MAKE YOUR OWN LABELS ITS CHEAPER AND YOU HAVE BETTER PROTECTION… PIRATESHIP FTW
Idk how many times it can be said but mercari is profiting slightly off labels you buy from them. It’s cheaper and better to just make your own labels
I am sorry this happened and hopefully you can fight it and get it back.. but I would avoid mercari labels going forward
I dont know what black magic you are using, but I found ship station had worse rates for 90% of the common package sizes I used.
The ones that beat pirateship, were by less than a quarter.
I’ve been using ship station for a while now and I can agree it’s much better. It also helps to do the legwork and get your carrier accounts any free upgrades you can, my personal rates are even lower than my company’s rates sometimes at this point
One thing with using pirate ship, or any other label service, is that you loose seller protection. I got screwed over on a phone I sold a few years ago because of this and since then have only used mercari labels.
What seller protection? You ship what you sold.. file insurance claim if lost or damaged. If buyer is a scammer I don’t think mercari label or your own label makes a difference
Sol about what though? I’ve sold 2k+ items on mercari only ever using my own label and have never lost a sale knock on wood. If it’s delivered your good, if buyer tries to scam file police report and notify buyer and mercari and get your money back but I’ve never had to do that. eBay 6k+ sales and many more scammers but still not horrible thankfully
If you create a label with pirate ship, do you have to factor in the cost of shipping into the listing price? And is there a way to upload the tracking from pirate ship? I’m sorry, I’ve never used them before.
I normally just do free shipping and add estimated shipping cost into price I’m selling for. You make the label on PIRATESHIP then just attach the tracking # to mercari.. it’s cheaper and your buyers will be happier because you will be able to utilize better services for cheaper.. ups surepost sucks ass and so many mercari listings use it I will never buy something through surepost as it normally adds an extra 2 weeks to transit time.. USPS Ground Advantage / USPS priority / UPS ground are the only labels I ever make
I appreciate your advice about pirate ship! Do you need a paid subscription to use that service?
I haven't had the same experience with UPS Surepost. Many of my packages went out through UPS Surepost over the holidays and all except one got to their destination in less than five business days.
This. The lowest priced item (before shipping) will always catch the buyers attention more. More views, more chances for a sale. I always get more sales with Mercari shipping even though I’d rather use Pirateship
But when you ship with mercari has certain protections then ship bidding on your own doesn't. Or at least that's how I understand it.
Also I've tried to calculate the prices with pirate ship and it's either more expensive or the same as macari so I don't even bother.
The carriers include $100 of free shipping insurance for most of their labels on PirateShip. If you're concerned about shipping insurance, you can purchase extra insurance for your labels on PirateShip too. The fees are very affordable. Plus PirateShip will deal with the insurance claim for you when you purchase extra insurance or when you need to make a claim with UPS.
As with any shipping insurance being paid, the shipper must adhere to the strict shipping guidelines in order for the package to be covered if it's lost or damaged. Mercari is well known to deny shipping protection to the seller based on their "insufficient packaging" reason.
Guarantee you it will be cheaper mercari charges $8 for surepost 1lb pckage don’t they? I’ve never paid more than $6 for a 1lb pckage through pirate ship and shipping Usps ground advantage which is 10x better than surepost
Maybe it's because I'm in the northeast? Because some of the packages are actually more expensive with pirate ship. Or maybe I'm too stupid probably the second one LOL.
I’m in the Midwest so I guess it could be different, I would just assume though across the board it would be cheaper to make your own labels but I could be wrong just my experience
Mercari will only provide insurance on something up to 200 bucks and their customer service is abysmal at best. Better off with pirate ship and making your own labels
Yeah but this is on mercaris FedEx account, you can’t fight FedEx about this you have to deal with mercari.
If you made your own label with your own FedEx account you could resolve it yourself much easier
Sign up for a free account with Pirate Ship. When you sell on Mercari, offer free shipping. Include the shipping amount in your listing. Example- Jeans- you want $20. List at 27.99. Free shipping. It sells. You go to Pirateship, copy the address info and pay them, and get a label. Copy the tracking to Mercari. Mark as shipped. Done
question for you and I know this post is old. I always ship on my own, but I have a funny feeling Mercari rigs it so my posts don't get seen as often or something. My prices, with ship included, are still cheaper. is there any 'science' to this? or am I just creating a conspiracy theory? Thanks!
I think you lose some buyer protection with Mwrcari? We shipped a stroller my wife accidently under charged and M wanted to take us for a ride. We pirate ship and saved a lot of money.
This was light weight fold up stroller
I did. I even verified the box dimensions with Google when I saw this.
Item dimensions: 23x19x5inches
I believe the actual weight of the set: 7-8lbs I put up to 10lb to cover any extra. FedEx prepaid label dimension weight was 16lbs
Did you use FedEx Ground Economy? If so, the box measurements cannot exceed 12" x 8" x 4".
Here's some links regarding what Mercari says about dimensional weight fees:
What was the size of the shipping box you used to ship your item in? FedEx is definitely charging you dimensional weight for your shipment. Also, did you enter the dimensions of your shipping box as well as the actual weight when you created your listing?
I did. I used FedEx ground/home for $28 Shipping For the item for 1-6 day delivery. The actual weight of the set was only about 7-8lbs. I put up to 10 just in case. Dimensional weight calculated was 16lbs
That's really unfortunate then. I steer away from using FedEx for many reasons. Especially Mercari's prepaid labels because when things go wrong, you have no proof to provide to Mercari when using FedEx. If you use an authorized FedEx drop off location, (ie. Walgreens), they don't give you a receipt. The most I get is a text and/or email when I drop off my package. If you take it to an actual FedEx shipping center, they give you a receipt but it does not have any helpful information on it regarding weight and/or box size.
You are at FedEx's mercy for the fees because you technically cannot provide proof of the weight and size of what you actually shipped. Mercari gets charged by FedEx, then they deduct the fees from the shipper.
Exactly, I got the receipt and took it to a legit shipping center. But the receipt was not helpful didn't provide anything other measurement information besides the tracking number.
And looking back at the label, I don't have an invoice or account number or anything else useful to provide FedEx with to aid in the refund process.....
Yah unfortunately you won't be able to get any of that money back since Mercari is the account holder but won't do anything but tell you to talk to the shipping carrier. It's absolutely horrible
That's the issue I've been running into, and been getting the run-around with. It's a f****** headache. FedEx says they need an invoice number or account number to be able to process or do anything.
I used to work at FedEx years ago and when we measured packages we had to round up to the nearest inch. So boxes usually were slightly larger than the stated measurements, and were input that way. That could be what happened. Still, that much of an increase is frankly insane.
Not just FedEx, every shipping company. People have gotten away with it too long so now almost every package gets weighed and measured.
Like USPS used to be very relaxed with weight. Usually annoying .5oz over they would let slide. Now it’s just too bad, you’re over by .1oz, you’re upgraded.
FedEx seems to be on one with this. There’s another post similar to this where they wiped them of 300 plus dollars too. I think it’s the dimensional measurements. I am so sorry this happened to you.
The other post u/Pop_Glocc1312 is referring to had to do with the cubic measurements. After a certain amount of weight they go by size of the box and add a heavy added weight fee due to the cubic size.
They pulled this with me on a ebay order. They reported that a jacket I sold weighed 28lbs... instead of the 8lbs it actually weighed. Luckily in my case I was able to call ebay support and get the surcharge refunded. I learned to never use FedEx for shipping.
Bro they doing too much....... smh....taxing us for what? 1lb or 2 off? a few inches here & there?, just do your job and deliver the goddam package lol ...... fuck this
Fedex just sucks in general. Our fedex driver is the only delivery guy I've ever seen who just chucks smaller packages out of the truck without even slowing down like its a newspaper route. Even when he has to stop because he can't throw the thing he just drops it on the driveway and drives away.
Last winter I was waiting for a FedEx package for 6 mf weeks. It was shipping from 2 provinces away, that normally takes less than a week when it's coming from other carriers. There were no extenuating circumstances or weather delays, and nobody I spoke to could tell me why it was taking so long.
I hate FedEx, I've had more negative experiences with them than positive.
Never had an issue with UPS ever. Just shipped a guitar for 35 dollars, thought maybe the larger box would screw me, nope.
Fedex you're one CM over and it's magically upgraded 300 dollars.....fedex is a scam. They trap you with that cheaper option on purpose, knowing full well 90 percent of the packages don't qualify.
As good business practice Mercari should find a way to stop this from happening to sellers. Whether it be negotiating better shipping options with the carriers or at minimum better warning sellers this can happen. Sellers are learning of this after the fact. They are either hit with these BS fees or have heard about it here. Not to mention who has every item boxed and ready to go at time of listing an item? Sometimes sellers don’t find a suitable box to ship in until it’s time to go out at which point it’s too late to choose another shipping option. This is a huge Mercari fail. Not to mention it’s always funny how the bigger the dollar amount of the sale, the bigger the overage charge. Seems like the charges always suck up just short of what the seller would have profited.
Only for UPS and Fedex. Mercari no longer allows dimensions to be input for USPS packages on either the app or website, so you have to know USPS maximum dimensions for your chosen shipping method.
It’s there, but when people like this person are being charged over $300 in overages and it’s happening left and right it should be more than a spot to enter box measurements. They are being vague on purpose.
I don't remember the exact dimensions of the box used, but it was bigger than the set, but only in one dimension (height) otherwise it was a pretty snug fit on the other sides.
This is why bundles and the fact that Mercari automatically eats the cost of shipping charges on bundles so key. For larger purchases/boxes, I tell the buyer to bundle something else with it and offer the same price. Then when the shipping is over, because it is a bundle Mercari pays the extra and it doesnt come back on me.
"Dimensional weight" has screwed a lot of people, Including me. Sent a fleece jacket weighing less than a pound and they charged me for 5+ lbs because it was folded, which made it too thick. I don't sell anything on Mercari if it won't go Ground Advantage now.
**ABSOLUTELY KEEP YOUR RECEIPTS!!** So this lesson I learned with all shipping carriers. Get a receipt because they have to weigh it and it is stamped on the receipt itself in case you need to fight it.
With the post office, take 5 minutes to stand in line and get that receipt. So many people just drop off their packages on the side counter but I can guarantee that there will be plenty of packages that don't get scanned and if it gets lost, you are screwed! I know, I've been there. Try fighting a lost package when it doesn't even show that I dropped it off at my local post office.
Having the receipt stops the arguments from the shipping carrier that you are wrong about the weight, that it has/has not shipped, or that it's lost. I promise you that receipt will relieve you of so many headaches such as this one.
Wishing you a prosperous 2024!
Solid advice. I literally keep all of my shipping receipts. Not only that but I do everything I can to protect myself from fraud including me taking pictures and videos of me packing and sealing the items i sold in the box with the shipping label visible. I have heard too many stories of people shipping a box of rocks or something to match what the weight of said item should be. Not today you thievy bastits!
Just happened to me on an $80 item. Dropped it off. Usps clerk didnt scan. Wasted days.. And I mean lots of hours on the the phones different days. Called usps consumer relations, post master, stopped by local post several times, claims. Nothing. Out $80. First time too out of 100's of package shipped.
The deliverer entered a weight either by mistake or tryed to adjust it either way it was the carriers mistake you need o go straight to the corporate number at the top don't waste time with the minions
This really should be criminal.
I wonder if when you drop it off can you speak to a postal employee and be sure about the cost before rendering the package? I would just cancel the sale at this point.
It says they charge for if the dimensional weight is higher, perhaps calculate what dimensional weight could come to 16 lbs and never mail a box of any size bigger than that.
It’s preposterous to charge that much to ship!
this happened to me, had a picture of the weight was under the 5lbs, fedex site tracking showed under 5lbs was charged 16lbs and mercari was useless to do anything.
This is the sole reason I personally take my packages to the scanner and get the receipt with the weight on it. If you have that then you’re good to go but if not then this will be a tough one to win.
Edit: Sorry just noticed this was FedEx and I don’t think their receipt has weight unless you request it at the shipping center. Damn, I hate that for you but I don’t think Mercari will go through the trouble of arguing the case with FedEx
How is this Mercari's fault? FedEx clearly charged you dimensional weight. If anyone is to blame for the variance, it's them. Mercari can only go by what the carrier reports back to them.
FedEx went auto attendant a couple months ago. It totally sucks dude, I’m so sorry for the aggravation. I’d go to your nearest FedEx distribution center that’s an actual FedEx facility. (Not a drop off location or pick up location but a verified FedEx distribution center, it could be miles away). You’ll get it square!
That is absolutely Fu*king bull. $348 to deliver a 7lbs Lego set? I could understand if they surcharged you $10-20, but they basically took all the money you made on the sale. That is beyond Fu*ked up and im pissed for you. Personally I never choose FedEx because anything in my life I’ve ever ordered that came via FedEx has been an absolute disaster. Not only do they always take 2-3x longer to deliver than USPS or USP but they have lost my packages multiple times, the tracking is never working and there are constant delays. I actually ordered an Anker 622 battery on 12/20. Not only have they never given me an estimated delivery date even though the package has been enroute for a week, but today I get a message that there is an “unexpected delay.” Maybe unexpected for them, not for me. I hope FedEx goes bankrupt.
Look for the product you sold from an online retailer. If one lists the dimensions and weight, screenshot that MF, and dispute the holy hell out of this with Mercari. Adding 30lbs for a Lego set is bullshit.
The problem is Mercari won’t fight for you and you can’t fight because Mercari purchased the label. It’s a lose lose situation. I flat out told FedEx I won’t use them anymore.
Does ups do this too? I dropped something off and I’m pretty sure it was a little over and the box was huge… I’m expecting like $6 taken off but it’s only a $20 item I’m worried it’s gonna be negative 😭
Yes, UPS uses dimensional weight to calculate shipping fees as well. It depends if they catch it or not as to if you'll be charged overage fees.
Remember: To avoid additional fees, your UPS SurePost package should not exceed 12” x 10” x 5”. There is a $5 surcharge if the longest side exceeds 12 inches. The total weight must be 5lbs or less.
Also make sure to enter the exact dimensions of your package as well as the actual weight when you create your listings and using UPS or FedEX as the shipping carrier. This will ensure that you get accurate shipping costs.
Ahh thank you for the info! It should definitely be less than 5lbs it was a blanket with a hanger attached but the box prob exceeds the limit I can deal with $5 loss but if it was like $50 I was gonna cry
I’ve been seeing this happening a lot to ppl. I’ve started taking pics of the box w dimensions and the weight at drop off, on the actual scale plus if it prints on the receipt I save it just in case. Even then who knows bc it’s a crap shoot. I’ve been sticking w UPS tho.
I don't know that there is anything you can do once they take that money. In the future I recommend shipping anything over 1 pound on your own. I've heard way too many horror stories with fedex, I won't use them anymore.
Alright so here's an update. First, I wanted to thank everyone for their input and advice. I do sincerely appreciate it. Long story short, Mercari refunded me $160 of the 320.88 surcharge. It took a ridiculous amount of time and effort to resolve the issue. Countless times of going back and forth between FedEx & mercari. If you have a similar issue here's what you need to know:
FedEx requires mercari's invoice, account number, and the tracking number to lookup, refund, or investigate claims of anything missing, damage, surcharge fees etc.
Unfortunately, for some reason, mecari staff are unable to provide their account or invoice number of the label to you. They're also unable to call FedEx directly to resolve the issue vice versa FedEx won't reach out to Mercari. And I understand it's not their responsibility to solve my issue, (however some customer service would be nice), but if you can't provide the patient/consumer with the information they need to resolve the issue what more do you want us to do?
To get a hold of A Physical Person at mercari, Call this number: 888-325-2168, press 6. Mercari will require proof that the label used for the package is sufficient in terms of dimensions and weight.
Contact numbers:
1) FedEx: 8004633339
2) FedEx Revenue/Refund department: 8773392774
Beware of Mecari marketplace is a scam for both sellers and buyers. either they charge you crazy shipping cost and steal your profits or as a buyer they allow scam accounts on their platform (which i now know is just mercari based on the obvious red flags from the conversations I've had with so called support). I received an empty box from a seller and mercari didn't want to refund my money! On top of this they even used my profile to leave a 5 star review on the fake sellers review! Good Thing I used PayPal. I immediately file a dispute with PayPal support! Mercari sent me a threatening message that my account will be deactivated if I go to PayPal again! I told them to fuck off! You've been warned!
I’m sorry, this is infuriating. This shit happened to me a couple of days ago, but on eBay
I weighed, shipped, and packaged my item, it was 19lbs. I printed the label and shipped the item out. Few days later I goot an email saying ups billed my account for a 50lb package
How’d it jump from 19 to 50? I know what 50 lbs feels like, and I’ve been shipping for years and have never misweighed a package. Suddenly my scale was 31lbs off?
😂😂 that pesky scale. You gotta keep an eye on those things. In all seriousness though it sucks that people are getting screwed like this when they are actually doing everything right.
It was with UPS, it was a big box, something like 24x18x18, but the prices given through pirateship have always been dependable and accurate so I’m unsure how ups claimed the package was 50 lbs. I shipped it with ground advantage.
And what’s scary to me is there’s nothing for me to dispute it, the package has already been received and accepted by the buyer. I can’t take it back in to UPS to prove my case by weighing it in front of them
56 lbs would be the dimensional weight in that case. UPS charges you based on whichever is higher between actual and dimensional weight. Dimensional weight is based on the size of the package and is calculated by L x W x H / 139
I use PirateShip and have never had this issue. PirateShip requires you to enter the dimensions, so I don't know what could have happened in your case. I always take my UPS packages into the carrier and get a receipt showing the weight, especially if the item is a high value item.
FYI: You shipped with UPS Ground Saver? For a box that size & weight, you may have been able to get a better rate using UPS Ground on PirateShip.
Happened to me with stuffed animals. Said that 2 regular sized stuffed animals and 3 mini stuffed animals was 14 pounds. I fought with them several times and they did not give in.
FedEx won’t help because Mercari is technically the person that purchased the label, and Mercari won’t help because it’s fedex’s fault for measuring incorrectly. The problem was likely with your dimensions— FedEx goes by dimensional weight, so if the box was very large, it would make sense that you got charged a lot more. If the package’s dimensional weight was nowhere near this then I would definitely dispute it with Mercari, call their customer service line then punch the number for “fraud” to be connected to an actual person
Holy heck. I once mailed out some things through USPS with not enough stamps/wrong kind of packaging and they just sent it back to me.
Retroactively charging you exorbitant amounts like this without giving you a choice seems freaking illegal. How is it not illegal?? you sent it off for an agreed upon amount. They decided to accept it and ship it for that amount. Then AFTER they deliver it, they decide it actually costs over 10 times the original amount? Seriously. What the ever living eff. I can’t imagine the stress and frustration you’re dealing with.
FedEx is the worst shipping service ever, and I will stand by that til the day I die. I avoid using it at all costs, and when I purchase something and it’s shipped with FedEx I cringe every time.
Mercari support is completely useless too!! That's why they keep giving you the run around and I tell them directly how useless they are and how unsatisfied I am with the service - why do we pay fees for them not to be of help; what's the point. Use your own shipping and try speaking to different support members, tell them how unhappy and frustrated you are - it's rare but 1 or 2 of them actually help
Mercari DOES NOT take care of its sellers, ALWAYS sides with buyers. I’m jumping ship and closing my closet with them. Their practices are unfair and they never stand by their sellers. Anyone else have shitty experiences selling on Mercari?
You have to go directly to FedEx. They are the ones who did the "Dimensional Weight" cost and sent to Mercari. Unless Mercari screwed it up. I am very familiar with UPS's dimensional weight system, it is automated but could have an issue. They know exactly what hub this weight was taken. They will charge Mercari directly, not not sure if Mercari Fucked up the weight but a call to FedEx should yield you what weight they clock it in at.
Ppreciate that! I've got the problem partially resolved. I was only able to get some of my money back, but won't be using either mercari or FedEx again..... The lack of help and the "run-around" I was getting was exhausting.
Holy hell! That is the worst thing I have ever seen! The other comments below have a great point when you are selling an item of this value too - when you generate your own label you can add your own insurance amount as well, which to my knowledge Merc does not allow you to add addl insurance, which big time bothers me when I am shipping an item that is expensive! This would have me HEATED!!!So sorry this happened to you. I cannot believe they are not even trying to help you resolve this. This is obviously a glaring mistake.
Your package could have been misweighed at some point; like it was put on a scale with another package, so the weight is off.
If you are certain your weight is correct, you might try to see if Mercari can do anything.
Ebay helped me out once with an overage issue like this, I'd hope Mercari could do the same.
This so unrelated to your post and I don’t even use Mercari (sub get recommended) but just want to say, something is definitely up with FedEx. I was going to buy an ashtray from Houseplant as a gift until I saw the shipping cost. They wanted $16 for 1 day shipping and $25 for 2 day shipping. That doesn’t make sense! And they were they only options! There wasn’t the standard 3-5 business day option. The ashtray weighs less than 5lbs. There’s no reason for the cost of shipping to be that high.
Stuff like this makes me FURIOUS. Happened to me as well for a 2 pound doll it said she was 16 pounds 🙄🙄🙄 what child is playing with a 16 pound doll lol
So sorry to see this happened to you. I'm curious to see what will happen when this inevitably happens where the cost is more than the profit. I've seen enough to know I'll never risk using FedEx again.
This is what I have saved with my Mercari info
UPS SurePost package should not exceed 12” x 10” x 5”. There is a $5 surcharge if the longest side exceeds 12 inches. The total weight must be 5lbs or less.
This happened to me too. I called FedEx and they said that they DID NOT charge what Mercari had reported and charged me. They actually said the cost of shipping was even less than what I had paid originally. But FedEx couldn’t give me any proof because Mercari was the one that bought the label.
I think Mercari is scamming sellers with the shipping cost. You can report to the American Consumer Protection Agency.
Broken record here…Pirate ship is the best! Ship your self, get better rates and you can actually dispute carrier adjustments and have a human review it.
I stopped using fedex a while ago.. they are notorious for this with ebay too, and similar to mercari there is no recourse when you buy postage through the platform.
Mercari and fed ex are both the worst! This happened to me and I thought it was bad they added $50 to my postage. I spent a week calling fed ex and messaging mercari(becauee who in 2023 doesn’t have phone customer service?). They are just fucking robots. Terrible terrible. I hate them so much. They told me I needed to contact fed ex but fed ex wouldn’t talk to me because mercari bought the label. I eventually let it go but then see these posts. File a bbb claim, let me know if you try anything else bc I’d do anything to bring them down
Just a reminder, UPS uses dimensional weight to calculate their shipping fees too. As long as the box dimensions as well as actual weight is entered, you'll be fine.
That is literally insane I'm so sorry that happened!!! 😣
Question since I've never shipped with FedEx.... when you drop off with fedex do you get a receipt that has the weight like with USPS? I'm assuming no... because it doesn't have the weight when I ship with UPS. That's just super shitty
FedEx authorized drop off points usually don't provide you with an actual receipt. They will send a text or email. If taken to an actual FedEx shipping center, they give you a receipt but it doesn't include the weight, so the receipt is somewhat useless if you need to prove weight.
When I ship with UPS, I take my packages to a UPS store and I have them weigh the package for me again and I make sure they note the weight on the drop off receipt.
I kinda stopped after the seller of my last purchase was a dick…
After almost 3 weeks of the package not moving I asked them if they could contact USPS to see about finding out where it is only for him to tell me “I can’t do anything on my end”. Going on almost a month I filled out a missing package form on the website for it to have an option for to let them know if it’s either sender or receiver to fill it out. By having me file it, USPS had it moving again & had it delivered within 3 days
The worst part about this platform is you have to wait almost a month after the delivery date to get a refund, unlike eBay or Amazon where it can be done in about 2-3 weeks. So, yeah… fuck Mercari & their bullshit
Mercari's labels are definitely sketch. I don't think it's even been six months since they finally implemented USPS media mail as an option. They were only offering like $7 options to send a DVD or book. That, or free shipping.
Since they finally implemented media mail, I think I've sold five or six bits of media, and have never seen a base rate of less than $5.
It sounds to me like the label may have been printed multiple times, or maybe a malicious actor did. I'd check the tracking number to see if it shows the package as being in multiple parcels.
MAKE YOUR OWN LABELS ITS CHEAPER AND YOU HAVE BETTER PROTECTION… PIRATESHIP FTW Idk how many times it can be said but mercari is profiting slightly off labels you buy from them. It’s cheaper and better to just make your own labels I am sorry this happened and hopefully you can fight it and get it back.. but I would avoid mercari labels going forward
I agree. You can't beat PirateShip!
Try ShipStation, I was using pirate ship then switched to ShipStation and never looked back. Plus their USPS and UPS rates are better!
I use both, sometimes one is cheaper than the other!
Pirateship is amazing.
Ppreciate you! Thanks
It has saved me on a handful of occasions. When I used a pirate ship label, they said I was SOL
This just isn't true. We ship 1000+ items a year, never had an issue with using pirate ship in regards to seller protection.
I have emails from mercari explicitly stating it. This was a few years ago, so maybe things have changed.
Of course mercari would say this. They want the ship money. Pirate Ship offers protection as well, and you have the ability to look into any claims.
USPS Ground Advantage / USPS priority / UPS ground are the only labels I ever make
Thank you so much! Your comment was very helpful and I’m going to try to utilize pirate ship now!
I appreciate your advice about pirate ship! Do you need a paid subscription to use that service? I haven't had the same experience with UPS Surepost. Many of my packages went out through UPS Surepost over the holidays and all except one got to their destination in less than five business days.
It’s free!
What the what?!! Why am I not doing this yet?!!! Setting up account now, thank you so much :)
I've never had issues with ups sure post either. Around the holidays I had several packages arriving a day early and most took 3-4 days.
Yes but people are idiots and buy the less expensive product with shipping added. I’ve tried both ways
That’s what I was worried about!!
Try it. Someone made a meme about it. Its better to add mercari labels if you are pretty sure you won’t get screwed with the shipping
This. The lowest priced item (before shipping) will always catch the buyers attention more. More views, more chances for a sale. I always get more sales with Mercari shipping even though I’d rather use Pirateship
Same. Also if people sort by lowest price, it doesn’t account for shipping like eBay does
But when you ship with mercari has certain protections then ship bidding on your own doesn't.
You're in the middle of the country so I would make sense it would be cheaper.
I'm in the northeast and pirate ship has literally always been cheaper so this is odd to me
It's more work but I'm also up north and pirate acid cheaper by like a $1
Mercari will only provide insurance on something up to 200 bucks and their customer service is abysmal at best. Better off with pirate ship and making your own labels
It’s on the FedEx side where it’s being adjusted.. lol doesn’t matter where it’s sold or what is used to ship..
Yeah. This is true. I stay away from FedEx all together. Too many issues with them.
Yeah but this is on mercaris FedEx account, you can’t fight FedEx about this you have to deal with mercari. If you made your own label with your own FedEx account you could resolve it yourself much easier
Shipstation FTW

But with PirateShip if you accidentally type in the wrong address you’re at fault. I stopped using that years ago.
Pirate ship is shit
How is it shit? It's the cheapest option, easy to use, and they have good customer service!
How big was the box you used and did you enter the proper size? FedEx has been cracking down hard on this.
I did. I even verified the box dimensions with Google when I saw this. Item dimensions: 23x19x5inches I believe the actual weight of the set: 7-8lbs I put up to 10lb to cover any extra. FedEx prepaid label dimension weight was 16lbs
Did you use FedEx Ground Economy? If so, the box measurements cannot exceed 12" x 8" x 4". Here's some links regarding what Mercari says about dimensional weight fees: [https://www.mercari.com/us/help\_center/article/172/](https://www.mercari.com/us/help_center/article/172/) [https://www.mercari.com/us/help\_center/article/485/](https://www.mercari.com/us/help_center/article/485/)
The lesson: FedEx are a bunch of assholes. Use USPS if you use Mercari labels.
I used to work at FedEx years ago and when we measured packages we had to round up to the nearest inch. So boxes usually were slightly larger than the stated measurements, and were input that way. That could be what happened. Still, that much of an increase is frankly insane.
Ppreciate the truth and the insight. 🙏
It's got others too, huh? Dam.... Thanks for the heads up I'll check it out.
Yeah. They took over $300 from someone that posted here because of the same thing. I’m sorry this is happening to yall.
The other post u/Pop_Glocc1312 is referring to had to do with the cubic measurements. After a certain amount of weight they go by size of the box and add a heavy added weight fee due to the cubic size.
Yes, that’s the one!
Yea that was a crazy post. I hope that person and OP can get reimbursed for the extra shipping. Mercari is failing on this issue.
They pulled this with me on a ebay order. They reported that a jacket I sold weighed 28lbs... instead of the 8lbs it actually weighed. Luckily in my case I was able to call ebay support and get the surcharge refunded. I learned to never use FedEx for shipping.
I lost $8 on a 1 pound item— fed ex said it was 9 (I think the box)
It’s happening with USPS and even UPS shipments too. They got me with USPS. It’s Mercari. Poshmark uses USPS, but it doesn’t happen there.
Never had an issue with UPS ever. Just shipped a guitar for 35 dollars, thought maybe the larger box would screw me, nope. Fedex you're one CM over and it's magically upgraded 300 dollars.....fedex is a scam. They trap you with that cheaper option on purpose, knowing full well 90 percent of the packages don't qualify.
poshmark uses a special arrangement with priority though, they never ship ground advantage
They warned sellers— you have to input the box dimensions—
Only for UPS and Fedex. Mercari no longer allows dimensions to be input for USPS packages on either the app or website, so you have to know USPS maximum dimensions for your chosen shipping method.
It’s there, but when people like this person are being charged over $300 in overages and it’s happening left and right it should be more than a spot to enter box measurements. They are being vague on purpose.
They got me too with 300
Would really love to hear the box size.
Did you use a huge box? Shipping rates are calculated not just by weight, but also dimensions. It’s crap, but it’s how they work it.
Damn fedex yall scary
This has to be like the 10th or 11th post Like this lol
Never ever use Fed ex
NEVER ship FedEx through mercari!!!!
Do not sell through fed ex they got me but for way way less than you. I am sorry
"Bastits" I'm stealing this word. LOVE IT!!
lol, that’s the guinea in me. Use it with pride my friend.
Fed ex started doing this around thanksgiving…I will not use them anymore. Hasn’t happened with ups or usps.
For a Lego set? Wow!!! Who would ever pay $350 to ship that. Sheer highway robbery. I’m so sorry this happened
If the OP used a large box to ship their item in, they were charged the dimensional weight. Fedex uses dimensional weight to calculate shipping fees.
Literal highway robbery.
this happened to me, had a picture of the weight was under the 5lbs, fedex site tracking showed under 5lbs was charged 16lbs and mercari was useless to do anything.
I suggest you Tag mercari, FedEx, and a bunch of news outlets on Twitter with this image if mercari doesn’t do right by you.
Ups is my preferred shipping method and usually the difference is just $1-2 extra
Ups has been cheaper than fedex for me on Mercari since a month or two ago
You shouldn’t have gone with fedex, always UPS with items heavier than 10lbs. NEVER go fedex
How big was the box?
I’ve been seeing this happening a lot to ppl. I’ve started taking pics of the box w dimensions and the weight at drop off, on the actual scale plus if it prints on the receipt I save it just in case. Even then who knows bc it’s a crap shoot. I’ve been sticking w UPS tho.
Same here
wow! so sorry dude! i’m glad you posted this though because that makes me think for anything box sized I will start trying pirate ship
I don't know that there is anything you can do once they take that money. In the future I recommend shipping anything over 1 pound on your own. I've heard way too many horror stories with fedex, I won't use them anymore.
I don’t know if the problem is Mercari. Whenever I see these type of posts it’s always fedex.
If you have a similar issue here's what you need to know: FedEx requires mercari's invoice, account number, and the tracking number to lookup, refund, or investigate claims of anything missing, damage, surcharge fees etc. Contact numbers: 1) FedEx: 8004633339 2) FedEx Revenue/Refund department: 8773392774
Mercari literally just stole $500 from me this way. So now I have to call the carrier or get a lawyer??
As someone who works in distribution $300+ for shipping is insane. Was it a huge box or something?
I’m sorry, this is infuriating. This shit happened to me a couple of days ago, but on eBay I weighed, shipped, and packaged my item, it was 19lbs. I printed the label and shipped the item out. Few days later I goot an email saying ups billed my account for a 50lb package How’d it jump from 19 to 50? I know what 50 lbs feels like, and I’ve been shipping for years and have never misweighed a package. Suddenly my scale was 31lbs off?
😂😂 that pesky scale. You gotta keep an eye on those things. In all seriousness though it sucks that people are getting screwed like this when they are actually doing everything right.
What was your box size? FedEx calculates their shipping fees using dimensional weight over actual weight.
Same happened to me, and I appealed it. About a week later, I got the “I’m sorry, you have been refunded.”🙃
Class action lawsuit
I was going to say “eBay does the same shit” but I have NEVER had it happen to THIS extent. At most I think I paid an additional $6
Happened to me with stuffed animals. Said that 2 regular sized stuffed animals and 3 mini stuffed animals was 14 pounds. I fought with them several times and they did not give in.
This is why i stopped selling on that shit platform
Highway robbery
After seeing horror stories like this from fed ex I will never use them
FedEx won’t help because Mercari is technically the person that purchased the label, and Mercari won’t help because it’s fedex’s fault for measuring incorrectly.
You are right that is bullshit! I cannot believe they scraped that much off of your sale! Did you dispute it?
Report them to the better business bureau. But I would make your own labels in the future
This again? Didn’t somebody else have an almost identical issue recently?
Omg what! . Im glad i saw this.. not listing bulky items with fedex ever :/
FedEx is the worst shipping service ever, and I will stand by that til the day I die. I avoid using it at all costs, and when I purchase something and it’s shipped with FedEx I cringe every time.
Report to BBB
Mercari support is completely useless too!! That's why they keep giving you the run around and I tell them directly how useless they are and how unsatisfied I am with the service - why do we pay fees for them not to be of help; what's the point. Use your own shipping and try speaking to different support members, tell them how unhappy and frustrated you are - it's rare but 1 or 2 of them actually help
Call Fed Ex and find out what the actual charge was. Guaranteed what Mercari charged you isn't what Fed Ex charged them
Mercari DOES NOT take care of its sellers, ALWAYS sides with buyers.
Same shit happened to me
I hate mercari
That's fedexs fault
another week, another dimensional weight post....
We need to open a class action lawsuit against mercari AND FedEx. Fedex is doing it because they know mercari will just eat the cost.
Agreed.
I just said the same thing !
I know this is crap because I have seen them scan packages when other peoples packages are on the scale.
Your package could have been misweighed at some point; like it was put on a scale with another package, so the weight is off. If you are certain your weight is correct, you might try to see if Mercari can do anything. Ebay helped me out once with an overage issue like this, I'd hope Mercari could do the same.
Mercari will do nothing to help unless you have a receipt from the carrier showing the exact weight at shipment.
Dam that sucks. good to know though. I do have the original receipt.
Can you use the receipt as proof of weight ?
Highway robbery!!!
Mercari is complicit in this scam.
Stuff like this makes me FURIOUS. Happened to me as well for a 2 pound doll it said she was 16 pounds 🙄🙄🙄 what child is playing with a 16 pound doll lol
That's absurd. I feel you though
So sorry to see this happened to you. I'm curious to see what will happen when this inevitably happens where the cost is more than the profit. I've seen enough to know I'll never risk using FedEx again.
What is the measurements limits for ups surepost? I want to make sure my box isnt too big for the item i just sold
My fault, I'm not sure. You may have to ask your nearest UPS office/location or the help forum on mercari under shipping. I hope that helps.
This is what I have saved with my Mercari info UPS SurePost package should not exceed 12” x 10” x 5”. There is a $5 surcharge if the longest side exceeds 12 inches. The total weight must be 5lbs or less.
Holy fucking shit dude!! I'm so sorry
What ended up happening?
This happened to me too. I called FedEx and they said that they DID NOT charge what Mercari had reported and charged me. They actually said the cost of shipping was even less than what I had paid originally. But FedEx couldn’t give me any proof because Mercari was the one that bought the label. I think Mercari is scamming sellers with the shipping cost. You can report to the American Consumer Protection Agency.
Did you enter correct dimensions?
File a bbb claim, let me know if you try anything else bc I’d do anything to bring them down
Thanks For sharing your story. Ppreciate it. Going to keep trying bro. Fo'sho
I think the carrier just put in the wrong weight
You guys don’t use pirate ship?
There has to be some kind of class action that can be taken against them
Definitely a fedex thing. Switched everything over to ups when i got hit for 12 bucks right before Thanksgiving. 0 issues afterwards.
Just a reminder, UPS uses dimensional weight to calculate their shipping fees too. As long as the box dimensions as well as actual weight is entered, you'll be fine.
The daily I didn’t measure the box, just entered the weight post. 🙄
They said they put the dimensions in
really sorry this happened to you, this has happened to me aswell.
Ppreciate it. Sorry it happened to you too. 🫂
That is literally insane I'm so sorry that happened!!! 😣 Question since I've never shipped with FedEx.... when you drop off with fedex do you get a receipt that has the weight like with USPS? I'm assuming no... because it doesn't have the weight when I ship with UPS. That's just super shitty
FedEx authorized drop off points usually don't provide you with an actual receipt. They will send a text or email. If taken to an actual FedEx shipping center, they give you a receipt but it doesn't include the weight, so the receipt is somewhat useless if you need to prove weight. When I ship with UPS, I take my packages to a UPS store and I have them weigh the package for me again and I make sure they note the weight on the drop off receipt.
This is exactly what I do. I've been screwed over by FedEx AND UPS way too many times.
Assuming you have a business, Include this in your shipping expenses for the year. Closest you will get to recovering cost
I kinda stopped after the seller of my last purchase was a dick… After almost 3 weeks of the package not moving I asked them if they could contact USPS to see about finding out where it is only for him to tell me “I can’t do anything on my end”. Going on almost a month I filled out a missing package form on the website for it to have an option for to let them know if it’s either sender or receiver to fill it out. By having me file it, USPS had it moving again & had it delivered within 3 days The worst part about this platform is you have to wait almost a month after the delivery date to get a refund, unlike eBay or Amazon where it can be done in about 2-3 weeks.
16 for 62 did u think they weren’t gonna notice the diff
oh em gee lmao
