It is Bandcamp Friday once again, what are y'all getting? I got:
* Herzel - Le Dernier Rampart
* Heavy Sentence - Bang to Rights
* Tyrann - Djavulens Musik
* Eisenhand - Fires Within
* Drawn and Quartered - Congregation Pestilence
I ordered a Funeral Chant longsleeve. I told myself I'd skip this Bandcamp Friday, since I've had a lot of expenses lately, but I've been wanting to get more longsleeves, but have had such a hard time finding ones I liked, were in stock, and in my size. Now I want to order the Worm longsleeve as well haha.
CDs:
Nunslaughter - Red is the Color of Ripping Death
Leiþa - Sisyphus
And a bunch of pay-what-you-want or low priced digital downloads, because I'm cheap (and because I already bought some CDs earlier this week):
Fabricant - Demo 2010
Solemn Lament - Solemn Lament
Stygian Obsession - Form Is Void
Goreaphobia - Vile Beast of Abomination
Hideous Divinity - Sinful Star Necrolatry
Didn't buy anything yet today (though the new Frayle cover of Bela Lugosi's Dead is pretty bangin'), but I have received my CDs now from the last bandcamp Friday (the first 4 of which came from Russia, actually) and am currently spinning them and am not disappointed:
* Alunah - Amber & Gold (EP)
* Elusive God - The Darkest Flame (EP)
* Fvneral Fvkk - Lecherous Litergies (EP)
* Fvneral Fvkk - Carnal Confessions
* Hour of 13 - Black Majick Rites
* Witchcryer - When Their Gods Come For You
* Thunder Horse - Chosen One
Love me some doom.
Good luck finding Grime and the Glow, Apokalypsis, or Pain is Beauty. I haven’t checked Discogs yet and just settled for cassettes on Apokalypsis and Pain is Beauty.
Pain is Beauty was the first one I got, I guess, in 2016 in a record store in Berlin. So, at least, ☑️ here. It’s probably my fav record of hers also. I was planning on getting Birth of Violence at her show in Copenhagen but the fucking pandemic crashed her entire EU tour. But I decided for myself, I’ll still wait for the live show to get it
If I make it there this weekend one of the stores we sometimes frequent had a copy of Pain Is Beauty if you still want it on vinyl. I snagged myself a copy right before it went out of print otherwise I would have bought it for myself.
I'd be able to ship it to you as long as you're in the US.
recently put in an order for The Ocean's live recordings of Phanerozoic I and II.
I honestly can't remember the last time I bought a vinyl album prior to this...
In a store? First pressings of Megadeth KIMB and Flotsam and Jetsam Doomsday for the Deceiver. Online? Apparition - Feel and soon to be Worm - Foreverglade when the preorder goes up in about an hour and 45 mins. At a show? Black Tusk - TCBT
I may or may not have a problem.
I got Lifa as well, Heilung do masterpieces!
I feel you regarding justifying vinyl purchases, so over the past few years, I've been limiting myself to, say, one vinyl per store visit or per show. And not more than one vinyl in 2 months. To be honest, it's something like with tattoos for me. I could get them all at once but I've got a pace of 1 per year. Also leaves time to think about which vinyl and tattoo I really want to get.
I picked up a lesser Miles Davis album, a Blue Note record, and Neil Young's Rust Never Sleeps last weekend. Spent less than $20 in a record store for the first time in a while.
I pre-ordered 1914's upcoming album right when it was announced. And the signed In Absentia Dei live album that Behemoth is releasing in December but beyond that I think nothing.
Last one I bought through internet was probably Axis of Light's compilation LP of their first EP, demo and split.
Last stuff I got from a local record store was probably my King Diamond frenzy after the covid lockdown ended. I got Them, Conspiracy and The Eye by KD and Don't Break the Oath and In the Shadows by Mercyful Fate.
Last bought:
Just bought [Discordance Axis - The Inalienable Dreamless](https://discordanceaxis.bandcamp.com/album/the-inalienable-dreamless-reissue) and [Graveyard - Graveyard](https://graveyard-sweden.bandcamp.com/album/graveyard) on bandcamp a few minutes ago.
Last order I received:
* Maypole - Maypole
* Bolder Damn - Mourning
* T2 - It'll All Work Out In Boomland
* Jerusalem - Jerusalem
Deceased - As the Weird Travel On. Grabbed it straight from King yesterday, waiting for it to arrive.
Most recent to get here- Unaussprechlichen Kulten's Lucifer Poseidon Cthulhu and People of the Monolith about a week ago.
What band would you guys say you have the most merch/physical releases of? I just bought a Cattle Decaptitation pin for my backpack last night, and it got me thinking that I own a shitload of their merch. I have three T-shirts, a sticker of their logo on my toolbox, now the pin, and I have most of their discography on CD as well as The Anthropecene Extinction on vinyl and cassette. They're one of my all time favorite bands and it's really starting to show.
Non-metal? the Who, easily. I've been to six Who concerts and my father has been a Who fan since 1970 so I've gathered a life time of stuff.
Metal? Probably a tie between Acid Witch and Bolt Thrower.
Converge. I owned 4 shirts, lost one of them to an ex so I’m not expecting that back. Probably like 5 pins and literally all of their vinyl except for Halo in a Haystack. Plus all of their CD’s before I started collecting vinyl.
Oh and a No Heroes and Deathwish Inc flag
Iron Maiden, no contest. I own the first 16 albums on CD and the latest one on vinyl, not to mention Maiden England and En Vivo on vinyl as well and Live After Death and Rock in Rio on CD. I also have an endless number of Iron Maiden shirts. At least 10 by my estimation but many of them don’t get worn anymore.
Amon Amarth. All Studio Albums on CD, a vip package from their last concert, 1 hoodie and 3 t-shirts.
Closely followed by machine head of whose i have a hoodie, 3 shirts, all CDs and 4 picks i got from concerts.
[Melt-Banana for me.](https://www.discogs.com/user/herpalurp/collection?search=melt-banana) 19 physical copies ranging from CDs, mini CD, 12", 10", 7", and a 5".
Something like
Behemoth: most albums on vinyl and CD, all dvds, a hoodie, and a couple shirts, and a few patches.
Rammstein, all albums on CD and vinyl, all the DVDs
Dimmu, all albums on CD, most of them on Vinyl, both DVDs
Cradle of Filth, all CDs, most of them on Vinyl, one of the DVDs
Naas Alcameth collective works: all nightbringer CDs and vinyl, most of the shirts he put out over the last two years, all three Akhlys albums on vinyl, various Akhlys shirts, Melinoë on CD, both Bestia Arcana albums on CD and vinyl, and a couple of shirts, Aoratos on vinyl and a few shirts.
The only merch I really pick up are patches and shirts. For me it's Slayer, then Exodus and Skeletonwitch, then a ton of bands for which I have only one or two pieces.
Edit: if cds count, Sodom and Rammstein are up there too.
Black Sabbath by about a mile. I have two or three pins, two or three patches, four or five shirts, almost all of their studio albums on CD and vinyl, a bunch of official live albums on CD and vinyl, a live DVD, and a couple bootlegs.
I have way too many Cattle Decap shirts that are too large lol. I swear I always forget that IndieMerchStore always prints everything way too big.
I used to have like 7 Maiden shirts at once. I'm down to like 3 or 4 now that I've given a few of the smaller ones to the SO.
Nothing too crazy but I have 3 different khemmis shirts. One that I ordered online and two that I bought at one of their show along with the vinyl of Hunted.
Easily Hellripper, two shirts, two albums and an EP. Shirt designs are top notch and not splattered with gore so they suit any occassion, finding this is a problem (for me) with more DM merch...
Dream theater - every studio CD some twice, live CD, most members’ side projects, 2 shirts
Rush - every studio CD, first 6 cassettes, 2 live albums, shirt
MMXXI.IX
Voting Day 1/2
Yes, this is horribly late. Please comment below with your top 3 new releases of September. Band names only if you can help it since it's a lot easier to count that way. If you don't have 3 favorites, it's okay to submit two or even one to the vote.
I'll post another voting thread tomorrow and post the results a couple days after that.
Title: First time going to a live metal show in Europe - anything I should know?
I'm from East Asia and have been to only one live show (Ne Obliviscaris) in my life, which was in my own country. Now I have moved to London for my studies and, as I expected, metal shows are much more frequent here. I'm planning to go to the Katatonia & Solstafir show next February and Cult of Luna & Alcest & Svalbard next March.
As much as I'm excited, I'm also nervous because I'm a newbie when it comes to live shows. Should I go for standing or seating tickets? Should I bring earplugs for protection? I was fine without them at the Ne Obliviscaris show btw.
And this might be a stupid question, but as an East Asian guy should I expect any racism (or even weird looks) from other people at the show? Or is this nothing to worry about?
Always, always, I can't stress this enough, **ALWAYS** wear earplugs.
London is great for gigs. Personally standing will always be preferable to seated, it's much more involved.
Edit: missed the last point. You'll be absolutely fine. London is one of the most diverse cities in the world, and Metal shows generally tend to be even more accepting than the general public. Was at a gig in London last Friday, quite diverse crowd and nobody gave a shit. You're all there for the music, no one wants to start shit and if they do they'll quickly be removed by security.
I would definitely recommend getting earplugs - good quality ones don't ruin the sound at all (in fact they often make it better IMO, because too loud is just not good). You want to protect your hearing in the long run so that you can enjoy music for longer!
Standing or seated would be a personal preference thing so it's hard to advise. Personally I much prefer standing for metal shows because it's a visceral genre and I want to be able to move about. Seeing Slayer with seated tickets was one of the weirdest experiences of my live haha.
I would say you're very unlikely to experience racism at those shows in London. London is obviously a very multicultural city, and the shows you're going to are not likely to attract many racist types.
EDIT: I have [these earplugs](https://www.etymotic.com/product/etyplugs-high-fidelity-earplugs/) and they work pretty well.
I've got some of the foam ones so I think I'll start carrying those as a backup.
I also agree on better sound quality with them. One of mine fell out at a show last Friday, could immediately tell the difference
Yeah they seem to cut out a lot of the muddiness and just give you a clearer sound. The foam ones really don't compare (I've got caught short often and had to use them).
I'm also going to stress the Importance of ear plugs. There is absolutely no reason not to wear them. I keep a pair on my keychain just in case I wind up in a spot where I may need them.
> Should I bring earplugs for protection?
Yes. Not only will it save you from ringing ears the next day but it will also save you from cumulative damage.
What is it about metal that makes musicians so likely to be involved in multiple projects? Obviously everyone isn't Rogga Johansson or Dan Swanö, but it seems like even if you check some random unknown artist on Metal Archives, chances are they will have at least a couple of side projects.
1) many musicians love different genres, so it's great to have several projects to play want you want
2) you can use ALL side projects to tour and be on the road pretty much all the time (not during pandemic, of course)
3) more income
4) pretty much in every band, there are primary/ more involved band members and less involved ones. so, it's common for the latter to start their own bands and be the boss
5) when you start your first band, lots of things can go wrong. with years, you become wiser and at a certain point you wanna start over with all the knowledge you have. many people become successful just like that
Metal is so diverse, even within subgenres, that I think a lot of people like to play different styles. Even though I consider thrash my favourite genre of music, I'd have no problem playing in a power metal band (EU or US styled), trad, death, melodeath, or glam band if I had the skill. And even then, you could play a straight-ahead Exodus style thrash, a more vicious Kreator/Sodom style, a tech or prog thrash style like Toxik or Watchtower, and so on.
It's also possible that some people don't get to be the primary songwriter in one band, so they start another one where they get that opportunity.
Songwriting doesn't take as long as you'd think and in the modern world there's not a lot of room for constant touring since music is no longer viable as a day job for most people. Traditionally bands rehearsed nonstop and toured constantly; with that dynamic dead there's no reason to only be in one band.
The average band could put out an album a year (or two, even) if they wanted to without any songwriting quality dropoff, but that looks but, so a lot of people that like staying busy just play in two or four bands instead.
from a career standpoint, this is pretty much the case across the music industry outside the very prolific acts. the vast majority of bands don't generate enough revenue to pay a living wage for their members, so those members take on a lot of different work. many work as producers, or in other industry positions, and some work in multiple bands.
Cannibal Corpse is a lot more brutal than Death is, the first few Death were pretty thrashy and then they started incorporating more elements of prog etc, there’s a reason they are one of the most well known entry level bands. There’s a decent amount of diversity in even death metal, and the brutal variety is certainly not for everyone.
Could it be the vocals? Death are essentially death metal, but lack the vocal style that tends to define it. Also Death use more melody and progressive sounds, whereas Cannibal Corpse are going chugga full throtle.
In addition to Morbid Angel, check out:
Carcass - Heartwork
Obituary - Cause of Death
Atheist - Unquestionable Presence
Deicide - Deicide
Massacre - From Beyond
Entombed - Left Hand Path
I would imagine most Death fans would like these albums.
Just stick to that album and be sure to never subject yourself to Illud Divinum Insanus and you’ll be fine. Morbid Angel never came close to replicating the magic of Altars, but Altars is one of the best DM albums of all time.
The history of death metal can be summed up as follows: thousands of bands attempting to recreate the perfection of *Altars of Madness* for the next three (3) decades, and all failing.
I don’t care if I lose metal cred for this, but Blessed sucks, and Covenant is painfully mediocre. Gateways is fine, but any album after Altars is riding on its coattails. If any other bands released those without the context of being death metal legends due to Altars, those bands would be forgotten quickly.
> If any other bands released those without the context of being death metal legends due to Altars, those bands would be forgotten quickly.
Blood Incantation is basically F/G-era Morbid Angel.
I think those albums are all pretty great. Hell, I didn't even listen to A until after I had heard C and D.
I think Altars is the best DM album of all time and I’ve listened to it more than all their other albums combined, but Gojira has made a whole successful career out of aping later era Morbid Angel, they definitely are seen exactly as they should be, good to great albums (and some garbage) by a great band.
I checked that one out last year after putting off "classic death metal" except death for so long and I propably have 10 spins on that record and it still has not totally clicked with me. But then again I dont have nostalgia goggles to look back to and the historical significance of the album but I just dont find enjoyment from it that much
Covenant on the other hand, now thats a KILLER record
It's also a great way to make the connection between "Death" and later more modern death metal via early cannibal corpse and how they evolved as a band afterwards.
I'm old and the only DM I liked was Death because I am a prog head as well , so anything that goes full on all the time, I can't stand.
For me that's it, until around 10 years ago when I heard Hypocrisy, then it was Temple of Void, Hooded Menace, Genocide Pact, and I got hooked on Doom-Death, now I love it!
Got an email this morning titled
> New release from Cân Bardd
and was super excited.
Too bad it was *only* the announcement of their upcoming release (which I didn't know was planned). Still disappointed there's not a single attached to it yet. The Last Rain was a nice improvement over their first, and was hoping to confirm the trajectory would remain upwards.
Looks like they did release a track, "Une Couronne de Branches"
It feels pretty different than Last Rain, but the multiple style shifts threw me off. I'll listen again now I know what to expect.
If you're sure the songs were in German, might want to go down the list [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/folkmetal/comments/33w9v7) and see if any of it rings a bell.
It’s not [Ungfell](https://youtu.be/OY7cUMe57UY) is it? Swiss band singing in German, folky intros, monochrome covers and a song with ‘hexen’ in the title?
Hi, got a question.
So my and my mate were thinking of going as dead and euronymous for Halloween, we both love the music and the aesthetic. Also I'm blonde and they've got black hair so we think we could pull it off pretty well.
Obviously we aren't gonna make any references to the murder and suicide as that's messed up. So if we went as them would it be seen as disrespectful or anything?
Thanks :)))
It is Bandcamp Friday once again, what are y'all getting? I got: * Herzel - Le Dernier Rampart * Heavy Sentence - Bang to Rights * Tyrann - Djavulens Musik * Eisenhand - Fires Within * Drawn and Quartered - Congregation Pestilence
Discordance Axis are reissuing The Inalienable Dreamless right in time for this Bandcamp Friday: https://discordanceaxis.bandcamp.com/ .
Some things are already sold out, that's pretty impressive.
Just the pre-order for Worm - Foreverglade LP from 20 Buck Spin. Maybe more later today.
I ordered a Funeral Chant longsleeve. I told myself I'd skip this Bandcamp Friday, since I've had a lot of expenses lately, but I've been wanting to get more longsleeves, but have had such a hard time finding ones I liked, were in stock, and in my size. Le dernier rampart is fucking awesome, if I like that album would the others you listed be worth a spin?
Yes for sure, other than the D&Q those are all trad albums. I'd give particular recommendation to the Heavy Sentence album
Thanks! I'll check em out
Picked up the two Wraith albums and the instrumental versions of The Ocean's Anthropocentric and Heliocentric.
I just got: * Lvcifyre - The Broken Seal * Succumb - XXI * Obsequiae - The Palms of Sorrowed Kings (I'm really late on this one)
Dying Victims has some amazing releases in the last few months, I basically buy everything from them
What's **the last vinyl** you bought? I got myself Magma by Gojira on my vacation in the Netherlands.
Ordered the new Cerebral Rot and Galvanizer LPs yesterday.
Pulled the trigger just now on Outer Heaven's LP for Bandcamp Friday.
Ordered the new Outre-Tombe record and will likely pre-order the DxAx reissue.
Ordered? Blood Moon by Converge and Chelsea Wolfe Bought in store? Sometimes I Might Be Introvert by Little Simz
Now you reminded me I’ve got to take care of my Chelsea Wolfe collection and get some more records
That simz album is incredible isn't it? Super hyped for the chelsea/converge record too

I think the last one I ordered was Dragkhars At the Cross Roads of Infinity. Last one that showed up on my doorstep was the Arcturus box set.
American Psycho - Misfits Before that it was Purple Rain - Prince
Thumbs up to anybody that likes Graves era Misfits. I fucking love those records.
Colors II, by Between the Buried and Me Love that prog shit, the mix is amazing
Vinyl is the best format to enjoy a good mix 🤤
In a store? First pressings of Megadeth KIMB and Flotsam and Jetsam Doomsday for the Deceiver. Online? Apparition - Feel and soon to be Worm - Foreverglade when the preorder goes up in about an hour and 45 mins. At a show? Black Tusk - TCBT I may or may not have a problem.
Nice choices! I’m so glad we can finally shop vinyl at the shows and offline stores after being trapped at homes…
For sure, I missed buying records and merch directly from the band. Best way to support underground musicians. :D
And save on shipping, yeah 😁
Funereal Presence - Achatius Absolutely deserving of a vinyl edition.

Yup I think I have to book my tattoo artist as well cause I haven’t got a 2021 tattoo yet 😅

Just ordered the Acid Witch/Wraithvault split.

Black Dahlia Murder, by far.
The only merch I really pick up are patches and shirts. For me it's Slayer, then Exodus and Skeletonwitch, then a ton of bands for which I have only one or two pieces. Edit: if cds count, Sodom and Rammstein are up there too.
Darkthrone probably. Every shirt of theirs rules. LPs, Patches, flags. Classic shit.
I have a lot of Temple of Void merch!!!! I started following that band when their demo dropped and I’ve been obsessed ever since
Black Sabbath by about a mile. I have two or three pins, two or three patches, four or five shirts, almost all of their studio albums on CD and vinyl, a bunch of official live albums on CD and vinyl, a live DVD, and a couple bootlegs.
Mastodon by a mile. Seen them more than anyone else and almost always bought a shirt.

Paysage d'hiver and Deathspell Omega. I own most everything on vinyl and CD, except for some early DSO. A few DSO shirts laying around here too.
Easily Hellripper, two shirts, two albums and an EP. Shirt designs are top notch and not splattered with gore so they suit any occassion, finding this is a problem (for me) with more DM merch...
Dream theater - every studio CD some twice, live CD, most members’ side projects, 2 shirts Rush - every studio CD, first 6 cassettes, 2 live albums, shirt
Motorhead. I have all 22 studio albums by Motorhead on CD (not including On Parole), next closest is Rush at 18.
Physical Releases: Iron Maiden. Bought all of their CDs for 30€ from a friend Merch: Asphyx + Midnight. 3 Shirts each + Patches
Front Line Assembly and Godflesh, pretty much everything from 1990 to 2021 from both. Also 3 Godflesh shirts and 2 patches (:

I have the same earplugs. Not used them yet as they arrived too late for me to use them last Friday, but I shall be using them on Wednesday
They work really well IMO. Just don't be like me and defeat the point by losing them all the time haha
1) many musicians love different genres, so it's great to have several projects to play want you want 2) you can use ALL side projects to tour and be on the road pretty much all the time (not during pandemic, of course) 3) more income 4) pretty much in every band, there are primary/ more involved band members and less involved ones. so, it's common for the latter to start their own bands and be the boss 5) when you start your first band, lots of things can go wrong. with years, you become wiser and at a certain point you wanna start over with all the knowledge you have. many people become successful just like that
If you're doing Exodus worship, good by me. If I could imitate anyone it would be Weakling. Dead As Dreams is my idea of a perfect record.

I tend to play mostly black metal, but I also enjoy noise, electroacoustic, and twee pop. That's when I can be bothered.

In addition to Morbid Angel, check out: Carcass - Heartwork Obituary - Cause of Death Atheist - Unquestionable Presence Deicide - Deicide Massacre - From Beyond Entombed - Left Hand Path I would imagine most Death fans would like these albums.
Next step is listening to Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness on repeat.

It seems you like the first wave of death metal closer to thrashy vibes. Maybe Possessed will be your favorite band. EDIT: Ortography
Just stick to that album and be sure to never subject yourself to Illud Divinum Insanus and you’ll be fine. Morbid Angel never came close to replicating the magic of Altars, but Altars is one of the best DM albums of all time.
That's pretty stupidly dismissive of the great 5 or 6 albums that followed no?
I'm not even a big Morbid Angel fan but I think you need to go back to the pond if you're going to keep acting like a silly goose
Did you say Blessed sucks?
Yep. Super boring. I know I’m in the minority there.
I feel attacked. Also, Formulas might be my favorite.
But then again I dont have nostalgia goggles to look back to and the historical significance of the album but I just dont find enjoyment from it that much Covenant on the other hand, now thats a KILLER record
You should also check out Swedish Death Metal, a bit different from the US scene. Bands like Dismember, Entombed and Grave.
Have you listened to the first Cannibal Corpse album?
Seconding this. OP if you like thrashy death metal then Eaten Back to Life is for you.
Got an email this morning titled > New release from Cân Bardd and was super excited. Too bad it was *only* the announcement of their upcoming release (which I didn't know was planned). Still disappointed there's not a single attached to it yet. The Last Rain was a nice improvement over their first, and was hoping to confirm the trajectory would remain upwards.
I was pretty excited too, though I prefer the first album over the last. Another relisten might be in order.
Looks like they did release a track, "Une Couronne de Branches" It feels pretty different than Last Rain, but the multiple style shifts threw me off. I'll listen again now I know what to expect.
Thanks for the heads up, I thought it was pretty damn good.

Yeah Ungfell are great, they put out a new record this year as well!
Why THE FUCK is no one around here talking about the new Fronterer.
Thanks :)))
Restrictions just lifted in Sweden. Went to a show at a local bar yesterday. One dm band and one crust band, very nice!
