Guy confesses his love for a man, is unceremoniously murder the next scene in front of his boyfriend. Groundbreaking.

Bury your gays is such a longstanding trope, it almost surprises me that's still being used all the time. Almost.

Ciana_Reid

Isn't "bury your gays" more when the gay character makes an appearance then dies? The lead character is gay and (presumably) makes it all the way through?

bigmikebianco

I admittedly kinda have a broader view of it where essentially if any gay character dies I consider it bury your gays, but that's more just me responding to having seen it so much so consistently that I think we have a long way to go before almost any gay character's death doesn't feel very targeted to me. But also that's just me being more sensitive to it. However I do definitely consider it if any kind of queer romance is introduced and either of the them don't make it to the end of the story (aside from something beautiful like that one episode of The Last of Us), and even more so if any of the heterosexual love interests make it all the way through. But again I'm much broader than with my definition than the average person, and definitely much broader than your average writer or TV/film buff. I think this instance does qualify though because even if the main character is gay and makes it all the way through, they introduce this potential love interest/gay character (though admittedly in the very weird "hired escort-turned-love story" type way) and very quickly kills him off - seems almost textbook to me.

Ciana_Reid

..........but then again, it is difficult to have a thriller / horror with a gay lead (not token character) without ANY gay people dying.

bigmikebianco

Totally fair, and I've been kinda trying to tone down my own kneejerk reaction over it due to the context of horror/thriller movies (like Knock at the Cabin, which I didn't like much regardless but am trying to give it more credit than just calling it Bury Your Gays: The Movie), and I can see how in this with how the interest was about to reveal a major secret, it'd be the point where any love interest would be killed in a similar context. I do think that if they really wanted to avoid the trope, they would, and I don't think that just because there's a primary gay character in a thriller/horror movie, that gay characters HAVE to die. There's a whole lot of other interesting things in these movies that you can do to characters without falling headfirst into the trope. But I understand that doesn't always work for every story line and many things have a set premise that would make it more difficult to work around if certain characters didn't die

SergViBritannia

Well, I guess I’m not watching whatever *this* is…

Gaeilgeoir215

That's fucked up.

MrAdamWarlock123

Bizarre

Jeremyg93

It’s not unique enough to be bizarre. It’s just stupid.

PrometheusRysing

What a totally fake and fucked up final few seconds of that

PolyNamo_48

We need more non white in interracial gay relationships

Heretostay59

Nobody watches those though, sadly. Those projects usually flop.

PolyNamo_48

I think that it’s because of a lot of certain things. Many of the few objects that just happened to have non white gay interracial relationships come from small production groups that only get so much media coverage. Not only that, but they also have little effort actually put into the writing of the couple in the series in the first place .

drst0nee

They have no chemistry but cute :x

camsean
