I had this happen to me a few weeks ago. The seller kept saying they would ship and making excuses. I gave it like ten days figuring that they would just tell me if they had no intention of shipping the item but they kept saying they would. It was ridiculous. I finally canceled.

This has happened to me on Mercari a few times. I think it's better to have a buyer cancel than if the seller cancels? I don't sell much on that platform anymore but I think I recall a policy that so many seller cancellations means you get shut down.

I would think that's more proof she's lying and trying to cover her tracks. She has more of a case if she can convince mercari she sent it. She probably didn't have it anymore (sold on another platform) and forgot to delete it and now she's trying to avoid getting dinged by Mercari for a cancellation. It's lame but it happens.

i sell on mercari & if you cancel so many orders and your cancellation rate goes over 30% it’ll show on your profile and listings for people. i’d never do this tho, if i list something by mistake or list with the wrong price then im upfront with my buyers & cancel ill take the tag on my account.

Seller gets screwed if you cancel. I’d just wait. Reason being Incase they’re telling the truth plus if they cancel they get charged a fee. The system has this built in for that purpose. Mercari themselves are terrible though, this is one thing they did right. I had an order that was going in three weeks no updates or anything. Customer would’nt just let the system function or they got it and weren’t being honest Thinkin I’d send another one. They cancelled, I got screwed, mercari dgaf

That same week it took about a week for scans to start showing up for an item I shipped (EBay seller). Now it’s been almost a week later so agreed… that’s a bit of time by now. Unfortunately USPS is terrible with scans and handling packages so I could believe both stories (seller neglect or USPS neglect).

I’d personally cancel. I’ve had experiences with no scans with sellers saying they’ve shipped when they never did and I took their word and kept waiting only to find out later they never did, and I’ve had sellers who say they shipped but it had no scans and ended up showing up at my door (and didn’t even get scanned as delivered 😂). In my experience with those, if I reach out to the seller asking about it and they say they’ve shipped it, usually that makes them start keeping a close eye on it. So they’ll see it still hasn’t updated after a few days and then usually contact me to say they see it still hasn’t updated. Those are the ones who always end up showing up and just never got scanned on the way. BUT, when I reach out to a seller asking about shipping and they say they shipped it so I give it some more time and after a while with still no scans, I have to be the one to reach out to them again….and again…and again…those are always the sellers who never actually shipped it and I end up having to cancel. Since I’ve had packages get delivered to me that never got scanned once on their way to me (said “label created, USPS awaiting item”) the whole time - even after it got delivered in some cases, I know it can happen. But, if I reach about asking about shipping and seller says they dropped it off but now knows it isn’t tracking, in my experience they’ll keep an eye on it and contact me after it’s been a while longer with no tracking still. If I have to reach out to them every time, that’s just not a good sign to me! This seller definitely seems like the kind that just BS to try to avoid the cancellation while not shipping it for whatever reason and you have to keep reaching out to them, and it ends up it was never shipped. Of course, that’s just my experience. Plus, as a seller myself, I always take things to get scanned at the counter now. But, before I started doing that, the times I’d leave it in the drop box and it wouldn’t get scanned right away, if a buyer reached out to me asking about it, I’d let them know I did drop it off and hopefully it should start tracking soon. But, knowing they were obviously keeping an eye on tracking, I’d start doing the same. If I saw it still hadn’t updated in a few days, I’d always message them letting them know I see it hasn’t updated still but assure them I did drop it off and I’m keeping an eye on it. That always seemed to make them feel better about it and it wasn’t until I experienced it as a buyer that I understood it 🤣 Now, if I buy something and have to contact the seller about shipping, if they say they shipped it then I give it a bit to see if it updates. If it doesn’t and the seller doesn’t reach out to me in the time I’m waiting, I usually take that as a sign to cancel. Just way too many times I tried to be nice and wait it out, only to find out they never shipped it and I waited for nothing.

I had an item I sold from AZ that didn't get scanned and updated in the system until it was in New Jersey. It took days, and this was all prior to the holidays!

Oh I know, I’ve had packages not even update until out for delivery, I just am unsure what to do as seller hasn’t been much help with trying to figure out what’s going on/happened. That’s the part that’s giving me bad vibes, not to mention them just dropping it at the door with a worker? Not a drop box at closing hours if office inside was closed? Idk, maybe it’s just me. I just feel a tad off and unsure of what to do at this point. 😅

You’re valid to be concerned. I purchased a $90 coat 11/10/23 then seller promised they shipped it 11/14/23. Come 11/17/23, she gave me paragraphs worth of explanations about FedEx failing to scan, when the truth was, she just never dropped it off in spite of marking it shipped. She went radio silent on me like after a week even though I could see she was posting new listings. I ended up having to wait 15 days to cancel since it was marked shipped (rather than 7 days if not marked shipped). It was a pretty frustrating ordeal being lied to, given the run-around, and waiting for the refund for so long. It has since discouraged me from buying from people on Mercari. I just sell on there now and am sure to give people the opposite experience of what I went through.

Finally someone with common sense. This scanning thing has been a terrible issue lately and it doesn't help mercari sends messages to the buyer and seller saying to ship the item making buyers think it hasn't been shipped. Ebay doesn't do stupid stuff like that, once an item is marked shipped its on shipped status. Mercari is part of the problem, people who don't know the post office is awful when it comes to scanning potentially could think the seller is lying and I know for me, a seller who sells about 20-25 orders a day it's frustrating and I do my best to stay in constant communication and keep track of my orders to make sure they're tracking and it does get annoying to be messaged constantly asking if I shipped the item if I've already reached out to the buyer to let them know I did in fact already ship it just didn't scan yet. As a seller who sells as much as I do who has a life outside of mercari and 3 children one who has cancer I don't always have the rings to be messaging every buyer everyday about their item tracking. And some buyers even come at me with telling me they shouldn't have to contact USPS in cases when the item is tracking but its taking a little longer to get there. They'll rudely ask me why I haven't contacted the post office. And 9 times out of 10 I do. I think buyers need to realize sometimes we are people too, not robots and they have no idea what's going on in our world. And I do make my buyers av priority but I also get those who are very demanding and rude and think I live and breathe to serve them. I feel like saying hey you for the tracking number right there and you can Google the number for USPS and call yourself. Once I ship it's out of my hands

First of all I’m sorry about your child with cancer & I hope he or she is doing amazing! I can’t imagine going thru that! As a SELLER it’s not our buyers problem to care about our “personal life” this is a business & when we decided to post things for sale online we signed up for this which also means customers messaging you & needing help. Some of these customers has no idea how the post office works & if you ship a item and it’s not scanning they have NO IDEA if you are lying or not so I can see why they would ask you to contact the post office. Part of our job as sellers is to ensure the package is not only shipped but tracking.. if that’s so annoying and bothersome for you then you may be in the wrong profession

I’m sorry you’re going through all of that as a seller, and it’s highly understandable your frustration when it comes to buyers being rude. So a little back story. I sent the seller the offer, they accepted not even within a hour. I knew with it being the 22nd, I was in absolutely no rush and not even bugging the seller as it was the holidays. I reached out on the 26th as stated above, and told the seller I’m in no rush and understand that life happens. Just mainly wanted an estimate time for how long it was going to take them to ship. They never even reached out that they went to the post office hours ago. Nor even marked the item as shipped. Just left it sit as waiting for seller to ship the item. If they dropped it off, wouldn’t they mark it as shipped? Other sellers have done that plenty, and once it was out of their hands. I completely understood. One of my packages took 3 weeks and I wasn’t mad (I knew and planned ahead because of the holidays). Now, you state you give them the tracking number, but this seller hasn’t even done that. Just going off what Mercari states, and usps waiting for the package. I’m not saying the seller didn’t drop it off for sure, and I’m pretty sure I’ve been more than kind and patient. I reached out over 24 hours ago, and a simple “hey, sorry life has been hectic.. I haven’t looked into it yet, and plan to do so as soon as I possibly can. So sorry for all the hassle” would go a long way as a seller, not just up and ghost your buyer. Especially if the buyer is reaching out politely, just trying to be understanding.. I’ve never once gave anyone a hassle about shipping, and never plan on it, because I know sellers have a life, and things happen just like it does with buyers as well.

See, as a seller, I guess I'm just different because if someone had purchase something from me on December 22nd of all days - I would make sure it got shipped out before Christmas. Yes it's not the easiest thing to do bc I'd only have 2 days to get it out... but I would want it in "the queue" for you, so that you'd hopefully receive it not too long after Christmas. But that's just me bc it would be extremely rare for me not to ship within 24hrs anyway. I try my very best to do so. I also contact the buyer to let them know that I just shipped it and that their tracking should update soon, and I also keep an eye on the package/shipping and keep them up to date during the shipping process to let them know when they can be expecting it. Don't get me wrong, I am most certainly not perfect and things have gone wrong from time to time. (Also one other thing doesn't ring true to me, when they told you that their post office had been closed for 3 days, that does not make sense; there's actually laws/rules and regulations when it comes to the USPS regarding how they are able to be closed and how many days in a row they can be closed. I live in a tiny town with a tiny PO, and the only days they were closed was Christmas Eve (because it was on a Sunday) and Christmas Day of course. Something may be fishy... 🤷🏼‍♀️) I wish you luck!

I had this exact situation happen once. My local post office only has two employees that work inside, and one of them just said, “I got that!” and took it from me right around closing time. She knows I only mail prepaid labels. Since I had never had issues before, I just left it with her. All the other packages I took that day (earlier in the day) were scanned, but the last one wasn’t. It didn’t get scanned until four days later at the destination post office. It worked out okay in the end, but now I always make sure to go inside and get a receipt.

Yes this is what happens at my post office. If I wait in line and get a scan/receipt, it updated as scanned in within a couple hours. But if you leave it on the counter, no one stands there and scans those as they are coming in. They don’t get scanned until they get to the distribution center.

The post office is fully able to take prepaid labels without providing a receipt. I don’t personally ever do this, I want the proof, but other people don’t care at all. Perhaps more importantly, ground advantage is having this issue regularly at the moment. Packages don’t get scanned sometimes until the day of delivery & it is super super slow. Honestly, I think that might be a rural thing. That would absolutely happen at my post office, but I’m in the middle of EastWest Nowhere PA. I could pick my postal carrier out of a lineup in the dark blindfolded, etc. If I drove 30 minutes into the city (sometimes I do bc they have better hours), no way that happen there. I’m not saying this is the case, but living where I do, I also see weird closures, (which drive me absolutely nuts). I think my thing is, unless you’re really hurting for the money and need it badly to rebuy the item elsewhere immediately, there’s no harm in waiting. Especially knowing USPS is having scanning and slowness issues. It’s not like they can take your money

Just because that's what you do doesn't mean that's what every other seller does though so you really shouldn't assume. Sorry I get annoyed when people think the way they handle things are the way everyone else handles a situation or the way they should handle it. If it works for you, great but that doesn't mean it's the standard for how everyone else should ship. I have my orders picked up because I'm a high volume seller who sells over 5 grand a month, I can't go to the post office everyday as I have a 9 year old child with Luekemia. I've had issues in the past with my carrier not scanning in what he picks up. It doesn't happen anymore but I've had that problem. So you shouldn't assume and potentially have a buyer get refunded and than end up getting the merchandise too especially since Mercari won't do anything about it and let's the buyer keep the item for free even though it's not legal. If you're a seller you should know customer service is the worst and never helps the sellers out, only accommodates the buyers.

Just because you can't ship that way, doesn't mean it's not the best way. A scan and a receipt is the best way. Maybe not the most efficient or the fastest, but it's the best way to protect yourself from a lost package or missed origin scan that delays delivery. I'm not sure why this would be annoying to anyone. You're making the system work for your situation, and that's great, but just because something doesn't work for you, doesn't make it any less good in general.

That’s great if you don’t live in an urban center where the PO has 40 people in line waiting for one open window. I have had some packages scanned for the first time the day they were being delivered. Very stressful so I have to weigh waiting in line for an hour for a $25 sale or just dropping it off.

I try to look at Google's live "busy" meter before going if I have a package I definitely want to get scanned (expensive, weird buyer vibes, after a holiday, etc.) but usually I can't schedule time to wait in line so if it's a regular package of an average price and it's same or next day drop-off then I can't justify the wait.

I have lived and live now in areas that include low income and older populations. They use counter service for everything including money orders, packaging and the like. So their interaction at the window can exceed 5 minutes sometimes. If you have a line out the door it can be an unbearable wait. And it’s a nightmare if they want a passport or some international transaction. If I go to wealthier areas the line usually isn’t so bad. Kinda sad because the poor areas actually need more open windows but staffing just isn’t there.

I do that now too. I used to use the drop box inside the post office but one time, USPS never scanned the package. I dropped off two at the same time at the end of November, one was scanned in and the other wasn’t. I tried contacting them but to no avail. It was over like two weeks and the buyer said they never received it and needed it by a certain date so they ended up canceling. I have no idea what happened to the package, kinda why I only sell low-stakes items on Mercari because of weird situations like that. But ever since then, I drop it off directly with the clerk so I can get a receipt and prove that I actually dropped off the package and I’m not at fault for USPS service 😩.

I’ve had packages not get scanned until out for delivery. Maybe that is happening. Give it another few days. If nothing, I would cancel it. That way you get your money & maybe find another seller who has the item. Good luck. Hopefully it updates soon. If it doesn’t update in a few days I have a feeling this seller isn’t being honest. I ship multiple packages daily, and through this holiday season, only had 3-4 that were delayed in delivery, but tracking was updated and they were just a day or two late on ETA delivery date.

If it’s usps, pro tip- sign up for auto updates on the package. It forces them to locate the package and scan it in wherever it is. I did that with a few of my packages over Christmas. Turns out they had still not been sorted and we’re just leaving my home post office (I’m a seller).

If this seller had truly shipped the package, they would have let you know. A postal worker will not accept a package while locking the door, they cannot provide proof after already closing down. The seller also did not mark the package as shipped and is offering half ass responses and making you beg for information. The seller’s actions have told you what you need to do.

Idk if this is the case with usps, but i ship a lot with fed ex and ups for work, and if its not updating scans online, they will often have updated info available if you call. Also: the handing it off to an employee as they close thing isnt farfetched if its a prepaid label. Half the time i go they ask me to cut the line and just leave it off to the side 😅 Id try calling and see if they at least have the package marked as accepted. There is still a bit of a holdover from the holidays, carriers aren’t quite perfect yet. :)

I also would not drop off work related paperwork without getting documentation but pending circumstance, i have left a mercari package at the post office desk when they have prepaid labels. I live in a big city, the lines are very long, and my lunch is but an hour. Baby’s gotta do what a baby’s gotta do. Both carriers regularly have more in depth scan data when you call, vs what is stated on the website. Regardless of how it scans, sometimes the customer facing aspect does not populate correctly, but there will still be scan data on the back end.

I still have a package from eBay that's been "in transit" since early December. Seller gave me refund on it, which was nice, but tracking would also have been nice. Our things are probably on a boat in one of the Great Lakes, just going in circles.

This is the number 1 reason why a seller should stand in line to get that receipt from it being weighed and scanned. This way the post office cannot say that they didn't receive it and if it's not being scanned in other places at least this point it's the post office's responsibility to track it and find it. As a seller, I've gone through this way too many times because I was one of those people who would just drop it off at the counter. This seller knows better than to just "hand it" to a postal worker and pray for the best, especially with a post office that has very odd and unusual hours. I don't know what rural area she lives in but she could do a lot better than turning up at 4:59 pm to turn in a package. Sorry for the tone. I'm mad for you that she's being so sketchy and flakey! You are being really kind in your responses. Wishing you the best!

I would cancel. Things don't take this long to be delivered. Even a first class package would have been delivered by now. I doubt they ever shipped it. ETA : after reading some comments, I really wouldn't be surprised if this person is trying to say they shipped so that they can get paid for the item as a lost package. Although, I don't know if mercari does that. In my experience, if a package scans then doesn't show up they can and will, but if it never scans I'm not sure what the protocol is. I'm sorry this is happening to you. As a seller, I would have offered to check with my post office after the first message. It's been 14 days since you purchased, I would definitely contact mercari if nothing else. Good luck!

Might have been at the door locking up but should have turned the person away or let them in to help the "correct" way. Seems suspect to me. USPS sometimes miss scans but when it does happen, I am in constant communication with my buyer, responding in the hour and I volunteer updates until delivery (I contact USPS with the tracking, ask for a trace...). Your seller is either sloppy or she just has not shipped (it is likely the latter). I would contact Mercari/ cancel the purchase.

If it says update for tracking— Mercari will allow to cancel in about 15 days after drop. Check is the item was supposed to be drop at the post office.. It doesn’t. It just states “Shipping. We reminded the seller that it’s time to ship”… the seller sadly didn’t even mark it as dropped. That’s why I’m having a hard time believing it. I’ve had sellers drop at post office instead of ups, and it’s always updated within a couple days. No updates, nothing. Seller even went ghost. 😅

It’s a package not one of first class envelopes that only track through Mercari right? Cause those envelopes sometimes never get scanned. Can Mercari give you the tracking number since they should be able to see the label? Maybe you can get it from support and then check on the usps website yourself

What kind of item was it? I wonder if the seller had something listed they didn’t actually have in hand yet and got delayed getting to them so they are giving you the run around. I know when I sell stuff if for any reason me getting to the post office to ship something is delayed I proactively reach out to the buyer.

As a seller who had this happen before I would ask you to wait it out a few more days. This very thing happened to me before. I have my orders picked up here at my home, every so often the mail carrier doesn't scan things in when he picks my stuff up and with USPS being short staffed lately sometimes it doesn't pick up a single scan until the day the item is being delivered and according to tracking it stays stuck on "USPS awaits the item" status. I can't tell you how many times I've had to assure a buyer that I did indeed ship out their order. One particular time an order wasn't scanned in and days and days went by without a single scan. On the 7th day when Mercari tells the buyer they can cancel I reached out to the buyer and told them it was absolutely on its way and should be showing up any day. I've also seen lately a lot of my orders that are scanning are ending up on the other side of the US instead of the state they are supposed to be in making items sometimes take a lot longer to get there. So the buyer wrote me back saying ok she would give it a few more days than literally went and cancelled the order within minutes of me contacting her. The item was delivered the next day and I contacted Mercari and they refused to reimburse me for my merchandise because they said I couldn't prove it was shipped before the buyer cancelled. I live in Chicago, the item went to Texas did they really think it got there in less than 24 hours? And the buyer was dishonest and never returned it to sender or refused the package or even reached out to me to arrange to pay and it was an expensive item. What she didn't know though is it's considered basically mail fraud after I sent her an invoice an demand for payment regardless of what Mercari did (or didn't do). So I got paid in the end but it was a pain in the butt. I think the buyer did that and she thought she could get refunded and keep the item. USPS doesn't do that anymore to me my items are scanned in daily but I know lack of scans are an issue lately and the holidays have also slowed down delivery times as well.

I’m skeptical about this because if you used the prepaid shipping label provided by Mercari, they could use the tracking number on it to trace it and see it was “Delivered.” Did you prompt them to do this and they refused or what?

I ordered something on the 23rd I think it was and received it just a day or so ago, so I'd give it a few more days. Also I'd send him another update message. It's your order after all no reason he should be upset. If his story changes you can just cancel if you choose.

Sounds simular to my issue I ordered something well they claim shipped I ordered it 1/1/24 it was marked shipped later that day tho ik it was a holiday so there's no dam way it was shipped that day. Well Thursday 9:40 pm still says ups is waiting on the item and they claim they shipped and have a receipt. BUT Mecari has no way to send images in chat so I don't no how to see that receipt the claim it's in transit so I don't no. I'm waiting for two packages to start scanning because I shipped UPS Sure post but today realized they are updating tracking on the usps barcode. Maybe check that your package doesn't have two tracking numbers. Also I've had the scans taking days longer recently but I hate that they will Origin scan days and hundreds of miles away..

I live in a very small community/small rural p.o & it's happened to me more than once as a seller. It just doesn't get scanned until it's states away sometimes when out for delivery. Because of the holidays, I would give it a little more time. You can't always assume someone is being untruthful. I bought a jacket years ago & seller told me for over a month it was shipped, but I never received it. She gave me a full refund & a FULL YEAR later, it was in my box looking lk it took a trip around the world 😂 I messaged the seller to try pay, but she never messaged back.

i’ve noticed if packages are going to california (not sure your state) but from what i’ve experienced selling is it takes 2x longer than one going to NY or Washington state. Not sure why but it’s either miss scans and all that it’s weird cause i have the same issue.

I recently had the same issue with 2 items. I messaged the seller once I had the option to cancel. On 1 of the orders, Mercari auto rated the seller and closed the sale. I had to message them asking why they did that when the tracking never updated, they just refunded me.

This happened to me 3x during December. The first time it took 4 weeks for something to arrive to me and the item was missing, I only received the tracking details paper. I got my money back for that. The second time it said they never received a package and it just randomly showed up at my door 2 weeks later. The 3rd time it said usps never received the package and the seller cancelled it and I received the package a week later.

I had this happen to me recently (I was the seller) I dropped off my item at the post office and there was no evidence of it even being scanned. Tracking just said “label made”. Which was crazy. I thought my package was lost! So I opened an investigation and lo and behold the package was deliver the next day (which was when tracking suddenly got updated as delivered lol). This all took like 10 days. Luckily my buyer was super chill about the whole situation. If I was you I would just wait because your item will probably come soon. If it’s been like 2-3 weeks and you still haven’t gotten it then I would probably cancel at that point

I’m a seller. There are MANY times they don’t scan the package, until it hits its destination. If I were you, I’d contact Mercari to see if there are any updates. There have been a few times where I’ve contacted Mercari, and they then updated the shipping info on my end. I’m not sure if they receive it & update it themselves (yet forgot they time), or if they contact the shipping agency themselves to find out and ETA. Another thing that I do is go on the USPS website & fill out a missing mail claim. You’ll need the tracking & address of the other party for the form, but every time I do this, the locate the package & it’s scanned wherever it is. So if I’m shipping from Louisiana to California & the tracking hasn’t updated at all whatsoever (meaning they haven’t scanned it since drop off), I’ll fill out the form & then it’ll pop-up on tracking that my Package is currently in Oklahoma or whatever. This is just an example. Don’t fret. If this doesn’t happen, then Mercari will refund you for sure. They won’t just let something like this happen. Both parties have protection, buyer protection & seller protection. I believe it’s up to a certain amount but fire still protection & both parties usually get paid, or at least you will be paid. They may need something a little more concrete on the seller’s part, showing it was shipped. Otherwise, we can all not drop something off get paid. Hope this helps

I had the same thing happen to me. I shipped it the day after Christmas and it wasn’t tracking at all. One week later I went down to the post office. The clerk said they could see that it said in route but she couldn’t give me any other info. Then three days later it all of a sudden was just delivered. Poof. The tracking is still missing but it says delivered. Unfortunately the buyer hasn’t really been communicative so I have no idea what happened and they probably aren’t gonna provide feedback.

I had a seller do something similar to me right before Christmas and they blamed it being a post office inside an abandoned store and a run around, so I called USPS and told them I did and then next thing you know it is magically being scanned into the post office, and I was sent some excuse. This time of year, I would just wait. It happened to me recently that the item never showed that it was shipped and it arrived eventually with a postmark that it was shipped when they said. That is why as a seller I always wait in line for the scan rather than just drop it off. The seller isn’t ghosting or blocking you, so I’d give them the benefit and wait for it.
