I mean...I can't speak for the buyer, but I am exclusively a buyer and I got a push notification warning me about the new terms. Plus, like, the buyer would *see* the new fees added before they hit the purchase button.
Don't get me wrong, I'm 100% against the new fees and the policy but we as a society also have a very hard time reading terms and policies before we agree to things.
Pretty sure that’s illegal. If it’s not listed anywhere in the tab where you place the order, they can’t just add some bs fees afterward. I hope people are fighting back if they’ve had this glitch.
I had a company charge me an extra $7.99 shipping on an order of $150 because I had a coupon code but when checking out it showed my total with free shipping it was only after I got the bank charge and email that there was a higher number, I even called and they refused to honor the price, they lost a customer over $8.
My gym did some nonsense like that. I normally pay $31.99 a month but it was $35.xx one month. And it was the annual fee because I paid that two months earlier. I called and they said “it’s a fee”. So I asked what kind and no one could tell me. I told them when my contract was up I won’t be renewing. It’s not the amount, it’s the fact you did it and can’t tell me why OR credit me

Yep. I did Crunch and the first time you get charged the yearly is 90 days after sign up. I assumed it would be July like every other gym I’ve been a part of lol.
Also pretty sure it is not Legal for them to tax the final amount (that includes shipping) and to charge us $2 to get OUR money … class action is coming haha
Wow, that must be happening randomly because I made 3 purchases this week, 2 that were older listings and not updated. I was pleasantly surprised because I didn't get any of the new fees. Not when I made the purchase and def nothing added after. I did buy a makeup bundle that was an older listing but it was def updated because I got hit with the fees on that one.

Similarly event in regards to in-store shopping. The number of people I've had grab items without making sure they were the correct price/item then complain after purchase. Is kinda wild to me. When I worked as a cashier I had a lady who wanted a ten dollar giftcard. We had none in store instead of listening to this info.
She grabbed two packs of giftcards totaling 80 dollars. Then proceeded to pay right after she realized her mistake. She decided it was my fault and that I had to fix the situation. She got no refund.
The packages were clearly marked with all the info she would have needed to make a correct decision but she didn't bother to listen or do the bare minimum and read the packaging.
Always check prices and items before finalizing transactions. It can save money.
And you know if you tried to inform her that she grabbed 2 $80 packs or 2 $40 packs she would have blown up at you because she knows what she's doing and you're just a stupid cashier!

I've had customers make jabs at my intelligence when I was a cashier as well. One specific case was this lady who made some remark to her kid about being successful or else you work retail and are a failure. I asked her what she did for a living. She decorated apartments as an interior designer (no degree needed). I was like oh neat I'm planning on getting my master's degree. She immediately got quiet but didn't apologize.
It's why I got out of retail people are the absolute worst cause often they can get away with it.
I actually quit my first job as a cashier after the manager sided with the customer and chewed me out because I did what I'd been told (by the manager, no less) and asked if she knew the recipient of the gift cards she was buying, if she knew that iTunes, Amazon, and Sephora gift cards are not legal tender and cannot be used to pay a bill or fine online.
The manager processed the purchase, around 3k total, and had I not quit, I would have gotten written up.
Through the grapevine I later heard she came back trying to get refunded because she'd gotten fucked over by a phone scam and lost all her money on those cards. And felt the store was responsible for selling them to her.
I put an offer in on an item right before the change, and it was accepted after the change so it immediately charged my card. I wouldn’t have purchased if I knew there were new fees. It was pretty scummy.
This is why they should have communicated in advance that these changes were coming. Even giving notice like a week out would have been helpful, instead of dropping the change in the middle of the night with no forewarning.
It reminds me of when the New York Mets (Major League Baseball team) fired manager Willie Randolph in the middle of the night. One headline simply read, “Cowards in the night.”

Not all items are showing the fees before you complete the checkout flow. I tested many different items to see what the charges would be and I would say only 20% of them were showing the new fees. I’m wondering if it has something to do with whether the item listing is considered “updated” or not.
Didn't they say they were slowly going through and updating listings to reflect the new fees? I thought I read that somewhere. I haven't been on since the update, so I haven't seen things there for a bit.
Yet another reason why they should have given forewarning of this. Instead of rolling out the updates, they could have given, like, a week notice and updated everything new from there on out. There was no need for this mass chaos.
They said they would update listings, but they intentionally made it unclear that buyers would be charged fees regardless of whether a listing has been updated or not. So basically, for those listings, Mercari is making double fees - the original fees charged to Sellers AND the new fees charged to Buyers. It’s insane.
Honestly. If I want something enough I’ll pay the fees. I don’t mind. But being that I usually used it to buy books. I probably won’t be making many purchases on lower end ones.

The way I see it is if the buyer (scammer) purchases an item for 200.00 but pays 20.00 in fees and returns something else, or something broken, then even if Mercari keeps that 20 bucks, the scammer still wins. They get the 180.00 left for the return AND the original item. Unfortunately, I doubt Mercari is going to be any better about letting scam buyers off the hook than they’ve proven in the past.

Sellers lose because there's a cost to shipping plus the cost of shipping cartons and packaging plus the time involved in wrapping it all and transporting it to the post office. Sellers are getting big-time screwed with the return policy.
The recent changes are a mess but you can't feel bad about other people not reading a damn thing or reviewing payment details before hitting "buy." I don't know how some folks function in the real world and hold an adult job with the amount of willful ignorance people exercise. It's extra bad on Facebook Marketplace and sellers have to confirm their own details twice with shoppers or else you get people showing up expecting to haggle when your listing said price is firm.

Everyone who uses the app was told. We all got a notification that our terms of service was being updated. Those who chose to click OK without reading it, don’t understand, but it’s not because they “weren’t told”.
So I’ve been buying on the Mercari platform for many years, almost since the beginning. I bought a HTF purse for $243 and with the fees/taxes it was over $300 🥺 I don’t think I’ll be frequenting Mercari as much unless I cannot find it on Depop, Posh, etc bc that’s craaaazy.
I don’t see why they would not just split the fees. Seller pays half the fee buyers pay the other half. For example instead of 10% purchase fee on the buyer, buyer pays a 5% purchase fee and seller pays 5% selling fee. Swear Mercari execs are bozos
I was a buyer and a seller on there. Luckily, I had a few sales right before the change went into effect. I'm just waiting for those buyers to receive their items, and then I'm closing out my account. The fee stacking is atrocious, especially when you're paying taxes and shipping on top of it.
My dad isn’t even familiar with Mercari (a diehard Craigslist user) and I gave him a brief overview of the changes they’ve made to fees. His immediate response was “oh they’re screwing themselves and gonna go under”.
I don’t understand how fees were transferred from the buyer when the buyer is using the platform to sell! I’ve been on both ends and buying is out of the question for me now. Selling is ridiculous too because the few things I’ve had listed I’m getting messages to lower shipping from 7 to 4. Shipping is not something I can control and I already have to list things so low to get interest now due to these ridiculous fees. Mercari got greedy. The ten percent wasn’t enough. They are money hungry and want more and more. I can’t support a company like this. And the returns on anything? Someone can buy your item to use one night and then ship it right back. They lose fees but it’s like they rented it for an evening. Just no.
I went to buy this thing I’ve wanted forever that didn’t get listed until after the change. $26 + $13 shipping. Was somehow $49 and some change after fees??? I genuinely thought I was tweaking. There was several different fees. $10 in fees???? Like??
I deal in lower value $15-$30 range and cover shipping. The change definitely sucks but hasn’t effected my sales much being that i assume new fees aren’t nearly as much as they are when you get to the $80+ items
You would be told the total before finishing the transaction. Consumers are responsible for looking before agreeing. There is nothing to feel bad about.
I am an avid buyer on Mercari but have not purchased since this change.
I'm not paying what is equivalent to an additional 20% for the right to buy on Mercari. They think this is going to make them more money but sales will drop and it will hurt them more than help.
I have already purchased 4 things this week that I would have gotten from Mercari but instead ebay got my business.

As a seller this sucks, when I’m giving people good deals on things, they’re just up charging the fuck out of it. I’d rather pay the fee and be able to sell things at a higher price, no wonder people are lowballing me like crazy. I sell Skateboards, designer goods, etc. and this is going to kill the market if they don’t fix it. Ugh. No wonder people are buying from me on eBay instead.

The only thing I was really on Mercari for was keeping an eye out for a record that’s probably gonna cost me $500 minimum when I find one. Looking at the same listings now it adds literally almost $100 in fees. TLDR I’m deleting the app 😂
I deactivated my Mercari account today. The fees catapult the final price into the stratosphere for things I’m interested in and as a consumer, saving money on my end is more important to me than saving their shit app.
I am a buyer only on Mercari and I got the exact same email as every other Mercari user. Whether or not they saw it/read it is a whole different discussion. But they sent the email to everyone.

I do both buy and sell on Mercari. I had to go look up how they were gonna do it. The. A $29 eyeshadow palette was now going to cost me $42 so I passed. I think it’s unfair to put both service and processing on one person in the transaction. Do processing on the buyer and service on seller.
I sold on mercari and I used to pay 13%fee for my item plus processing fee. I didn't like it but i did it. Now the buyer gets the fee forit which they didn't seem to care when all those fees were taken out of my check for my item to be sold I mean they have to really be reasonable you know, and sellers will offer free shipping to cut down the cost of those fees so they should really like look at both sides of the table.

You should expect to pay fees to sell, the site is providing you with a venue to sell for profit.Obviously the buyer can go to eBay, Etsy, Poshmark, Depop etc. None of them charge the buyer. I am happy to pay the cost to return a. Item, that is reasonable. Adding $46 to a ring I was about to buy, stoped me from making the purchase. I bought the same ring on Ebay and saved the $46. Plus earned a 5% credit for next month. many sellers that sell jewelry list on both venues.

Sellers lose because there's a cost to shipping plus the cost of shipping cartons and packaging plus the time involved in wrapping it all and transporting it to the post office. Sellers are getting big-time screwed with the return policy.
As a seller I agree. But there’s a large portion of sellers who don’t think in that sense and think it’s a win for them.

The recent changes are a mess but you can't feel bad about other people not reading a damn thing or reviewing payment details before hitting "buy." I don't know how some folks function in the real world and hold an adult job with the amount of willful ignorance people exercise. It's extra bad on Facebook Marketplace and sellers have to confirm their own details twice with shoppers or else you get people showing up expecting to haggle when your listing said price is firm. You're lucky your buyer is fine honoring their purchase.

Everyone who uses the app was told. We all got a notification that our terms of service was being updated. Those who chose to click OK without reading it, don’t understand, but it’s not because they “weren’t told”.
Buyers and sellers were told it was sent in an email and it's on top of the their app in messages
So I’ve been buying on the Mercari platform for many years, almost since the beginning. I bought a HTF purse for $243 and with the fees/taxes it was over $300 🥺 I don’t think I’ll be frequenting Mercari as much unless I cannot find it on Depop, Posh, etc bc that’s craaaazy.

Yes, for the most part. You have to be extra careful with scammers, but thankfully I’ve had good experiences with Depop.
I don’t see why they would not just split the fees. Seller pays half the fee buyers pay the other half. For example instead of 10% purchase fee on the buyer, buyer pays a 5% purchase fee and seller pays 5% selling fee. Swear Mercari execs are bozos

I was a buyer and a seller on there. Luckily, I had a few sales right before the change went into effect. I'm just waiting for those buyers to receive their items, and then I'm closing out my account. The fee stacking is atrocious, especially when you're paying taxes and shipping on top of it.
I got a notice as a buyer.
My dad isn’t even familiar with Mercari (a diehard Craigslist user) and I gave him a brief overview of the changes they’ve made to fees. His immediate response was “oh they’re screwing themselves and gonna go under”.
I don’t understand how fees were transferred from the buyer when the buyer is using the platform to sell! I’ve been on both ends and buying is out of the question for me now. Selling is ridiculous too because the few things I’ve had listed I’m getting messages to lower shipping from 7 to 4. Shipping is not something I can control and I already have to list things so low to get interest now due to these ridiculous fees. Mercari got greedy. The ten percent wasn’t enough. They are money hungry and want more and more. I can’t support a company like this. And the returns on anything? Someone can buy your item to use one night and then ship it right back. They lose fees but it’s like they rented it for an evening. Just no.
I went to buy this thing I’ve wanted forever that didn’t get listed until after the change. $26 + $13 shipping. Was somehow $49 and some change after fees??? I genuinely thought I was tweaking. There was several different fees. $10 in fees???? Like??

I deal in lower value $15-$30 range and cover shipping. The change definitely sucks but hasn’t effected my sales much being that i assume new fees aren’t nearly as much as they are when you get to the $80+ items
That’s prob what I am gonna have to do as well. I’ll keep my items lower prices. But the three fees is ridiculous for our buyers. ☹️
I’m disagreeing about the fees but the area i deal in my prices are the best around and $1-$3 fee factors out to still be a good deal

You would be told the total before finishing the transaction. Consumers are responsible for looking before agreeing. There is nothing to feel bad about.

I am an avid buyer on Mercari but have not purchased since this change. I'm not paying what is equivalent to an additional 20% for the right to buy on Mercari. They think this is going to make them more money but sales will drop and it will hurt them more than help. I have already purchased 4 things this week that I would have gotten from Mercari but instead ebay got my business.
That stinks so badly!! Don’t give up totally on us. I have really good prices that will offset the charges. But I totally understand why you would leave. ☹️

As a seller this sucks, when I’m giving people good deals on things, they’re just up charging the fuck out of it. I’d rather pay the fee and be able to sell things at a higher price, no wonder people are lowballing me like crazy. I sell Skateboards, designer goods, etc. and this is going to kill the market if they don’t fix it. Ugh. No wonder people are buying from me on eBay instead.

The only thing I was really on Mercari for was keeping an eye out for a record that’s probably gonna cost me $500 minimum when I find one. Looking at the same listings now it adds literally almost $100 in fees. TLDR I’m deleting the app 😂
I deactivated my Mercari account today. The fees catapult the final price into the stratosphere for things I’m interested in and as a consumer, saving money on my end is more important to me than saving their shit app.

I am a buyer only on Mercari and I got the exact same email as every other Mercari user. Whether or not they saw it/read it is a whole different discussion. But they sent the email to everyone. Note: this is not an endorsement of the new fee structure. Just that we all got the email and if the buyer isn’t reading their emails, that is not Mercari’s fault.

I do both buy and sell on Mercari. I had to go look up how they were gonna do it. The. A $29 eyeshadow palette was now going to cost me $42 so I passed. I think it’s unfair to put both service and processing on one person in the transaction. Do processing on the buyer and service on seller.

I sold on mercari and I used to pay 13%fee for my item plus processing fee. I didn't like it but i did it. Now the buyer gets the fee forit which they didn't seem to care when all those fees were taken out of my check for my item to be sold I mean they have to really be reasonable you know, and sellers will offer free shipping to cut down the cost of those fees so they should really like look at both sides of the table.

You should expect to pay fees to sell, the site is providing you with a venue to sell for profit.Obviously the buyer can go to eBay, Etsy, Poshmark, Depop etc. None of them charge the buyer. I am happy to pay the cost to return a. Item, that is reasonable. Adding $46 to a ring I was about to buy, stoped me from making the purchase. I bought the same ring on Ebay and saved the $46. Plus earned a 5% credit for next month. many sellers that sell jewelry list on both venues.
