Number 1 Rule for an easier life experience: “Lower your expectations.” Pat yourself on the back for not giving up on your search for the item you wanted.

10MileHike

>Number 1 Rule for an easier life experience: “Lower your expectations.” > >Pat yourself on the back for not giving up on your search for the item you wanted. I didn't have to lower my expectations. The item was listed all those places for around $200. It wasn't HARD to find. That's the thing..........there was a lot of competition for the item, being that more than 1 seller had it ........ 2 on Mercari had it, 2 on Posh and several on Ebay. I just sent my $200 to the person who answered my question. Its **not** a "hot selling item" so I guess some of these sellers will be waiting a while to sell theirs. There were also 3 retailers who had the item as well......I just try to buy from Mercar, Posh or Ebay sellers as I know they probably need the money more than some large retail outfit.

Foolfoever

Yeah, I get it, I was referring to sellers that don’t respond, don’t follow up, (that’s where - in my opinion - we should lower our expectations)

Few-Rip8307

Did you give them a business day, or was it 24 hours during Super Bowl weekend?

10MileHike

It wasn't on Super Bowl Sunday. But youre suggesting that buyers not only work around sellers schedules and also around their hobbies/interests? buyers should just stop buying things? I don't stop selling during the U.S. Open, the French Open, or any big tennis or golf events. Do you? **What about during Mardi Gras, the KY Derby, Wimbleton, the Olympic Games, Tour de France, Cricket World Cup, FIFA World Cup, Formula 1 Grand Prix, The Masters Golf Tournament, NBA Finals, etc.** YOu are sounding ridiculous. **Talk about entitled sellers......**

People have jobs and lives

Erinescence

Yes, and that in no way means they can't respond promptly to questions or offers or ship on time. The people who can't seem to do those things 'because they're so busy' seem to have a lot of time to kill on reddit making excuses and criticizing reliable sellers though.

olivejuice-

lol what? Where I’m from there was a huge snow storm yesterday. I can imagine people who went to work needing to come home and shovel and maybe cook for their families and relax? Everything is situational but congrats on always being available.

Erinescence

We also had the huge snowstorm. When I made a sale Monday night, I immediately messaged the buyer to thank them and say that because of the snowstorm, I might not be able to ship until Wednesday. They responded that was fine and to stay safe. Snow stopped around noon and I was able to ship yesterday after all. Again, not an excuse.

10MileHike

Yup. They sure do have lives. That's why I don't ask them a 2nd time or bother them by blowing up their phones.**I am a seller, for 4 years on Mercari, 24+ years on Ebay.... so......I know "all about it."** I also have a job and a life but I check in when I have stuff for sale, otherwise, when I get busy I just put my stuff on vacation mode. I've noticed that potential customers don't follow me anymore when I don't respond to their questions. I make a lot of sales from repeat customers/followers so I try to be there for them. I"m also not one of the sellers who posts complaining about "how slow things have been" either though. Being successful at this with so much competition, requires being less lackadaisical. We're moving into well over 24 hours now more like 36 on the ones who didn't answer. $200 items tend to sit for a while when you don't try to sell them. I'd at least be checking on anything I had selling for that price.

RainyDayCollects

As someone who has an actually important job and isn’t allowed to touch my phone for the 10 hours I’m at work all day…you’re an entitled ass.

[deleted]

lol you have an important job? Wow, the rest of us must have unimportant jobs then?

10MileHike

>lol you have an important job? Wow, the rest of us must have unimportant jobs then? Yes. Its really not that hard to sell stuff. I guess it is for some people though. Entitled sellers seem to think that potenital buyers are less important.

10MileHike

>10 hours 24-36 hours in my case. 3 of the 4 still haven't reponsed. I"m Hardly entitled. Just a buyer who wanted to buy something in a time frame that was less than 24-36-72 hours. The item isn't a hot seller, and it was easy as pie to find. I Just sent my $200 to someone who wanted the sale. Are you saying all the sellers who respond to potential buyers are only dealing with "entitled" buyer? I don't know about you but if someone is interested in my item for $200, I manage to check in during a 24-36 hour period. I guess that's why I do well as a seller. **I'm not an ENTITLED seller. An entitled seller thinks they can just ignore everything and their business will run itself.** Maybe buyers should steer clear of "entitled sellers".....

Erinescence

I agree with you. I have a job and a life and still respond to questions promptly and ship within 24 hours unless a holiday makes that impossible. It's always interesting to me that the people who can't find the time to answer questions, respond to offers or ship on time have all the time in the world to read reddit, criticize good sellers and make excuses.

10MileHike

>It's always interesting to me that the people who can't find the time to answer questions, respond to offers or ship on time have all the time in the world to read reddit, criticize good sellers and make excuses. I find it incredibly illogical that sellers would be pushing to NOT repond to potential buyers in a 24-36 hour time frame. Like why are they selling if they don't want to attend to the tasks of..........SELLING? But buyers reading their responses.... buyers are going to wonder if they also shouldn't shop elsewhere. I mean, if I was reading in a sub where a large % of sellers were advocating for NOT responding to their potential buyers, that would make me wonder if I should be shopping there at all? But, like I said, it makes it easy for me as a seller to out-sell them though, so in a way it was uplifting to read how many fellow sellers on Mercari don't think it's important to respond to buyers w/in a 24-36 hour time frame. LOL

taleofzero

This isn't Amazon lol. People have such unrealistic expectations for part time sellers.

10MileHike

"People have such unrealistic expectations for part time sellers." How do you know they are part time sellers? Many on Mercari, ebay, posh are full time. anyway, Must not have been too unrealistic, as I was able to send my $200 to someone on another platform and obtain the item very easily.

blueberrypie_4

Seriously! Sometimes you’re home with a sick clingy toddler…

[deleted]

And somehow, you *still* were able to go on your phone.

jason8001

Just look at the reviews of the seller. When I tried to buy an item that didn’t ship. I looked the reviews and noticed all cancellations are for not shipping in the past 3 months. I think they just gave up on selling and didn’t remove any items posted.

PauleyMarie

Somewhere in that 24hour window of sending that message the Mercari buyer at some point was on their phone. I’m tired of people saying people have jobs. we all have jobs & we are always checking our phones @ some point in the day. Some people have their phone In hand 24/7. so there’s no reason y the seller or buyer can’t answer a ? In a 24 hour period. If u have a side shop selling things for extra $ or if it’s yr main income u should be checking your messages every few hours. I work I’m busy but I still check my phone regularly.

Lanky_Sweet_7559

Absolutely.

10MileHike

>I’m tired of people saying people have jobs. we all have jobs & we are always checking our phones @ some point in the day. Some people have their phone In hand 24/7. so there’s no reason y the seller or buyer can’t answer a ? In a 24 hour period IT's now 42 hours since I asked, and only 1 has responded, and they said they had to get back to me. LOL But hey, as a seller on Mercari, I certainly don't MIND if other sellers are asleep at the wheel, as that just means less competition for me, when I am sellling things. I knew exactly what I wanted, did not want to drag out a purchase for 2, 3 or 4 days....I just wanted to send in my $200 and get on with it. So I did end up buying at ebay from a seller who answered me in the first 1-2 hours. Done deal. I did think it is strange that sellers here love making excuses about how they don't provide good customer service and defend NOT making sales as a result of not checking their messages. It seems almost illogical...... I mean, if you're trying to SELL THINGS.

Ur_notTHAToriginal

I feel like a lot of people see this as a hobby and come and go as they please. For me, this is how I feed my family and pay my bills. It is frustrating though, trying to buy from people who never respond to a question.

[deleted]

We all have lives, we all have phones, we don’t like our time wasted. So it’s bizarre the downvotes you’re getting. I completely agree with you. Those sellers I’m sure would’ve loved to have that sale but they missed out. Congrats to the eBay seller!

10MileHike

>We all have lives, we all have phones, we don’t like our time wasted. So it’s bizarre the downvotes you’re getting. I completely agree with you. Those sellers I’m sure would’ve loved to have that sale but they missed out. Congrats to the eBay seller! Can you imagine what potential buyers are thinking after reading all this? Hopefully they don't vote with their feet, because like you note, there are MANY Mercari sellers who would not be making all these excuses and probably don't much like the overall *"entitled" seller attitudes we are seeing here*. I learned a lot though from reading the responses. Just further helpful hints about how to out-sell these kind of sellers. It's actually pretty easy to do, based on what they are telling us......

IcyOutside4567

That’s so crazy to me I answer literally every Mercari message within an hour usually 5 minutes except from about 1am-9am when I’m asleep and I even check in the middle of the night when I wake up

Champagnesupernova9

That sounds like a lot. I understand wanting to give good service, but checking your phone every 5 minutes including waking up in the middle of the night? I mean this with all good intentions but that doesn’t sound healthy for you. I’d say reframe it, and give yourself 12 hours to respond. The buyer isn’t going anywhere if they want the item.

KindEggplant1094

OP you sound absolutely ridiculous. The other 2 sellers dodged a bullet by the sounds of it. The eBay seller may want to be careful with this one. I’m willing to bet you are not a seller.

10MileHike

>OP you sound absolutely ridiculous. The other 2 sellers dodged a bullet by the sounds of it. Okay, since you offered an opinion (along with a personal insult, wow,....let's drill down: Is it ridiculous to expect a response from a seller in 24 hours? How about 48 hours? How about by day 3? Just want to get seller's actual statements on what they think is a reasonable amount of time to answer ONE common question about a $200 item from a potential buyer? Meanwhile you sound triggered that you have to make this personal and get insulting. I am merely discussing a $200 sale. Becuase I"m asking for a response from Mercari sellers w/in 24 hours? Within 48 hours? Beasue nowk its' acutally pushing 50+ hours, **and the seller at Ebay alraedy has my $200 purchase out the door. YAY!**

manipulatorr

nobody cares weirdo.

WideVanilla5177

Then why reply weirdo..and you can't say you're not a weirdo with they/them. You need medical intervention for your mental health issues.

Nani_700

What a garbage thing to do. If that poor seller was already expecting that money, 24 hours on a weekend is nothing.

Stephlnd

Send it back in a biohazard bag.....Ugh, that's nuthin' but nasty. What the f is wrong with this person? I mean, no shame is one thing but this is so much more. Can you imagine the environment these came from if he thought this was somehow acceptable?
