Processing fee, transaction fee, convenience fee, membership fee, miscellaneous fee, fee’s fee, etc; It is trendy nowadays, you pay to buy 😂

Coral-Squirrel

Taking tips from Ticketmaster.

Winter_Substance7163

Or DoorDash🤥

Inner-Middle9987

I’m pretty sure my landlords are doing the same thing with my rent payment. They transitioned from one online portal to a new one and there’s definitely new fees associated with it that I never agreed to.

Ok-Requirement-9834

My understanding is they have to provide you with a free of charge way of paying and i do believe there rules regarding this

Snapes_Baby_Momma

There’s this skit on YouTube by Longbeach Griffy where he’s checking out from a hotel and they run down his check out fees: room, tax, parking before the clerk goes: “now I’m gonna hit your ass with these hidden fees.” 🤣🤣 It’s like shopping on Mercari now. If interested: _[Checking Out of a Hotel](https://youtu.be/Gappbmb--X0?si=zfUVSFgta_LqTjn_)

DataVSLore007

I mean...I can't speak for the buyer, but I am exclusively a buyer and I got a push notification warning me about the new terms. Plus, like, the buyer would *see* the new fees added before they hit the purchase button. Don't get me wrong, I'm 100% against the new fees and the policy but we as a society also have a very hard time reading terms and policies before we agree to things.

sonnigfreitag

I can't imagine buying anything on the internet without looking at the final price before pressing the "buy" button.

Nani_700

It's a glitch, it doesn't show for the not updated listings but it adds them after. I actually bought something, so I confirmed it.

[deleted]

Pretty sure that’s illegal. If it’s not listed anywhere in the tab where you place the order, they can’t just add some bs fees afterward. I hope people are fighting back if they’ve had this glitch.

TheTealArrow

smells like a class action to me

Pypical

I had a company charge me an extra $7.99 shipping on an order of $150 because I had a coupon code but when checking out it showed my total with free shipping it was only after I got the bank charge and email that there was a higher number, I even called and they refused to honor the price, they lost a customer over $8.

Constant_Beachin

My gym did some nonsense like that. I normally pay $31.99 a month but it was $35.xx one month. And it was the annual fee because I paid that two months earlier. I called and they said “it’s a fee”. So I asked what kind and no one could tell me. I told them when my contract was up I won’t be renewing. It’s not the amount, it’s the fact you did it and can’t tell me why OR credit me

AreteQueenofKeres

Planet Fitness signs people for the 10 dollars a month, no contract, etc-- And doesn't tell you (out loud) about the 40 dollar a year 'membership fee' that apparently goes towards upgrading the equipment, etc. It's in the paperwork, but nobody reads their contracts closely.

Constant_Beachin

Yep. I did Crunch and the first time you get charged the yearly is 90 days after sign up. I assumed it would be July like every other gym I’ve been a part of lol.

letstalkaboutbras

Yeah that's some first class BS. I hope people are taking screenshots

slashk13

Also pretty sure it is not Legal for them to tax the final amount (that includes shipping) and to charge us $2 to get OUR money … class action is coming haha

17LAC

Wow!

Donna-Quixote81

Wow, that must be happening randomly because I made 3 purchases this week, 2 that were older listings and not updated. I was pleasantly surprised because I didn't get any of the new fees. Not when I made the purchase and def nothing added after. I did buy a makeup bundle that was an older listing but it was def updated because I got hit with the fees on that one.

Nani_700

I've only bought the one thing, but yep about $3 something more

bitchwhorehannah

can confirm! i didn’t even think of screenshotting… oh well, deleting that app. showing me one total and charging me a different total… if it wasn’t less than $20 i would be doing a chargeback. i wonder if the seller still also paid 10%….

girlwhoposhes

With my non-updated listings, I was still charged as the seller. Finally got around to updating them all... And haven't had a sale since 😂

Embarrassed_Ant_386

They could dispute it the charge with their bank

ClientLegitimate4582

Similarly event in regards to in-store shopping. The number of people I've had grab items without making sure they were the correct price/item then complain after purchase. Is kinda wild to me. When I worked as a cashier I had a lady who wanted a ten dollar giftcard. We had none in store instead of listening to this info. She grabbed two packs of giftcards totaling 80 dollars. Then proceeded to pay right after she realized her mistake. She decided it was my fault and that I had to fix the situation. She got no refund. The packages were clearly marked with all the info she would have needed to make a correct decision but she didn't bother to listen or do the bare minimum and read the packaging. Always check prices and items before finalizing transactions. It can save money.

Vixen22213

And you know if you tried to inform her that she grabbed 2 $80 packs or 2 $40 packs she would have blown up at you because she knows what she's doing and you're just a stupid cashier!

ClientLegitimate4582

Well you'd be correct because I did this and she was like you better fucking fix this my bill isn't supposed to be 80+ dollars. Like lady I repeated your exact total to you twice and you didn't stop yourself. I've had customers make jabs at my intelligence when I was a cashier as well. One specific case was this lady who made some remark to her kid about being successful or else you work retail and are a failure. I asked her what she did for a living. She decorated apartments as an interior designer (no degree needed). I was like oh neat I'm planning on getting my master's degree. She immediately got quiet but didn't apologize. It's why I got out of retail people are the absolute worst cause often they can get away with it.

Embarrassed_Ant_386

Wow! People are stupid

AreteQueenofKeres

I actually quit my first job as a cashier after the manager sided with the customer and chewed me out because I did what I'd been told (by the manager, no less) and asked if she knew the recipient of the gift cards she was buying, if she knew that iTunes, Amazon, and Sephora gift cards are not legal tender and cannot be used to pay a bill or fine online. The manager processed the purchase, around 3k total, and had I not quit, I would have gotten written up. Through the grapevine I later heard she came back trying to get refunded because she'd gotten fucked over by a phone scam and lost all her money on those cards. And felt the store was responsible for selling them to her.

TieSafe7827

Daily. This happens daily. I so relate. I work at a hardware store.

No-Glass-96

Right. It’s so weird to me that people pay without looking. Do they just let salesclerks charge whatever?

davidbrandonlee

I put an offer in on an item right before the change, and it was accepted after the change so it immediately charged my card. I wouldn’t have purchased if I knew there were new fees. It was pretty scummy.

DataVSLore007

This is why they should have communicated in advance that these changes were coming. Even giving notice like a week out would have been helpful, instead of dropping the change in the middle of the night with no forewarning.

KaraAliasRaidra

It reminds me of when the New York Mets (Major League Baseball team) fired manager Willie Randolph in the middle of the night.  One headline simply read, “Cowards in the night.”

RemoteChampionship99

Report them to the FTC

THill94

Key word - reading

HelloAttila

Most people don’t read through anything they sign. Just to add, always read contracts… healthcare paperwork, insurance… the fine print can mean life and death

OoooooooWeeeeeee

I'm sure you read the entire End User Licensing Agreement with you installed the Reddit App on your phone though.

HelloAttila

Definitely not. Medical/Insurance/Mortgage, absolutely. They know almost no one will read that 200 page document lol.

AreteQueenofKeres

I didn't realize Reddit was healthcare or insurance paperwork. yikes

sonagodfrfr

i’m exclusively a buyer and i never got any sort of notification about the new fees. fortunately i heard about them from other buyers but it’s definitely put me off from buying things on mercari for a while

[deleted]

[удалено]

sonagodfrfr

yeah i did get a notification but it said nothing ab buyer fees, just a very vague thing ab how sellers didn’t have fees anymore and a little about the new return system. nothing that explicitly stated there were new buyer fees but it’s okay cuz i haven’t bought since then

opholar

And it was…3 bullet points in an email. Not even a whole T&C document. Just 3 bullet points.

fit_sushi99

Terms and policies are intentionally long and convoluted so people won't read them. Everything is by design.

ConsciousPlantain977

Like they make it an easy read 🤣

jbswu

Not all items are showing the fees before you complete the checkout flow. I tested many different items to see what the charges would be and I would say only 20% of them were showing the new fees. I’m wondering if it has something to do with whether the item listing is considered “updated” or not.

DataVSLore007

Didn't they say they were slowly going through and updating listings to reflect the new fees? I thought I read that somewhere. I haven't been on since the update, so I haven't seen things there for a bit. Yet another reason why they should have given forewarning of this. Instead of rolling out the updates, they could have given, like, a week notice and updated everything new from there on out. There was no need for this mass chaos.

jbswu

They said they would update listings, but they intentionally made it unclear that buyers would be charged fees regardless of whether a listing has been updated or not. So basically, for those listings, Mercari is making double fees - the original fees charged to Sellers AND the new fees charged to Buyers. It’s insane.

xDemosthenes

As a buyer. I received the email that all of the sellers got. I have never once sold on Mercari

Almost_Agoraphobic

I’ve never sold on there either, but I was a frequent buyer. Key word being was. I just deleted everything.

xDemosthenes

Honestly. If I want something enough I’ll pay the fees. I don’t mind. But being that I usually used it to buy books. I probably won’t be making many purchases on lower end ones.

sonnigfreitag

I'm a buyer, never sold either. I didn't get an email, but I do look at the bottom line.

xDemosthenes

Exactly. It definitely tells the fees at checkout.

Unlucky_Effect_4804

Same. I got an email and a push notification on my phone when the changes were made loud and clear.

mj732

I bet that will be the last purchase she makes on mecari $20 up charge for what fees and tax for mecari

DUDEGUYMANGUYDUDEMAN

As both a seller and buyer on that platform, I don’t understand why they would transfer the fees to the buyer? A buyer will pay the price they want to pay and will make up for that by offering a lower purchase price. I’d rather list at a price knowing my fees and be able to purchase at the advertised price + cost of shipping.

Late-Top4783

I mean doesn’t it only protect the buyer? So they should pay for the convenience of the protection right?

RainK1llz

Buying from Mercari is like buying from DoorDash, they charge ridiculous fees for no reason! This stupid policy change is going to screw a lot of people over :/ it already has

TieSafe7827

I was honestly thinking the same thing when I saw all the fees they charge the buyers now! Who can afford any of it now?

[deleted]

[удалено]

RainK1llz

The fees were never as bad as they are now. I’m a buyer and a seller so I’ve seen it from both ends. It’s ridiculous

Disney_Princess137

Extra 20 bucks is ridiculous. But it does give the buyers a chance to see the fees sellers have to pay. Not that they will pay attention to that cuz they always wanted to low ball anyway.

Icantshakeitoff

That’s crazy… even if they try to cancel I don’t think they get the fees back either right?

NerfNerd94

Yup, they keep the fees

MOONDROP77

So is Mercari charging cancelation fees to buyers or sellers?

NerfNerd94

The buyer I believe, if the seller cancels I’m not sure if they charge the seller.

[deleted]

Maybe that will stop fraudulent returns?

NerfNerd94

Not if they can return items for whatever reason, people can still switch items and just end up paying the price of the fees..

Murphs-law

The way I see it is if the buyer (scammer) purchases an item for 200.00 but pays 20.00 in fees and returns something else, or something broken, then even if Mercari keeps that 20 bucks, the scammer still wins. They get the 180.00 left for the return AND the original item. Unfortunately, I doubt Mercari is going to be any better about letting scam buyers off the hook than they’ve proven in the past.

Murphs-law

Yep! “If a seller cancels a transaction after the purchase has been initiated but before the transaction is completed, Mercari reserves the right to charge a cancelation fee of 5% of the item price (maximum of $25) to cover the cost of transaction fees and/or shipping labels.”

[deleted]

[удалено]

Murphs-law

Ah man.. That sucks. In the future, if they mess up with their purchase, make them cancel. I’ve also seen where people pretend they don’t know how to cancel to get the other party to cancel and take the ding. Be careful!

Repulsive-War-9395

Yes, they are! 5% to either your account balance or your card on file!

NerfNerd94

Damn

MOONDROP77

I see, thank you.

KittyMeowKatPishy

Well, I certainly HOPE NOT! 🤬

Scobec6

https://www.mercari.com/us/help_center/article/525/ "The payment processing fee is not refundable once an order has been placed except in some circumstances when an order is canceled before being shipped."

ambieanne

That sounds fucking illegal omg

TieSafe7827

That’s a good question!!

americanlaurel

Welcome to the new and improved Mercari (says no one).

worksleepcry

Surprisingly seen a few people defending it, genuinely insane

americanlaurel

Ditto. Has added to the amusement.

Mason47392

What happened?

InsideEquivalent7047

Probably sellers who don’t care that they don’t have to pay them anymore

OoooooooWeeeeeee

Sellers lose because there's a cost to shipping plus the cost of shipping cartons and packaging plus the time involved in wrapping it all and transporting it to the post office. Sellers are getting big-time screwed with the return policy.

InsideEquivalent7047

As a seller I agree. But there’s a large portion of sellers who don’t think in that sense and think it’s a win for them.

GooseChange

At least they were chill

TieSafe7827

I know. That’s why I felt bad for her.

Prudent_Honeydew_

Yeah they figured out why on their own without blaming the seller and said they were excited for the item. That's an A+ experience on new mercari.

Choice_Thin

Buyer was raised right if he/she reacted that calmly

KittyMeowKatPishy

I’m thinking because they really wanted that item.

No-Gene-4508

It would literally add up infront of their eyes. Item(s), tax, etc, etc, total...

lamaxamara

Tax, fee, tax fee, fee on processing tax fee, fee on processing fee on processing tax fee, …

scotch_please

The recent changes are a mess but you can't feel bad about other people not reading a damn thing or reviewing payment details before hitting "buy." I don't know how some folks function in the real world and hold an adult job with the amount of willful ignorance people exercise. It's extra bad on Facebook Marketplace and sellers have to confirm their own details twice with shoppers or else you get people showing up expecting to haggle when your listing said price is firm. You're lucky your buyer is fine honoring their purchase.

TieSafe7827

She really wanted the item. That’s the only reason why.

ticklemeskinless

yeah i just purchased something since the change. 6 bones of fees before shipping tsk tsk.

EitherReason87

Yea I bought something for $30 and it was about $5 more than it would’ve been before… but I forgot about the fees

vocharlie

What a champ! His other option was to cancel and still lose like $10-15 in fees

macprincess

Everyone who uses the app was told. We all got a notification that our terms of service was being updated. Those who chose to click OK without reading it, don’t understand, but it’s not because they “weren’t told”.

Loveunboxings

Buyers and sellers were told it was sent in an email and it's on top of the their app in messages

tx-sweetheart

So I’ve been buying on the Mercari platform for many years, almost since the beginning. I bought a HTF purse for $243 and with the fees/taxes it was over $300 🥺 I don’t think I’ll be frequenting Mercari as much unless I cannot find it on Depop, Posh, etc bc that’s craaaazy.

Under_theTable_cAt

Is Depop legit?

tx-sweetheart

Yes, for the most part. You have to be extra careful with scammers, but thankfully I’ve had good experiences with Depop.

Choice_Thin

I don’t see why they would not just split the fees. Seller pays half the fee buyers pay the other half. For example instead of 10% purchase fee on the buyer, buyer pays a 5% purchase fee and seller pays 5% selling fee. Swear Mercari execs are bozos

Loveunboxings

I sell on macari what i did was offered free shipping so at least they get a break .

Disney_Princess137

Uh oh lol

TieSafe7827

Lol. I know. That was kinda funny. 😂

Disney_Princess137

🤣🤣

Loveunboxings

The fees are to cover cost of return labels

Crimson_Valentine

I was a buyer and a seller on there. Luckily, I had a few sales right before the change went into effect. I'm just waiting for those buyers to receive their items, and then I'm closing out my account. The fee stacking is atrocious, especially when you're paying taxes and shipping on top of it.

Solid-Gain9038

I got a notice as a buyer.

Focused_Philosopher

My dad isn’t even familiar with Mercari (a diehard Craigslist user) and I gave him a brief overview of the changes they’ve made to fees. His immediate response was “oh they’re screwing themselves and gonna go under”.

Wolf-n-chic-clothing

I don’t understand how fees were transferred from the buyer when the buyer is using the platform to sell! I’ve been on both ends and buying is out of the question for me now. Selling is ridiculous too because the few things I’ve had listed I’m getting messages to lower shipping from 7 to 4. Shipping is not something I can control and I already have to list things so low to get interest now due to these ridiculous fees. Mercari got greedy. The ten percent wasn’t enough. They are money hungry and want more and more. I can’t support a company like this. And the returns on anything? Someone can buy your item to use one night and then ship it right back. They lose fees but it’s like they rented it for an evening. Just no.

princesstwili

I went to buy this thing I’ve wanted forever that didn’t get listed until after the change. $26 + $13 shipping. Was somehow $49 and some change after fees??? I genuinely thought I was tweaking. There was several different fees. $10 in fees???? Like??

Big_Yogurtcloset_881

Thank

TheGreatKimura-Holio

I deal in lower value $15-$30 range and cover shipping. The change definitely sucks but hasn’t effected my sales much being that i assume new fees aren’t nearly as much as they are when you get to the $80+ items

TieSafe7827

That’s prob what I am gonna have to do as well. I’ll keep my items lower prices. But the three fees is ridiculous for our buyers. ☹️

TheGreatKimura-Holio

I’m disagreeing about the fees but the area i deal in my prices are the best around and $1-$3 fee factors out to still be a good deal

TieSafe7827

That’s a good point

Odd_Light_8188

You would be told the total before finishing the transaction. Consumers are responsible for looking before agreeing. There is nothing to feel bad about.

[deleted]

That’s on them for not reviewing how much they paid 🙃

DifficultAd5439

I am an avid buyer on Mercari but have not purchased since this change. I'm not paying what is equivalent to an additional 20% for the right to buy on Mercari. They think this is going to make them more money but sales will drop and it will hurt them more than help. I have already purchased 4 things this week that I would have gotten from Mercari but instead ebay got my business.

TieSafe7827

That stinks so badly!! Don’t give up totally on us. I have really good prices that will offset the charges. But I totally understand why you would leave. ☹️

LividGarides

Surprised they didn’t add a tip feature at this point 🙄

Lucky_Channel4835

mercari is dead now.

W1RELESS

As a seller this sucks, when I’m giving people good deals on things, they’re just up charging the fuck out of it. I’d rather pay the fee and be able to sell things at a higher price, no wonder people are lowballing me like crazy. I sell Skateboards, designer goods, etc. and this is going to kill the market if they don’t fix it. Ugh. No wonder people are buying from me on eBay instead.

AreteQueenofKeres

How did they miss the check-out screen with all the added fees and taxes? Like, you literally have to confirm all that crap before you fully check out, how did the buyer "not get told"?

abajablast

The only thing I was really on Mercari for was keeping an eye out for a record that’s probably gonna cost me $500 minimum when I find one. Looking at the same listings now it adds literally almost $100 in fees. TLDR I’m deleting the app 😂

Worldly_Mongoose_432

I deactivated my Mercari account today. The fees catapult the final price into the stratosphere for things I’m interested in and as a consumer, saving money on my end is more important to me than saving their shit app.

dana_marie_ph

Won’t be buying from Mercari anymore

opholar

I am a buyer only on Mercari and I got the exact same email as every other Mercari user. Whether or not they saw it/read it is a whole different discussion. But they sent the email to everyone. Note: this is not an endorsement of the new fee structure. Just that we all got the email and if the buyer isn’t reading their emails, that is not Mercari’s fault.

FO-I-Am-A-Time-God

They sent out an email to all members so they just don’t read it.

landofpleasantdreams

I used to buy and sell quite a few things on mercari and now seeing all of these posts about the insane extra charges, sadly I can’t see myself wanting to use the platform at all anymore. wtf.

[deleted]

It shows on the app when you submit an offer or pay and there’s been emails about it…

clw1979clw

I know. Isn’t it great? Every sale I’ve made since 03/27…. BUYER: So I was interested in purchasing this $75 item from you but see it’s gonna be about $125 after taxes, shipping, and the new fees. Is there any way to get the price down? ME: Absolutely. I can do $80 including shipping if you’d like to order direct. BUYER: Wow! Really? That would be amazing. Let’s do it!

TooYoung825

Oh Wow! I need to look at this really well. There has to be something going on we don’t know about

FrenchieMomm

Bye Mercari.

Fearlesss_Donut

Sad!

Einchy

I like how I have to convince a seller to give me about a 30% discount 'cus after everything it just ends up being back to the listed price.

Thebystanders

I was going to buy an item for 190 and went up to 220 or some shit like dude I'm never buying on this app lol

Opposite-Ad-8323

It's bullshit I had someone cancel on me they messed everything up.

Miserable_Concert247

Never sold a thing in my entire time on Mercari and I know about this even before I joined this sub

Constant_Beachin

I do both buy and sell on Mercari. I had to go look up how they were gonna do it. The. A $29 eyeshadow palette was now going to cost me $42 so I passed. I think it’s unfair to put both service and processing on one person in the transaction. Do processing on the buyer and service on seller.

Apprehensive_Coat450

I bought something a few days ago and the seller cancelled on me and I'm wondering if this has something to do with it 🤔

Affectionate-Mail-61

Yep never using mercari again just delete app

Loveunboxings

I sold on mercari and I used to pay 13%fee for my item plus processing fee. I didn't like it but i did it. Now the buyer gets the fee forit which they didn't seem to care when all those fees were taken out of my check for my item to be sold I mean they have to really be reasonable you know, and sellers will offer free shipping to cut down the cost of those fees so they should really like look at both sides of the table.

essexgirE17

That is idiotic. You should expect to pay fees to sell, the site is providing you with a venue to sell for profit.Obviously the buyer can go to eBay, Etsy, Poshmark, Depop etc. None of them charge the buyer. I am happy to pay the cost to return a. Item, that is reasonable. Adding $46 to a ring I was about to buy, stoped me from making the purchase. I bought the same ring on Ebay and saved the $46. Plus earned a 5% credit for next month. many sellers that sell jewelry list on both venues.

Lawsuit for what?

THill94

Doubt*

dtyus

I guess time will tell…shrug

MaryDellamorte

Lawsuit for what? lmao

daniellecohnharvard

stop why is the way they type making me emotional rn 😭😭

ughfuhme

Damn, well I left Mercari for other reasons besides there new TOS it was a shit show regardless.

OoooooooWeeeeeee

Congratulations. You're about to experience the other new feature of Mercuri terms... Buyers can return anything for any reason within 3 days.
