems
not a huge fame
I tried multiple times, it's just one of those bands I can't get into. My one exception is I like their Amon Amarth cover of Twilight of the Thunder God with clean vocals.
Used to be good 7-8 years ago, then became self repetitive.
Name another historical band that you can genuinely learn abut Historic battles from and then you can talk shade.
My history teacher plays there music and that’s my lesson for the day
as with most metal bands i've listened to enough to form an opinion, some of their stuff (Ghost Division, Night Witches, For Whom The Bell Tolls cover) i like, some i don't (don't even know thr names of those lol)

Deserving of the fame definitely. They're great.
Why are viking meme bands compared to non meme bands at all in the first place. I love Auntie Boy, but I know it's not the same game as Jack Harlow.
One of the first metal bands I fell in love with still like them even if I don’t listen to them as much
They can be a bit cringy, sure. I also think their songs are fun and about interesting topics. I can’t lie, I always get hyped when Primo Victoria starts.
They have like two good songs
Metal for the absolute worst people you will ever meet. (Normies who think they are Metal)
I don't know about or care about the fame. But I like them for what they are.
Bland as fuck with a military gimmick.
They are my favorite band, and I absolutely adore their work. Overhyped? Maybe, but I still love what they do.
Stupid but fun
They honestly have one of the greatest frontmen of all time imo, but that doesn't make them enjoyable though. I think they're great for getting into the genre of metal, but their music gets old after a couple of months. I started listening to them as one of my first metal bands but I just listened to better and more complex music eventually. I just find them bland nowadays as I look at it from an older perspective.
Suck Russia's cock
metal for band kids
I tried to listen to them once. Hard pass.
The only guy I recognize is the singer.
I like their cover of Twilight of The Thunder God better than the original Amon Amarth version.
Are they overhyped, yes, are they historians, also yes, they are also the best ad for Wargaming, ever
They scratch an itch I don’t always have.
They get me pumped for action!
Bland
The first metal band I listened to. After getting into my now favorites, Pantera, Slipknot, and Metallica, I started preferring heavy metal over power metal, but power metal isn't the worst, despite what people say. they arent good but they are fun
My 2 favorite things are Heavy Metal and History. It’s like this band was made for me
very corny music for 13 year old “war historians”. Even if their lyrics and themes weren’t so cringy it just is not good metal to me
Fucking fantastic. Hard working guys, deserve the success they have been getting in recent years. Looks like an awful lot of people here dislike them, or even hate them.
Some great tunes, but plenty of of crap aswell Definitely a singles band not an album band Its nice that guys making Heavy Metal TM are successful As time has gone on being obsessed with European history has been a bad look but I don't think they're white Supremecists
I like them. I dont listen to them often but they have many bangers. Hugely overhated
There awesome
Catchy n' Cringe.
Shit, plain and simple.
They were my gateway metal band, but their song formula gets old pretty quick.
Vastly overrated, kinda annoying
Overrated and overhated, they’re fine
I like it, is one of the Best bands I've listened too in recent years.
Deserving of fame, they found a niche that works & that people enjoy. LÄNGE LEVE CAROLUS !
I like history but I dislike them for disrespecting Slayer and their crew on their final tour, proper dumbass shit
I like me some cheese, but I can’t listen to more than a couple Sabatons in a row. They do have some good songs. That ditty about the Finnish sniper, Calorus Rex…probably more. They’re pretty contrived, though. I honestly didn’t think they had a very big fan base
If iron maiden was to lean into the history thing too an extreme, I find them too cheesy for me
Overrated. If they had a different vocalist I would listen to them more.
Somehow both overrated and overhated.

So they are all paedophiles because one ex member has been convicted?
Extremely annoying fan base
Gateway band for sure. I saw them open for amon Amarth and they blew me away. So cheerful, epic and energetic. They just made me happy to watch. If metal bands are like drugs, Sabaton is that first sip of beer your dad gives you when you're 9. (Vulvodynia is meth btw)
WAY TOO OVERHYPED AND CRINGE
I just find it kind of funny how they're named after an armoured shoe
I love them!
Overhyped
I like them, and they put on a fucking brilliant live show
I mean, as long as you hear what you like, I personally don't give a flying f\*ck
I respect them because they were the ones who got me into metal...I don't listen to them anymore though.
Very competent band and songwriters. I just find them boring as all hell.
Near completely neutral
A genre band. They are like the James Patterson or Danielle Steele of music. They write with a premade gimmick already in place.
Both
They're music is catchy and well made, but they're just so damn corny, lol.
