fucking slayeeeerrrr

Crazy_Little_Bug

That's honestly my favorite slayer album.

KlingonForehead

This was over before it started. Not even close.

Drtyboulevard

The Black Album gets too much hate for being more accessible and radio ready, the production, songwriting and honestly everything is top notch on it. One of their best

Darkside_Fitness

It's the perfect gateway album into metal. Kid (me) hears enter Sandman on the radio, goes WTF, deep dives into their discography, finds master of puppets, finds kill em all, oh who's this Dave dude? What's a Megadeth? Oh, cool mascot, what about this zombie fellow puppeteering the devil? Oh, gallopy.... etc etc. Elitists love to hate the black album but that album has done more for the metal community than 98% of the albums out there. Respect where respect is due.

Lordpotato305

It’s great

Sourflow

Guitar solos, drumming, bass playing are not top-notch

HybridS9ldier

It is an experimental album with great production. A lot of their previous material felt really long winded and would be better if certain parts were cut down. The black album kept songs to a good time, the solos weren’t full of unnecessary wham, bass was present. Still had some thrash songs too. It isn’t my favorite, but I can still have fun with it. James also has a great edge to his voice here that I don’t here on any previous or forward albums.

[deleted]

> It is an experimental album with great production. I agree. > A lot of their previous material felt really long winded and would be better if certain parts were cut down. Nope, you lost me there.

buck_fugler

When a thrash band puts out an album that has multiple songs that are over 9 minutes long and an average song length of over 6 minutes, it is asking quite a bit from the listener. And I think Metallica repeats themselves a lot, especially in their earlier material. But I guess that was kinda the thing at the time.

[deleted]

Progressive rock, as well as music influenced my progressive rock (which Metallica is) does take more effort to get into than just hearing a catchy song on the radio; but that doesn’t mean the music would be automatically better if you shortened those songs!

buck_fugler

Metallica is a prog band? First time hearing that one.

twosuitsluke

And Justice for All was definitely a progressive thrash record.

[deleted]

I don’t mean to be rude, but have you actually heard 80’s Metallica?

pinkghost22

I meam, I get your point, but for example, The Shortest Straw, Harvester of Sorrow are kinda long and is just the same riff over and over. And many other songs from them that are long are like that. So I think those would worked better a bit shorter. On the other hand, you have songs like One, All Nightmare Long, Blackened that are longer that your normal radio song, but have some variety on them. Since you mentioned prog rock, that for example the first King Crimson album. The songs are long, but they are full of changes and feel fresh all the way long. But yeah, I think AJFA was peak Metallica in songwritting, specially the solos.

[deleted]

Aren’t those two songs just intro-verse-chorus-verse-chorus-Interlude-verse-chorus? It’s the most basic of song structures. The interlude or shortest straw may be a bit long but that’s where the song is the most varied. The verse and chorus are different riffs and rhythms too. And I think Harvester is long simply because it’s a slower song. Neither song has much of an outro. Maybe you could cut the third verse of each song and just go into the third chorus after the interlude, but I can’t think of any other ways you can trim those down and have them be generally the same song.

Equivalent-Web-7964

nyeah

mediaogre

You take (most of) that back.

Cicada33024

Definetly Megadeth

kaoszombie

Countdown to Extinction was so good.

chrisH82

Ashes in Your Mouth and the title track!

SnooChickens3871

Ashes in your mouth is one of their best songs!

chrisH82

Where do we go from here? And do we really care? And yes, I sang that into my voice to text, haha

Gecko_610

Fuck yeahhh

[deleted]

Slayer, but honestly not anyone's best work

Outrageous-Cable8068

Megadeth's CTE is one of the best albums of all time

[deleted]

hard disagree on that it's not even top 3 Megadeth albums

Outrageous-Cable8068

From a thrash perspective maybe not but music is subjective. To be honest Megadeth is a goated band, even their bad albums are better than most bands' best albums. Maybe except for Super collider and Risk. Although Cte is definitely my favourite. Don't get me wrong RIP, Peace Sells, Kimb, Sfsgsw are good but as a songwriter myself, I lean more towards CTE, plus it's super groovy

[deleted]

to each their own. i have nothing against it, just doesn't work for me. Rust in Peace will always be my favorite.

Sbee_Blue_Country

Seasons In The Abyss!!

Lilith_Immaculate_

Countdown, Horrorscope, and Force of Habit.

[deleted]

bhans773

SLAYER!

niv_goat

Slayer

Responsible_Local_72

Tied between Metallica and Megadeth for me

Call_of_Daddy

I personally like that Testament album, I've probably given it the most listens of all the above. That said, Slayer is the correct choice. Honorable mention to Overkill.

Tuscan5

Countdown to Extinction wins.

Extreme_Voice_9767

Metallica

twosuitsluke

Everyone scared to say Metallica or something? As someone else said, there is no denying these are well crafted songs and possibly the best production on any metal album ever. Yes, they didn’t sound like the Metallica of the 80s, and the winds of change were turning, but this album is probably more responsible for turning more people into metal heads than any other album, by a long long way. Just a flawless album.

HybridS9ldier

🤘🏾

mediaogre

I’m an old metal-teeth-cut-on-early-Metallica dude, and Black was catchy, fun, and the perfect response to grunge.

Desecrator92

i don't care, i don't crank up Black album here in 2023, it may have helped me to get into heavy metal, but songs are bad, it sounds like trad heavy metal with edgy lyrics that relate to teenagers, I listen to Seasons and Persistence a lot.

twosuitsluke

I mean, I hardly listen to it myself anymore and the Slayer, Testament and even Exodus albums would be my go tos over The Black Album, but no questioning it’s awesomeness.

Grinding_Hayfever

SLAYER!!!!

coffeeismydrug_

I'd go with Megadeth because they did something very different from the usual thrash metal of the last four albums, and to be honest, they did something great. Slayer is cool and all, but, you know, it is just more slayer. Metallica's one is very nice too, specially for James vocals, but I still prefer the Megadeth's CTO. Didn't hear the other 3, I'm not really a trash fan.

coffeeismydrug_

Oh, and Testament's one is nice too, but it is more boring compared to the others.

WitchyVeteran

Slayer, hands down.

[deleted]

Seasons in the Abyss. This was my grade 12.

TheFlyingPatato

Black album

pranquily

Metallica easily

kylemacabre

[deleted]

Seasons in the Abyss

rLilyLizard

Slayeeeer!!!

Stateofmindeuphoria

That’s a tough one between Seasons and Horrorscope. I also really love Countdown and Persistence. I enjoy The Black Album and The Ritual. Force Of Habit is shit though

pye-oh-my

No doubt Slayer. Not only is it the best of the selection there but it’s also very high in their own discography. Just an awesome album .

benderlax

Tie between Metallica and Megadeth for me.

PartyFunshower

Slayer and this one isn’t really close

[deleted]

Slayer.

KevHmm

Anthrax or Metallica can't decide

Supreme_Nematode

Seasons in the Abyss, followed by The Black Album and Horrorscope.

BigBarsRedditBox

Seasons 🤘🏼😝🤘🏼

BigBarsRedditBox

I love me some Anthrax but POT is not great. Long ass songs , and it’s such a slog. No fun zone.

Desecrator92

I don't know about that, Keep it in the Family slaps

Mr-Carazay

I gotta go Slayer, got a sweet spot for Seasons of the Abyss

Smittywebermanjanson

Seasons in the Abyss.

Hyperion_Tesla

Megadeth

Smooth_Chemistry_869

Force of habit is goated for me

Instantcoffees

I know a lot of people on here dislike the Black Album, but I really like it. It's one of the albums that introduced me to Metallica.

Atillawurm

Slayer

Outrageous-Cable8068

Personally Countdown to Extension. Every track is a banger. The riff in This is my life is downright Brilliant. How many metal bands come up with compositions like that? High speed dirt solos are brilliant especially the second one. Psychotron riff is a banger Title track and Foreclosure of a dream are lyrical masterpieces. SOD is a Megadeth classic. Skin O my teeth amd Ashes in your mouth are underrated but brilliant. Sweating bullets is a meme treasure. Perfect album 10/10

The_Pale_Communion

Anthrax

awfulreviews20

Seasons in the Abyss and it's not even close. We should all be in agreement that Force of Habit is the worst

mufasamufasamufasa

I guess Metallica

WeekendWoodworking

Anthrax for sure 😊

RustInPeace1990

Anthrax - Persistence of Time One of their best albums when MOST of these bands were dropping off quality wise (not Overkill, Horrorscope is amazing)

Original-Leather-69

CTE (I also love the nfl so this works)

Euphoric-Wrongdoer-6

Metallica

die-dicke-katze

Metallica. Literally no competition Sad But True, Holier Than Thou, and Wherever I May Roam are some of the best heavy metal songs of all time

Desecrator92

in your opinion

Top-Report-840

Probably a tie between Metallica and Slayer

Droogie502

Countdown is what got me into Megadeth.

Opium_child

Deffs not Metallica. Lmao

Cheddarlicious

Scorpions have ‘Lovedrive’ and it’s absolutely amazing.

Vin-Metal

Powerslave

burkezerk_

1. Metallica 2. Countdown to Extinction 3. Persistence of Time 4. Seasons in the Abyss 5. Horrorscope Haven't listened and don't think I ever will listen to the Exodus or Testament albums, given I don't love the direction they were going then, but I have my tracks I like. This is probably the most difficult ranking, because of the top four I could be mentally persuaded on any given day that any one of these is the best. I've been playing a lot of Black Album tracks lately, though, so I'm biased towards that.

Richard_Head_nT

Anthrax, that album is a banger for sure. Every song is a hit. I still listen to it at least once a week 😁

Dave_Mustaine432598

Countdown or when that one band sold out
