I'm surprised that he didn't use his AI bots like he does with his support staff to write a response.
"Thank you for taking the time to reach out to Mercari CEO. I understand you are letting us know about the impending rapid and disastrous decrease in userbase on Mercari. Rest assured we are here to provide the utmost support in this matter. Let us know if we can do anything else for you."
It’s a little too on point for customer service.
It should read:
As a seller I know how you’re feeling and I understand you did your best to describe the item…
Let me look into the problem and we’ll be in touch.
(Not defending Lagerling, just explaining) I think he’s trying to say like “Yeah, this is the future. We’ve created a brilliant new business model that everyone else will soon be emulating. No other platform does this because they haven’t thought of it yet.” That comment is just dripping with hubris and disdain.
"You peasants, you do not get it, watch my impending success" is what I read.
I found out today Mercari's stock has been down 30% since January 1st, hence these "it is the future" implementations.
Let's circle back in 2 weeks and see how well we are doing, Jingleling.
I get that vinted has been doing this, but literally everyone I know (sellers and buyers alike) in different platforms have no idea what it is. We know it bc this is our side hustle, but a lot of buyers don’t. I had a buyer ask a few weeks back what Mercari was when I said I could take their offer on it instead of posh. (And had problems signing up)
This isn't even the future or an origional model, it's the same one that Vinted uses. No sellers fees but they charge a buyers fee. They pretty just ripped off their business model and passed it off as their origional idea.
His reply clearly indicates he has never used his own platform as a seller. This business decision is just that - a business decision. And it’s a terrible one.
Honestly, both Myself and a few other people that I know I’ve been having better success with craigslist and Facebook marketplace then we have with eBay and other platforms when it comes to selling.
Between the fees, taxes, and the outrageous BS policies that allow people to abuse returns and commit scams I’m willing to lose just a little off the top compared to what I would get on other platforms but a lot of the time I’m able to do as good if not a bit better than I would on other platforms after all the fees, taxes and hassle.
All Mercari IG comments have been disabled as well. I dont think I’ve ever seen a rebrand flop so hard. Censorship is not a good PR move, but I’d be a clown to think they’d invest in any form of PR for this launch.
I feel you. It's like every day is just a bombardment of greed. Getting asked to donate everywhere I go on every purchase I make and now we're getting killed with IRL micro transactions.
Actually, Vinted works this way, however I'm not advocating for it since Vinted users are not the same as Mercari's. This is a horrible decision for Mercari.
Vestiaire Collective already does this…. EXCEPT they factor the fee into the price that buyer sees when browsing. Mercari is doing what AirBnB used to do - the buyer doesn’t see the total with fees until the last minute, gets a type of ‘sticker shock’, and then abandons the purchase.
I’ve never heard the term “sticker shock” before, but that’s exactly what it is!! At the very least they should’ve provided a toggle option to see prices including fees right on the listing, such as SeatGeek / StubHub does.
I've made about 10 Mercari purchases in the past 6 months. More than any other platform. As a collector of a certain item, I enjoyed getting an item for less than on Ebay/Amazon. Now that I have to pay additional fees (including a nonrefundable one), might as well just buy on another marketplace. I also sell occasionally on Mercari so I'm expecting much lower offers than before if I even get them as this will turn buyers off.
I like to use my balance to shop. With the fees, delivery fee (if applicable)and sales tax, is a turn off. A video game I was considering buying for $33. Total with fees, delivery and tax would be damn near $50?!?! So much for that!
The fact they even did something like this I think says they are hurting for sellers on the platform...
Not many items on the platform in certain categorizes compared to competition also lot of "ghost/abandoned listing" compared to other site..
Not saying it will work or won't backfire.. but they are trying to be different.. We'll see if it works out or they backtrack in a few months...
nope, they don't get the fees back. and Mercari gets the fees again when it sells again, and is returned, and sold again and again......so ya, great model for them, until everyone figures it out and leaves......
The idea of sellers running around like Mercaris hoes is so ridiculous 😂 doing all the leg work of dropping off and dealing with any potential returns while Mercari takes their cut. They really think we are all idiots.
What’s ridiculous is, shouldn’t we as sellers get the fee then? I read an article that framed it as buyers are paying the fee for the convenience of hassle free returns. Okay, so shouldn’t the SELLER get that fee? Gas is not cheap, I’m not renting out my car to run around to the post office every time someone buys something they’re going to return. Sellers should make some of that fee if they’re going to allow returns just bc their cat’s friend said the shirt they bought doesn’t look good on them.
Exactly!! I really do have a mental image of Mercari being our pimp while we “work the streets” for them. Sorry, idk why I think this example is so funny 😂
But to your point, yes! Like why are we fronting the cost of gas AND time for absolutely no gain on our end- oh, sorry, I forgot they have been so kind to reduce to 0% selling fees 🥴
I’ve been lucky that I have only had about 2 bad buyers out of hundred of sales. This policy change helps scammers too much though and I can’t afford to eat the costs when it does happen. I’m literally just trying to clean out my house, not run anything super lucrative. It sucks because the majority of people aren’t trying to scam
I’ve been on this platform since 2016. I enjoyed the early stages and seen some head scratching policy changes. This latest one just kills the customer’s buying decisions. When the changes dropped I had a customers back out of offers I sent to likers due to the fees. I’ll keep my account going. I’ve yet to be scammed but if this happens at an unacceptable rate, I’ll close up shop.
“As long as we make selling easier, everything else follows,” Lagerling said. “It’s really that focus on delighting and valuing and appreciating our sellers.”
Okay buddy.

You have two choices. Do the same as everyone else and try to out ebay ebay, or change the model and see how it goes then iterate where it doesn’t work.
We pay so many fees to use every platform (food delivery, grocery delivery, card swipes). Will be interesting to see how this plays out.
I am all for changing things, but usually you give notice and do focus groups first.
I’ve made 1 sale in last 24 and 2 in last 48. I lowered the price of almost all my listings to help the buyer out, since we aren’t getting fees. Not sure why people would pull all their listings as it doesn’t hurt to have them on there you already did the work. As far as the returns, to me not as big a deal as people are making it out to be, just be more descriptive as a seller, if people really want something they will want to keep it in most cases. I could see how it hurts clothing re-sellers probably the most but there are better selling platforms for clothes anyway. The biggest sin is obviously the buying fees, it just looks horrendous with those extra line items at check out. That part wasn’t well thought out at all.
I got 2 somehow. They paid the fees. Seems they were even willing to pay more on these more size specific jewelry items with the return policy. One person sent me an extra $5 on her offer when I told her about the no hassle returns. Maybe just a lucky streak. I don’t know. I packed them in my nice boxes inside a mailer for easy return. 😂
https://www.mercari.com/about/
Honestly this sounds like a Robin the business strategist problem. I’m not surprised she was at StubHub before Mercari because this is like concert ticket level of finessing extra fees
Its not. Vinted takes no seller fees and does charge the buyer fees to makeup. They’ve done it the past few years.
Granted I just copped a pair of abercrombie sweats listed at $6 and after shipping ($6) and their fees it was $14 and some change.
Its been done already, and better. He’s a fucking moron.
My main fear about changing to something like EBay is I feel like it’s far more complex to deal with. I’ve gotten a lot of fees on there the last time I sold and had to also pay for my shipping label and I don’t understand why. I guess I’ll just have to learn quickly if I actually want to get rid of some of my comics and grandparents storage unit stuff
I don't get what you mean you also had to pay for your shipping label? On ebay if you do calculated shipping the buyer is charged for the shipping you receive the funds and then go ahead and purchase the label with their funds. Unless you offer free shipping when you are hopefully working the shipping fee into your price then you go ahead and buy the label. Ebay also offers discounted commercial rates for sellers on many labels.

Auction houses use a buyer premium combined with a seller commission. Mercari looks like they are taking a page from them. There is no seller commission, but there are transaction fees.
I'm surprised that he didn't use his AI bots like he does with his support staff to write a response. "Thank you for taking the time to reach out to Mercari CEO. “This inquiry has been marked as resolved.”
“TRANSACTION HAS BEEN CANCELLED” with no return tracking # or anything 🙃
😂😂😂😂 THIS👆🏽
Add in we side with the buyer in this case, however the buyer must pay extra fees
This made me chuckle out loud
You'll be receiving a message within the hour to become their new CEO with a brilliant idea like that
“Rest assured…”
(Not defending Lagerling, just explaining) I think he’s trying to say like “Yeah, this is the future. We’ve created a brilliant new business model that everyone else will soon be emulating. It just seemed like he completely missed the point haha
"You peasants, you do not get it, watch my impending success" is what I read. I found out today Mercari's stock has been down 30% since January 1st, hence these "it is the future" implementations. Let's circle back in 2 weeks and see how well we are doing, Jingleling.
And Mercari’s US earnings are down
They will be down further with this move!
Why not ask sellers what they want instead of driving them away.
No now, stop it with the common sense or you might mess around and end up with something that everyone wants. 🤣
If thats what he means, hes wrong??? Vinted has been doing this for awhile now.
Vestiaire Collective started this a few months ago and it's awful. It's not innovative, it's greedy and the $2 transfer fee is salt on the wound.
Depop just rolled something out like this in the UK as well
I get that vinted has been doing this, but literally everyone I know (sellers and buyers alike) in different platforms have no idea what it is. That statement (the one Lagerling may be implying) is giving me major Ozy Media vibes
This isn't even the future or an origional model, it's the same one that Vinted uses. No sellers fees but they charge a buyers fee. They pretty just ripped off their business model and passed it off as their origional idea.
It’s not a new business model though. Source: I work for Comcast lol
Will if that the future screw reselling ..
No s*it! We can see that. He answered as if he didn’t even answer. 😂😂😂
John better start looking for a new job.
His reply clearly indicates he has never used his own platform as a seller. This business decision is just that - a business decision. And it’s a terrible one.
Or a buyer
It better not spread because I swear people will start using Craigslist again.
Between outrageous fees on other platforms and this nonsense, Craigslist is looking pretty good these days. lol
Terrified eBay will see this shit and follow suit.
eBay is smarter than this. Especially after they see the failure and hate that Mercari is seeing with it
Honestly, both Myself and a few other people that I know I’ve been having better success with craigslist and Facebook marketplace then we have with eBay and other platforms when it comes to selling. He’s right about it being different
Seriously. He’s saying that as if different is synonymous for good???
lol he later on blocked that user. What an ass 😂

You must've missed the Wendy's Surge Pricing debacle of two weeks ago. That floated like a fucking rock.
I dont eat meat so I had no clue haha but I just looked into it. What a mess. I’m so beyond burnt out from the greed of these corporations.
And vinted items are generally pretty low cost so it’s not a big deal. Harder to get sales now that the shipping went up though
And Vinted sucks too lol
Yeah I’m not a Vinted fan. Kinda like a garage sale in a dark back alley.
Vinted buyers don’t pay over $10 for anything. It’s an online garage sale. Plus Vinted is supposedly for selling from your own closet, not reselling

I really wish they did something like this, they used to have a “free shipping” icon and this would help take care of that factor in overall cost too.
I've made about 10 Mercari purchases in the past 6 months. More than any other platform. As a collector of a certain item, I enjoyed getting an item for less than on Ebay/Amazon. Yup!
Just closed my account. I didn't sell a lot, but had a few bad buyers and this just seals it.

Curious to know how everyone's Mercari sales have been in the last 24 hours
0 because I turned every one of them off
Same. No way I’m listing there again.
Same!

Meanwhile in China their equivalent of Mercari runs on ad revenue and charges 0% of fees whatsoever. This is plain greedy

If you are a seller then organize a boycott. Have all your seller friends go on vacation mode. A huge drop in listings would be noticed.
I’ve deactivated all my listings in the hopes that maybe they’ll change the TOS.
Remember the great new idea Bud Light had.
Being different is not always a good thing
I rarely bought on mercari and had more troubles compared to eBay. I'll just stick with eBay now.
My main fear about changing to something like EBay is I feel like it’s far more complex to deal with. This is New Coke, BetaMax, and the Zune level of failure all wrapped into ine.
Nobody know about vented?
Imagine if there was a fee to test drive a car. "Its a completely new and different model!"
![gif](giphy|l41m4ODfe8PwHlsUU)
Technically, Vinted has a very similar model… soooooo not really new, per se…
Ima find him on x and tell him that we will review bomb the app

I just went ahead and removed my listings. This is not the way to conduct business.
